The two things this gym has going for it are Kent at the front desk, who greets members by name with a smile, and the city view. Other than that, it will continue to deteriorate as no improvements are made until it’s just another in a long line of Genesis ruins that were once nice, independently owned clubs.
I have been with Genesis long enough to understand the business model: purchase a club, invest no money, and keep trading on the reputation of the previous club’s name.

I've been a member at Genesis for a while but live near a different location. I come to the power and light location because the staff and energy is 10/10. The equipment might not be top of the line, but the staff does everything they can to make sure you stay on top of your fitness goals and feel welcomed.

I been coming to Genesis for the last few years and have seen it go through more management changes than I can recall.In the last few months things have changed and I have gotten the pleasure of connecting with the new manger that goes by “William”. While I previously believed this gym was heading towards its dark days William has given me a new hope. He has been nothing but kind and generous in his service to this location. If you ever feel sad or uninspired William And his team members such as Kim ,Natalie and Nick will greet you with a smile and a listening ear.

Genesis P&L is the best gym when it comes to working out in the heart of downtown KC. The staff is super friendly and has recently acquired a new GM named Will! Will always makes it his mission to get to know every member that walks in the door. The gym itself is maintained very well when it comes to cleanliness. I’ve tried a few of their group fitness classes and have really enjoyed cycle, body pump, barre, and boot camp circuit. The sauna is hot! Probably the best sauna I’ve been in since relocating out here. The equipment is nice, but hoping they upgrade their spin bikes to take this gym to a new level.

I've only been here once (so far) when I was in town for work, but a typically great gym. Lots of good equipment, clean, and between 2 and 4pm on a weekday, not terribly busy. The only complaint is that $25 for 1 workout is steep, especially in comparison to the YMCA ($15) which is only a few blocks away and offers nearly as much equipment.

For being in downtown , this gym is seriously lacking upgrades on equipment. Most of the stair-masters are badly rusted and jolt really hard. I had to switch to another due to fear of breaking down ! Lots of broken or very worn down equipment. Mats have chunks missing lol

Overall love the area and ease of access but def needs to TLC.

Also shoutout to whoever is promoting classes more. I saw the schedule up in the restroom which was new.

Equipment stays broken for months and months at a time, just waiting for someone to get injured. There is no official way to report broken equipment. No one who works here knows what to do and just says okay I’ll tell someone and it never happens. The include bench press adjustable seat does not stay latched and only sometimes latches to the top, but is a huge safety concern. It’s insane that there’s no real way to report broken equipment when members try to help prevent someone from getting injured.

I’m giving this gym 3 stars because I feel like the machines are outdated and not really my style. Even though it’s so close to me I have been going to another Genesis that suits my needs and has way more space. I think the machines need to be updated and the brand changed as they are mostly hoist and it would be better. Also the floors could be redone as they always look unclean and the visual of the gym doesn’t give me the vibe to enjoy my workout. However, I will give the the rep who signed me up 5 stars. His name was Daniel and he took the time to explain membership to me unlike the first time I signed up with genesis. Now I know all what the gym offers and where to find it. Thanks Daniel! I might do cycling classes here but as for strength training, I’ll choose another club.

I liked the gym but the disrespect and disregard was unwarranted I had a very distasteful experience with personal trainer coercing me to signing to the personal trainer and before I signed I asked if I could cancel if the schedule or some reason I couldn’t do the classes due to my new job I was told no worries you can cancel without any issues that was incorrect and misleading I have called the cooperative office and visited the gym to see how best we can resolve this issue and only to be informed the vice president will call you several times to getting no call do not sign anything i expected more from the gym I held them with so much respect but I am so disappointed

The pricing structure of Genesis is ridiculous. If you're starting a membership with them, look it up yourself. It was not explained to me at the time I signed a membership.

Every other gym I've been a part of had, at most, a two tier structure. One for a specific "home" location only and another for free use of all locations. Genesis has a multi-tier structure where you have to pay a significant amount more for access to certain gym locations. I didn't know about this until a front desk staff member challenged me on it, and made me pay an extra 5 dollars to access a gym I had entered for months. The facilities are not nice enough to warrant this price structure. I canceled my membership on my way out the same day.

Fair warning to anyone else looking to join. Unless you're willing to pay around 90 a month, you won't have access to most locations in the KC metro.

Edited to add: I was asked to come in and have a meeting with the manager. They said that they could not refund what I had already paid for the personal trainer, nor refund the days I was “checked in” and charged but had canceled ahead of time due to a health issue (I was on a cardiac monitor due to having to go to the ER after a personal training session). They did, however, in a very shady manner offer a future discount if I agreed to change my 1 star review. We canceled our membership, continue to have no resolution on the money charged for the “free” sessions or the canceled session. I recommend that when you read reviews, you also consider that the person writing them may have been offered a discount for a good review like I was. I hesitated to post this before as I am close with someone who worked at Genesis and I was afraid of any retribution, but now that they no longer work there I feel that I can safely share this edit.
I'm posting this review after attempting to go through arbitration through the Better Business Bureau, to which Genesis did not cooperate. The Better Business Bureau states they have made several attempts to contact Genesis without response. For a facility that is supposed to be associated with health and wellness, Genesis has caused me undue stress and despair. I feel that I have been treated dishonestly and taken advantage of for the amount of at least $400 by this location. The personal trainer that I had started working with left Genesis. I contacted Genesis to ask for my remaining sessions to be refunded as the person I had signed up to work with was no longer with Genesis, and that I should have several sessions in my account. Once I was able to access my account online, I saw that I had been charged for a session that had been canceled. I also saw that instead of using the free sessions that were advertised when I joined (and still marked as available in my account), Genesis skipped over those and went straight to paid sessions. Every attempt I have made to amicably resolve this situation has been met without resolution and with pressure to sign up for even more personal training sessions even though I stated in my original query and every correspondence since that I do not wish to continue personal training with Genesis at this time.

When signing up with Genesis, they advertise three “free” personal training sessions as part of your membership. However, I was charged for three personal training sessions despite these free sessions being available in my account. I also was charged for a session that had been canceled and I physically was not present for, despite being told that it would be fixed in the system when the error occurred and again when bringing it up to Genesis. It still is not fixed to this day.

When attempting to resolve this situation and find out why the promised free sessions were not utilized before I was charged/why I was charged for canceled sessions, I was told that I had agreed to a “no refund policy” when I signed the personal training contract. When I asked for a copy of the contract as I did not recall signing one and could not locate a copy of one in any form in my email or account, they emailed back that I actually did not sign one after all, but that they still could not provide a refund for either the session that they charged me for that did not happen nor the sessions that I was charged for even though there were free sessions in my account. I have read in other genesis complaint forums that multiple staff members do have the ability to provide refunds to accounts or via checks, so again I am led to believe I have not been told the truth.

I cannot recommend joining Genesis if you have another option available to you. If you do join this location, make sure that you have access to your account and watch it closely, as well as any documents that you sign. Keep records of everything.

This gym used to be great before genesis took over.. used to be 24 hours now they close at 10 pm and 6pm on the weekends.. the sauna hasn’t been cleaned in years and the wood has mold and buildup on it. For closing early they sure don’t keep up the facility. These mega gyms are not what they used to be.

This Genesis location is good, staff is friendly, usually pretty clean. Getting there is another story… you have to get a parking pass and validate it inside of gym which is annoying for frequent gym goers but the walk between the gyms doors and the parking garage absolutely reeks of cigarettes because the homeless camp out inside and smoke which is scary as a girl alone.

I visited this gym when out of town for work and was not impressed whatsoever. The front desk lady was rude and not at all friendly. The guest pass cost $25.01 for ONE DAY! The gym space is small and has outdated equipment. The equipment is mostly junk and 'Hoist Brand' which is worse than junk. The cables need replacement or at least maintenance as they do not operate in a manner conducive to smooth cable operation. The ancillary equipment for cable machines is very used, frayed ropes, broken or inoperable. The floor is filthy with dirt and hair and the artificial turf looks like it has never been vacuumed. Totally not worth a 25 dollar and one penny guest pass. I went to Flex Fitness KC the next day and paid 15 dollars a day and that place happens to be a REAL GYM with REALLY AMAZING EQUIPMENT. It's ten minutes away from this joke of a gym.

I love coming to this gym as a guest. I’m a flight attendant so a gym is essential for us so we can decompress after a long day. BEWARE!!! I had my membership here for a year and a half. I went in to this location, filled out paperwork canceling my membership. I was told I will be billed one more month and then I shouldn’t get billed anymore. I’ve been billed for the past two months after that before catching it I called this location and told them what happened and they told me I never filled out paperwork, I’m like you can pull up the video footage of that day. I was with my friend. We’re both heavily tattooed. I’m blonde. She’s Burnett. I can tell you exactly what to look for. They told me there’s no proof that that was me. They would cancel my membership immediately, but I would not get a refund for the past 3 months. They offered me a three month credit which I have zero interest in ever going to another genesis again. As such a big company, you would think that little money would be better to just refund me, then hurting their reputation.

I had a terrible experience with this gym. First of all, my trainer was not a good fit for me and it felt like a cash grab by the gym to put me in a program with a new, somewhat inexperienced trainer. Secondly, the guy in charge of the training program called me fat after my initial intake meeting. Finally, I was charged for months and months under a new name of the gym after they changed ownership and ever told me that my membership that was supposed to expire after a year would actually continue under a new name, so I missed it for months on my credit card statement. When I refuted it, they fought it and won and then made me come in after 6 months of paying them (and being unaware of it) so I could cancel. It was a huge waste of money. Much happier with Woodside and GymKC.

Nice gym, predatory membership policy. My personal experience was as follows:
I was pushed to get a 12 month membership and I instead got a 6 month membership because I was not sure how long I would be living in Kansas City. During this conversation, I asked what happens when the 6 months runs out. I remember being explicitly told that the membership expires, and I would need to renew it to continue. I should have read the contract more thoroughly, but they intentionally pulled me in the middle of my trial workout to sign the papers (I think knowing that I would not be as diligent in my reading). I ended up moving out of KC with 6 weeks or so left on my membership, so I was just going to let it run out. I forgot to check for a few months, and am now learning that after the 6 months was up, they just switched it on their own to a monthly membership at a significantly increased price. Not only did my membership price increase ~50% without any notice while I was unable to use it, I was made to feel like an inconvenience because I was not able to drive across several states to cancel the membership in person. Eventually I was able sign the cancellation form and send it via email, but I was informed that it takes 30 days to process the cancellation, so I will still be charged one more time before my membership is canceled. The year is 2024, nothing should take 30 days to process. Genesis scammed approximated $500 from me. I have heard of many gyms having predatory membership policies, I was disappointed to find out Genesis meets that mark.

edit: I received a follow up call where Genesis agreed to cancel my final payment. While still frustrated about the months of subscription I unintentionally paid, with proper diligence this is a high quality gym. The facilities are good, the staff is kind, I love the Power and Light location and easy parking is also a plus.

For the past month there have been several treadmills that do work meaning, they don't incline or the treadmill will stop when you start running. We pay too much money for equipment not to be working properly. I'm sure there is someone that does an audit on the equipment. Today I passed up two treadmills because they didn't work.

It’s a dump and not only do they not have built in locks on the lockers but they don’t even sell locks. Genesis needs to standardize its clubs.

Very nice facility with extremely friendly staff. Patrick, the manager, helped accommodate my husband and me as out of town guests. I will definitely return anytime I’m back in KC. The gym has tons of cardio equipment, some free weights and lots of weigh lifting equipment.

Not only do they make you be present in the gym to cancel your membership, they make you pay for an additional month. The alternative, they keep charging you! The cables were all tore up. Bathrooms always filthy. Avoid this gym like the plague.

Got a $25 day pass as I was in town for a day. Clean gym, good locker room, towel service which is nice. Good variety of equipment, for me the most important were access to lots of power cages and free weights. Also important and worth noting is the friendly staff!

I have been coming down to Power & Light since April 2023 and I would like to say that every single time I come in and leave I'm greeted with and "have a good workout" or Hello or Bye! Everyone is so friendly but would like to say my last visit ERNEST, MARIA AND CALES went above and beyond to make me and my boyfriends workout comfortable and fun! So many thanks! I would recommend this location and club to anyone! If you visit this location check out the theater room! Its awesome!

One star for an incredibly shady and frustrating cancelation process.

They have a one-month notice for canceling, which I knew about as I was planning to cancel my membership (I just wasn’t finding the time to make it in anymore). My membership “ended” in late June, so I went in in late May where I was told to sign on a cancellation form and I was good to go. Two months later, I realize I’m still getting charged for my membership. I call them up and they tell me they have no record of my cancelation and tell me I need to come back in and do it again because they don’t cancel memberships over the phone. I reason with the rep because it wasn’t her mistake and I honestly shouldn’t have to come in for something I already did. I get passed around on the phone until I end up with someone in membership services who tells me again that he has no record of my cancelation. I tell him what happened again and he tells me he’ll cancel it effective immediately and we’re good. Right? Right??!!

I was scrolling through my bank transactions in SEPTEMBER when I see that they had charged me TWICE IN THE SAME MONTH for a membership that had been canceled twice at this point. I call again and they tell me AGAIN they have NO RECORD OF MY CANCELATION. The person handling this call genuinely seemed like she wanted to help and said she would get it figured out immediately. I still have no idea if it worked. I think I got refunded for the double charges but I never received a follow up phone call I was promised.

If I go back to paying for a public gym, it won’t be with these guys.

I previously visited the Merriam location. I had not been happy with my membership and I stopped in at the P&L location with the intent of cancelling my membership with small hopes that it would renew my outlook on my membership. I was surprised with the customer service from Ernest & Maria upon arrival. I felt welcome and enjoyed all the nice amenities. I’ll be back to this location and I do not plan to cancel my membership now. Thank you!

It's all relative. There aren't many big gym options near the city. So, for KC folks, this place is above average. But in normal comparison, it's a borderline dump. That's also just Genesis for you. They bought a lot of run down Gold's Gyms equipment and spaces and have done nothing to make improvements in any of their gyms. Much of the equipment is in need of repair (one of many examples below). Anyway, pretty much all of it needs to be replaced due to obsolescence.

I was visiting for the weekend and stopped in to this Genesis location and was very impressed. The team at the front counter was very friendly and accommodating. The place was busy but not crowded. I never had to wait for a piece of equipment. The location is a lot bigger than it appears. I’ve been to a few Genesis locations and this one is at the top of my list. Less of a country club and more of a dedicated workout facility.
