I love this location. Everybody is super friendly! The facilities and equipment are kept in excellent condition. The staff really take pride in what they do, and it shows, from the front desk, to maintenance, and even the lifeguards. Itβs very family friendly and community oriented. Iβd highly recommend joining!

There are several staff here lacking empathy and the ability to practice positive conflict resolution.
Also lacking in cleanliness, comfort and inclusiveness, I highly advise you seek another YMCA location, as there are several in the Kansas City area.
This one actively practices discrimination and encourages negative staff-to-peer interactions. They have a special knack for making you feel stupid and small
As if the Cleaver YMCA hadn't dug themselves a deep enough hole antagonizing and bullying my family for the almost 2 years we paid for a membership here, they proceeded to exclude us took it from halloween activities this current year, when our family volunteered for the annual trunk or treat.
They have excluded my child and myself from participating in other activities. The staff have been confrontational with my family and remain partial to certain customers, allowing some people to blatantly break the rules, while others are held to unrealistic standards.
I don't doubt the Cleaver Y will post back with some lack luster retort to save face, but don't be fooled by another charade.
They are a progressive front, with no good intentions beneath the surface.

I didn't actually get to go inside the facility because it was after closing time. I'm from out of town visiting while my husband is receiving cancer treatments. The neighborhood that this YMCA is located in scared the daylights out of me. I was glad the Y was closed because I would have been terrified to get out of my car, and leave my car parked for an hour while I attended class. I'm afraid my car would not have been in the parking lot when I came back out. I was really looking forward to attending a class at this Y because the time of day for the class would have been perfect for my husbands cancer treatment schedule. Thankfully we drove over to investigate the area before I went by myself for the class. I'm never going back into that neighborhood again. The YMCA's in my city have me spoiled.

this place doesnt value anyone. we paid a lot for swim lessons but sadly a family emergency came up and when i emailed beth kennedy she didnt respond. so we went the first day of the lessons to see if we can talk to someone in person and she was there. she rudely spoke to my 5 year old about not being a member so she wasnt allowed to swim (we were an hour early because of the bus.) her not beimg able to get in without an adult is reasonable but her tone was not. then when i did speak to her i mentioned the email i sent that morning and she said, word for word, "i saw that email and chose to ignore it." these people think they are better than everyone else and that a time sensitive email doesnt matter because its an inconvienence. she then said she would refund the lessons but continues to "choose to ignore my emails." if you want to be treated like a human being go anywhere else. this place only cares about money and will treat you and your kids like filth.

Lots of people from different cross-sections of the neighborhoods in the surrounding areas exercise here.
Staff are kind, welcoming, accommodating, patient, supportive, and understanding of people from all walks of life.
Edit: I was hurtful towards an elderly person, without realizing it. An employee had a heart to heart with me about it. What they said, appealed to my better nature. Afterwards, I spoke with the elderly person and we got to know each other, a little better. Thank you to the Y for encouraging me to do better and be better to elderly community members.
Edit 4/22/2024: The earlier edit was done around December, 2023. I recently applied for a job here and have not heard back for reasons beyond my control. I think my review might have been helpful so Iβm still leaving on here. Please know that I have no intention of getting the job anymore because I did not intend to get the job in the first place.
Edit May 26, 2024 12:03 pm CST:
Itβs taken me a loooong time to finally say something: somebody broke into my locked locker and after I finally built the courage to say something to somebodyβ¦nothing was done about it, to my knowledge;
Final Update: something was done about it and I am no longer on social media.

I am posting this because if I donβt then the bloody noses I keep having without seeking to harm myself wonβt be my only issue. Without seeking to return, the YMCA has won with lying and I lost with the truth. Farewell in kindness and no happy holidays for me.

I like this ymca, great new equipment. Gets 1 star because they are letting people record now even though it's against policy. I will find a different place to go that enforces their rules. Also, The manager wants to make up there own rules when it clearly says online under 9 can workout with parent supervision.

We love this place. Our experience is mainly around child swim lessons. All of the instructors are wonderful, but Jacob is particularly encouraging, patient and attentive with not just our child, but in all interactions. They have many different activities around swimming instruction that I wish I had as a kid.

Love everyone here! Beth, Cody, and Cassidy are phenomenal swim instructors! Beth can come across as rude but shes really not. Shes very straightforward and the childrens safety and progress is her main concern, not making friends with parents. The girl with the braids is also amazing and patient with the kids! The ladies up front will make you feel like family if you give them the time! They're very accommodating and understanding of letting kids be kids! We started going here for swim lessons and now it's become a family outing we love to go to!

To Felisha Johnson. I love my son's instructor , the lady in question with the blond short hair. She's not mean, but she teaches the kids structure & discipline, and they follow. You may not like her, but our childrens life depend on following instruction from a young age, especially when it comes to water safety. She's not a lifeguard!! You have the lifeguards sitting outside of the pool 4 emergent situations. She is a teacher and mentor. So instead of bad reviews take your child/ children somewhere where you a comfortable. She will not let anyone disrespect, or disrupt her class, and i have seen her tell a parent their child was disrespectful and disrupting the class and had to leave. Regardless of gender, or skintone. Remain blessed ππΎ

The head lifeguard/swim instructor with the chlorine bleached hair asked me a question that I misunderstood when I was enrolling my child in swim lessons. She said, "That's not what I asked you!" She also made this rude remark in front of other staff. I didn't return negative energy because my only focus was getting my child enrolled for swim lessons. I also believed that if she spoke to me, an adult, in that manner in front of other adults, she would potentially be nasty toward my child. She is not kind. I am thankful that there was no issue with her and my child due to her disposition. The other lifeguard/swim instructor with the dreadlocks is also unkind. She does not communicate with parents concerning your child's progress unless you approach her. Both of these ladies' demeanor are unfriendly, stand-off-ish, and not warm. This is no way to behave with customers.

Pros:
-Friendly staff and convenient
-There is a Y nearby anywhere I am in the KC metro
-swim lessons for kids
Cons:
-I like doing body weight exercises on my own while my kids are doing swim lessons (limited time available as a parent) BUT the stretching area has gotten smaller and smaller these last few years as they move in more equipment.
-limited open swim hours

I enjoy the Cleaver YMCA it's all ways clean and the equipment is up to date. My entire family enjoys the activities and classes that are available.
Post Covid-19 12/9/20 the equipment is very dusty they need a good wiping down. They still have up to date equipment just wipe it down with sanitizer before working out on them.

DANGEROUS DO NOT GO HERE. A few months ago my car and belongings were stolen from this location the employees of this YMCA let a stranger into the building ( no ID and no membership). The person went into the locker room broke into my locker walked out side with my belongings and stole my car. After reviewing camera footage we realized what had happened. After realizing the employee was at fault for letting a complete stranger into the building I thought surely upper management would look to reimburse me for my stolen belongings (car was recovered but had to pay $500 for new key fob). Upper management basically took no accountability and brushed me to the side. I know they are not responsible for stolen items but I thought since they let a complete stranger into the location they would take some accountability for this. This is not just about things being stolen. The YMCA put everyone and their belongings at risk doing this. I would never take my kids to this place.

My family belonged to this location almost fifteen years ago. I am very impressed by the updated building, equipment, and other resources. I have visited at least 10 times within the past two weeks, early in the morning and late evening. Each time I have been extended a warm greeting accompanied by a smile!
The locker/shower/restrooms have been clean with a pleasant smell, every single time. I have been able to utilize the treadmills, stationary bikes, and weights without waiting each time I've visited. The entire facility is well lit, clean, capacious, and the mood is jovial.
Children and adults are able to enjoy this interactive facility in harmony! Today the staff rearranged and added new equipment to the main area!
