Saw this gym while walking in the CWE and decided to go in and talk to the owner/trainer. Wayne runs a program around what his clients need to be strong, stable and fit. He encourages and supports each member, making sure he knows what each needs. In addition, he holds space to allow community to grow among his clients. I have not regretted any part of the two months since I have joined Train to Perform.

Joining Train to Perform has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only have my health metrics improved, but my overall mindset has transformed. I’ve become more mindful about how I fuel my body, the importance of rest, and even making time to be out in nature—and since starting at Wayne’s gym, I am actually crave a more active lifestyle.

The biggest physical changes have been in my mobility, flexibility, and overall muscle tone—and I can see the difference every time I look in the mirror.

The small group sessions allow for personalized attention, and I leave every workout feeling stronger.
The environment is comfortable and encouraging, with everyone in the gym wanting to see you succeed. What truly sets Train to Perform apart is the people. From day one, I felt like family, and that all starts with Wayne. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and pushes you in just the right ways, with the genuine goal of helping you believe you’re capable of being stronger and healthier than you ever imagined.

There’s something deeper to. Part of you that begins to heal when you start showing up for yourself. It is so incredibly empowering!! It’s more than what being good at your job, or even a good friend, spouse or partner, can provide. For me, it started with the very first phone call. I could already tell Wayne believed in me simply because I picked up the phone and chose to change the trajectory of my health, happiness, and livelihood.

That healing continues every day I walk into the gym and leave with just a little more love for myself. Wayne has a true gift for blending genuine care, passion, compassion, and grit—and it’s that combination that pushes you to become the best version of yourself.

I’ve already started to see that version of myself, and I can’t wait to continue this journey.

I’m a woman in my 40s who has spent my entire adult life in and out of gyms, working with various trainers, and trying just about every weight loss trend out there. But after working with Wayne at Train to Perform for the past year, I can confidently say I’m in the best shape of my entire life.

Not only have I dropped multiple dress sizes and lost over 15 pounds, but I’ve built strength and tone I’ve never had before. I actually look like I work out now. More importantly, my joints have never felt better. I’ve always struggled with joint pain that limited my ability to push myself—Wayne built a custom program that not only worked around those limitations but actually improved them.

I train with Wayne four times a week, fitting it into a packed schedule running a business and raising a family. He makes it work—and he makes it count.

If you’re serious about your fitness journey and looking for someone to take you to that next level with a truly personalized approach, stop looking. Go train with Wayne. Period.

Before working with Wayne, I had limited experience doing strength training. When I last tried at home, I injured myself. Working with Wayne and the wonderful community has built has been life changing. I am doing things I never thought I’d be able to, making progress week by week and getting stronger. Wayne cares about us and this is clear in his approach, how he will tailor workouts to each person, takes the time to get to know us and has created such a vibrant community. I highly recommend Train to Perform. Not only will you not regret it, but you just might meet a version of yourself that had been elusive.

Wayne is easily the most knowledgeable, dedicated, and caring trainer I’ve ever met or worked with. His awareness of my needs and the things I’m most struggling with is nearly telepathic, he tells me about my knee pain before I even feel it and adjusts my form so I can get the work in without getting injured. If you’re looking for a way to become the healthiest you can be, train to perform is the answer.
…and that’s just Wayne himself. He’s also built a community of people from all walks of life and at all experience levels that will help you stay with it and enjoy yourself through the hard work it takes to improve.

I love working out with Wayne! I spent a lot of time in the past trying to exercise on my own watching YouTube videos, but I couldn’t stay consistent as I was constantly doubting whether I was doing them right. Train To Perform has helped me tremendously in building structure, knowledge, and consistency. Signing up for the small group class is one of the best decisions I made since moving to STL this past year. It feels like a community of its own, and Wayne really helps you feel at home providing a space for everyone to get to know each other while also identifying and accommodating everyone’s individual needs. He’s a great instructor who educates and empowers you. He’s quick to correct you but I never feel ashamed of making mistakes. He ensures you have a strong foundation before moving on to the next level, which I think is so valuable. And I feel supported and encouraged knowing there are people on a similar journey! Can’t wait to continue and see my progress unfold.

Every class session with Wayne is both educational and a serious workout! Each day the workout is different- his circuits/repetitions are never the same but focus on the correct way to move and correct the way to use equipment and those areas - class sizes maybe 1 to 6 attendees. Classes are always different from the previous day and great conversation during rest periods.
Always look forward to my next session @ Train to Perform!

Wayne is a remarkable person & trainer. I’m home from NYC taking care of my Mother. My sister is a client and has always raved about her experience. I joined her for an early AM boxing group session. Wayne was warm, inviting and attentive throughout my time in the gym. I’ve always wanted to try boxing. Wayne’s class was the perfect introduction for me. He gave me a great overview of the punches and numbers we’d use throughout the session. He paid attention to me and other participants throughout & offered adjustments as needed. I enjoyed the session and plan to attend future sessions when I’m back in town.

Where do I start?!?! Train to Perform is thee BEST personal training experience I've ever had. Wayne's spirit and energy go unmatched. His program is thorough and there is a reason for every movement he trains you to do. The amount of knowledge I've learned since training with him has boosted my confidence when I go in any gym. I know exactly how to train for the first time in my life after years of working out. I'm no longer lost when I walk in a gym feeling like I don't know what to do. Now I know I'm doing my movements in great form to prevent injury and to get the most out of each movement! I've tried other trainers and they just weren't compatible with my training needs. I wanted a trainer who really cares about your success, who's motivating/encouraging and I got it with Train to Perform Fitness with Wayne.

TL,DR: Personal training with an expert and sincere trainer at an unbeatable price.

Overall structure & client relations:
Train to perform is an excellent personal trainer setting at a much more reasonable price. Wayne is immensely knowledgeable and passionate about educating while training. For the scientists and doctors among you, there is none of the fad or misinformation-based, quick-solution approach, or non-sense logic about how physiology works, which may have irked you at other gyms or with other trainers. He makes sincere efforts to motivate you, create a plan for you to reach your goals and to share credible information about achieving and maintaining fitness.
1. He has a methodical and adaptable approach to training where people of every age (young teens to 80-year-old adults) can train and still feel satisfied with the outcomes.
2. He has several long-term clients who have been coming to him for over a decade.
3. You have the option of one-on-one training as well as training with your partner in a couples’ class or in a group of 4 ppl, with multiple fee structures for every need.
4. You schedule and check in to classes on an app where you can also see your history of all classes from the beginning.
5. Wayne is also quite accessible via texts and answers questions you may come up with later in the day about the session/schedule/exercise/nutrition, etc.
6. He also regularly checks in on you about your experience after the session and about your nutrition and sleep.
7. There is also a sense of community in the class and across groups. It makes you want to go for the class and not miss any sessions.

Training approach:
1. Wayne starts you with an assessment of your current mobility and strength before bringing you to a foundations class. You learn the technique and form for each exercise in the foundations class, avoiding a steep learning curve while strength training and also allowing your body to adapt to new exercises.
2. After consistent attendance and demonstrated ability to perform, you graduate to the strength training class. Technique and safety are still the top priority in strength training class.
3. No matter which class you are in, you always start with a full body warm up and end with stretching.
4. Even in a 4-person group, Wayne is able to pay adequate attention to every individual’s form and provide corrective feedback. For a trained dancer like me, this attention to detail in technique is one of Wayne’s most striking qualities.
5. He brings in a lot of variety in exercises that target the same area and gives stepwise instructions for each exercise every time, also informing you of the muscle groups being targeted.
6. Despite the different exercises in every class, he astutely tracks your progress such that your muscle strength continues to build and the cognitive burden of tracking your own progress is negligible.
7. He seems to have multiple variations of almost every exercise, catered to different strength-levels, prior injury and rehabilitation-status, age/weight categories etc.

Types of classes:

1. There are 3 types of classes – Foundations  strength training; Stick Mobility and Boxing/Conditioning, each with a distinct flavor.
2. The Stick Mobility class is for increasing mobility and flexibility in muscles and joints. This is one of my most favorite sessions. The vibe of this class is serene and slow.
3. The Boxing class is an intense one; the focus is on cardiovascular conditioning while keeping an eye on proper form. He teaches you several techniques that are self-defense oriented.

Wayne’s sincerity and drive transfers to your workout, making each session physically and mentally fulfilling.

I’ve been strength training since 2000 and have utilized several trainers during that time. Wayne Hawkins is - without question - the single best trainer I’ve ever encountered. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, dedicated to his clients, and designs workouts to specifically address my goals. He motivates me to work hard during my workouts, discusses and incorporates “whole health” issues (such as nutrition & sleep) into our discussions, and has helped me become stronger and more fit as a result of his guidance. He is simply THE BEST at what he does!

My wife has consistently worked out at Train To Perform (TTP), and I've joined her occasionally—both in the gym and at TTP gatherings. Prior to TTP, she never felt like she found a gym where she truly belonged and it's so clear that she's right at home here.

Mentally and physically, her hard work every week has paid off thanks to Wayne and her gymmates (I know everyone's name even if I haven't met everyone in-person yet).

Having never been athletic or an “exercise person” before, I was nervous about working with a trainer and taking strength training classes. I didn’t even know how to use most of the equipment at gyms (other than the treadmill). But Wayne and Train to Perform have been amazing, and I now enjoy and look forward to exercising! My strength, balance, and flexibility have all noticeably improved in a few months. Wayne is a wonderful teacher - he explains clearly, looks out for everyone’s safety, tailors each session to each individual, and is encouraging, energetic, and just fun to work with. The other students I have met have been kind and supportive; there’s no judging or criticizing of what kind of shape anyone’s in, what they look like, how much they can lift, etc. Wayne’s studio/gym is also meticulously clean, which I really appreciate. If you want to get in shape, or you are already in shape and want to learn proper techniques so you get the most from workouts and avoid injury, I highly recommend Wayne and Train to Perform. Don’t be intimidated and don’t think that a trainer or training classes are a waste of money - think of them as an important investment in your health.

When I started looking for a gym in St. Louis, I knew I wanted a trainer I could trust to understand my abilities (and limitations), hold me accountable to my goals, and work with me on a long-term plan to be healthier and more fit. Wayne has checked all those boxes, and small group training has been an extra boost of accountability. Strength training, boxing, and stick mobility are such a perfect combination of activities—they're each challenging in their own ways and contribute different things to your overall fitness goals.

I have been with Train to Perform for 18 months and I'm not only healthier, but I'm more empowered and in control of my health than I've ever been. I truly believe Wayne can train anyone, and the TTP community is evidence of that. Any age, any ability, any gender, any level of experience—this is the most diverse boutique gym I've ever seen. Train to Perform is a welcoming and inspiring environment to work-out in. As someone who has worked with both personal trainers and group exercise classes for 15 years +, I can say without a doubt this gym is as good as it gets. One of the pitfalls of group fitness can be that clients are served a one work-out fits all dish and this is NOT what you will find here. Wayne has a special ability to meet his clients wherever they are in their fitness journey and then he tweaks every workout to keep everyone in the room safe, challenged, but never outside their capacity. One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about TTP is the focus on functional movement; since joining this gym I’ve improved my strength and (perhaps) more importantly my my mobility. I can feel everyday tasks and movement slowly becoming more effortless and my nagging “stiffness” have disappeared. In addition to the work-outs, the gym in a wonderful source of kinship and knowledge sharing. Since joining the TTF community I feel myself continuously improving, learning, motivated, and proud to be part of a great gym. Thank you Train to Perform!

After leaving my personal trainer and gym back in California, I was worried about being able to find a new gym home in STL. Wayne welcomed me with open arms. He is extremely knowledgeable about health and fitness and engages all his clients in taking ownership of their total health outside the gym. Classes are fun and energetic and all gym members are super friendly and down to earth. I'm super happy to be apart of the TTP family!

Wayne is the best trainer you could ask for. He is very knowledgeable and super encouraging. He is actually invested in everyone he trains and it shows every time I enter into the gym. It truly is a personalized experience. This is by far the best experience I’ve ever had at a gym. Wayne provides a supportive environment that fosters not only growth in personal fitness but also education about fitness. I highly recommend anyone looking for a trainer to work with Wayne. I've belonged to other gyms but Training to Perform is different and this is because of the personal commitment and dedication of Wayne, the owner and only trainer at TtP, to each of his clients. He is very passionate and caring and takes a sincere and authentic interest in each person that trains with him. Wayne's strengths are his many years of experience as a trainer, his desire to give personal attention to each client, and his infectious ability to motivate others. As a result the quality of training at TtP is top-notch and I can sincerely say that I have never been this motivated to work out before. I can't recommend Wayne and his gym highly enough!!

TtP's group classes max out at 4 people and this allows Wayne to treat each individual as if they are in a private or semi-private class. I am in my 50's and have old shoulder and knee injuries and Wayne has worked with me to slowly address those issues and build up my strength and mobility without getting hurt. Towards this end, Wayne recommended mixing in his stick mobility classes with the strength and conditioning classes and that combo has made a noticeable difference in my overall mobility. In only six months, my training has made a huge positive impact on my everyday life and mobility.

Motivation to make time in my day to work out has always been a challenge for me, as I am very busy in my professional and family/personal life and find it difficult to work out by myself. I have enjoyed group classes in larger gyms, but the large class size and frequent turnover in trainers were always obstacles to making progress and staying motivated. Motivation has never been a challenge for me in the 6 months that I have been training at TtP, and that is because of who Wayne is as a trainer and person...and the music he spins! It is a whole body experience. I love working out at TtP!

I'd been looking for a trainer that provided true individualized personal training in a small (none big box store) setting and I found it with Wayne. The man has endless energy, provides precise details on how to execute an exercise so you don't get hurt, makes sure you know your fellow workout partners, lively upbeat music, remembers your particular ailments, provides alternate moves, and motivates you to be your best. Prices are very reasonable and classes are available to fit any schedule. I started a few times a week and now I'm moving up to 6 times a week. It's been 2 months and I can already see a difference in my body.

Wayne is an outstanding trainer. What I love most about Train to Perform is how well-rounded each workout is. The foundations classes provide a perfect primer for strength training. I have been training at Train To Perform for about three months and can truly see a difference. I have been working out for year but never taught proper lifting techniques or proper fitness techniques in general which resulted in me not getting the result I was looking for when working out in other gyms. Since I have been working out at Train to Perform I am finally seeing the result that I have been looking for, for years. Wayne assures that the technique is right and explains the benefits of each move that he maps out for the workout circuit. I am happy with my results so far from working out here at Train to Perform

I have been working out w Wayne and Train to Perform for 9 months. Not only do I love the small group sessions and the personal attention, I love the sense of community. Wayne cares!! Train to Perform takes each athlete where they are and builds upon the conditioning and strength level.

I joined the Train to Perform family and not only have gained strength but I am training by body in ways I never have. The Stick mobility and the Boxing classes are an amazing complement to the strength training sessions.

As my fitness has increased, I added personal training sessions with Wayne into my weekly routine. This is the highlight of my week. Just another opportunity to engage and push my mind and body to a new level.

I highly recommend TTP for whatever you fitness and healthy goals are.

I came to Train to Perform with a serious neck injury and long term goals to be more healthy than I was when I started quarantine. I had some gym experience with a trainer and some physical therapy experience prior. After a little over a month, I can say that I have experienced superior direction in whole body wellness at Train to Perform. I am able to get the attention to detail that I need to facilitate my healing, and I am able to ask questions and learn the mechanics of the exercises I am doing. (My last trainers had me doing the exercises wrong and misusing muscle groups!) It's been just over one month but I've already experienced massive improvement in my injury, very encouraging muscle development, and even am correcting posture pain I had while sitting and walking. Most importantly, the experience at Train to Perform is not intimidating like most gyms - it's more than okay to come here and not be fitness queen #1. Am definitely now on the way to health though!

Wayne has pushed me to become a better me. Entering personal training for the first time, I wanted someone who pushed me hard AND noticed my progress. Wayne does both. He innately knows how to push but not go overboard. He also has an incredible ability to individualize workouts for people, even as they are training in groups of four. He has a holistic approach to self care: one day he coaches me on what to eat and the next day he will challenge my mental mindset. One of my favorite Wayne quotes: “You have to say goodbye to the old you for good....that person is gone now. Don’t look back, only look forward.” I would highly recommend him to any person.

Train to Perform was the best decision I made for getting my health back on track! Wayne is the man! I didn’t know what to expect using a personal trainer, but Wayne is extremely personable and made me comfortable right from the start. He walked me through his class structure and how he approaches fitness. The classes are tailored to each individual based on their abilities; Train to Perform is not a one-class-fits-all mentality and this is great for making everyone feel comfortable and attain their goals. He has variations of every exercise we do to accommodate to all skill levels.

Wayne really knows fitness and health and always provides tips and knowledge in his sessions. I guarantee if you stick with him and are disciplined, you’ll see results. I worked off 27 pounds in just 4 months at Train to Perform. I feel so much better physically and mentally after getting back in shape with Wayne and his gym. When I think of the best way to sum up my experience at Train To Perform (TTP), three words come to mind: CARE, CONSISTENCY, AND COMMUNITY. Wayne has embodied this three words since I first joined in June 2019.

CARE
Since day one, I have felt a sense of care from not only Wayne but the entire gym community. Before starting to train, Wayne schedules a 1:1 meeting with each of his clients. During this meeting, you get an opportunity to talk about your fitness goals, ask questions, and learn more about what his gym has to offer, and complete an initial exercise assessment. I had never completed a fitness test before joining a gym, but I appreciated this because it demonstrated to me that he really valued having an understanding of where he needed to put his expertise. Wayne doesn’t just focus on the physical aspects of fitness, but uses a holistic approach. He also does an excellent job at starting clients out based on their current abilities. Each client starts in “Foundations” which are classes dedicated to teaching proper technique and form. If you want someone who is invested in you and cares about you both inside and outside of the gym, Wayne is the person you want to see.

CONSISTENCY
I can always depend on Wayne to put his clients’ best interest first. As a member, you know what to expect when entering the gym. For example, before each strength class we utilize foam rollers to activate each muscle group and after each class we dedicate time to stretch. It’s easy to get into routine, and when Wayne notices your individual routine is off, he makes sure to touch base with you and check-in. He has seen the positive results his clients can have by following his training techniques and nutrition tips, so he consistently asks for updates on how things are going. Don’t be surprised in the middle of the workout if you get asked, “How’s your sleep or what has your eating been like?” I didn’t realize how much I appreciated someone encouraging me to remain consistent until I started training with Wayne.

COMMUNITY
One of the greatest perks of the gym by far has been the relationships I have built at TTP. Since classes are small, you get an opportunity to get to know the folks you workout with on a personal level. We laugh with each other, encourage each other, and support each other when necessary. There is nothing better than being able to joke around with folks as you complete your least favorite exercises. We even find time to dance during our “5-second breaks,” and reach out to each other through our Facebook group to keep in touch and share information with each other. I can honestly say the people at Train to Perform are like a second family to me and I look forward to working out with them every single day.

Overall, I would say if you are looking for a gym, and oh did I mention it is black-owned, where the trainer/owner really cares about his clients, offers tangible ways to reach your fitness goals, and build community with others Train to Perform is the place to be. While the #redcarpetofdoom by be intimidating when you walk in, the overall experience will keep you coming back for more.

I also love that each workout is tailored perfectly for me. The classes are small, and everyone else I've had the privilege to meet there has been encouraging and fun. If you have been wondering about Train to Perform, check it out! I know that you will love it, too!

I’ve never been to a gym like Train To Perform. I’ve worked out at other gyms, but never had great results until I started here. Such a motivating environment and I always look forward to training!
