Iβm consistently surprised by how rude the employees are every time I visit. Even my pre-teen has noticed how unfriendly the staff is, EVERYTIME we come. The front desk team would really benefit from some customer service training.
Additionally, the open gym is not monitored at all and using it if you donβt play basketball is almost impossible. The men and boys playing basketball take over the entire space, and theyβre unwilling to share any court space. You will have to worry about being hit by basketballs while trying to use the area because they donβt have personal space awareness or consideration that anyone else would like to use the space.
Overall, it has not been a positive experience at this Y.

I would be very cautious about signing up for youth sports leagues. We have had two failed experiences (fall flag football and winter basketball) due to limited attendance, poor coordination, and terrible time management. We were notified 8:30 pm the night before that the league we signed our son up for was canceled for the season. Hoping their coordination comes together.

When the pool opens for lap swim after a class, be sure to be waiting at your lane when class gets out and put your stuff down in front of your lane, others will claim the lane if you walk away or go to sauna awaiting for lap swim to open. A member scolded me to wait the intermission from 10a to 10:15a once but if the lap swim signs are up, no need to wait. Some of the kind members offer to share a lane. I have come here to swim often now, and staff advised it is okay to swim as soon as class is out and lap swim signs are up. They have signs for closed pool or classes and you can check online for schedule, which accounts for setup and sign change, so you might be able to start swimming 10 minutes before it shows scheduled if the signs are already posted. One time it was under maintenance, but that is common for all pools to close sometimes for that. Although my first few times I went had some small struggles, I was promptly helped and I am enjoying the pool, hottub and sauna. I recomend as a good place to go. Pool is always staffed with life guards who answer all my questions.

The Forest Lake YMCA is an incredibly run facility.
A recent post specifically called out a staff member (Kelsey) with a negative review. Frankly, I can't even fathom what galaxy that person is from, since Kelsey specifically assisted me with a membership issue. She is actually a truly incredible human.
As far as the facilities, the administration has done a great job in a dynamic time for Forest Lake as the community explodes in population size and demographic changes.

Shady organization who overprices memberships. Kelsey is a disgruntled employee who treats customers with little to no respect when asked to simply do her job for the company she works for. While most employees are nice and friendly, business practices and employees like Kelsey make this an organization I simply canβt support. Despite their claims to be a β familyβ and βcommunityβ based organization they do not have the best interests of the community in mind.

They will not tell you about the Forest Lake resident passes, you can get 6 for the year. They will sell you the membership however. It's such a money thing with this place. If I would have known about those I would have instead of paying for a membership for the last 3 months and my child only attending 3x. If you call and ask questions you will get an attitude thrown right at you!

Kind staff - great programming - welcoming lobby, great childcare options, classes, sports. Lots of options for everyone in the family. Only lost one star for the occasionally packed gym floor and wish there were more open swimming hours where the water slide was actually open for my older swimmers.

Front of house staff is super nice. I have not had any real account problems, so I just wave as I walk by. I've been utilizing the subscription personal trainer program for a year now with Rob Hanson. We monitor progress through the body scanner system. Since joining last year, I've dropped 8%+ in body fat (~25lbs of fat loss), gained 5+ pounds of muscle, and am now in the best shape of my life. It's definitely yielded positive results in the dating world. Rob setup awesome programs for me in both exercise programs and nutrition advisement. He's really good at diffusing my anxieties about different equipment/exercises and gym norms (how to deal with people taking up equipment, interruptions, etc.) He took the time to coach me to grow vs. just throwing everything at me all at once. He's got amazing patience. I now feel extremely comfortable in being able to run in solo to get a good session in.
The gym itself is always being cleaned and it shows in how decent it always looks. The maintenance staff is awesome. If any equipment goes down, it's generally fixed within the week. It's not a norm for equipment to be down though. The daytime crowd is extremely casual, open, and fun to be around. Evenings can get busy with teenagers in the weight area on occasion. Not sure there's anything that can or should be done about that. I'd rather the kids be getting exercise than out in the streets causing problems. The Y does have staff keeping a good eye on the area to make sure it's not getting out of hand. Thanks to Rob, I'm still able to figure out a good routine to still get a good pump in amongst the crowd. The kids are generally respectful, and I have not had any actual issues with them other than the distractions/taken up equipment. It's a public gym, so you're going to have to deal with public.
It's definitely been worth the cost to get my life turned around for the better. All my numbers from my recent physical are significantly improved since last year. Couldn't be more thankful that I took the plunge.

The way you line up for pickle ball is prone to cheatingβ¦
Most places use the chairs as the lineβ¦ at Forest Lake they put the paddles in a couple boxes, when I was there I was skipped over twiceβ¦ a guy came in after me but played first, and a different time someone moved my paddle in the boxβ¦. Using the chairs as the line up for playing doesnβt have these problemsβ¦
You can also SEE who plays next, or you can separate yourself from other players that you might not want to play withβ¦. They need to fix this.
Itβs simple sit in the chair, move down when the next 4 get up to play.
I payed a lot of money for my paddle, I donβt like leaving it in the box or other people handling it.
I might add that sitting with different people while waiting in line is a social exercise, otherwise it seemed like all the women were sitting together and the guys were standingβ¦ one guy got up because he was in the middle of all the women, he went and stood with the guysβ¦
When the chairs are the line, you always sit with new people.

Update 2023: staff at the front desk were great. I have been to other YMCAβs and this is one of the nicest ones. I donβt understand.
Nice and clean facility. However, started out with a BUMP when entering with my out of state card. Cranky woman was dismissive and unhelpful.
Fortunately, another very friendly front desk employee took charge and admitted me. π
Finally, GREAT Silver Sneakers class with Alex (Alexa?) Good workout with options to pick one's own level.
Update: summer 2022 if I lived in the area I would be joining. Good classes. Clean. π
The front desk staff very pleasant.

The monthly membership fee is a little steep but the facilities are top notch. The pool area has a lap pool, a jacuzzi and a kids side that is no deeper than 3 1/2 feet. It has a water slide, a small "lazy river" racetrack pool and a bunch of spraying water activities. They also have an outdoor splash pad with even more stuff.
The gym, track and exercise areas are nice with a good variety and quantity of equipment. In addition to the male/female locker rooms they also have a family locker room with individual shower rooms which is wonderful if you're there with kids. We're very happy to be members.

Gyms literal never open thereβs always stupid practices the only time itβs open is when itβs late at night or when people are at work so annoying when you pay money to play basketball but you canβt play because itβs practice time and then when it is open itβs one side so itβs super cramped

Utilize this gym quite frequently and typically donβt have many complaints. Recently, there are a ton of high school and middle school kids in the weight area who just loiter around the equipment & mess around with each other. It gets really frustrating trying to dodge them and ask them if you can use equipment. They leave weights all over the place and donβt clean up after themselves. It never used to be this way so not sure why it is now.

This location does a horrible job of keeping their equipment in good working order. I complained about a footstrap missing on their matrix bike for 6 months! Now there is another bike with a broken strap that I informed them of a month ago, it's still broken. I was told by numerous people it was "on order". Then found out after asking another person they are actually all laying in a drawer! He replaced the strap but it's for the wrong foot, so it doesn't fit correctly. Also, they recently moved their cardio machines around and now they are so close together youre on top of one another.

Kids stuff(childcare) is the best, shout-out to Lulu and all the other wonderful staff, my kids love you all and we are beyond thankful for your hard work! After being longtime anytime fitness members, we decided to get a Y membership because of childcare and the vast amenities for kids/families. As a parent, it can be difficult to trust strangers with your children. I have to give so much credit and appreciation to the childcare team at the forest lake YMCA. From day 1 they were friendly, welcoming, and our girls were comfortable being dropped off to play. Our oldest (2.5 years) has so much fun playing and doing crafts/coloring. Cannot remember every personβs name, however, Lulu (especially Lulu), Tayler, Kaycie (not sure on spelling), and a few others have been absolutely amazing and make the environment as good as it is!! Huge thanks to them for their smiling faces, patience with all the children as well as their friendly conversation when we drop our girls off each time.

I have had a membership since pre-covid. I am finally writing this review because things have gone so down hill since we started our membership.
The first year at the Y, we loved! Towels, open until 10pm, and most people I talk to go here for the sauna and pool. Classes are fun if you can make it.
My family received an email from the y when the state shut down, notifying us everything was closed until further notice. We got another email later, asking members more than once to keep memberships open, and paid in full, since they would raise your rates if you quit and then rejoined.
We kept our membership paid in full because we had friends who worked there, and we thought we were supporting them. Then, they fired most of those people without any notice. They shut down the lino location. By the way, here we are, 3 years later, and our membership fee was raised anyway. So that was completely dishonest. Every hardship from the shut down has been burdened on the members, even though we paid to keep the doors open.
The worst part of it all, they have not gone back to normal hours 3 YEARS LATER! They have also completely discontinued towel service, the sauna seems like it is often shut down for repairs cuz teenagers are putting junk on the sauna rocks and breaking stuff. The weightlifting equipment is often full and busy since the hours are shortened. The other day a group of boys came into the sauna and started puffing an ecig.
My family has emailed corporate and sent more than one kind complaint, and nothing has changed...or barely been acknowledged. If there was another place in town with a sauna that opened, I would most definitely switch. Eventually, that day will probably come.
I hope someone reads this and actually takes it into consideration. Whenever I talk to other members or employees it's only negative criticism for the Y and their management.
Sad but true. Thanks.

If u are looking to lift weights, avoid this place . Countless underage kids sitting on the equipment taking selfies and texting most of the time. When speaking with staff they say there is not enough of them to supervise, as the two at the front desk were alone and surfing the internet. After this occurring multiple times now i will cancel and go elsewhere.

I had membered here pre covid and again when they reopened. 4 weeks ago my employment was phased out and out of work. I wanted to do a membership hold until I regained employment. The sales supervisor opted to issue a full refund on current month of $73 and said it would be mailed to me following a 10 day processing time. Its been 16 days, no refund. I have requested status of refund multiple times and I am avoided with no responses. In the meantime, I regained employment and asked same sales supervisor of reinstating my membership. I was told I would be getting my prior refund in the mail and would need to be charged right away $36 to carry me from 2/28 to 3/14 and would be charged again on 3/15 for a full month of $73.
Issues have been from point of renewing membership this week I was locked out of the Y app that allows me to book pool time which is the only reason I go to the Y. The same sales supervisor was and is aware I am locked out and that I cannot make pool reservations myself. She refuses to in the interim of solving lock out issue make two reservations for me. So I am forced to pay for membering and am prohibited in usage . She has advised her staff to not make bookings for me knowing Im locked out. She calls it a level playing field with other members. The other side of this is the Y app is ran through a third party service for the Y, the Y has been unwilling to contact their third party app service to correct my issue and have told me I need to. All I have is website contact from a popup that shows when attempting to login for reporting an issue. Its been three days, I have a ticket # and have not heard back since.
I have continued to ask about my refund with no reply and am now because the supervisors disconnect and unwillingness to provide needed customer service am disputing the $36 and lock out of the Y app. I was given a document that shows intent of refund for the $73 and am placing claim with creditcard to reverse charge since they have not sent me a refund and have also done this with the $36 renewal since Im not able to book pool times due to lock out of App. The problem is the Y has shown a culture of not knowing what customer service is or should be through bad leadership controlling those who do know and want to help. My encounters have shown, there is strong supervisory control to do as she feels is first protecting her choices or lack of and not maintaining existing membership and growing it through positive helpful customer service. The behavior of not providing legitimate customer service is dishonest and reflects poorly on the Y as a organization. I was a multi decade member at west st paul Y before they closed and switched to Forest Lake a few years ago. One supervisor is clueless on the Y's founding values and does not understand what customer service is.. its solving problems and making things right with service. They can refund my money and end this. Its too bad I need the swim time twice a week and clearly Im not valued as part of their member base.

One more update: remember the previous one about the money. You would think they would make enough but now there is a 2$ increase for cleaning and staffing, so it really is about tje money.
Here's a little update. You tell a lifeguard you have a swimming pass and they deny you swimming when the pool isn't really full, so you try to ask them, they start walking away for you not believing you have a reservation, since the front desk failed to mention that. It shows this Christian Organization is about the money more than the people.
Been there before a long time ago, but recently did the BUDDY membership, and Eva has been very helpful and informative.

The past 3 years have not been kind to me so I have been trying to be kind to it. Here at the Y they keep the machines up and running with great interaction using your phone or just ear buds connected to the equipment. The staff is extremely well trained, pleasent, kind, understanding, helpful. If you need to make a plan to lose 5 to 305 pounds or to add muscle mass they are there to help. This place was not built to match the amount of families in the Forest Lake area with small children. Not enough family locker rooms, yet huge men and women lockers. When you get to the pool, you usually have minimal area to swim because everything is roped off for swim lessons. On a positive note, most of the employees are very friendly and helpful. The gym is also large with enough equipment

This place is a joke! No one ever answer the phone for the aquatic center it takes almost a week for then to return your call! When you finally get to talk to anyone they hang up on you if they do not know the answer to your question. Absolutely ridiculous you pay all this money and you canβt even get good customer service

One of the best Y's around. Very clean, full and friendly staff. Amazing child watch area included with membership with inside play place, toy room and outdoor playground. Great splash pad and pool area. All the workout equipment is pretty new and in great shape.

Very disappointed in the Y. I was told I could suspend my memerbership for at anytime and told them I would be doing that for June and July but when I called they said I had to come in to do that. I said I would come as soon as I had a chance, then when I went, they said I had to pay for june anyway or it would go to collections. It s inconvenient in the first place to drive there just to suspend your membership. I just started going there a few months ago and am cancelling completely now.
