Absolutely HORRIBLE experience dealing with membership services.OR NOT! Called and asked about canceling because havenโt been able to utilize in several months due to health issues and was told had to go online and just use the search tool. After navigating through the webpage sent a email and filled out a form and then decided to call back and was told that because it was the 26th โone day past the required deadline to cancel service and stop paymentโ there was probably nothing that could be done. Needless to say no one bothered to reach out to me via email or phone call and the $71 was taken out of my account.

They do not respect people working a 9-5 schedule here. I pointed out to the front desk how ridiculous it is to close the pools for 3 hours from 4-7, and their response was to suggest I come in at 6 am as if I don't have a job to be ready for.
The exercise equipment is also a bit of a side grade to something you would get at a planet fitness, so I can't say that it justifies the price tag when approached as a gym.

I haven't been to a more dilapidated Y. The facilities have needed a renovation for a few decades atleast.
The fitness center lacks sufficient strength training equipment.
The sauna and steam room are behind a pay wall
The monthly membership fees are not valid for the severe infrastructure repairs this facility needs. The Portage and Kalamazoo Ys are the least equipped and most in need of renovating among the Ys I have seen in the Midwest.

It's a really nice facility! It's really contemporary and chill. I dont feel like I am going to be judged here. It does tend to be very busy all the time. The building is very large and new. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The llovker rooms have everything you would need in them. There are enough workout machines to hit every muscle in your body, and they have a weight room. They have the most treadmills I've ever seen in one place, so theres always a guarantee that one is open for you.

Hit this one on my travels through. I was pointed to the locker room, but that was it. 2 YMCA employees didnโt even know how to point me to the weights. The water fountain, in the one room I could find to workout in, ran out of water filling my water bottle.
The dude at the front with shoulder length hair was getting bombarded with questions and things and he was really nice to me and handled the pressure well.
Not the best first experience, but I got my workout in.

Used to be a great gym, management suddenly turned sour and started harassing my friend evertime he came to the gym about not having a membership despite having a key card and paying monthly. Each time they made him fill 15 minutes worth of documents out, wasting our time, only to harass him again. He is now suspended because they can't do their jobs right, Despite proof of him paying. Be warned they'll probably harass you too.

A great place to workout. Matrix machines and tons of free weights. Indoor mini track downstairs. Full amenity, like lap pools, spa and showers. Family bathrooms are available. Plenty of treadmills and bike/elliptical available
Cons:
Everyone hogs machines and scrolls social media between sets, clogging up the machines.
Apparently this is the place to go to post status updates.
Also, a lot of teenagers record and use their phones in the mens locker room, against policy.
It's a problem. Make a note of that.

The wet and dry sauna is an additional $20/ month
The classes are spectacular.
The facility is clean, cool and tidy.
The machines are up to date and work well
The pool is big. There is a really nice court system and upstairs is the courts.
The kids area is in the front and segregated from the rest of the building, security is high for it so I feel comfortable having the tiny humans in it.

Tried to simply get a membership started. I went in to ask simple questions โwhat time is the kid zone openโ I KNOW the fees and that itโs only 2 hoursโฆ KIM at the front desk apparently had a long reception day because she stated โIโll give you ALL the information and tell you when itโs open at the endโ just rude for absolutely no reason. I literally just wanted to get into the gym, she wanted to force a full conversion. Customer service here stinks with Kim in the lobby.

I will start this off with a good note. The facility has nice equipment, a pool, cardio room, and hot tubs.
Paying the fees we pay as members should come with a properly ran facility. The steam room in menโs locker room barely ever works. They re painted it and you can already see the grim building up in the steam room. Have you all ever heard of a weekly deep clean??? Whenever I have family in town I have to drive all the way to Grand Rapids because they allow me to bring a guest when the facility I pay my fees to doesnโt. They claim they are at max capacity, but the gym is never crowded. The sauna also seems like itโs never been deep cleaned. For the amount of money you all have rolling in you guys should really be cleaner. Allowing guest should be a given like it is at literally any other facility in America. We pay too much money to have our own family turned down. I am currently looking for a new gym for this exact reason.

I love the YMCA. The gym is well equipped and clean. Staff is friendly and helpful. Unique classes are offered - though some require a nominal fee. That said the fencing classes I take with my child are worth every penny. Both Kalamazoo and Portage YMCAs are a fantastic service to our community.

Weโve been members for almost twenty years, so obv weโre on board with the facilities and whatnot. Today something out of the ordinary happened that speaks to the character of many of the staff and crew there. Our eldest lost a set of keys that were located by a police officer. That officer called the Y (trying to track our eldest down, so credit where itโs due there) and the Y called us, the โaccounts billableโ party, instead of giving out a number. Iโm very happy to see their checks and balances (and just sticking to the rules) works as it should. Really did us a solid. Canโt say enough good things about them.

Love going to my swim classes for exercise. Hate the app for trying to get a space in class. Not once have I got right in my one class; i always get the wait list. Not sure how the app works that out when Im right on at 8 a.m. if there is that much response for a 9 am. Class why cant we get an 8 a.m. class added? I would happily come earlier so there is room for all and I can quit getting waitlisted. Most the time Im waitlisted I dont get in to the class. Once i got notified 15 minutes before a class that I got a spot but I didnt have time to drive there to get in and had to unregister.

Ymca is a nice place to go workout swimming take families itโs really heart felt warm environment to work out in only problem is they are all ways full v they donโt have enough family swim time where more families can go swim daily often for weight loss . So in my honest opinion we need to build another building for ymca with two pools three so more families can swim daily as much as often for weight loss better health . Swimming is easier on the body joints stuff one of the best ways to loss weight feel great .. Iโm for it build another YMCA

As someone from a larger urban area who visits family in Kalamazoo 3-4 times per year, the โNo Guest Passโ policy is quite prohibitive and, compared to other areas we visit, abnormal. This has to be yet another contributor to the statistical decline of the Y.

Great group fitness classes. Both the Portage Y and Maple St (KZoo) do a great job with facilities, courts and classes, however the Maple Y (you have access to both with membership) has a sauna, steam room and hot tub which the Portage location lacks. The women's locker room has a women only workout area within it with machines and weights. Both locations are great and provide child care options for active parents as well as a range of programs and classes for kids. Maple St. can be quite busy at times, and it can be hard to find parking.

Incredibly poor planning by YMCA. Last fall I could play racquetball and bring a friend sometimes pay $10 for my guest. Lo and behold, January 16, and I had a friend come with. He has new racquetball equipment he brought just for the day. Guess what? YMCA allows no guests! All during guests were allowed. Why not now? That is screwed up logic. Iโm sorry itโs not logical at all. We all need to adjust our image of the YMCA. It is not Christian, generous, or very organized. Shame on the YMCA Maple St, get your act together, please!

This facility is one of the most unprofessional places Iโve been too. The staff their donโt know to control their anger and will physically assault your children then they will call the police to have you banned for a year even though their staff is the one at fault and not you. The front desk clerk laughed in my husbands face when he asked about a military discount. Regardless of the discount, to laugh in someoneโs face for inquiring is hurtful and disrespectful. Her instructions were not clear because of her condescending attitude and tone. We told her we no longer wanted the membership and were going to the portage location. She acted confused as to why we were leaving. As if people are supposed to tolerate being talked to like they are toddlers. Her male co-worker kept whispering comments under his breath as we were leaving. The disrespect at this location.
