I came to Functional Patterns looking for help with back pain caused by scoliosis. I had tried physical therapy a few times but didn’t have any real pain relief. After I began implementing the posture techniques I learned in Functional Patterns, my pain decreased significantly. My posture has also visibly improved since I started 4 months ago. Working with Nick Gassvig, I learned how to work out in a way that reinforces functional movements and also keeps my back pain-free. With Nick’s help, I was able to regain a lot of mobility in my torso and lumbar spine. I also took some of the group classes at FP Minnesota, and found the other practitioners all offered helpful observations and suggestions for each person in the class based on their specific bodies and situations.

We signed up our son for the Functional Patterns kids class because we wanted him to build healthy movement habits early. He’s been having a blast with Anthony and Will, and we’ve already noticed he’s more coordinated and confident in how he moves. It’s great to see him learning how to exercise while having fun!

I started FP in October 2022 due to increasing knee, hip, low back and heel pain that had a negative impact on all aspects of my daily life but especially being active and playful with my young twins.

I routinely sought relief through massage and chiropractic care which helped temporarily but my pain would never completely resolve.

I started working 1:1 sessions with Frida just once weekly and after 20 weeks I joined group classes. Within 3 months nearly ALL the pain and instability I was experiencing was resolved. My hip took another 6 months to fully restore.

My life is very different without pain. More energy, better sleep and mood, and I have no restrictions on the activities that I can do. I’ve even started sprint interval training for fun; in addition to chasing my kids of course!

Pain before FP - 8 out of 10
Pain after FP - 0 out of 10

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving FP a try!

I’ve had an excellent experience training with Nick Gaasvig from Functional Patterns Minnesota. He has helped me address knee instability and discomfort while also improving my overall physical strength and postural alignment. Through his guidance, I’ve gained a much better understanding of biomechanics and proper exercise execution.

He is patient, knowledgeable, motivating, and incredibly detail-oriented. His ability to explain complex movements in a clear way has made a big difference in my progress. I really value his professionalism as well as the personal attention he brings to each session. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their health, movement, and overall quality of life.

Joining Functional Patterns Minnesota has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health. The community here is genuine, calm, and supportive. I always feel encouraged to grow—not just physically, but mentally as well. It’s more than just a gym; it’s a space that fosters real, lasting change in how we move and live.
All the practitioners are skilled, friendly and passionate about what they do, resulting in great service. As a physical therapist myself, I really like the emphasis on exercising in a way that is focused on longevity and improving performance in a sustainable manner. This sets FPMN apart from other gyms.

I’m 73 years old and had painful sciatic nerve going down my leg. My wife and I attended the introductory session and joined the 8 lesson program. The detailed assessment and lessons completely took away the leg pain and Sumed,my therapist, has shown me amazing ways to rebuild my core. Life changing. I highly recommend their program.

Like any human, this community falls short. For the majority of people in pain, you are likely to experience some benefit from their knowledge and cues.

HOWEVER; if you have dealt, or presently deal, with complex psychological pain or dysfunctions, 10/10 would NOT reccomend.

Yes, in a few cases they may be able to reduce some level of "anxiety," by reducing the effort the system needs to perform certain functions, but their understanding of neurological function and behavior is very simplistic, idealistic, and impractical for the "neurospicy" folk. You know who you are.

You can learn a lot that can benefit you for the rest of your life, but the only intention that matters to them is conforming to their image of how they believe humans ought to function and there is a select group of accepted behaviors and expressions. If you aren't socially adjusted, go, literally, anywhere else.

Like any other human, they don't know what they don't know. Be gentle with yourself if they hurt you like they hurt me, worsening my biological function by triggering psychological dysfunction despite my commitment to their cause.

I see you doing the best you can, you found this review section which means you're searching for solutions.

Go ahead and try the 10 week online course, but keep your reservations against diving all-in with this particular community associated to this location.

I will never step foot in FP Minnesota again, not only because I was conspired against and unjustly banned, but because they had me convinced this was THE way to live that would optimize my potential. Fool me once...

With care,

Highly recommend Functional Patterns Minnesota for anyone looking to get out of pain and lead a more active life. When I found FP in September 2024, I was experiencing low back and shoulder pain and tingling sensations in my shoulders and arms. I could hardly bend over to tie my shoes (see before/after video of me pretending to put on a pair of socks), let alone run or ride a bike. After just two months of working with my practitioner, Sumedh, and going to group classes, my back pain and the tingling sensations were gone. After 8 months of training, I now feel stronger, more balanced and able to maintain better posture throughout my day. I continue to train with Sumedh and attend classes at the gym and I'm hopeful that this spring and summer I'll be able to bike and run without pain!

I injured my hip playing volleyball a week before I was heading to New Zealand for the rugby World Cup, panic moment. I reached out to Frida and was in the gym getting one on one help with in a couple days. They gave me movements to work through that instantly helped as well as things to add into my workouts while traveling that completely alleviated my pain by our first game, a month later. HIGHLY recommend checking Functional Patterns out.

I first learned about FP in January of 2024 when I was traveling in Cape Town, South Africa. I met a practitioner who told me about how he worked with clients to optimize their biomechanics. As a former Exercise Science/Kinesiology major, it sparked my interest immediately. He encouraged me to look into it and find a gym near me when I returned to the states.

I returned home to Minnesota in February, but to be honest, I drug my feet. And then in March, I hiked the W Trek in Patagonia, a 5 day backpacking trip in the mountains of Chile. And while trekking the breath-taking views, I vividly remember thinking, "I want to be able to do this for the next 30-40 years of my life." And when I got home, I searched for an FP gym near me and found Frida and FP Minnesota. The rest is history. I've been hooked since.

I am a former college hockey player and have always been active: tennis, lacrosse, downhill skiing, horseback riding, triathlons, cycling, yoga, hiking. And gratefully have been largely pain-free. However, looking back, I wish I had FP then. I have no doubt I would have been a better athlete in all facets.

What I have grown to love about FP is that it is for everyone. All ages. All backgrounds. Those with chronic pain. And those without. I happen to be someone without chronic pain, but if I'm being honest, I'm certain that if I hadn't started FP now, that in 5-10 years I would have chronic pain. Because I do have dysfunctions, and at some point these dysfunctions, if not addressed, would catch up with me.

I keep coming back to FP week after week for many reasons. The top three being:

1. Knowledge - every time I do to a session I learn somethin new or make a new connection, this speaks to my science background and keeps me constantly learning and growing; while my body is getting strong, my mind is getting smarter.

2. Community - coming to classes 3-4 times a week taught by a great group of practitioners and working 1:1 with Frida has created a sense of community in my weekly flow, and has supported greater balance in my life (which historically has been dominated by demanding work streams).

3. Progress - at the end of the day, the progress I see and the progress I feel is what keeps me coming back. From planks to lat pumps, scap scoops and t spine extension, I love that the journey is the destination and that I'll never "arrive" but rather as we solve for one problem, we then find the next.

To say I'm hooked on FP is an understatement. I've told all my friends and family about it. I've taken MFR tools to Iceland and Hawaii. I've trained in Frida's gym, my living room, and on the continent of Africa. I follow practitioners from all over the world on Instagram. And I even created an FP photo album on my phone where I study the pics and videos Frida takes for me. (Reminds me of college hockey days - game tape study.)

FP is the most impactful decision I made in 2024. And possibly the last decade. Personally, I believe health is the greatest investment we can make, and time is our greatest resource. FP is a high-value option for anyone looking to live each day to the fullest today and in all the years to come.

I had been following FP on instagram for a long time and always wanted to try it. I finally had the chance when I was in Minnesota for a long weekend.

I did the assessment + 2 sessions with Frida and I couldn’t believe how much my body responded in that short amount of time! My tight hips felt more open and my painful low back felt strong. It felt like I had FINALLY found what I needed to be doing to reconnect my core and address my lower back pain.

I am doing the 10 week program now and planning to come back for a few months, so I can continue training.

Thank you Frida for finding time in your schedule to train me on such short notice!

Functional Patterns has improved my quality of life in more ways that I can articulate. I began working with a practitioner less than 2 years ago. When I arrived for my assessment, I was in so much pain in my lower back that I couldn’t run on the treadmill or even bend forward to touch my toes. I began experiencing lower back pain in high school while playing sports and found out I had scoliosis at that time. I continued to struggle with back pain for my entire adult life. I tried physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, pain medications, cortisone injections, weight training, yoga, pilates, stretching, and cycling. I was no longer able to make it through a week at work, or even go for short walks when I arrived at FP. Within 6 months, I was beginning to have pain-free days and go for longer walks again. In under a year, I was able to run again and my pain levels were very low the vast majority of the time. I am so grateful for the community at FP, what they have taught me gave me my life back! I highly recommend training at Functional Patterns.

Functional Patterns Mn changed my life!
I am a 70 year old man with a 10 year history of lower back pain that was affecting
my walking on vacations, etc, and life was declining. I was in pain whenever standing or walking. I could walk 300 yards but had to sit for 30 seconds before I continued. I was always on the lookout for a place to rest.
I took Ibuprofen almost daily to the max dosage. The doctor even gave me Prilosec prescription to keep my stomach intact with all that ibuprofen and nsaid use.
On a trip to Germany, a friends son(Daniel Sutter from Nuremburg) who is a Physical trainer, said he wanted to see me walk upright next time he saw me. I was walking bent forward and the doctors called it “supermarket syndrome”. I wanted to be the one to push the cart.
MRI’s from an orthopedic firm showed I had spinal stenosis, arthritis and aging bones. I did a couple SI shots before I started FP and had a chiropractor work on my SI and back every week. The Doctors talked of burning my nerve in my spine to block the pain…..

Daniel showed me some excercises and contact info for Functional PatternsMN.I couldn’t get in till Feb 1, so I took the FP 10 week online course. This taught me the ABC’s of what they do and how.
My back started improving. Every week a little better….
I started with Frida the first of Feb and saw her every week or two…I saw improvement every week. I am and have been, pain free in my back for weeks now.My posture is going more vertical and I am more flexible for doing everyday chores. I no longer hurt when I roll over in bed at night.
I seldom take ANY painkillers like ibuprofen. I have no need for the orthopedic doctors, and no need for my chiropractor.!!!!
Functional patterns changed my life for the better .I know many of my friends would benefit but they want a magic bullet with a surgeon or a medication. I feel great and plan to continue to work out at FP.
They teach you the correct way to work your core for the benefit of a better gait. Noone else seems to focus on this. I have learned a lot on how to keep this aged body on the move.
FP rocks!

Update: Did you know there is an FP North Suburbs location? Pro tip, checkout their new location north of the cities at Prodigy MMA. They are renting space out of this gym and has been my new favorite combination of training!

Functional Patterns changed my life. The training system is the best out there. The community here is full of wonderful humans wanting to better themselves and those around them. The gym is epic and gets open air in the Summer and Red lights at night.
Best of all, the trainers are life changing. The attention and transformative potential they can have for people is unreal. I've thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend training with Austin, Frida, or Lukas!

I have been coming to FP 2 times a week for personal training, for almost 2 years now, and nothing has helped my back pain, as much as FP. After a debilitating diving accident when I was 12 years old left me in chronic back pain, I tried physical therapy, chiropractor, personal trainers, massage, considered PRP injections, stem cells, etc... Faced with only surgery left, I sought any last alternatives, and stumbled across Functional Patters of Minnesota. If you have a sports injury, or back pain, or just want to feel younger, I strongly encourage you to invest in yourself, and your health, and give Functional Patterns a try. You will not regret it 🙂

I am approaching my one year anniversary working with Michelle at FP MN and it’s an exciting step seeing progress in my overall direction of health/wellness. A mom of three young kiddos with three different birth stories, severe diastasis recti (4 fingers width), 30+ years of poor posture habits, and lack of body confidence brought me here. After completing the 10-week course online and working weekly with Michelle, I cannot stress the importance of this in my life and future body function — especially post-partum and in my mid-thirties. I now feel safer doing movements involving my core and have learned how the body and its movements are interconnected. Michelle is extremely patient and always finds ways to break the motions down for me. I am very impressed with this program and recommend it to anyone looking for real results that will last beyond a gym membership.

I came to FP due to back pain and have been pain free since I started, my core has never felt stronger and overall my body and mind feels a lot better. I have been so impressed that I even enrolled by dad.

Functional Patterns is a unique and innovative approach to fitness that emphasizes functional movement and the importance of proper biomechanics in exercise.

One of the standout features of Functional Patterns is its emphasis on whole body movement and integration. Rather than isolating specific muscle groups, Functional Patterns focuses on training the body as a cohesive unit and teaching proper movement patterns. This approach not only helps to build functional strength and improve overall physical performance, but it can also help to prevent injury and improve posture.

The workouts themselves are challenging and diverse, incorporating a variety of equipment and techniques. The instructors are knowledgeable and supportive, and the atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive.

I highly recommend Functional Patterns MN for anyone looking to improve their functional movement, strength, and overall physical performance. It's a unique and effective approach to fitness that is well worth checking out.

I would highly recommend working with any of the practitioners at Functional Patterns Minnesota. Regardless of whether you are athletic or not, the practitioners will meet you where you’re at but also challenge your personal goals after continued training.
I have been training with Frida consistently for about 5 years and Austin for about 4 years in 1-on-1 sessions to improve my biomechanics. By working on my biomechanics, I have significantly decreased my anxiety. This has increased my stress tolerance allowing me to perform better professionally as an engineer and practitioner. I am now able to handle overtime and work long shifts on a weekly basis without burning out compared to when I was in my late teenager years.
I am now 26 years old with years of sobriety under my belt and continue to feel better as I prioritize my biomechanics, sleep, and diet in that order of importance. Under rare circumstances that I’m under unmanageable stress, I can functionally cope or have the body awareness to take time to relax without resorting to drug use or addiction.
Whenever I work with a practitioner at FP Minnesota, the advice given is directly referenced to the greatest athletes in the world to mimic their mechanics. This requires adaptive problem solving and being able to change quickly, which has enhanced my critical thinking skills as an engineer.
Functional Patterns has given me a level of confidence in my training to prevent injuries that far exceeds what I’ve ever had in my history of traditional training methods. By exclusively training Functional Patterns, I have quantifiably improved my max sprinting mechanics, transferring over to an increased max speed.

Functional Patterns is a potent, but bitter medicine that can connect you with the infinite potential of your body. Part of the experience is unlearning the patterns and behaviors that have contributed to pain or other physical limitations. However, learning to move in a way that promotes physical awareness and healing in your body will reap huge dividends. In Functional Patterns, they will always put your longevity and health first. Most importantly, it's fun and never repetitive, as the practitioners put a great deal of effort into making the sessions engaging, informative and interesting.
I have seen impressive gains in my performance and structure as a competitive handball player and learning from Functional Patterns Minnesota has been both humbling and illuminating. I now move and perform better than before, but with significantly less stress and pain and effort.
To those that don't believe in the results of Functional Patterns, the proof, for me, is self evident. Nothing I ever did before ever made my body feel this good and strong. I know that Functional Patterns has given me the tools to not only move and perform better, but also to keep me performing well into old age. And that should be everyone's goal!

FP Minnesota and the team that is built there has provided me a level of foundation I have never found before. I have been able to better address my concerns stemming from my back and hip pain than from anything I have tried in the past. I now have the tools to correctly help alleviate pain and symptoms when they arise. In the last seven months of doing this, the pain is becoming less and less and I no longer have extended periods of debilitating pain — which is very crucial for my profession of being a nurse and being on my feet for 12-16 hours at a time. Everyone there is truly rooting for you and you feel empowered every time you step foot inside. I have to provide a special shout out to my practitioner Michelle — Michelle has been instrumental in helping me make changes. She has this amazing ability to provide a level of compassion to what I have gone through, mixed with the perfect amount of pushing me to be the best I can be. I have never seen myself be as toned as I am now with this newfound level of confidence and I’ve only just begun 💪🏼

Before I started working with Michelle at Functional Patterns Minnesota, I thought that having joint pain and groaning to sit and stand was just a normal part of turning 30 and being in the construction field. After these last 3 months, not only do I feel and move better than I have in the last 10 years, but I am no longer concerned with the longevity in my career of choice. Michelle is an extremely patient coach and provides a great example of understanding Functional Patterns principles and the lifestyle that comes with it.

Before training FP I didn’t know how to move my body in an optimal and regenerative way. I had done strength training in the past, with no real improvement on how I felt. Contrary to that, training FP has improved how I feel immensely not only in my body (less sore when I wake up in the AM, no longer noticing knees cracking, reduced feeling of chest compression), but also in my mind and mood. It has made me feel more confident. I have much better physical awareness and can track and control my breathing, posture, and body language more now. I now notice that I feel anxious not because of overwhelming thoughts, but because of a change in my breathing and heart rhythm. FP has empowered me because by changing my body I can monitor and manage my anxiety in a way that actually works. Thanks Michelle!

I have been working with Austin for nearly 3 years now and I could not say enough good things about him and Functional Patterns. I was diagnosed with a serious arthritic autoimmune condition years ago and was in so much pain. I could hardly walk let alone stand for more than a few minutes. Austin started from square 1 and built me back up. I am now sprinting and working all day on my feet. There was times when I was so mentally and physically worn down due to my autoimmune condition and past injuries from being in the military that I did not want to keep going. FP and basic health principles that the FP community preaches (water, light, movement) brought me out of a very bad place. I could go on, all I have to say is FP saved me.

When I first arrived at Functional Patterns Minnesota in 2018 I was physically and emotionally exhausted. All through my 20s I was dealing with serious inflammatory skin issues that were overwhelming to daily try to cover up, chronic fatigue, long-standing anxiety, as well as circulatory and digestive issues. I didn’t want to settle for band aid fixes and was always trying to get to the root of my problems but neither western medicine nor the thousands of dollars I spent out of pocket to see herbalists, acupuncturists, functional medicine practitioners, trauma therapists, etc gave me anything more than temporary relief at best. I was eating high quality organic foods, following strict food elimination protocols, trying western prescribed topical creams as well as natural remedies, and engaging in a wide variety of movement practices yet my wheels were spinning. It was extremely frustrating and discouraging to not be getting better despite putting so much time and resources into trying to be well.

My challenges were further compounded in 2017 when I was hit by a van while riding my bicycle causing a traumatic brain injury and my body to feel like it was saran-wrapped (tight and restricted). Regular migraines, further hormonal imbalance, weight gain, and mental health challenges layered on top of my already tired body.

Since training with the FP Minnesota team, my body has become more symmetrical and I’ve become less inflamed, improved my digestion, lost 30#, increased muscle mass, and learned to move more athletically. I have nearly eliminated my migraines and skin issues and my mental health has significantly improved with anxiety/panic attacks no longer being an issue.

FP has given me my life back. I am now moving and feeling better than I have at any other point in my life and I know that I am just scratching the surface of how much more I can improve. Huge thanks to the FP team for helping give me the tools to understand how to fix my biomechanics as well as my mindset to orient myself towards greater health. Much appreciation to the clients as well who help create an encouraging environment in classes and with shared learning of how we can all get to a more desired spot. FP MN is the place to be!

Thank you to Frida and the FP MN team! I was a college athlete and I always considered myself to be relatively “in shape”. However I still struggled with daily hip pain especially after activities that I thought I was doing to improve my health like long-distance running, yoga, and weightlifting. Starting FP was a really humbling experience for me because it allowed me to see my imbalances/dysfunctions so clearly and understand why they were causing me constant hip aches and repeated hamstring injuries. FP is the only way to truly improve movement efficiency and overall health. Thanks to the trainers at FP and the online FP courses, I’m no longer overworking myself trying to work out twice a day. Yet I feel healthier, I can sprint faster, and my overall mood is improved! I definitely recommend FP Minnesota - they have made some life-changing improvements for me and many others.
