Just disappointing and I’m already dreading our high school season interaction here after the not so welcome letter from the FAC.

We’ve had a membership here a few years ago (for an 8 year stretch) and now only pay for a single student membership.

The pool chemistry is unpredictable. I have requested reports of the chlorine levels due to severe rash and itching to my sons who use the pool repeatedly during HS swim season last year.

The FAC makes roster enrolled HS swim team participates paid 10.00 a visit for the week of preseason. This is their policy, and their policy is Greedy.

I purpose when the Swim Team does their fundraising for the season they set money aside for preseason swims so no child feels left out from the team because there is a 10.00 fee each time. Apparently this is a place (the FAC) needs our money, and not other disadvantaged organizations. If you’re on the roster you should be able to join your team for team events. This is not the first time I disagreed with this policy, they pulled the same thing in 2023.

If I could give it negative stars, I would. The high school has priority over the entire facility. Member concerns are never taken seriously and often treated rude. Many times the pool should be open and the high school will have an impromptu swim practice with no regard for paying members, this happens in the gym as well. The hot tub and sauna constantly close and there is almost no time for family swim. The pool schedule is very limited and does not seem to be changing anytime soon. People constantly complain about how dirty the facility is but that’s also not changing anytime soon. I wish I could say they are doing the bare minimum, even that would too much credit.

I go specifically for the pool. I’m retired so the hours to lane swim are decent. What I struggle with is the emails they send to members telling them to clean up after themselves, don’t shave, the locker room and showers aren’t meant for anything other than a quick freshen up. Be kind and considerate. Good grief. i’ve had zero issues with other members. The problems are many on the staff side though. There has been two or three showers not working for months. The lights in the showers burn out and we are told they won’t fix ‘just one light bulb’. When there are several they will send in a maintenance person. The benches and lockers are filthy just from regular usage and I see the same dirt week after week. Same with the showers - they aren’t getting cleaned well on the weekends when I think that type of cleaning gets done. I don’t think management checks up on how well staff are cleaning. The manager who left was great. This wasn’t happening under his leadership.
The lifeguards are great. Most of the desk staff are pleasant. I guess to sum it up I would say stop yelling at your members. They aren’t the only problem and berating
them isn’t helpful. Try a different approach and clean up your own act.

This review is specific to private lessons.
TL:DR - call and see if you can be on the list Miss Bre sends out with her availability and get on her schedule!

Details:
My son took private lessons with Miss Bre while we were visiting for a month this summer. We went from an absolute fear of the water (due to swimming lessons at a previous place) to swimming to her with just a pool noodle for support after only 5 lessons. (We took a total of 7). He also would jump in the pool towards her from outside the pool, a total nonstarter when we first came. By the end of the seventh lesson he was pushing off the wall to her holding a pool noodle just out of reach.

Miss Bre has a no nonsense approach while being really fun and incorporating games and water safety into each lesson. We're excited to return when we visit next!

Lots of quality equipment with minimal grunting going on in the weight room these days. EXCEPT for you, guy who squats 8 plates for only one rep then drops it on the floor..

UPDATED September 2024:
One rep grunting guy appears infrequently now, really helps the tinnitus caused by his single rep heavy weight drops. Music is lots of 80s movie soundtrack faves these days, we're talking that song from the end of Dirty Dancing plus multiple songs from Flashdance for whatever reason. OMG now they're playing 'Danger Zone' from the original Top Gun...total time warp!

UPDATED November 2023:
We were doing better for awhile but now the latest is disco. We're talking Bee Gees (Stayin Alive), Copa Cabana (ok maybe it's not disco but it's from the same era). The worst is when 'Take My Breath Away' from the original Top Gun movie plays. I'm missing The Moment of Truth at this point!

UPDATED March 2023: Knocking the FAC down one star, still good at four overall but I've heard 'The Moment of Truth' constantly for months now on the PA system..some days more than once. For those fortunate enough to not know this one it's an obscure song from the (original) Karate Kid soundtrack..yep, the movie from the 80's. SLFAC, remove this song along with Justin Beiber and I'll gladly hand that 5th star back..!

My daughter had her 7th birthday party at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center this weekend and it was the best party she’s ever had. Planning it with Tori was easy and she answered all my questions. Tori and the staff were so nice and accommodating to us. The day of the party went smoothly. They let us have extra time to set up before and time to clean up after. The party room was very spacious and served its purpose. The water park area was clean, and the kids and parents loved it! Everyone enjoyed themselves. I would definitely do another party here. The prices were very reasonable as well.

Closing for the Coast Guard Festival? These non-essential closures and staff centric operating hours are over the top. Why is this facility no longer focused on its members?
Furthermore, if there is going to be such a closing, why is it tucked away in an update email and not sent as a special email calling attention to a unique Saturday closing?
You literally have to check every time before going to make sure it's open and the amenities you are intending to use are available. Hard to believe this facility would remain open if it wasn't part of a public school.

Absolutely terrible. The pool is shut down regularly, The sauna has been broken for over 6 months and has yet to be fixed, dryers for the pool area are tiny and can not fit a regular sized towel, and now today someone stole my stuff that was sitting next to the coat rack in the weight room. I asked the employees at the counter for help as I think my stuff was stolen and all they could offer was for me to write my name down in case someone decides to turn my stuff in. Why can we not look at security cameras in 2023? I know exactly where I left my things but yet I can’t receive any help. I am very frustrated because I pay monthly to be a member here (even though it is a publicly funded building) and there is nothing being done about theft inside the building.

It's a nice facility but it has crazy limited hours for the price. Supposedly due to staffing but they don't seem to be actively seeking staff. Maybe it's a money issue but it is going to be tough to gain many new members when it is hardly ever open.

They are also still not offering rentals, pool parties or day passes as well (due to Covid, in 2023) and you can only use day passes purchased pre covid under very strict conditions.

Just not a member friendly place at all with all the policies and restrictions.

The facility is great but the hours are bad for a gym. If you're a gym goer and you have a daily regimen this isn't the place. NO sundays, LIMITED saturdays, NOTHING past 8:30 PM. They close for every reason under the sun. This year they were closed for coast guard festival (what?) mothers day (WHAT?!) fathers day (WHAT?!) basically any major and and every 2nd and 3rd tier holiday are closed. Also, if ANY maintenance is going on they close. They're also closed for bad weather IN ADVANCE. I would be willing to bet they're closed close to 100 days a year (maybe more) that only leaves you less than 1/3 the time to go (if you count the time they're closed during regular business hours)

Sad to see the family pool closed on a Friday night, and the facilities closed on a Sunday. Possibly one of the biggest
family days of the week. Reason’s given to me have been lack/shortage of staff. That being said, I tried to find an opening at the Aquatic Center. It was difficult to find and apply for a position.
I truly hope they try to make better efforts in recruiting competent staff soon. Granted, I have 30 years oversight of recruitment and retention for : 3 healthcare organizations. So I can say I do not feel a sense urgency in their strategy’s. I hope to see the Aquatic Center regain the quality it had a few years ago.

Great gym to attend. The only current downside is staffing. Hours have been getting adjusted due to the need for staffing, but the membership payment is still the same.

The gyms are not open very often. The kids just want to go shoot around and gyms always occupied with basketball or wrestling practice. At night it is usually packed. Need a bigger facility or another gym. The staff is nice and also the classes are good but you have to pay extra for those.

Drove over to it and its not a public swimming place daily just some days.

Not sure how to reply so im doing it this way. I drove 2 hrs to grand haven on a day it was 80 in lansing. It was just under 70 there water cold. It started to rain. Kids were bummed so i had to last minute improvise. Ok google what are the indoor activities near me. You popped up. The advertisement i saw and read didnt say anything specific about hrs to do things. It advertises a place to go swimming. Sounded great trying to surprise kids so another 20 minute car to your location. (Kinda weird corner) just to be asked if my kids needed lessons. Well bad timing on our part i guess because again its not really public swimming just certain times. I felt the ad was misleading then the attitude i got from the staff member didnt help either. I had forgotten about this place until google asked me to review it. This was just my experience. Other people im sure have had fun there. Everyone will not. Its just a fact of life. Im putting it out there so other people dont have the same piss-poor experience i did that all.

Had our first swim lesson with Spring Lake Aquatic Center this week & it was overcrowded chaos! A dozen or so small kids, 1 instructor, 1 assist. Not much teaching going on, just attempted crowd control. I was genuinely concerned for the kids' safety in this situation. They knew there was an issue , even said so, but didn't offer a makeup lesson, extra pool time, nada. Very disappointed after all the recommendations this facility had for swim lessons. We have had swim other places and if this doesn't greatly improve will be making the drive to another facility. *Revised: improved 2nd week. Smaller groups, better lesson plan, positive feedback from instructor and more individualized attention.

nice atmosphere, quickly runs out of treadmills and other cardio equipment around 5 to 6 pm. i pay spring lake taxs, but for some reason they think i pay grand haven tax. so i dont get the 32 dollors a month membership. instead they have me pay 42 dollors a month.

Prices are the best my family and I have found with daycare provided. They have a smallish water park for the kids and a daycare center. They share with the high school but it seriously never has been an issue. We enjoy being a member here and are always greeted friendly upon arrival. There are enough things to do that it never seems packed or cramped.

Awesome cardio and weight equipment for teens and adults to use along with an indoor running or walking track. Alsothe pool is very fun for the kids and whole family. Lazy river, whirl pool, big slide, party area, hot tub, sauna, and a competition pool for swimming laps or using the diving board.
