Carondelet Park Rec Complex is an awesome facility! The equipment is in great shape, the pool is always clean, and the staff makes everyone feel welcome. Thereβs a nice mix of programs β fitness classes, open gym, swimming, and even community events. You can tell they really care about keeping the place in top shape and creating a positive environment for everyone. Highly recommend checking it out if youβre in the area!

Beautiful location. Wonderful park just outside. Building is large and offers a big variety of fitness options for all levels. Equipment is well maintained and the facility is kept clean. The staff are all friendly and polite. Classes vary from beginners to more established and options for seniors also available. Lots of natural lighting make it a nice space to work out in.

TL;DR - filthy, disgusting, algae-infested pool. Don't waste your money. And don't bother with asking management to address concerns, because they'll just sit around and do nothing.
This only is to rate the outdoor aquatic center. I like to swim laps for exercise/cardio and try to get in 2000 yds per swim M-F. This is impossible to do in the outdoor pool lap lanes for several reasons:
1) RULES are not followed nor enforced by the lifeguards of staff. Cannot tell you the number of times children or other swimmers just pop into a lane disrupting a swim. And, the lifeguards most of the time will address it, but other times they just sit there vacuously staring off empty. Pool etiquette is posted but seems to be a part of the aesthetic and not requisite to follow.
2) LIFEGUARDS same as above. You, lifeguards, need to strictly enforce rules. They're there to prevent accidents. You should have been taught this in your training. For the couple months this summer season I swam laps, on different occasions I noticed one lifeguard was sleeping in her chair, some were on their phones, others just chatting and not paying attention. If you have time to chat, you have time to clean the pool. That leads me to my next point:
3) CLEANLINESS This is one of the filthiest pools I've ever been to. In fact, I'm surprised it wasn't closed down due to it not being vacuumed routinely over the course of ~3 months. On August 18th I stopped in hoping to get in my routine. The lap lanes were green with algae and people had scribbled marks into it in the deep end. Further, all season I asked many times several staff when they planned to vacuum the pool. Answers were: "we don't do that", "they (lifeguards) are supposed to", "we will", "we did just yesterday" [they most certainly did not], or "we will this evening", "all of the rain is causing it [to get dirty]". If you don't know how, hire a damn crew or get a robovac and throw it in overnight. How hard can it be? Furthermost, swimming laps I noticed sanitary products at the bottom, candy wrappers, millions of dead ants, goggles, napkins, candies, wrist bands, synthetic hair/eyelashes, and you name it. One is better off swimming in a stagnant lake infested with Naegleria fowleri than going to Carondelet Park Y's outdoor aquatic center.
Oh and let's not forget the bathroom/locker room situation. Dear god the horrific smells and filth. Bleach, people. It works, cleans, kills, deodorizes, and is relatively cheap.
Your staff needs to be trained better, held more accountable, and your management needs to lead/manage a little better, unless poor/mediocre is what you all are going for.
Note: Shrewsbury is multitudes cleaner, right outside the city limits, lifeguards enforce rules, and not too much more in cost.

I believe the YMCAβs shift to βThe Yβ and its higher membership fees were strategic moves to commercialize the brand and appeal to more affluent members. Unfortunately, this change has priced out many in the very communities it was originally meant to serve. This one in particular prices are higher than others.

I give 2 stars in consideration of the swim lessons they offer. First, the family locker room showers, reek of urine so bad that I was terrified every time I had to bring my son in there to rinse and change. As far as the lessons go, they weren't lessons at all. We went there a full year and my son learned nothing other than how to float. The instructors were lazy and wanted to play instead of teach. I really wish I could get all my money back that I put into this place. A total waste πͺ

There is mold in the women bathroom. I got sick and another member said she was sick also everything she get there. It is green and the mold smell. I spoke to the manager she said she is working on replacing the showers with tiles but my issue is tiles or no tiles, proper cleaning is what us needed. People will die with mold. I'm sick every time I go there especially in the past two weeks, vomiting, run stomach, dizziness, fever. All those are symptoms of mold poison. Only when I go to this place. I'm looking forward to the new renovation

I want to give a big shout out to
trainer Lo Blackwell. She has helped me out immensly. I have hit goals I hadnt thought I would achieve in a long time. I was in a rut and had little to no motivation. She wrote me up a work out plan and pushed me. Lo is sweet and very approachable and teaches a heck of a spin class. I hope people read this review and take her classes and see her as a personal trainer. She will not just motivate you, she will inspire you as well. Carondelet Park Rec Complex is also a great enviroment and friendly people all around. All people who work here should know I appreciate them.

I have officially canceled my membership. Today 9/8/2024 my car was broken into, my wallet with all my Ids and Cards were stolen, and my iPad was stolen. 2 weeks before that, someone stole my keys out of my locker. The staff was nonchalant about the car break and even got upset at me for asking questions. I was a very loyal member. I genuinely loved the amenities of this gym (hot tub, classes, equipment, location). I was in Zumba, Step, Core, Pilates, Yoga, and so many more classes. My niece was on the kids soccer team. I got my family and friends to become members. I would rave about how great this place (except the racism) was to anyone looking for a gym. The pool area was the closest thing I've ever had to a vacation. I came every other day, it was like my 2nd home. This gym saved my life, I had gone through some trauma and joining the gym really helped me heal myself. I lost 60 pounds and got in shape. I adored this place.
So much so that I put up with racism, harassment and possible stalking for years...but this is the last straw.
My identity has been compromised and $500 plus worth of property has been stolen. I'm devastated, but will find a better Gym.
I've attached pics of my old reviews so people can understand the context.

Today I was there. I saw a white dude was keep walking inside the pool area and upstairs complaining that someone has stole his shoes. For about an hour this guy was walking back and forth using f words, but no one was helping him. Then this guy took my shoes while I was inside steam room and I put my shoes behind the door. 2 minutes after he left with my shoes, one of the lady who was sitting close to my shoe said that the guy who lost his shoes took my sandals. I run bare foot outside to parking lot but I couldn't find him. I came back and reported to front desk and they called supervisor. The supervisor came and I told him about that guy who took my shoe. He said he will go and check the camera. For about 30 minutes I didnβt see the supervisor even though I gave him exact time when the guy took my shoes. I told front desk that Iβm getting late because I came here during my lunch break. The front desk said, put my phone number next time when that guy comes, they will ask him to bring my shoes. Thatβs not the proper way. How you remember that guy? The proper way, is after recognizing him via camera check your system he has scanned his barcode and all his information is in your system including name, address, and phone number. Call him and give him warning that why he took someoneβs shoes. This is a policy violation of ymca. He supposed to be banned for stealing someoneβs shoes. I left YMCA barefoot. Thatβs so disgusting. When that guy came to staff and complained to supervisor, the supervisor should have created an incident report and should have received all his information. If they did this, easily the supervisor could call him to bring my shoes back. People wonβt trust if their properties are not safe at YMCA

I signed up my family at the Carondelet branch to enjoy the benefits of everyone getting healthy. My company has a corporate discount program so I thought I would try it out. My first impression wasn't great, there was an off smell and it is a little rough around the edges and showing its wear and tear.
The gentleman who signed us up was very helpful and accommodated our senior citizen who was the impetus for joining.
I have been working alot and unable to visit for a couple weeks, and very kindly received a call to see if everything was ok and noticed I hadn't visited like the rest of my family.
I finally had a day off to visit and was treated very rudely upon entering. I was told to move because the front desk area is very busy, even though I stepped aside to try and figure out how to check in, download an app, get a tour, etc.
This woman however had no problem chatting with a guest about her baby"s due date, I guess she was too busy to help me. She told me I had to sign some paperwork and I needed to go around.
I moved to the side of the desk and still noone knew what I had to sign and why there was a note on my account that I pay for yet haven't benefited from for one minute.
I asked about a towel, a locker, the app, etc., trying to figure out how to go about my first visit. I was told there aren't any towels since Covid, I was upset my partner didn't prepare me in advance of my visit as to what to bring and one of the desk attendants professed her disgust at my comment saying WOW!
I told her I wasn't talking about her or anyone that works there. I was lost, confused and looking for assistance and that's how guests are treated!
I chose to leave and can go to the gym provided by my employer, I don't need to be treated like a number so rudely, No thank you!

A part of a public park was given to the Y and they show their appreciation by the most minimal upkeep, allow people in the steamroom with street shoes ignoring the health of seniors and those immune compromised (I spoke repeatedly with them about this and they did absolutely nothing!) women wear full Arabic clothing without first showering and get in the whirlpool which is unexpectedly often covered with a disgusting brown foam, lockers have their mechanism destroyed and not repaired - while they charge a fee to "hold" a locker. On a 5 point scale I give them a -14. Don't bother writing me - I switched to the well managed, friendly, clean, and maintained South City Y 3 years ago. Shame on the Recplex! Horrible customer service absolutely. The worst,.they need to get in the 21st century. If you need to make adjustments to your account, you shouldn't have to come in, it should be able to do it over the phone. anticipate a world renowned organization such as the YMCA Would do better.

I used the spinning studio and took a shower at the Y today. The facility was clean, and many of the exercise machines and other equipment were in use. The cycling studio has 16 modern spinning bikes. All but one was in use during two classes.
The instructors were pleasant though their routines were too easy for my tastes, so I modified the session to suit me.
The men's locker shows wear and tear from use, but it was clean. The showers offer privacy, and my unit operated well.

My wife and I joined Summer of 2022, cancelled Spring 2023.
We had mixed feelings at the time. The areas with the workout equipment were always so crowded and often dirty, but we liked the yoga and martial arts classes. As the weather warmed up, we stopped using the facility, so why pay for it? We decided to cancel.
Of course, they wouldn't let us do it over the phone, so we went in person to sign their papers. They said we would have to pay for the next month because of when we came in on the billing cycle. We rolled our eyes but agreed to do this- gyms will be gyms after all. And that was that, or so we thought.
Come September 2023, I get a promotional email and decide maybe we should give the gym another shot, get into swimming over the winter, etc. I call them to try to restart our membership, and they tell me that: A) we never cancelled our membership, and B) our bank stopped payment. They say we have to pay the nonpayment before we can become members again.
Now, I knew for a fact that we cancelled, but I wasn't paying very close attention to the bank side of things, so I double check just in case. Sure enough, our bank statements show we paid them in full during those months. So I email them and say there's been a mistake, but they disagree, no wiggle room. I tell them I've got bank statements to prove it, no response to that. Really? I've got proof you've made a mistake and you don't even want to see it? Being wrong makes too much paperwork, I guess. I don't even want to join anymore so I guess it doesn't matter, but people should know that this is a company that makes major clerical errors then refuses to even entertain the idea they might be wrong.

I signed up for the free 30-minute introduction to the gym and machines one on one with Kim. Immediately, she asked about my goals, comfort levels, and such and made me feel at ease. This is week two for me here. Quit orange theory due to the cost and not having the flexibility for times. I also wanted to save money to train for a triathalon and pay for those races. At this point Iβm wishing I could afford outdoor access as the swimming pool lanes are crowded 24/7 and also SO HOT! I also had to take a break on the treadmill tonight as I felt as overheated as I would outside even at a heat warning. I know itβs expensive to ac a large gymβ¦ but can we please find ways to put in some fans at least? Iβm dripping from the moment I walk in and itβs really killing my workouts. Can I please help find some places that could possible donate fans? Iβm going to invest in a mini one in the meantime. Again, not trying to complain and do love the flexibility the Y gives me.., the heat is just really tough to workout in.

Ok. The POOL ...So I go into its indoor pool for free first time bc you can't use the outdoor pool unless you become a member and it was not good inside. There were only a few thin pool noodles to go around the lazy river. The toddler area was super lame it was only one climbing structure and it was roped off. The big water slide was gated shut. So basically a big chilly water pool. Not what's in the pictures...

I keep meaning to write a review of this gym, but always forget. Not today, brain! This is definitely the best gym I've ever been to. A large selection of machines, never super crowded (can be a little crowded at peak times), and all kinds of people from all walks of life work out here. Haven't used the pool or basketball courts, but clearly nice perks as well. Staff is very friendly.
Extra shout out to Alex W. He was my personal trainer for a few months at the beginning of 2022. I'd never used a personal trainer before, so was admittedly timid, but he was phenomenal. I can't imagine you'll find better. Challenges you without being a drill sergeant, super friendly, and puts you at ease. Just an all around great guy. He helped me tremendously with my form and introduced me to several new exercises which I do regularly now. He's also incredibly attentive the entire time he's working with you. (I can't tell you how many times I've seen trainers at other gyms looking at their phones or not paying much attention to their clients. Not true of Alex.) I was interviewing households in this region for a community survey when I came across an angler fishing catfish and struck up a conversation with him; he has been fishing here for winter stocked trout and catfish. The park appears to be clean, serene, and attractive, with large, towering trees. I'll return with some buddies to stroll the park trail, enjoy the sights, and/or cast fishing line in the hopes of catching some big catfish. I strongly advise you to bring family members to this lovely park complex. Have fun! I made a YouTube Video to share it with friend.

I love this facility. It's well maintained and the staff are professional and friendly. My only gripe is how shallow most of the pool is and there being only three swim lanes that are almost always taken up. I need to be able to do aquatic exercises and you need at least 4-5 ft depth to do most of those exercises and the majority of the pool is 3.6 feet. You have to try and snatch a swim lane when you can and then suffer the dirty looks you get when you are just trying to use that lane to do your aquatic physical therapy. It would be nice if they had a separate adult pool or adult swim hours or a space for just aquatic fitness but I understand that's a tall order so I make due. This is still a great facility and I use it 3 times a week

New member , I had a emergency situation with my card on my due date , got the bill and they said itβs a extra $25 dollar fee because I didnβt pay it on the 1st of the month , well I never knew that and I feel that fee should be be waived because I wasnβt aware of that π wow

I believe they used to change the water twice a week in the hot tub now they went to once a month. They only change the water once a month that is absolutely gross and disgusting. Not to mention what they did to the YMCA in general. All those people that donated money to the YMCA for these doors to ββ never be closed. That is a crime. And there needs to be a really good documentary exposing the YMCA. Absolutely disgusting

I live nearby & only come here for the sauna bc I prefer to exercise elsewhere. Iβve spoken to management about the lack of cleanliness in the sauna & they said they would tell the janitors β itβs only getting worse. See the filthy floors, used bandaids, etc in attached photos.

The YMCA is a great place in the community to find faithful friends, and enjoy family time. My mom and I like to visit the new senior hub for coffee, games, and chit chat. Lori, our supervisor, plans some nice activities each month.

This is my home gym even tho it's 30 min away and there's 3 gyms closer. I love it there. Simply bc it's so modern, clean, and has a hot tub / sauna.. But it is VERY pricey!! And it is crazy how much I have to pay just to add my 3 yro just to go swimming..besides the boatload of money it's a great place. But also a scam bc unless u have 300 bucks u ain't using half the amenities.

I called to get a quote on prices for going to the outdoor pool, and they had really reasonable rates. I asked other questions about the process of going there for the day, where to go, etc, and the customer service representative was super helpful! I'm giving this place 3 stars though because after we got ready and packed up, drove out here, found parking, and walked inside- we were told that weekends are for members only and we would need to wait an hour for the indoor pool to open. The previous person I talked to didn't mention it was for members only on weekends, even after I said I wasn't a Y member. My 4 year old was super disappointed and got really upset that we had to leave immediately.

I worked at this Y as a teen and have had a membership for years. I chose to pay a larger gym fee to support the community and a good cause. Tomorrow I will actually be canceling. The weight room is plagued by disrespectful and aggressive teenagers. First, they almost stopped on my $1,200 keys to which I nicely pointed out to please be mindful. The response was threatening to βbest my assβ and βf*** offβ. Itβs sad to see a staple of south city run like this.

YMCA is unfortunately a total money grab. This facility itself is very nice and clean, however you pay for a membership thatβs twice the cost of any other gym, then to do half their gym activities you have to pay even more. We were excited to be able to enjoy their outdoor pool however soon realized thatβs an extra $140 for the 2.5 months itβs open. To pay the daily rate youβre not allowed to come on the weekends, even as a high-paying YMCA member! And I wonβt even mention how 75% of the front desk is not at all knowledgeable and acts like youβre such a pest if you ask for help with anything, their attitudes are unbelievable. Iβm so frustrated my family ever paid for this membership, such a waste.

They have a great indoor pool area with a kids splash pad and a slide, but cannot staff enough people to open those areas. Even with 30 kids in the pool, no one in the lap lanes, and 4 lifeguards on duty they can't open the kids area. Very poor management and planning. If you plan on taking your kids, do not expect to use the splashpad or slide. They are always shut down for swim lessons and when they are not fully staffed, which seems to be always. Plus the lifeguards on duty are extremely rude to the kids overusing tones that were unnecessary. We've been several weeks in a row, even calling ahead to make sure the kids stuff was available and been disappointed every time.

I recenty recieved a postcard from YMCA Carondelet inquiring about my need for professional fitness coaches. It caught me off guard. The facility itself is surprisingly nice. The first two times I went there I felt like I had already worked out enough for day. Showers were clean. Everyone seemed to Sanitize after each use..5 stars all the way.

I like coming here bc of the amenities BUT there are ALWAYS kids left unattended. They use weighted equipment to lounge in or climb on, making it hard for others to concentrate or complete a workout when equipment is being sat on or climbed on. In addition, the weights and other workout tools are thrown around, used inappropriately and left around. Itβs hard to workout especially in the free weight area where they bring basketballs and other βtoysβ where itβs not meant to be. Iβve complained to the front desk but I wish with all the employees that one - just one, would be tasked in walking around and making sure equipment is not being misused or kids are acting inappropriately around paying members. I could pay 1/3 of what I am now and go to Planet Fitness down the street where I know they are more strict with proper usage of equipment and unattended minors.

Nicest YMCA Facility that I've visited. The entrance floor has a Daycare, one for Infants & one for Toddlers, and also has a 'Teen Hub' equipped with gamer chairs, computers, and pool tables. (although no one's ever in there) Past the entrance gate, you have the option to walk downstairs to the workout area / locker rooms / basketball court.
OR, you can walk/run on the indoor track that revolves around the entire facility. For even numbered days, traffic moves clockwise on the track. Odd numbered days, you travel counter-clockwise. So, let's say it's April 1st, the flow of traffic would be counter-clockwise on the track. Pretty neat.
Indoor Pool has 3 lap lanes, Lazy River, Hot Tub, kids play arena, as well as a spiral mega-slide. There is a reasonably large outdoor pool that opens in the summer. Only thing that bugs me is: Members have to pay an additional one-time fee for summer time access to the pool. But, you also must be a member to access the pool, regardless. Kind of a double-standard.
***Nice place and design. Forgot to mention the Outdoor playground. Patrons don't utilize all the amenities offered here to its full potential, but one can appreciate the experience YMCA envisioned***

I enjoy attending the Y!! I had an excellent swim teacher and learned how to swim. I will be taking more swim classes and would like to take some more classes. The Y is a great place to meet people while learning how to live a healthy life. I am inviting my family and friends to sign up for a membership. Thank you for all the support! I grew up attending the Y and raised my children in the Y when it was at the old location. The Y is a part of my family!

I love this YMCA - I've been a member of many YMCAs over the years, and this is easily one of the best in the area. It is clean, staff is friendly, equipment is available/working as expected, and the pools are very nice.
*Note that the outdoor pool is a separate fee/membership during the summer, but our family joined that as well and loved it too. Thanks!

I love everything about the Carondelet Rec complex. It sits atop a hill in a wonderful historic park. The building itself is welcoming with its large windows and winding parking lot to the entrance. The open floor plan is inviting, it's nice to see the entire facility all at once. Seeing all the other people interacting and working out no matter which activity I choose keeps me going and reminds me what a great community we have. Running laps is one of my favorite activities at the Y, and I think Carondelet has the best track. The windows are well placed with lovely views of the surrounding trees and when using the track in the warm months there's an exciting bonus: through the windows you can often see the adorable groundhogs who live outside the complex poke their heads out of their hidey holes.
