lol, don't get me started. worst ymca ever! locker rooms circa 1950. metal lockers rusted, dented. lighting is "dismal". no HVAC flow down there, so feels, smells suffocating. lol, get me outa here asap. arrogant maintenance staff disrespectfully mops over your feet while using the tread mills, accident waiting to happen. also, they leave their large yellow industrial buckets filled w dirty smelly water in and around the equipment. groups of wild children (5-10y) jumping, hanging on the equipment like a jungle gym, with NO employee supervision at all. all three non-maintained floor bikes are regularly taken, so always a struggle to cycle. mngr refuses to allow patrons to use the spinning room bikes which sit idle/unused.
only plus is Ally at the front desk whom is helpful and friendly, and Hunter is the best professional grade trainer. will be leaving at the New Year.

I used to love it here but just can't anymore.....
* Some members have +10 people on their "family" memberships
* Violence (past shooting) and safety is a real issue
* Very limited hours
* Kids play around in the free weight area
* Guests don't pick-up after themselves, especially free weights
* Summer camp staff canβt answer simple questions
* Couple building code violations (see pictures)

Subject: Formal Complaint β Disrespectful and Racist Conduct by a Lifeguard
Dear YMCA Management,
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a lifeguardβs unacceptable and discriminatory behavior during my recent visit. My friend and I were swimming when the lifeguard began calling us liars and speaking to us in a rude and aggressive manner. His actions and words appeared to be racially motivated, as he targeted us for being Asian.
He also threatened to remove us from the facility simply because we were diving β a normal part of swimming. What made the situation worse was that he was talking about us behind our backs instead of addressing us directly. His behavior made us feel disrespected, targeted, and unsafe in an environment that is supposed to be welcoming to all members.
We pay over $120 for our membership and expect to be treated with respect and fairness, not hostility or prejudice. This lifeguardβs behavior does not reflect the YMCAβs values of inclusion and respect. I strongly urge management to investigate this incident immediately and take the necessary disciplinary action, including termination if appropriate.
No staff member should ever discriminate or mistreat paying members. I expect a written response regarding the steps that will be taken to address this issue.

Absolutely UNIMPRESSED with their unwillingness to take responsibility for their website's glitches. Fix your website and consider flexibility with your policies when you are at fault!!
My child has attended the Summer Power Program for the last 3 summers mainly due to our differing work schedules, their long hours of operation, decent pricing, and the frequent outings they offer.
That being said I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with their new online website and their refusal to reverse a charge that I hadn't received confirmation for, due to a glitch in their new website. All things considered we will not be signing her up in the future and do not recommend it to others due to the complicated and glitchy website and the customer service response to their website's issue.
Their online system for registering for their program has not been great in the past especially as a mobile site. They updated their online site this year and it has still been an awkward user experience and glitchy. When registering there is not an option to select an entire week at a time, there are MWF or TTH options which makes it overly time consuming and detailed to select all the dates needed. After selecting and registering my child for all the known dates I needed, I double checked her other activity dates and returned to the YMCA site to add additional dates needed in August, it wouldn't let me without charging me another $50 registration fee, although she was already a registered participant. I revisted adding more dates closer to summer and was then waitlisted.
I received an email on a busy workday in early July that a TTH spot was available in August but that I had only 24hrs to claim it and needed to confirm via the link provided. I attempted multiple times on my short break to accept it via the link, but it would not process my request, I tried the desktop site as well as the mobile site. It was also asking again for a $50 registration fee although she was already an active participant. I gave up trying as 24hrs is not much time to try and get ahold of customer or technical support, considering my packed work days and we made other arrangements. I thought that would be the end of it and didn't bother emailing them since it hadn't processed and we made other arrangements. On a Tuesday at the beginning of August I happened to look at my credit card statement and noticed a $145 charge the day before for the YMCA although I had already been charged for all her dates she would be attending (they charge 2 weeks in advance on mondays, previously it was a week in advance). Very confused I emailed the customer service that day to let them know she did not need care those dates, they thanked me in response. A week later I still noticed the charge and sent them a brief email asking about a refund. They were unwilling to give a refund due to their 2 week advance cancellation notice where you must let them know by Monday 2 weeks in advance. I understand their policy but given the glitches with their new system and that I never received a confirmation message or email confirming the registration had indeed gone through, I emailed them with the complete explanation that the problem had been on their end and that I should receive a refund since it was their issue and I had not been notified. They took a few days to review it and have a supervisor review it and still did not approve it due to their 2 week cancellation policy.
Your issue YMCA, not mine.

Davontae showed me how to use the egym machines. What a delight he is. Beaming with positivity!
And Hunter showed me how to get started on the e-gym.
The facility itself is amazing - with two pools, and an over 18 locker room.
Only thing Iβm not thrilled about is the communal showers in 18+ locker room. Iβm not an exhibitionist, never have been, never will be, (other than here I guess π)

I would not recommend using any child care release days as staff are not caring for the children. Staff are on the phones and backs on the children without interacting or supervising them. I also made the mistake of not βscreenshotβ when I cancelled for the release date therefore unable to get a refund.

I will never attend this place again. Im on a fixed income and was told I could pay every two weeks without automatic withdrawal. From my account. They insisted on my banking info but told me they would not take any money out. I attended 2 times, and then I was forced to move out of town. 2 months later I notice I was overdrawn at the bank. They were removing payments from my account even though the assured me it would never happen. Then when I called to complain to try to obtain my money back, I was told someone would contact me. I since have left several calls after I tracked down who does the billing. That was $75 of services I never used. For a place the promotes help people with low income sure had no problem taking my money then not even trying or wanting to fix there issue.. Be very careful, there are many people who work at the front desk, so good luck trying to track down who made the error and gave incorrect info. I will never go back or recommend this place.

UPDATED TO ADD I DID TALK TO KENDRA MANY TIMES AND THERE WAS NEVER IMPROVEMENTS MADE DESPITE HER LACK OF ABILITY AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD HIRE MORE PEOPLE AND RELY LESS ON VOLUNTEERS TO COACH SPORTS PEOPLE PAY FOR (especially if they involve water sports):
Not organized in their kids sports programs. They need to do better and hire more qualified people to oversee all the kids they have running the place and maybe we would consider going back but I have have had bad experiences every single time from 2011 to 2024...we stopped for a long time in between and gave them space to improve but there was a definite lack of improvement or attempts at such. There are much better establishments and this is one that could use an update in many many ways.

I have been taking my kids here for two years and today was the only day I came in with them and I had such a bad experience. a lifeguard named eric from the pool mentally abused my 14 year old niece right in front of me. And when I stood up for my niece he threatened me and said he can cancel my membership and make sure no ymca would take us again. And he was also mocking our accent and when my niece started crying he said βthatβs all you can do, hahaha I made her cry boohooβ. After we left to report him my other daughter witnessed him talking about my 14 year old niece to other ymca members. He caused us to leave the pool because we were being mentally harassed, he ruined our whole mood. I pay a membership to come here and enjoy my time, but today my 14 year old niece and I got mentally harassed. And we also saw him yelling at other kids. And we told the front desks and they said he always does this and everyone basically complains about him, why does he still have this job? YMCA is supposed a safe community for different people, culture, religion, and POCS but this guy is only nice to the white people, but was yelling at the POCS, especially kids. I hope you guys do something about this, thank you.

Bad service, and really bad information at the front desk, I got my subscription 3 days ago and I still canβt get in the pool, because I have to make a reservation but I think that it will be like that all year and I will never be able to get in the pool and at the front desk they said they did not have enough life guards, so why do they have the pool open? and at this point I am going to cancel my subscription and I am going to go to LA fitness. bad service.

The Front Desk Staff at the YMCA here are amazing, kind and helpful. Many different questions are asked and they always try to help. I used to work there, I was the white woman Ms. Malam is referring to. I remember clearly the interaction because I spoke to her first and stated that there were no sales people here and itβs against policy to let non-members into the facility. I repeated it several times that I was sorry but there are no sales people here. Josh (well-respected, well-liked, long-term employee, helps everyone that he can) backed me as I was observing that she would not accept my answer. And he did. Calmly, informatively and clearly. Ms. Malam returned to express more displeasure especially at Josh. I said he was just informing you. And she again left. Iβm sure it was frustrating to sign up then not get in (technology has its limitations) it was clear that was the expectation to use the facility (even if you donβt have a membership?) We did our best as everyone always does there. Some days youβre tired some days not. But the intention is always there to be of service.

Clean, modern looking facility with friendly staff and quite a few different fitness spaces. Quite a bit of cardio equipment as well as egym strength which is cool. I do wish they more racks and overall free weight options - maybe add some Hammer Strength racks and plate loaded equipment. Overall the facility was not overcrowded at 6am when I worked out. Good variety of exercisers young and old. Would definitely recommended to a friend

I went to this YMCA on a guest pass, just to see if it was worth switching from planet fitness. You would think the YMCA in Edina, next to the galleria, would be nicer than any other Ymca in Minnesota. Couldn't be more wrong. All of the exercise equipment (besides there new E-gym machines) are all over 20 years old. The space is small so you are literally working out inches from the person next to you. I would suggest a total demolishing of the building. With a new YMCA at the same location.

I wanna talk about Karl Wilbur The Engagement Director, Iβve been trying to setup a meeting with him this whole month. But apparently this man doesnβt seem to be at his desk ALL MONTH. The ymca says heβs the only person I can reach to talk about my situation but it seems that this guys is an imaginary person. Heβs never at his office and he never answers his calls. So I am wondering why he holds this position as the engagement director. The YMCA needs to do better.

This has got to be the trashiest YMCA I have ever been to. Every single thing inside the building screams "renovate me". Lockers are old rusty and tiny! Then lay out of the building is a maze. Steam room fits three people only. Whirlpool is so tiny. It could fit four people max. There are no curtains in the shower rooms so you get to see everybody's privates either you want or you don't want to. Absolutely horrible.

Absolutely love this Y! I've never been a YMCA member before, so I'm new to the whole organization. My husband and I joined because we needed a gym and the Lifetime down the street is on an 1000 person waitlist. What? To our surprise, we absolutely love the Y! It's busy but never overcrowded, the equipment is awesome, the staff are all lovely, there is natural light from huge windows everywhere. I'm obsessed with the fitness classes and their instructors (body pump and yoga flow are my usual). They have classes all day and you can just walk in anytime, no need to sign up. Diverse mix of people, ages, and fitness levels in every class, so I never feel out of place. The hot tub and steam are great (the steam is almost too hot, I can only stay in it for five minutes). The women in the daycare are super sweet and because it isn't overcrowded, our daughter (8 months old) gets one-on-one care! I'm a total super fan.

After reading reviews on google about this Y, I have been overwhelmingly impressed. The gym is clean, large, plenty of lockers. There are several stations with sanitizing wipes available and I have yet to we one empty. Given that the price is comparable to other gyms in Edina and actually cheaper if your insurance or employer gives a credit for going x times per month, itβs a great deal. I only utilize the cardio machines and weights, but if you are into other means of exercise such as classes, racquet (?sp) ball, swimming, etc. there is even more for you here. No too βbro-yβ either, if that makes sense. All experience levels fit in here.

YMCA works with you. Example:
They let me pause my gym membership during covid and come back with no fee. I doubt you'd find a more chill gym. They even have a discount for people who can't afford the membership. Worth taking a look even if you think the fee is to high to pay each month.

Staff is great, family locker rooms are cold, clammy and kinda gross. Women's locker rooms aren't much better.
Edit: women's locker rooms, specifically the showers have gotten BAD. I still work out here. The staff is still super friendly. My kid loves Kids Stuff, but I have to rearrange my day to accommodate going home for a shower. Apart from wiping mirrors and counters with paper towel and a quick hosing of the shower floor, the locker rooms are not being taken care of.

Love the Southdale Y! Staff is helpful and has all the weights and equipment I need for my workouts. I have been going there about 4 days a week for about the last 5 years. The best feature is the steam sauna!
