I came in to use the 3-day guest pass advertised on the LA Fitness website, but the experience at the Avenel location was terrible. As soon as I arrived, Julius told me I had to either leave my card number or give them a 5-star review just to use the pass. I explained that this is NOT what the website says, and he basically replied, “Well that’s what I’m saying.”

The General Manager, Christian, then backed him up and told me it’s his gym, and I could either do what they say or leave. Extremely unprofessional and rude. I actually planned on buying a membership after trying the gym out, but their attitude ruined that completely.

Avenel LA Fitness is going downhill. They clearly care more about squeezing money and forcing fake reviews than providing a good experience for customers or potential members. Very disappointing.

I’m extremely disappointed with this gym. Most of the machines are either broken, outdated, or poorly repaired. It feels like every time I come in, there are fewer machines available to actually work out on and the ones that are “fixed” are still not safe to use.

I even ended up with a shoulder and knee injury because of how unstable and worn out the equipment is. The machines are so old and poorly maintained that they don’t move the way they should. Even when they repair something, it’s not done properly the movement mechanics completely change, putting stress on certain joints (especially the knees). Instead of helping with form, the machines force your body into awkward angles and increase the risk of injury.

I joined to improve my fitness, not to walk away injured. This gym needs urgent maintenance and professional repairs because at this point, the equipment is unsafe and not worth the membership.

It’s a good gym but the sauna bench has a nail sticking out that got caught on my shorts and ripped it. I’ll delete this review once they fix it. The nail is on your left on the upper bench as soon as you walk in the sauna

1. This shoutout specifically goes to the front desk staff named Dylan. I left my headphones at the gym one day. The next day, I asked a group of 5 seated at the front desk if anyone had dropped off my headphones. While everyone said no, Dylan said yes. Within seconds, he returned my headphones. 2. It also goes to show that humanity still exists as someone was kind enough to drop off the headphones and not steal them. 3. Side note: as a member that can attend several LA's in NJ, the Avenel location, in my unbiased opinion, is the best one around my area. Good job to all the employees for keeping it clean, safe, and trouble free.

I’ve been coming to this LA Fitness for a while now, and it’s disappointing to see how long it’s taking to fix the equipment. Many of the key machines for chest, back, and legs have been broken for over a month with no signs of repair. Members pay full price, but the gym’s condition keeps getting worse. It’s really frustrating — I hope management takes this seriously soon.

Today I visited the sauna, steam room, and pool area, and honestly, it was a very unpleasant experience. Inside the sauna, several people were wearing shoes and workout clothes, and even exercising with dumbbells and bars. This is not only unsanitary but also unsafe. What’s most concerning is that the gym staff doesn’t step in or enforce any rules. I truly hope management takes action to ensure a clean, safe, and appropriate environment for all members.

I've been training at LA Fitness for a while now, and it's been a great experience overall. The gym is clean, well-maintained, and has all the equipment you could possibly need - from free weights and machines to a basketball court, pool, and sauna. This is a very bad place to sign up with. I was overseas and called to cancel my membership because I was not going to come back soon.The truth of the matter is they won’t allow cancellation without me physically being there. They end up charging 10 months plus another annual membership fees. THIS IS PURE ROBBERIES. Today I had successfully cancelled it and asked why I couldn’t cancel my membership. Their response is now “yeah it’s possible now since 3 weeks.”
Avoid them at all costs, I don’t care about getting a dime back from them but I care about the people that already sign up and the ones yet to do so.

Could be the worst managed LA Fitness I have been to and unfortunately it is my daily workout spot. On the whole, a very nice gym. Excellent range of weight equipment. Opens at 5 AM. Main drawback is the condition of the spin class equipment. Two-thirds of the exercise bikes are broken. The audio system hasn't worked for weeks. We've raised this as an issue repeatedly with management and there has been no response.

Hello,

I would like to report a serious hygiene issue in the sauna area. Many people are entering the sauna wearing shoes, which is very unsanitary. The heat and sweat make it even worse, and it’s disgusting to think about sitting in the same place where people have walked with dirty shoes.

In addition, the showers have very low water pressure, and the water flow is not enough to rinse properly before entering the sauna or the pool.

As someone who swims and uses the sauna in a proper bathing suit, I find it very uncomfortable and unfair that others are not following basic hygiene rules. There should be better supervision and control to make sure everyone respects the health and cleanliness of the facility.

My experience was very beautiful. I had a pleasant time with the front desk and they helped to make sure that I was comfortable and make sure that I have everything that I needed to enjoy my workout but the one thing that I did not appreciate was the lady janitor that was in the back. She was very rude. Kept giving me disgusting attitudes and she wasn’t doing anything. I complained that there was no toilet tissue in the bathroom and she said she’ll get it and I was stuck in the stall for like about 15 minutes, so one of my friends came with some wipes. I didn’t have a lock on my locker because I forgot it at home and when I walked in. It looked like she was trying to snoop through my bags, and when she realized it was my locker, she tried to quickly put whatever she found back, and when I looked in my bag, nothing was missing to the point that I can’t trust not bringing my lock for one day without somebody trying to snoop through my things along with anybody else’s stuff She’s not helpful at all. All she does is just stay her phone all the time she’ll sit down not doing anything and if she clean, she’ll clean like one thing and then just continue to be on the phone watching the same videos over and over and over so I feel like the cleanliness could be a little bit better with a better janitorial service

What do you look for in a gym? A place where you feel safe to challenge yourself? How about a playground for growth--supporting you in your fitness journey, no matter where you're at? Or maybe a friendly community who regardless of experience level, share what they've learned along the way? This and more is what I found when I finally took the leap to join a gym at L.A. Fitness in Avenel.

It has been one year since I joined after scheduling a gym tour with Djessyka. She answered all of my questions and even set me up with a membership contract that was very affordable and even offers long-term savings if I renew by term completion--proving that health and wellness don't have to hurt your wallet.

Since joining, I have been offered personal training sessions with different trainers there. Even though I ended up declining the offers, both personal trainers, Chris and Nick, remained a positive influence on me whenever I saw them around the gym--always ready to share valuable information if I had a question about equipment or exercises.

Some of my favorite parts of this gym are the weight room and turf area. Equipment is maintained well and the staff employees are always encouraging members to wipe equipment surfaces clean after use. This is hard to enforce but it makes a difference. And whenever there is a problem with equipment, I simply report it to an available staff employee. And then they call in an expert to fix or replace the equipment. One example that comes to mind is the decline bench: it was missing the leg roller attachment for quite some time. I was told that they were handmade and that it might take a while to order and finally replace. While it did take longer than expected due to an unforeseen reason, the supportive staff ended up ordering an entirely new decline bench instead of waiting even longer for the replacement part to be made--further showing the staff's commitment to maintaining safe equipment.

While some of the amenities have received some harsh criticism by other members, both from the past and present, I have noticed many changes in management and in the facility (even though I’m there for only one year). I have seen the pool closings for scheduled cleanings and the janitorial staff are working very hard daily to not just maintain but improve the conditions, especially from crowded gym sessions. I think if more people unplugged themselves from what distracts, they would begin to see what I see too.

I want to start off with the machines a bunch of treadmills, Stair-master’s down!!

Secondly- When I went in to activate a pass my friend gave me to tryout out the gym the general manager there named Jessica told me that the pass isn’t valid unless I put my card number on file or sign up today????

Lastly- I came with my friend who gave me the the pass because there allowed to bring a guest and the gym is absolutely chaos weights everywhere bathroom a mess and when I tell the person Enrique he proceeds to get upset with me says to Jessica that Im being extra and laughed as I was walking away about how Im on a guest and can’t “afford” a membership.

I was having some problems with the other managers when discussing payment and other issues I was having, Isaac who was one of the employees there was very understanding of my situation since I was just coming out of the hospital from an accident. He gave me multiple options for payment not only for me but also for my family members who wanted to start the gym. I pay $60 a month for a membership with guest privileges and expected the experience to match the price. Unfortunately, this LA Fitness location falls short compared to both other branches and private gyms I’ve used.

Here are the main issues I’ve noticed:

1. Management feels unresponsive.

2. High-use equipment is often out of order, and repairs take far too long.

3. The overall upkeep doesn’t reflect the cost of membership.

For comparison, I previously paid $55 at a privately owned gym that consistently maintained its machines, invested in top-quality equipment (Arsenal, Life Fitness, Matrix etc.), and offered specialized bars for squat and bench. I joined this LA Fitness hoping for a similar or better experience, but that hasn’t been the case.

This location has the potential to be much better. If equipment and upkeep were prioritized, members would see the value in their membership, and the gym would likely attract more people. Right now, it feels like customers aren’t getting the experience they’re paying for.

Absolutely disgusting treatment of their customer. I also would like a full refund as I was coerced into joining. I asked the sales lady if I could use my guest pass for the full 3 days before deciding, but she told me I had to sign up right then & there when I told her I wanted time to think about it. The sales tactics were not ethical. Then the collections department is overly aggressive & called me 4 times in one day before noon because my card was locked/declined. I understand them calling, but not back to back. They are relentless to get their money & will blow up your phone instead of being normal & just leaving a message, then following up the next day. Their billing dept is like breaking up with a psycho partner if you are even one day late. I soon after made a payment on the website & multiple attempts were made to still collect my monthly dues after I already paid. Their website & app are very antiquated, especially the app. Luckily my card declined almost 5+ times daily because I use the lock feature, but I kept getting notifications from my credit card company. I was hoping talking to Enrique, the manager, would put my concerns at ease, but he only increased my concerns as he did not answer my question about how to pay online properly so I don't keep having my card hit after the payment is satisfied. Enrique called me rude & ultimately hung up on me because he was not listening to me & he was wasting my time after I told him I was on break at work & had very limited time. Being direct when one is pressed for time is not rude, it's being to the point. I expressed to Enrique that I am a victim of identity theft & that I only feel comfortable paying online & asked him how to do so properly so I don't keep getting my card hit as he said I made a pre-payment so that's why my card kept getting hit, but he offered no resolution after asking him multiple times about how to pay properly on the website. Instead of listening to my needs and direct question, his response went directly against what I had just explained about me just wanting to pay online. He then proceeded to say I could pay at the gym location, which I explained I'm not always able to get to the gym & my question was direct "how do I pay online properly ?", which he ignored, not just once, but multiple times. He then proceeded to tell me that I could call the gym & pay with him directly. Again, that was not my question. When I expressed that he wasn't answering my question & that I was pressed for time & just needed a direct answer about how to pay online & at this point he called me rude & hung up on me as I was saying to him "so you are refusing to tell me how to pay online?" & all I heard was click in mid sentence. Last night, I also was speaking to JD (front desk worker) who was very nice and helpful with my issues & I have no idea why some female that works there unnecessarily interjected herself into our conversation & was very annoying. JD had everything under control. No idea why that female thought her 2 cents was welcome or needed. Myself & JD were doing just fine. To be honest, JD was my only positive experience at this location. In addition, there is hardly anyone cleaning the equipment or facilities outside of sweeping the locker rooms from what I saw during a busy time (7:30pm on a Wednesday). I did not see anyone wiping down anything & the shower drains were full of hair during my first visit. I also did not see a place where cleaning products were available to wipe down my treadmill before or after using it(unless I missed it).Lastly, I had scheduled an initial appt with a personal trainer when I first joined. The day of I had to cancel prior to our appt.I was told the personal trainer was busy when I called, but that they would return my call, but they never did call back & I never met with a PT. Overall, this gym has been a nightmare especially for someone who didn't want to join on day one & voiced this to the sales person. I am asking for a full refund as I was forced to join against my will & my wishes on day one.I cxld my acct

Signed up hoping for a decent gym experience. What I got instead was a front-desk greeter who acts like she’s guarding a fortress, not welcoming members.

Jessica clearly needs about 20 miles of personal space at all times — don’t ask questions, don’t make eye contact, and definitely don’t expect basic customer service. Her vibe says, “Why are you even here?” the moment you walk in. Every interaction felt like I was interrupting her day by simply existing.

It’s one thing to have an off day. It’s another to make an entire gym feel cold and uninviting. And unfortunately, that’s exactly what she does.

I canceled my membership because the atmosphere was just off — and Jessica’s attitude was the final straw. There are better gyms out there where you’re not made to feel like an inconvenience for showing up.

I recently canceled my membership, and I’m honestly relieved to be done with this place.

The main reason? Jessica.
Her attitude is by far the worst I’ve ever encountered at any gym. Unfriendly, unhelpful, and completely unprofessional. Every interaction with her felt like I was an inconvenience rather than a paying customer. She talks down to people, rolls her eyes, and acts like answering questions is beneath her. That’s not the kind of energy anyone wants when walking into a gym.

I gave this location more than enough chances, but the constant negativity and poor customer service—especially from Jessica—pushed me to walk away.

I do NOT recommend LA Fitness in Avenel. There are better gyms in the area that actually value their members and hire staff who know how to treat people with respect.
