Terrible place. It is an absolute mess. Weights everywhere. Good luck finding a matching set of dumbbells. The staff could not care less and never clean up, nor greet you when you walk in. They use dumbbells to keep the doors open to the aerobics room. Many of the positive reviews are fake by people with zero reviews and all “praise” the same staff member, probably because he tells them to post a fake review. All LA Fitness locations in north Jersey are the same, a total mess. I have a yearly membership and joined another chain cause LA is such an awful place to get a good workout.

I visited the facility accompanied by a guest, with the only intention of showing them the gym as part of the free pass promotion—not to add them to my existing membership or bring them in as an ongoing guest. According to the LA Fitness official website, the only stated requirement to access the free pass is to present a “picture ID with birth date.” However, I was informed that only a U.S. passport or state-issued ID would be accepted, which contradicts the publicly stated policy.
In addition to this discrepancy, I was disappointed by the way the interaction was handled. Unfortunately, the staff member attending us was not courteous, and the situation made us feel unwelcome.

There are lockers here that have had the same clothes and garbage in them for literally months. Possibly over a year. It’s horrible practices in this gym. The toilets are all disgusting and the staff is horrible. The front desk girls are not too bad, some are nice. The manager tall guy and the other tall guy trainer say stuff under their breath as people walk by and are just rude/nasty people. This place needs a major overhaul. It’s true machines are always broken and they literally have buckets out in the middle of the floors catching water, there’s been a leak in the hallway leading to the locker rooms for weeks and they just have wet towels in the floors. Stay away if you can!

Important Note: There are two employees named Chris at this gym. This review refers to Chris, the General Manager at the Ackerman location.
I recently joined this gym and had an extremely disappointing experience with Chris, the General Manager. While warming up with a guest in the aerobics room, we used some free weights that were already there. Chris came in and told us that weights aren’t allowed in that area, which I can understand. We tried to explain that the weights were already there but and he spoke in a condescending tone, repeatedly saying, “Well, you’re using them, aren’t you?” He then said he would be adding a $10 “service charge” to my account despite my guest and I offering to re rack the weights.
Before I left I confronted him about his behavior , he avoided eye contact with me and directed all his responses toward my guest, who is male. It was clear he wasn’t taking me seriously because I’m a teenage girl, which felt dismissive and disrespectful.
Later, when I went to update my payment method, he rushed to the front desk and told the staff not to process my card because he “didn’t trust it,” accusing me of trying to avoid the $10 fee. That was completely untrue I’ve already paid all membership and maintenance fees. So I don't understand the correlation.
I contacted corporate, and they said they would call the location to address the issue. Soon after, I received a call from Lorraine, another manager from the same location. Unfortunately, she was passive-aggressive and dismissive throughout the call. She went silent multiple times as I explained the situation and offered no real solution. At the end of the call, she sarcastically said, “I hope you found our conversation constructive, even though I didn’t talk much.”
As someone who works in customer service, I find this level of unprofessionalism unacceptable. Members deserve to be treated respectfully and taken seriously.
Lastly, on another occasion, I personally saw Chris, the General Manager, picking his nose at the cubicle area in full view of the gym floor . extremely unhygienic behavior for someone in management.
Overall, this gym needs serious improvement in professionalism, respect, and hygiene.

Today was officially my last straw with this gym. I’ve been attending Monday through Friday every week for the past three years, and a series of issues have led me to terminate my membership.

While working out in the yoga/dance room, minding my own business, the general manager, Chris, approached me with a hostile tone. He later claimed it might be “subjective” that I took his tone the wrong way. I use this room because I prefer not to work out in the open. Over the years, other members often leave weights in this space, and it’s common for someone to use them for a workout.

Chris told me that weights are no longer allowed in the yoga/dance room, banging against a sign on the wall with tiny print. I respectfully explained that I found the weights there and had used them before without issue. When I asked about canceling my membership, Chris did not ask for my reasons. Instead, he insisted I re-rack the weights I found. I told him I would not, and he then demanded I leave the room. I explained I had finished my workout and would meet him at the front desk to proceed with cancellation. As I left, he made an unprofessional comment: “That’s why there’s always Planet Fitness.”

At the front desk, I clarified that my decision was not about pricing—customer service matters more than cost. Chris continued to complain about picking up weights multiple times a day, which is a staff issue, not a member’s. I explained that I always put my mat and weights away and that had he approached me respectfully, I would have gladly helped. Unfortunately, he chose to take out his frustration on me.

Based on this interaction, I do not believe Chris is fit for a GM position. A general manager should act professionally and seek solutions that prioritize the customer, especially for a consistent member who attends five times a week.

Beyond this incident, the gym itself has serious maintenance and cleanliness issues. The women’s bathroom and locker room have gone without soap and paper towels for a week. Cleaners sometimes come through while members are working out. The cycling room has been closed, forcing everyone into the small turf area, making workouts cramped. Equipment is often unavailable—even at 6 AM—and many machines are broken or insufficient in number (for example, only two leg press machines). The gym has no sauna, frequently smells, and the roof leaks when it rains.

Membership is not free, and as someone who takes her fitness journey seriously, the gym is like a second home. One thing I’ve learned is that if you feel disrespected or unwelcome somewhere, it’s time to leave.

Thank you, Chris, for pushing me toward a new and better gym. I’ll take this as a sign for a fresh start in my fitness journey.

Horrible. This Gym does not have enough equipment for their members. I had to buy and bring my own bars, rope, etc to hook up to their machines. Nothing worse than having to go to a gym to wait in line ugh!!!
They never clean the machines ever. I've been there many times when they're closing and came back the very next day as soon as they opened and seen the same garbage still there, the weights still sitting all over the workout área. They're always always out of paper towels. I spray and clean the equipment before I use it, and it's always super dirty. The cleaning people only walk around pushing the cart, not actually cleaning. 👎👎👎

Its difficult to locate weights (even at 630 AM) as some are completely missing from the gym. They have a sign that reads " Do not bring large duffel bags to the weight area" so my guess is people steal the lower lb weights. Also, several weight benches in a row are stripped into the incline position because they havent fixed the adjusters. Cant locate any yoga mats other than a few scattered around. Terribly run facility.

I’ve been a loyal LA Fitness member since 2019, but after today’s visit, I’m seriously reconsidering my membership. I came in simply to add a family member to my existing plan and was met with nothing but attitude, disrespect, and outright hostility from a sales associate named Chris.

From the moment we spoke, his tone was nasty, his facial expressions were visibly annoyed, and his behavior was completely uncalled for. When I mentioned that I received a promotion via email, instead of calmly explaining the discrepancy, he snapped at me, saying I should have told him earlier and blamed me for not seeing what he showed me. Then — shockingly — he said, “That’s not my fault if you have vision issues.” Completely unprofessional and offensive.

When I calmly asked what was going on with his attitude bc his face expressions were so weird , he then accused me of being prejudiced and said, “Is it because I’m Spanish?” That was a disgusting and manipulative comment — especially considering I’m married to a Spanish person and have Spanish family. This had nothing to do with his background and everything to do with his horrible customer service and disrespectful behavior.

If this is how long-standing members are treated, it’s truly disappointing. I expected professionalism and courtesy, and instead walked out completely disrespected and insulted. Management needs to address this immediately, not sure if that is his normal behavior or he was under the influence of something, anyhow that is not normal!

Men's locker room is absolutely filthy and in dissary. The photos in this review represent the way the locker room has been for over one month. Staff hired to clean during the day on Saturday are not doing much... Broken sink, broken urinal, broken toilet, and toilet stall doors are also busted...

The pool got closed because it didn’t pass the inspection. The staff has no idea when it’s going to reopen. I am honestly not surprised given that LA fitness pools are all generally not well maintained and full of mold, rust and other dirty stuff that no one cares about. This one was so far the cleanest one and it even failed to go through inspection. The other Clifton location is even worse.

They were only nice when you signed up. Once you paid them the money they treat you like they’re some slave masters. It’s the first time I ever go to a place where the staff is trying to educate a customer how they should wait quietly without questioning for an hour before getting serviced.

I signed up for personal training. During the sales pitch Hazem the sales guy played nice. When I tried to downgrade to less sessions he ghosted me and asked me to wait for an hour although it was a simple 2 minute procedure. The manager Chris was of no better etiquette. Instead of resolving my problem he went on ranting about how I should just wait patiently for the service. He could have told me to have the front desk help me. No, he was too busying educating me how I should behave myself instead of helping. I guess it would be a different story if I were there to upgrade.

The trainers vary vastly in their attitudes and skills. Ugo is very attentive and informative. If you still want to sign up with this place he’s the go to trainer. The other trainer that was first recommended to me was unenthusiastic, kept conversation and eye contact to the minimal and rushed to finish a session. I’m not going to name her here because she’s still young and might learn to be a better trainer along the way.

The pool is out of service a quarter of the time throughout the year and the spa can barely make it to half. Water in the pool can be really cold sometimes. Everything is about making more profit and cutting corners.

The pool is usually very clean. The facility makes an effort to keep Locker rooms acceptably clean.

the bathroom needs much better up keep. Please make sure to wear gloves and a mask (keep the door open). To not mix the cleaning chemicals. Please fix and clean the bathroom. Thank you 🤗

Decent gym, but maintenance needs work. Water fountains half work half dont and are a huge time killer. Safety seems to be a lack of concern even when brought to the attention of staff.

Tomas signed me up, great person.

But management sign me up twice and it’s making it difficult to get a refund for the extra membership… 190 initiation twice and 62 annual fee twice.

This is a great gym...the staff is absolutely amazing...Chris was so professional and helpful..went out of his way to show us this great gym....the place is huge ! Chris demonstrated great client service!!!
