First timer who had nerves about joining but I soon realized that it was a welcoming environment and the people are great. Amazing workout and educational experience, 10 out of 10. I would highly recommend others to attend if in the area.

Dan Covel as well as his assistant teachers are exceptional. I explained my situation on why I wanted to train and received a warm welcome.
Also I had a small injury last year and all my training partners and coaches were understanding. Thank you for the opportunity to better myself. A wonderful Martial Arts Facility.

I was always curious about martial arts but hesitant, especially considering I am a young woman with no previous experience. A few months ago I decided to pull the trigger and check out the gym. Best decision ever. Everyone was very welcoming and super helpful. There are not as many women at the location I go to but everyone still makes me feel comfortable. Dan is a great teacher. I would definitely recommend checking the gym out and trying a class.

Dan Covel is the only reason I would travel to New Jersey. He’s a master technician but more importantly he can effectively communicate his teachings and genuinely cares about your progress.

I stopped in for an open mat as a visitor doing a drop in. Dan was super cool about letting me train since he was one of the few gyms that was open New Years day. Overall a very tough room with high level guys and girls. I could tell by the 10 or so rounds I did with each individual that the training and instruction is high level and the folks and environment could not have been friendlier. Highly recommend if you are in the Newark/Jersey City area.

Dan Covel’s approach to a jiu jitsu school is unmatched. The technique is incredible, the culture is welcoming and tight knit. There’s an emphasis on exceptional training above all else.
I trained with Dan for a little over a year before moving to a new state. I came back to visit after 6+ years out of state and was welcomed back with open arms. If you want a dedicated coach with exceptional technique and a strong culture within the program then this is the spot.

Ive been training for 22 years. I’ve known Dan since 2008. I knew him to be a sound technician and dedicated student of the art. I met him as a purple belt and he was a brown belt and judo black belt. I finally came up to his place to train as I was up in North Jersey for the weekend. I made an 11 am class. The space was clean and well organized plus it has a shower for people looking to train on their lunch break. The students were warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Dan put on a well structured class focused on pins and head an arm chokes from side mount. After we had open mat. I was impressed with all of his students. They were tough and technical. Dan is better than I remember. I felt like a baby rolling with him. If you’re in the Newark area, I can’t recommend enough. I haven’t trained in his Manhattan spot, but if he’s teaching you should go.

I've trained at Covel's for nearly a year now. Dan dedicates himself to providing high quality instruction to all of his students (both Newark and New York locations). He provides full attention to all students as they drill and make sure that they receive the appropriate feedback. There has never been a moment where I ever felt that I wasn't getting 100% of his effort.
Students in his gyms also hold themselves to the same high standards that Dan sets for himself and for us, both beginners and advanced students. We have multiple black belts, some with their own academies, that still look forward to Dan's teaching.
I, myself, have been very happy with the jiu jitsu that I have learned from Dan and hope to continue to develop my game.

I can not say enough good things about Dan and his gym. He has created a competitive and friendly training environment at his space, and strikes the perfect balance between technique and live rolling in his classes. Whenever I am visiting NY/NJ, I always go to Dan's gym to train.

I’ve trained with Dan a lot over the years and he is an excellent instructor. He teaches practical techniques that he himself applies in competition. He’s very knowledgeable, highly intelligent, and a very nice person. I always look forward to training with him. If you get a chance to train with him – do it!

As with acquiring any skill, knowing you have the best instruction at hand makes it easy to take ownership of your development. Dan Covel MMA provides just that - if I don't pick this up, it's 100% on me.
Dan is extremely skilled in both striking and grappling. He demonstrates concepts in a practical manner with a focus on retention. He truly loves the sport and is genuinely invested in the advancement of his students - that’s very hard to fake and makes a huge difference. Everyone in class makes an effort to help each other improve. All the tools are there for your success; all that’s required is to keep showing up.

I’ve been training with Dan for almost 4 years now and have gotten to train at a lot of different programs. Training and learning here has been one of the best experiences in my over decade of experience in jiu jitsu. The training here is definitely accessible to all levels and worth checking out!

Ive been training with Dan for about 7 years now and aside from the excellent jiu jitsu instruction, the facilities he instructs at are no different. Dan has some of the most affordable jiu jitsu programs in the tri state area for the best quality. Most importantly Dan always tries to make training accessible as often as possible to accomodate people’s work schedules. Whether you’re looking to work out, compete or learn some
Self defense, hit up Dan! You won’t regret that you did!

Won’t find a better place to train in NYC/NJ area. Dan is knowledgeable and disciplined at such a level that it’s impossible not to level up if you’re consistently training. Dan trains hard and there is a structure and system in place to help you progress. I’m a better person for having started my jiu jitsu career with Dan.

I've trained under Dan for just over a year now and cannot recommend his instruction highly enough.
Classes are thoughtfully structured and progress through a technique/position over the week. Typically, one week is focused on an attacking sequence and the following week is focused on the defense. Throughout the progression, focus is given to correct execution and grappling fundamentals (head position, hand fighting, push and pull, etc.). There's no pressure to advance the progression if your execution in earlier stages need attention but Dan ensures there's a challenge for every level of student. Dan is very observant and provides clear feedback.
When the time comes for live rounds, we begin standing and have no partner restrictions based on belt. The environment Dan has created is tough while being safe and inclusive.
Come through for a trail class and enjoy phenomenal training.

The absolute best jiu jitsu and grappling in the NYC and NJ area… very welcoming and classes are built for any skill level. Straight forward instruction where you learn very quickly while having fun. The one thing I will also say I have never seen an instructor care about their students than Dan.

Dan Covel is a world champion grappler and an even better coach. His jiu jitsu/mma striking technique is practical and grounded in solid principles. He gives each of us individual feedback and trains alongside us to reinforce those principles. Dan genuinely cares about our development as athletes and also as humans.
