Played at The Orchards on Sept 12th as part of an outing. The course is in great shape, but the management and course marshalls need a little more tact and understanding. After our 1st 2 holes, they stopped us and told us we were 7 minutes behind the group ahead of us and falling behind. We explained that their grass cutters were going back and forth across the fairway and did not even bother to look and see if there were golfers, so we had to wait. Then on the next hole, the grass cutter was there again and to make matters worse, there was a guy on the green, blowing off leaves. This was at 8:30 in the morning. The marshalls did not seem to care and continued to blames us. They pretty much followed us around the course and every other hole or so told us again we were behind. finally, on the 8th tee box they told us we were 22 minutes behind the group in front of us, which was hard to believe as we saw that group on the 9th teebox. She told us we were holding everyone up and when we looked back at #7, there was no one in sight. Then on the 9th tee box they told us we had to move up to the 150 mark and tee off to catch up, or just skip the hole. We skipped the hole. Funny thing is, we never saw a marshall on the back 9.
Also, we had a steak dinner after our outing and the cooks were told that we were supposed to be in at a certain time and regardless if all our group was finished, cook the steaks. I tell you honest, the steaks were somewhat warm, but were like eating a piece of rubber. I love steak, but did not bother to finish mine. We will never play The Orchards again.
I also heard from some of our outing that play the course off and on that it is the same thing every time....marshalls running around telling golfers to hurry up, even when there is no one behind them. I understand that concept, but to tell a group they are holding people up when no one else is on the course is just
bad management and it is hard to play golf when "Big Brother" is watching you every move

That was the last time this place will get my money it's a nice enough but then again for the money it should be the staff is extremely uncurtious and the place is extremely poorly run they kept putting out twosomes in between foursomes which led to slow play and after spending $90 for a round of golf I paid to play more after the 18th after I got done with the first nine it's 6:00 at night I'm on the 10th hole and the ranger comes and rips me off the golf course because why would you not pull somebody off the course who just spent $135 to play golf and at 6:00 at night someone comes to your establishment and spends $200 after food range balls and paying to play again why would you not kick that person off your golf course I can see by the other reviews that I'm not the only person has a problem with course management

we got there on time ( 2 people) to be told βfinally youβre hereβ then as we started there were people already teeing up as soon as we hit the ball. we were placed with another group but got many reminders that we were moving too slow, we then separated and started to keep pace but then we were followed through holes 3-7 and essentially we were told this course wasnβt good for us and we should go elsewhere, we stayed and played and even got free golf lessons which is nice but do not come here if you are learning or a beginner golfer they do not care and do not want you here.

They have one starter who should be fired. I do not know his name, but he is the only one with all white hair. He is rude, condescending and has NO customer service skills. I'd fire him if he worked for me. I do not understand why management keeps this guy around.

The Orchards is simply the best public course in southeast Michigan. Itβs an insanely fun track thatβs both playable and challenging. Odd to read complaints about the staff because I think this course has some of the best service of any course around. From the rangers to the bag boys, their operation is better than some country clubs in the area. I will be back considering itβs a similar cost, albeit not cheap, to other courses of much lesser quality.

I can tell why the orchards was voted best golf course in Macomb county. Beautiful course, lovely clubhouse. The pro shop has a great selection. The bar is good amount of options, they were out of glizzys when we hit the turn around 6:30pm, kind of disappointing but not a big deal. Now to the course, I found it pretty challenging but very doable. Very well kept up. Greens are fast. Big sand traps that are very well kept. All of the staff was friendly and helpful. If you in the area itβs a must play

Course is great, will never play again.
We went out with a 4 some and a mid morning tee time, in my opinion weβre a good group of polite golfers who try to have a good time and keep proper pace. We made the turn at the 2 hour and 5 min mark, again solid pace, and 2 holes later had a ranger come up and explain to us that we were impacting the pace for the course and we needed to speed up.
The carts all have signs that indicate a 4:24 play time as a target (we finished in about 4:15).
We even had a different ranger approach us later in the round to thank us for having a βperfect pace for the day.β
My suspicion is the 4 some of kids behind us wasnβt happy we werenβt scratch golf long ballers, or that the course wanted to push as many folks as possible through the turn before a potential storm to avoid rain check costs.
Ultimately this is the courses fault, if youβre want us to finish in a pace of 14 mins/hole and donβt want folks waiting ever, stop booking tee times every 10 mins.
In total between golf, drinks and food our foursome spent close to 700$ for our round in order to be accosted about keeping what we would consider a very good pace. Thereβs way too many good courses out there, for less money, I wonβt be back.

Always a great time at a great course. The Orchards, IMO, is top 3 golf courses in Southeast Michigan, right up there with Fieldstone and Shepherd's Hollow.
Updating for 2024:
Orchards never disappoints. The layout is just top notch, not a bad hole out there. Love the GPS on the carts and yes, I even love the geofencing, because it helps with the condition of the course around the greens (walk a little, it won't kill you!).
Any conditioning problems are player related. Man, since Covid, far too many new golfers who just don't take care of the course.
The GPS on the carts has a pace of play warning if you're behind, and will relay back to the clubhouse the position of everybody. 4:24 is the posted place of play time. If you can't play in that amount of time, play somewhere else!
Only suggestion would be to get a hybrid tee rating for blue/white.

Terrible experience, overpriced for the experience. My biggest issue was the pace keeper rushed us into a jam during tournament play and threated to make us skip a hole, mind you still in tournament play even though there were 2 other groups still on the hole ahead of us. The course was not super well maintained. There was an obliterated urinal on the front 9, and the course it's self was not very enjoyable to play. The only reason I can see someone voluntarily going and spending that money on this course is if they didn't know better.
I will personally be seeking a refund for the time wasted here.

Hope you've got 6 hours to spare... They jam the course full to maximize revenue. Even if you have 3 players, they will move someone up by 3 tee times to pair them with you. Practices like this are killing golf. The course is maintained well, but you begin to hate it when it's been 3 hours and you're on the 8th tee.

Absolutely beautiful course total ruined by greed. Sending groups out every few minutes, rangers constantly rushing you. Signed up for a twosome (we are both 9 handicap golfers) and they paired us up with 2 elderly gentleman who took 15 shots per hole - then harassed us for playing too slow. What a pity - a really beautiful - but horribly mismanaged course. Iβll never play there again.

We arrived sprightly and cheerful, ready to enjoy "our club for the day", only to be crestfallen by the repugnant manner in which my playing partners and I were treated. We played at an acceptable pace but had to wait on the group in front of us - who in turn happened to be waiting on the group in front of them. The cart began to inform us that we were out of position, posthaste. However, as anyone that has played the game can attest, you can only play as fast as the group in front of you. We talked with two rangers on the front nine, in between the cart's veiled threats of skipping a hole. Again, we waited at every tee box and every approach shot for the green to clear.
We made the turn after 9 and were shocked when the starter told us we had to skip the clubhouse (for water and to use the restroom). Surely, you jest! Skip the clubhouse? We obliged and proceeded to 10 tee, where we found ourselves again waiting at least 5 minutes. We played the rest of the round in disgust and anguish; with no one behind us, I may add. We waited for every shot and didn't see one ranger on the back nine. Around 16, we observed a five-some playing a few holes behind us. The back nine is the Wild West where no ranger is bold enough to go.
A vivacious course that I will never step foot on again.

I would STRONGLY urge you to call for a tee time instead of use the online service, they purposefully make it difficult to cancel / transfer to another person should anything happen in your life where you can't make it. I wouldn't even mess with it. They don't respond to email, and in the case where no one takes your call to cancel / transfer, leaving voicemail is not enough, and then you're just out $100. Life happens, you'd think a golf course would be more amenable, but that is not the case here. Why go through the potential drama when you can have a better experience somewhere else. Recommend Shepherd's Hollow in Clarkston if you're even slightly on the fence.
Edit - After seeing some of the other reviews about management on here, i should've known and selected a different course knowing I might sustain some minor injuries - preventing me from playing golf - in a sport the day before. That's on me.

I was geeked to play this course and I was really enjoyed myself for the first 9. We kept up with place of play and came into the turn to get some refreshments and to use the bathroom. We were flagged by the starter who told us we could not stop on the turn because of pace of play and we had to go straight to the 10th tee box. When we got to the 10th box we had to wait at least five minute before we could even tee off. Needless to say it put a black cloud on the rest of the course and just made the experience miserable. That was my first time playing that course and will certainly be my last.

Course is in great shape. Greens are very fast and, like many fairways, undulating. Pace of play was kind of slow for a weekend morning round, but not terrible, and the ranger helped speed things up making it a 4.5-hour round. First-time players should take note that it's a strategic course -- especially the back nine. No need to pull driver every hole. I think I used it three times on the back en route to shooting a 38.

There are a few good things about this course- itβs beautiful, and the carts have gps. The cart lady, Jessica, is fantastic and sweet. However, the rangers on staff are arrogant and unwelcoming.
Upon arrival, we informed staff it was our first time at this particular course so we werenβt familiar with it. After waiting a good amount of time, the group in front of us had just gotten far enough ahead of us to where we could tee off, when a female ranger started shouting that we needed to hurry up and tee off. She had no intentions of being respectful or polite. She just yelled at us to tee off. At the second hole, the same pompous ranger came up and told us people were complaining, weβre holding everyone up, and demanded we speed up. I asked if we could just let the group behind us pass us, because thatβs what we do at every other course, and she said no. She told us if we didnβt go faster she would have to tell us, not ask (she made that very clear) to skip a hole. We said that we paid for golf just like everyone else and we werenβt going to just skip a hole. She then pointed out the one member of the group who wasnβt even golfing, and told her she needed a collared shirt next time we came out, and it came off very snobby and condescending. I understand if that is the rule, but why wait until after we were out on the course to say something? It just seemed like she was looking for something to complain about at that point. She continued to come tell us to speed up, nearly every hole, which was undoubtedly only slowing us down when we were genuinely trying to go faster. At the 7th hole, a male ranger approached us and told us to βskip the next hole please and thank you.β We were so disappointed to be treated so poorly by the staff of what seems to be such a nice golf course. If the workers approached us politely, I wouldβve been writing a whole different review. Itβs a shame a beautiful course is tainted by such a smug and pretentious staff.

I've been playing here as long as I can remember. Would love to give this review 5 stars, but I have to deduct a star for the condition of the greens. I played on 8/28 and the greens were pretty beat up...tons of unrepaired divots and old divots that were not attended to properly. For the price you pay for this course, its green should be the highlight of the experience. With that being said...course is otherwise great, 5/5 practice facility, and staff is very friendly.

Every single ranger was very rude to the group I had gone with. We are not beginners and we were going a very decent pace. There had been several times where the same three rangers complained to us about how slow we were, when we had to wait about a half hour to even start the game because of the people in front of us. I can say, Jessica the cart girl was the nicest lady I had approached the entire experience. She was very kind and respectful unlike anyone else who works for this course. We had got told many times to skip the next holes, in which we only came to do 9 anyways! I am very disappointed, especially because we paid so much money and on top of that, they require collared shirts so when my friend came in with a blank white shirt they made him purchase the same shirt but with a collar on it but didnβt say anything to the older man that didnβt have a collar. I cannot stress enough how disrespectful they were to us. I will absolutely never be back to this course, despite how beautiful the course is, it was not worth the disrespect and being told βwe do not know how to play correctly.β

The course and club house were beautiful. We enjoyed our outing and would consider returning. The start put us a bit on edge. We were only on the first hole and the starter told us we needed to pick up the pace or we would need to skip a hole. Seeing it was only the first hole, this seemed a bit excessive! Had we been holding up other golfers, we would have understood, but not necessary at that point. As we progressed we had caught the couple ahead by the 3rd hole. We spent the remaining 5 holes being held up by the twosome, yet never saw another person talk to them about holding us up. Once we made the turn to the front nine, the starter mentioned how we really moved along. Perhaps she could learn a thing or two about assumptions.

Ive never met such rude, pompous staff in all my life. They had me (a single golfer) tee off behind a foursome of beginners that would not let me play though so i started on the back 9 since there was no one teeing off there. Made it 6 holes in no problems until the ranger chased after me and accused me of holding the entire course up even though there was no one behind me, nobody else complained and I was playing faster than everybody else. He continued to insult me so i called it quits right there. Went back to the clubhouse to ask for a refund. He tried to give me a rain check but told him I wouldnβt be coming back due to rude staff so he just laughed at me and said ok. Biggest waste of $50 that ill never get back.

Top notch course. Worth the rate to play here. Very slow on the weekends, but that's moreso on the skill level of the people trying to conquer this course than it is anyone else. Top public course in Macomb County.

We planned an outing there. We had 5 foursomes. We were charged $50 a person so the course collected $1000 from us. The last foursome was approaching the 6th hole and all of our golfers were approached and told we had to skip hole number 8. We were not golfing at the set pace the course mandates. Not given a warning. We were playing a scramble. Quite honestly they have their cart arrows a good 100 yd from the greens which makes it very difficult to play and not be able to drive-in their "restricted areas". That's what slows play up. They kept $55 of our money. Never offered us a beverage to compensate or even an I'm sorry. We will think twice about ever going there again.

Wanted to see what all the fuss was about. 2 different 9s thatβs for sure. Back 9 more open but also much more scenic with slope. Front typical parkland with trees and marshes and such. The greens were not in the best conditions when I went. Lots of divots and just slow. Wasnβt expecting that for a #1 rated metro Detroit course.

Golf course was great I shot ok but they let a group of 6 out in front of us and we had to wait forever to play very slow play at that point when your a group of 2 people probably will not play there again because of that

We were surprised by the inappropriate amount of ranger monitoring of the golfers. We were apparently per the rangers 8 mins behind some predetermined clubhouse timeframe for our round. We were coming off the green at the time and a ranger on a par 5 is telling us to either speed up or consider skipping a hole to catch up with guys in front of us which were walking off the green on the next hole in front of us per the rangers. Our foursome turned and saw that the foursome behind us was not even on the tee yet for the par 5 we just played. We put our hands up and said thereβs nobody behind us so why would we skip a hole just to be on top of another foursome. It was truly nonsensical. After the third such visit by a ranger we told them to just simply stop. No one is behind us and we are on the Tee & the foursome in front of us is walking off the green. Rangers really donβt know their role in the context of a fun sport. Very bad experience, no fun, wonβt be going there again.

Over priced course, rude rangers, making you skip holes even though no one is behind and the manager totally with β I donβt careβ attitude. Will never play here. We left after playing 9 holes due to constant nagging rangers.
