Truly the most comfortable and rewarding gym experience I've ever had! The coaches are patient, knowledgeable, kind, ability-inclusive, and helpful. I have loved every workout because of the atmosphere here. been going here almost 3 years now and my deadlift has gone from a 1-rep-max of 135lb to 355lb as of last week!! wow!!!

Exercises at Solcana in trans community was nice. Everyone was kind, helpful and supportive. Garret, the instructor, was easy to talk with, knowledgeable, and had a pleasant music playlist. He even let me know I could suggest my own playlist and he’d play it. Working out isn’t my favorite thing to do, but necessary, and Solcana makes it much easier to approach. I look forward to getting healthier there!

I can’t say enough glowing things about Solcana, their team, and the members!

There’s a genuine care they give you as you navigate your fitness journey. The crew makes each individual feel seen in more ways than just your lifting form.

As far as I’m concerned they created the community fitness model! A membership at Solcana feels good, whether you miss some days or go every day, you know your money is going back to the community and building something incredible!

The fellow members at Solcana rock! Quick to help newbies, explain EMOMs, and dole out high fives. When we see other in the wild there’s that knowing glance and nod that we’re in super special club and it feels good!

The equipment is top notch, and they have a couple showers. It’s perfect!

This has been such a welcoming space for me and my middle-aged body to learn how to lift. The facilities and trainers are all amazing, and the athletes that come in are so supportive!

I highly recommend Solcana to anyone interested in weight lifting who's intimidated or turned off by the stereotypical gym atmosphere. :+)

Solcana has been my first experience with gym classes and I was unsure if it would be something I would enjoy or if it would be overwhelming. I appreciated the inclusive environment and experienced a sense of camaraderie among the people there. It was enjoyable to workout within community and not as isolated individuals (how most gyms seem to me). I felt like the instructor checked in regarding my form and/or capability at a reasonable rate and was encouraging and enthusiastic throughout the class.

Friendly gym with welcoming vibe for all. I feel the benefits of how much stronger Ive gotten thanks to Solcana classes. Queer-positive, size and age diverse, women-owned. A very open and inviting space! The instructors know what they are doing and lead with confidence. Queer, trans, non binary inclusive gym, that has classes for all types of bodies. Provides variations of movements for more accessibility, and has sliding scale scholarships if fees are an issue. Solcana made me fall in love with power lifting, and made the gym feel more like a community vs a thing to check off my to do list.

In many other fitness spaces, I’ve often felt out of place as the largest person in the room. No one has ever explicitly told me I don’t belong, but the atmosphere often makes me feel awkward and self-conscious. I came to Solcana’s Fat Fitness class expecting it to be differentβ€”a place where I wouldn’t have to worry about not fitting in.

On arriving to the space for their Fat Fitness class I was told outright that I wasn’t fat enough for the class, but that I could stay for today. I was told that the description of how they define fat for the purposes of the class on their website (size 16 and above) was outdated. I felt like I was intruding on a space that was apparently not for me, so I left before class started. Solcana brands themselves as inclusive, yet as a space they have unwritten conditional rules to gatekeep access. That is the opposite of inclusivity.

I took the beginner class at Solcana and it truly was worth every penny and minute. The experience was welcoming and empowering, and it really shifted my mindset around fitness. Both the quality of knowledge and the experience was great- I learned so much over the few weeks I was there. I really encourage anyone to check them out, but especially beginners who feel intimidated by fitness!! And I really mean beginners- even if the only experience you’ve had in a gym is during a pe class I think this gym and the people in it can make moving your body a fun experience. It was the first time I didn’t feel self conscious in a fitness environment, and safe to ask questions. Everyone I encountered from fellow gym goers, instructors, and office staff were extremely kind and encouraging. As a final note of confidence, I’m a night owl who willingly got up for 7am classes, so take that as you will.

The vast majority of people there (patrons and instructors) are some combination of queer, fat, and 50+, and that's so incredible in a fitness space. Nearly a year ago I signed up for a beginner class at Solcana and was terrified. I had never been to a gym before, and quite honestly was too intimidated to attempt lifting heavier weights on my own. I am in town for work for two weeks and wanted to try out a local gym that might be similar to the classes I take at home. Solcana’s Sunday community class sounded perfect! Unfortunately when I arrived, I learned that the class had been cancelled - however, Cate and her team were so welcoming, it only made me more interested in joining their community! Best gym ever! Trans and queer led, offers black strength, trans strength and masters (50+) strength classes, etc. Incredibly body positve, to the degree that i have never heard any staff ever initiate a conversation about weightloss or muscle building unless someone asked first. Even then, its hardly ever mentioned. I have always felt welcome safe and included as short, wide, queer, late 50s woman with injury restrictions. It's one of the only places where I can say things like 'l am a power lifter' and no one looks at me like I am nuts, or 'oh that's so cute she thinks she can lift things' or like I am some super role model. I am just an athlete like anyone else.

Solcana's pretty damn great. I've been going for years now, and their quality programming and coaches keep me going back. What distinguishes them from other "functional fitness" gyms?

1. Inclusivity and body/ability positivity - It doesn't matter your shape or ability level. Coaches will find a way for you to start or continue your fitness journey

2. Quality programming and coaching - I would routinely injure myself at my old gym. I juries are rare at Solcana because I'm taught how to do things the right way and programmed in a way that I don't hurt my back or strain my shoulder.

3. LGBTQ and BIPOC centered - Solcana does their best to be a welcoming community for all and centers people who are typically marginalized. As someone who is privileged enough to benefit from our society, I'm happy to support and join a gym as an ally to all marginalized people.

Hannah has built an amazing community, and I love it.

A truly special place. I can’t recommend Solcana enough. The coaches are phenomenal; caring, kind, and patient. They meet each member where they are at and encourage everyone. Modifications are always explained and there is great variety in the movements.

Never have I felt so lifted up and supported in my fitness journey. No matter what kind of a day I am having, or how crabby I am walking into the gym, I always feel 1000% better leaving. Thank you Solcana for taking me as I am, no questions asked. Also, whether you're incredibly competitive like me or you just want to do your own thing, all classes cater to everyone. It's like magic. I am constantly challenged. Unlike your average Crossfit gym, Solcana makes sure proper technique is always used, allowing me to lift heavier than I ever have before while being safe and injury-free.

I have searched for years to find a gym that is truly inclusive, but Solcana is that and so much more. Come as you are: inspired; fearful; fit as a fiddle; or a little broken and Solcana is there. Solcana is fun! Solcana focuses on moving bodies and finding the joy in that movement. I pass no fewer than 10 gyms on my way to Solcana, yet I do so happily because Solcana is where I belong. Now, before this gets too mushy, I want to mention that I’m lifting weights I never thought possible and even competing in powerlifting competitions, so you know, getting strong and working hard is also a thing at Solcana.

I can be in the worst mood, but as soon as I step foot in Solcana, I am immediately uplifted. This is a place where my mind, my body, and my spirit are well taken care of. I can be unapologetically myself at Solcana. The community is welcoming to everyone, regardless of where you are on your fitness journey. They are warm, they are loving, they will make you sweat and encourage you to do things (safely) that you never thought you could. I am so grateful to have Solcana in my life.

Joining Solcana has changed my life! I had never considered myself athletic and I always struggled to maintain a consistent fitness practice prior to joining Solcana. I had been working out at a the Y for about 6 months and was so intimidated by using the barbells, when someone recommended I check out Solcana. I joined the Empower class to have a safe, affirming space to learn how to use a barbell.

4 years later, I've never looked back! As a queer and trans person, having a gym that is explicitly trans-inclusive and body-positive has been a game changer. Working out and moving my body is now a steady part of my life that I don't even have to think about, and it brings my so much joy! I have discovered new passions, grown skills and strengths I'd never thought I'd even attempt, and gained friends and community along the way. I will forever be grateful for Solcana!

I was looking for a gym where I could build strength and confidence, but was super wary of "gym culture." Solcana is a great fit! Genuinely inclusive community, and not just for the extroverts. Challenging with plenty of supportive guidance. Definitely recommend!

I've visited Solcana on and off since 2020, first joining with the BIPOC EmPower program. Solcana's virtual programming definitely kept me afloat during the darkest days of the pandemic lockdown. I appreciate the familial vibe of the gym, Hannah (the owner) and the other coaches and managers at the gym are friendly and patient. Even though my attendance has been on and off over the years I always feel welcome. I have recommended the gym to friends, colleagues and would recommend to anyone to check it out.

I was an absolute beginner when I joined Solcana two years ago (and I was SUPER intimidated, having never joined a gym before). I'd been struggling with my energy levels and realized that any kind of lifestyle change involving movement/fitness routine wasn't going to happen for me without some kind of structure and support.

Solcana's coaching team offers support abound . . . they're extremely experienced yet humble and they're able to adapt movements to all ability levels which has helped me feel confident yet challenged along the way.

The Solcana community makes fitness a joyful act, which has helped me stay connected to the routine. I can't remember the last time I've felt this strong or energized mentally and physically.

Prior to going to Solcana in April 2017, I rarely worked out, and had absolutely no experience with strength training, gymnastics, or thinking about fitness goals. After starting at Solcana, I was deeply supported by the amazing coaching staff in learning various movements and engaging in activities and accomplishments that I had never done before. Additionally, Solcana was a space that was incredibly body-affirming, body-positive, and queer-affirming that allowed me to move in ways that both made sense for my body and embraced me for where I was in my fitness journey!

I’ve never been a β€œgym person”, but I’ve found my gym home at Solcana! This is not your typical cross-fit gym; it’s a place where people of all ability levels, ages, body types, backgrounds, and gender identities come together to work out in a community. The welcoming atmosphere and support keep me coming back three times a week, and I’m so proud of the skills and strength I’ve gained here. Thanks Solcana fam!

I took the January Em[power] series with Coach Neesh after being laid out pretty bad with COVID. I was still pretty physically fatigued & weak when I started the course and was kind of scared I'd have to drop out. I communicated these feelings to the folks at Solcana and they were super responsive and encouraged me to go at my own pace. The program really helped me regain my strength and athletic confidence in just six weeks! It was a game changer for my winter blues too. The gym has a fun and bright energy that welcomes all. I'm grateful to have Solcana in the community.

Gyms have never really been my thing, especially because of how uncomfortable they can feel as a fat and queer person. Solcana is a GAME CHANGER!

From the first time I spoke to Scout to inquire about services to my consultation with Garrett H. to now having been to classes and private trainer sessions - I feel so welcome, so comfortable, and so seen!

Garrett H. is an amazing personal trainer and takes the time to explain the "why" in addition to the "how" - as a lifetime learner and researcher by nature, I really appreciate this. KK coaches the Big Body Fitness classes (that's right, a class just for big bodies, yes!) and is equally amazing at leading the class and explaining movements as we learn them.

I have NEVER EVER been someone that would go around recommending a gym, but here I am. Give Solcana a try, you will not be disappointed! Especially if you are fat or just never felt comfortable in a gym setting, I can't recommend this place enough. And it's queer/women-owned, so - what more need I say?! Get yer booties to Solcana already.

I’ve been at solcana long enough to speak to a few points that anyone who is thinking of joining should know:

1. Bring yourself. Everyone is welcome and the community here shows that and there are no big egos here. If you are experienced and want to push it you can do that here as well.

2. Never be intimated by workouts (well most of the time πŸ˜‹) the coaches will help you adjust movements to your needs and make sure you are doing the movements will right form. If you want to progress to a more advanced movement they can do that as well.

3. They make the classes fun. The hour passes really quickly. Who can ever say that about most gym workouts.

If you are considering I highly recommend you contact the gym as you can do a limited trial at this time of writing with no strings attached.

Solcana is a great space, while any gym/box is intimidating (at least to me) it was friendly atmosphere. I scheduled an intro session and met with Jerik who was warm and attentive. We went through a quick workout after he explained a few of the types of classes they provide. When you start, Crossfit has a way of letting you know you're out of shape LOL. After our quick circuit and having a look around, I knew I'd want to join.
The gym is close to my home, the people are friendly and it's pricing is on par with other Crossfit boxes (i.e it's expensive lol). The thing that set it apart for me is their involvement with the LGBTQIA community. They provide classes geared towards their transitioning members as well as femme centric classes. They advocate in the crossfit community for their members as well. It's incredibly moving to me and while sure the membership may seem expensive, I'm so happy knowing my money goes towards such a good cause!
.
The day after my 8 minute butt kicking with Jerik, I signed up for my first actually crossfit session! I'm painfully awkward in new places so I got there and got my shoes on and wandered around wondering what to do with my hands. A few members trickled in and I sat across from Casey who is doing body adapt classes, a few people they knew came in and one of them showed us pictures of their friend's dog. Once 630 hit the crossfit crew gathered around Jerik and he explained the days warmup exercises. I had never kipped before so Jerik explained in very simple terms how to feel it in my shoulder blades. It'll take some practice but I got the hang of it sort of :) We went through the warmup and Marijke arrive shortly after. She was our session's coach she was just late due to snow and public transport issues so Jerik started us off. She helped me with my cleans or jerks or whatever they're called since I've never done those and had no idea where to start. She told me to keep my knees high on the t2b portion (i could only do knees up not toes to bar) The session was fierce and naturally I was the slowest lol.
.
The classmates were great though. All wonderfully diverse. Between heavy breathing there were some jokes and some talk back and forth with various people. You bond in the pain and suffering it seems lol.
.
I don't know how I feel about the competitive nature of crossfit, the point system and the trying to get through things quickly. I'm def not trying to cut corners or sacrifice form for speed. That's easy to do when you start getting exhausted. I've worked out a lot (many years ago lulz) and listen to my body well and also correct myself the best I can when I am starting to arch my back or not squat deep enough(those things your body tries to do when you're tired). Maybe I'll always be the last to finish a circuit but I'll be happy to get that work in and done right :)
.
Overall it was a fantastic experience. My legs are sore today but it's not stopping me from doing one more session today before I take a few days to recover. Looking forward to the next session!

Joining Solcana is literally (really, literally) the best decision I've made for myself in year). It's not just where I work out; it's my home.

Lifting weights in the most affirming fitness space in the world has fundamentally changed my relationship to my body. I want to tell everybody about my yearlong journey to a 115lb bench press and a 115lb push press (I started at 55lb and 30lbs and string bean arms), my 10 pushups, my 10k. NOT about the weight I've lost. Because of Solcana's mission (which is more than just words), I'm truly on a journey of celebrating how my body moves and what it can do.

What does this mean in a greater sense? It means that I've found a way to silence the negative narratives I constantly tell myself about my body: that I need to be smaller to be loved, to be valued, to be seen as hardworking. At Solcana, I revel in what my body can do and the amazing change in what that body feels like with all of these new muscles and abilities. I'm smaller in certain ways by default but I'm also allowing myself to be bigger, too, as I gain strength. And becoming bigger and taking up more physical space is something that has disrupted this ubiquitous sexist narrative that plagues so many women.

While I could have gone through the workouts anywhere, I don't think I would have so intensively worked through these toxic narratives without the most body positive, feminist, inclusive space that is Solcana.

And you know what? A year later, I make it to the gym 4 times a week after 10 years of failed fitness plans. And, 90% of the time, I enjoy it,

For all of you looking for a fitness home, I cannot recommend this place enough. It's worth every penny - which means a lot coming from me since I was so price resistant. I work in a nonprofit and I am still willing to make budget sacrifices to fit this place into my life because it has brought immense joy into my life daily.

I never thought crossfit would be useful for a runner. I use to have a very negative image of what crossfit was, and thus was very hesitant to try it. My friend/coworker brought me in to meet with the owner/head coach, Hannah, about 9 months ago. I told Hannah my goals for running and marathon training. She listened, gave feedback, and made me feel extremely validated and hopeful! I was not even considering myself a competitive runner nor had any aspirations of qualifying for Boston's marathon (I was about 35 minutes too slow at that time). I have been going to Solcana for approximately 8 months now. Throughout that time, I PR'd my 10 mile race by 8 minutes, PR'd my half marathon race by 13 minutes, and most recently PR'd my marathon race by 19 minutes! The only thing I changed in training was adding crossfit; most specifically Solcana Crossfit.

The coaches are absolutely incredible, and get to know each of the member's goals and give assistance on how to reach them. My goals looked much different than that of my peers, and the coaches were able to assist me in tailoring workouts so that I could get my "fast feet" going. I even had an injury during the marathon training and was extremely discouraged. The coaches helped me maintain my motivation, each showing me various ways to improve and work with the injury, incorporating rest with workouts that wouldn't stress the injury. I was able to get cardio workouts in without needing to run! I don't think I could have stuck out the training after the injury if it hadn't been for Hannah's coaching, encouraging, and belief in me. The Solcana community is also beyond anything I could have asked for. Each member is excited for each success of their peers, no matter how large or small. I have not experienced anything like this. Members were concerned for me when I was injured, rejoiced with me when I finished races, and encouraged me throughout each workout.

8 months ago, Boston's marathon was not even in my mind. Now I have a goal that by the end of 2016, I will be a Boston qualifier. I know that with the assistance of Solcana, the coaches and community, I can accomplish this goal. I highly recommend!!

The programming at Solcana is thoughtful and conscientious, the coaches are supportive, knowledgeable, and humble, and the community is diverse and friendly. This is not at all the hard core type atmosphere some people associate with CrossFit. It is very welcoming to folks who are new to CrossFit and to fitness in general. At the same time, the programming supports the serious athlete as well. The vibe is very female-positive, and there is an intentional effort to welcome trans* folks as well. I'm also really proud to be associated with a gym that is so involved in the local community.
