Everyone here is very supportive of one another and wants you to succeed. It’s a no frills gym with all the equipment you need to build strength and balance. As a 67 year old woman who has only been doing strength training for a year, it’s the perfect fit for me. I never feel out of place.

I didn’t know how badly I needed to be weight training until, at my daughter’s urging, I started working out at Brentwood Barbell. With their program and excellent coaching I am now in a much better place physically. My strength and endurance have greatly improved. As a bonus, I have met some really amazing (and strong) people. It is a great place to workout. I think others have said this before but it’s worth repeating—Brentwood Barbell is a community. I’m happy I’m there.

This is definitely a 5 star gym! I started at Brentwood Barbell about 6 months ago. Not only am I stronger than I was but I am now more confident in any gym setting. The trainers are so helpful and informative. They never make you feel uncomfortable to ask a question. I have recommended this gym to friends already and would highly recommend to anyone who asks. Thanks Brentwood Barbell!

One Year at Brentwood Barbell: A Journey of Incredible Growth

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last week marked my one-year anniversary and 150th workout at Brentwood Barbell, and I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing community and the incredible progress I've made.

When I first walked through the doors, I was intimidated and uncertain about my abilities. Fast forward 365 days, and I've experienced transformation that I never thought possible. My squat has increased by over 770%, my bench press has grown by more than 250%, my overhead press has improved by over 200%, and my deadlift has increased by over 260%. These numbers represent far more than just strength gains – they represent a complete transformation in confidence, discipline, and overall well-being.

Alex, my trainer, deserves enormous credit for guiding me through this journey. His expertise, patience, and encouragement have been instrumental in helping me reach milestones I never imagined. But Alex is just one example of the exceptional coaching staff at Brentwood Barbell. Every trainer here brings the same level of dedication and personalized attention to their members.

What truly sets Brentwood Barbell apart is how the coaches adapt every single program to the individual. Whether someone is dealing with an injury, has specific mobility concerns, or simply needs modifications based on their experience level, the trainers here create custom-designed programs that meet each member exactly where they are. I've watched them work with people of all ages and skill levels – from complete beginners to seasoned athletes – and every person receives the same thoughtful, individualized approach.

The community at Brentwood Barbell is unlike anywhere I've ever trained. It's a place where a 70-year-old working on mobility exercises gets the same respect and encouragement as someone deadlifting 400+ pounds. Everyone supports each other, celebrates victories together, and creates an environment where growth feels not just possible, but inevitable.

The gym has become more than just a place I work out – it's become a cornerstone of my life. The physical transformation has been remarkable, but the mental and emotional growth has been equally profound. I've learned that consistency beats perfection, that progress isn't always linear, and that having the right support system makes all the difference.

To Alex and all the trainers at Brentwood Barbell: thank you for believing in me, pushing me when I needed it, and creating a space where transformation happens daily. Here's to many more years of growth, community, and crushing goals together.

If you're looking for a gym that will meet you where you are and help you become who you want to be, Brentwood Barbell is the place. Trust me – your future self will thank you.

I’ve been training at Brentwood Barbell for several months now, and I can’t say enough good things about the coaching and support I’ve received. The team—Alex, Lori, and James—truly know their stuff. They consistently give me feedback on my form, which has helped me stay safe and injury-free while lifting. That kind of attention to detail is rare and something I really value.

I lift three days a week and run three days a week, and while I consider myself more of an endurance athlete, the coaches at Brentwood Barbell have been incredibly supportive of that balance. They’ve tailored my lifting program to complement my running, and it’s made a big difference in both my strength and performance on the road.

If you’re looking for knowledgeable coaches who listen, adapt, and truly care about helping you meet your goals—whether you’re a runner, lifter, or just getting started—this is the place.

I have only been going to this gym for about 5 months and I am thoroughly impressed. The training is doable, the method of progressive overload feels safe and approachable for someone like me who has never used a barbell before. The coaches are incredibly supportive and inspiring. Whether it's quickly forming a new plan to heal an injury, a tip to better grip the bar when it gets heavy or just geek out over fitness. My back pain is gone, my core strength is back, and I'm able to keep up with my 3 young kids. Lastly, there's good vibes. For this introvert, it's a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere that I look forward to each week. Thanks BB! Keep up the good work!

This gym is fantastic! James is a former physical therapist so, focusing on form and movement is woven into the strength program. Alex is a great coach I'vw worked with a ton one on one. He approaches strength training with a lot of experience as well as education. Lori has taken permanent residence in my head each time I do deadlifts and Jason is a relaxed, encouraging, professional, and competent coach. I love the results I've achieved with their help and I look forward to further future achievements with the new powerbuilding plan Alex has me on right now.

This gym is awesome. I came in after finishing physical therapy for an injury. My coaches worked with me to tailor the exercises and my program to fit me and where I was at. I'm objectively stronger than I've ever been and know I still have growth ahead of me.

The individual programming takes into account your goals and availability, and the group classes are a great way to get guidance from coaches and meet cool people. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend!

I just wrapped up my first 90 days and I couldn't be happier with my experience so far here. The facility, the coaches, the workouts, and the people. I just moved here and getting back into lifting, I needed community and accountability, this was the perfect fit for me. I am extremely thankful for stumbling upon this little gem in STL!

If you're nervous about getting in the gym because of the lack of knowledge, judgement, or overcrowded gyms, look no further this is the gym for you. Whether you're an Olympic lifter or just starting out, you'll find what you need here for a great workout and wonderful environment.

I hope this helped and I hope to see you there!

I joined Brentwood Barbell about three months ago, and the entire experience has exceeded my expectations. I was eager to get back into weight training but felt nervous about maintaining proper form and not injuring myself. The trainers at Brentwood Barbell are wonderful—so knowledgeable, helpful, and welcoming. With their guidance and having my own plan, my confidence grows with every session.

What sets this gym apart is its thoughtful approach. The trainers meet you where you are, ensuring you build a solid foundation before progressing. The setup is the perfect blend of personalization and community: tailored to your individual goals while fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

I love the balance of accountability and encouragement. Walking into the gym knowing exactly what I need to do is the best, and it’s been amazing for both my physical and mental health. I’d recommend Brentwood Barbell to any family member or friend without hesitation!

Absolutely love this gym! From the moment I joined, I’ve been blown away by the level of personal attention and support. The training is top-notch, with knowledgeable trainers who truly care about your goals and tailor workouts to your specific needs. They push you to challenge yourself while always keeping things safe and effective.

I also appreciate the quarterly meetings, which really set this gym apart. These check-ins give me the chance to discuss my progress, reassess my goals, and get expert feedback on how I can continue improving. It’s such a great way to stay on track and motivated.

But the best part? The community. Everyone here shares a common goal of being the best version of themselves, which creates such a positive, motivating atmosphere. I always look forward to my sessions, and can't recommend Brentwood Barbell enough.

I have never encountered so much knowledge and expertise surrounding fitness compressed into a single place. I have lifted off and on for years. I was a competitive swimmer from the time I was 8 all through college. I worked with strength coaches all through high school and college. When I decided I wanted to take my growing passion for BJJ more seriously, I knew I needed to get stronger but there was simply too much information online for me to sift through. I wanted a coach and guidance. After meeting with James, I was sold. He set me up with Alex, a massive viking with a heart to match, and we got right to work. Alex brings a perfect blend of instruction, motivation, and superb programming, which is what I was really looking for. While I meet with Alex once a week, there is always one of the other coaches present. Both Lori and Jason have been there numerous time to tweak my form. I love that I know I always have someone there to watch and help when I should need it. After a few months of training with Alex, I had my first competition. When competing in my weight class, I felt like I was competing with people 50lbs lighter than me. BJJ is supposed to be about technique, but I feel a massive strength difference which led me to winning all of my matches by submission. Whether you are an athlete looking for a competitive edge or simply looking to discover how amazing your body can be, trust that Brentwood Barbell will take you as far as you are willing to go.

BONUS: We have a gym dog, Evangelique, and she is the densest little bundle of joy I have ever met

Alex did an excellent job in my Foundations classes. He patiently demonstrated and taught proper technique for use of all equipment. He also did a great job of explaining the logic behind gradually increase weights within 60-70% of maximum. I’m looking forward to seeing my growth during the next 90 days.

We’ve been training with Alex for a little over a month now, and have looked forward to every session! The gym itself - and everyone we’ve met-has been so incredibly down to earth and welcoming, just really easy and super cool. The whole experience, from our first consult to each session has been fun, it’s been deliberate and it’s been focused on our individual goals - no nonsense every step of the way. We’re excited to add more sessions in order to get even more out of our training. And as someone who’s experienced with training, both in and out of gyms and with and without personal trainers, if you’re looking for personalized programming, either as an individual or in a group setting, whether you’re a seasoned gym goer or brand new, I recommend Brentwood Barbell 100%. And I would especially recommend it for anyone brand new to training, this is where you want to start, this is where you can be consistent, comfortable, purposeful and make great progress.

When I started at Brentwood Barbell two years ago, I was skeptical about the level of training and the personalization that they said was offered.

After two years, everything that was said in the initial meeting is true. All of the coaches are invested in your training and will consistently check in during your workout. They will gladly adjust your routine based on your needs, whether it’s for a day or longer. They celebrate your PR’s and help you plan the next step to hit your goals. Brentwood Barbell is 100% the best gym I have ever been to and I will forever be grateful for them.

Super plus - they have gym dogs!

Brentwood Barbell is a great gym and truly a unique place to train. They are the perfect blend of personalized strength programming AND coaching…all in a community class setting. All the coaches I have worked with have been professional, personable, motivating and fun! I’ve trained at several different gyms over the years, and in my experience, BB’s coaching on form and attention to detail is next level! They have helped me improve my strength at an accelerated rate. After starting my training at BB, I experienced a reoccurring knee injury, and within 3 weeks they worked me through it. (Also helping me achieve new personal gains!) I highly recommend Brentwood Barbell for anyone at any level!

I cannot begin to describe how much I love this gym and the trainers. I came in after 3 knee surgeries and couldn’t squat more than 60 lbs by 10 months I was squatting 260 lbs! My knees hurt so much less and when they do the trainers adjust my workouts to ensure that I don’t hurt them further. I truly feel so much better and stronger. I’ve never been so consistent with a gym before and the trainers and the other fellow gym members are so encouraging. This place is worth every penny!! I also did the nutrition with Lori and lost 15lbs in 3 months which is the most I’ve lost in several years!! 100/10 for this gym!

A Transformative Journey with Brentwood Barbell:

Introduction: After decades of strength training with modest results, my fitness journey took a remarkable turn when my son-in-law, a BB coaching alumni, started guiding me to impressive gains while training at home. Then after the worst of COVID I decided to train in-person at BB and my results and passion for training were propelled to new levels. The gym's exceptional coaching, top-notch facility, and supportive community make every session something I look forward to.
Effectiveness of Training: BB's coaches have outstanding knowledge in proven training methods and continuously seek ways to enhance their programming. In the group class format coaches observe form and progress, offer constructive feedback without being overbearing, and gladly answer any questions. With inspiration drawn from 'the strongest gym in the world,' Westside Barbell, as well as other cutting-edge principles, BB strives to make every training session a step toward greater strength and accomplishment. In short, you'll never need to worry that you're wasting your time with ineffective training methods.
Facility: BB has a spacious, clean, and well-organized facility with a wide variety of quality equipment. One of my favorite features is the turf track, for exercises like sled pushes and drags, walking lunges, keg carries, and more. The abundance of equipment means there are rarely wait times for essential exercises, and on warmer days, the big garage doors are opened, enhancing the training experience.
Health and Safety: BB prioritizes its athletes' well-being, recognizing that strength training is a gateway to improved health, appearance, and self-confidence. The coaches are not only knowledgeable in keeping us safe during workouts but also adept at addressing any aches or pains that arise. With a licensed physical therapist among them, they have the expertise to deal with discomfort, enabling us to keep training to achieve our goals while minimizing or eliminating pain. Coach Alex masterfully helped me overcome back pain just before my first meet, making possible a successful and enjoyable competition day. Coaches Lori, Jason, and James (owner & licensed PT) are also highly capable and a pleasure to work with.
The Community: BB's community is a diverse and welcoming mix of people, each pursuing their unique training objectives. While some participate in powerlifting or strongman competitions, most are there for personal growth and physical fitness. Respect and friendliness is the norm, creating an atmosphere that makes training enjoyable.
Nutrition and Body Composition Resources: Recognizing the role of nutrition in achieving our fitness ambitions, the coaches at BB offer sound advice tailored to our specific goals. Their expertise helps us make informed choices and optimize nutrition for maximum results. Also, they just added an InBody body scanning system, a tool for tracking our body composition progress so training and nutrition can be tailored accordingly.
Conclusion: My experience at Brentwood Barbell has been nothing short of transformative. In addition to my hard work and consistency, I also owe my surprising progress to the gym's dedicated coaches, well-equipped facility, and supportive community. For anyone seeking effective, enjoyable, and results-driven strength training, BB is an excellent choice and is unique in the St. Louis region. Don't hesitate to check out this outstanding gym where your fitness journey and strength can reach new heights as long as you're willing to put in consistent effort and get the needed nutrition.
Finally, to see the transformation possible with the help of BB, take a look at my 'before and after' photos below, which are around five years apart.

I love Brentwood Barbell! The coaches are wonderful and the owner is a great guy. They are all truly invested in your fitness/strength training journey. I've never really cared for any gym memberships I've had in the past, but here I feel part of a community.

After hitting 40 my Dr. suggested incorporating more resistance/ strength training into my routine to help keep the weight off and keep from losing muscle mass. I started with some bodyweight training in my basement but would find stretches of time where I just wasn't motivated, so lots of starts and stops.

In comes Brentwood Barbell. Instead of purchasing a full set of weights or a bowflex all in one type machine, I decided to give the local gym a look.

My first impression was hesitancy, I didnt see all the fancy new machines or rows of treadmills and exercise bikes that I was accustomed to. Instead there were rows of squat racks (which I've always found intimidating at the other gyms, usually crowded by the stereotypical gym bro). Before starting however I had a one on one with Alex and we talked through my fitness goals. Then over the course of the first week he led me through the core barbell lifts, ensuring I had a foundational grasp of the lifts (squat/bench/deadlift/overhead
press) and form and my hesitancy faded.

Fast forward 5 months and I can honestly say I look forward to every training session. I'm stronger now than I was in my 20s/30s and have continued making gains month after month. The coaches continue to guide me with meaningful feedback and program adjustments. Additionally, the other members are always pleasant to talk to during sessions and are comfortable to be around; mainly just regular people of all ages doing their best to get/stay strong.

Last but not least, the owner, James, is regularly at the gym and always a pleasure to talk to. Whether it be picking his brain for his vast knowledge when it comes to physical fitness and training or if we wander into discussions about the community (he's a Brentwood local) my impression is always the same: he's a great person looking to strengthen his clients and his community. Brentwood is lucky to have him and his business.

I signed up because I wanted a safe space to get stronger.

First and foremost, I can’t stress enough how supportive and welcoming Brentwood Barbell is. Coming from a very crowded chain gym, the environment was a priority for me. Considering the social environment: all of the coaches and members are always so approachable and supportive, yet will give you the space you need to get your workout in—no microaggressions, no catcalls/pickup lines, no pressure to interact with, do things, or buy things from anyone, and definitely no unsolicited advice. The coaches are knowledgeable and always available to form-check, spot, answer questions, provide modifications as needed, and just check in. You might make a friend or two among the members, but that’s just because they’re cool.

My other priority was the physical environment, ie: squat racks, weights, and space. Brentwood Barbell has it. Even during their busiest hours, the things I need I’ve been able to use. Forget about the gyms that have only two squat racks, the people who spread out and take up half the gym, and the groups of people who occupy a coveted piece of equipment for two hours—none of these things happen here.

Lastly, I was looking for some solid and consistent guidance. Before Brentwood Barbell, I tried piecing together workouts based on whatever information I was able to absorb from other lifters/books/the internet, and buying programs; eventually, I felt like I had plateaued. The more I tried to manage my fatigue, incorporate just enough variation, and figure out intensity and frequency, the more confused and frustrated I got. The coaches at Brentwood Barbell consider my goals, listen to me, and scale my goals so they’re achievable! Not only that, they given me the tools I need to customize my program (without having to write myself a new program every cycle) and really take ownership of what I’m doing. While I’ve come to terms with myself that I’ll always want to be stronger, I can say (with evidence!) that I’ve never been stronger than I am now. Brentwood Barbell has provided me with the supports I needed to take safe risks, push myself, and forgive myself for when life gets in the way. Hands down, Brentwood Barbell is the best gym.

Genuinely fantastic experience. I’ve been going to this gym since January, and I’ve already made huge progress in all of my goals. They offer a tailored weightlifting program/diet plan to address pretty much any fitness goal you can have - getting stronger, losing weight, better joints, etc. The coaches are all super knowledgeable and friendly, and the owner, James, is an incredible resource for not only Hot Lifting Tips but also the detailed mechanical and scientific processes that go into each exercise. It’s a great thing to walk into a gym, point at a specific movement, and go “So what’s THIS doing for me?” and get a complete, scientific, and practical answer. Not to mention, the community’s fantastic and the range of people attending goes from older men and women all the way down to high schoolers. There’s something for everybody, and I’ve literally had nothing but positive experiences here. For the amount and quality of time I spend here, the monthly rate is a bargain.

Trust me when I say I have been around the workout block. I have tried many types of workouts at many gyms, but it wasn’t until a good friend called me up & told me that I needed to give this one a try, that I’d seen anything like it. Three & a half years later, I’m still a member.

Immediately, I knew this gym & approach to fitness was different. I was seen as an individual with unique goals & needs. I was coached based on how my body moves. I was given customized programming to meet those goals. I felt heard.

To say the community & coaches at this gym are special is an understatement. Brentwood Barbell is the best gym I’ve been a part of, bar none.

I never imagined at age 74+ I would have been weight training at Brentwood Barbell ever since they opened and having so much fun. Squats, dead lifts, presses, these words were not in my exercise vocabulary. Having had a back injury in my 50's and diagnosed with osteopina in my 60's I can truly say that Brentwood Barbell has enabled me to regain strength and improved my bone density scans!! The combination of James Harris, PT and coach along with his staff makes this a safe and welcoming place to work out. Try it, you will like it, even if squats, lifts and presses are not currently in your exercise vocabulary.

I came to James and the team with lower back pain and having exhausted many other options. One of my goals in life is to participate in the centenarian olympics (lift two bags of groceries up a flight of stairs at age 100). At the rate I was going, I didn’t know if I would make it to 70.

6 months in of consistency and hard work, the pain was mostly eradicated and now, after two years I’m stronger, more flexible, and more aware of my body than I have ever been. I know I’m setting up a foundation for a life of fitness at Brentwood Barbell and I get to do so with a small community of hard-working individuals of all ages.
