My home gym is down the shore. I decided to try out the South Plainfield location on 11/19/25. Everyone at the front desk was helpful. A young woman, I believe her name was Tiffany. I had such a great experience at this LA Fitness thanks to Zayd. From the moment I walked in, he was extremely welcoming and went out of his way to help me with my membership questions and give me an exquisite tour of the gym. Definitely NOT a 4.2 star gym. Like everyone else has been saying. It can be super messy with weights everywhere and on any given day 5+ machines can be out of order (for weeks/ months). Associates are nice though, I've never had any issues with anyone working here. Super crowded during peak hours (like any other gym in the area). You get what you pay for. Its a 30 dollar a month gym, people. Just go work out and leave.

My family and I have had 2 bad experiences here. The people who work the desk try to rip you off. I came in with my mom to sample the gym. They didn't mention it would cost us $20 to do so. They wasted our time, pissed off both of my parents on two seperate occasions. Pathethic. By the end of it I said "idgaf about this' and threw a 20 on the desk and got me and my mom to leave. They also disrespected my dad, who everyone says is the best dad. Dont you dare disrespect my dad, whoever that sassy hispanic woman was when discussing membership prices or whatever. This Gyn is badly mismanaged. I am going there for last 4 months, reported below issues to the staff multiple times but never addressed.

1. Most of the resistance machines have weights going in 20lb increments with no ability of smaller increments! All other Gyms I have been to have rotating knobs or bars to adjust weight in 5 lb increments.

2. One machine has the horizontal bar to adjust, but there are no weights on the bar so effectively you still cannot adjust. Image below.

3. The free weights dumbbells are never in their marked places. They are all randomly thrown somewhere where in that long rack. You have to struggle to find the weight you are looking for. I understand this may also be because people using the weights are not being respectful of others, but the management take responsibility- may be post notices for people to put the weights in right spots, or from time to time have a staff member put them where they belong.

By contrast, the Retro fitness in Clark has none of these issues. Their resistance equipments have proper 5lb increments, their free weights are almost always in the right spots, etc.

Equipment is always broken or almost. Sauna planks are missing. Gym is always a mess. The manager is always “on vacation” every time you try to talk to them. It’s not what it used to be and prices just keep going up but quality is plummeting.

Had an incredibly terrible experience at the LA Fitness on Oak Tree Rd in South Plainfield, I came with my sister who uses a GymPass to come here, I was doing the 3-day free guest pass as offered on LA’s website, I came on day one and they took my ID and didn’t explain anything about the guest pass or give a tour or literally anything for that matter. Day 2 I go in to use the guest pass again and I scanned in my guest pass just as I did yesterday, and signed the form they wanted me to, I was taken behind the counter to the membership desk with employee, Zayd, and was told since I already used the guest pass yesterday under my sisters I couldn’t today, she doesn’t have a direct LA Fitness pass and doesn’t even have guest abilities. I let the guy know I came yesterday and had never come prior to this gym. I was told I couldn’t use it today or again for that matter. I asked to speak to the GM, his name is Amari, and he flat out said that I either needed to pay the $20 for the day pass or leave. I asked to see the guest pass policy that states that I couldn’t use it for all three days and even showed my email from LA showing that. I then left the gym feeling frustrated, I called the corporate number that LA lists and after explaining our situation he got in contact with Amari from the location, who then decided to issue the 3-day guest pass to me so problem solved.

In all, it should’ve been explained to me why that happened and why I couldn’t use it, I was very much considering using this gym as it is much closer to my home and offers different benefits from the one I currently go to. But now, since being treated unfairly I do not feel as though it is worth it to go here to have employees who simply do not care or give any decency to people wanting to come here.

⚠️ Membership Scam Alert – Guest Pass ⚠️

Those taking new memberships, please be careful. There is a scam going on in the name of the guest pass.

👉 They tell you that you can add a guest pass for $5/month when you sign up, and that you can also add it later for the same fee.
👉 But when I tried to add it later, they said it would cost $20/month plus a $29.99 upgrade fee.

Because of this, I decided to take a new membership for my husband and wanted to add a guest pass to that. But the same person (who enrolled me earlier) quickly skipped the guest pass page and went straight to the contract agreement for signature. When I asked to go back and add the $5 guest pass, he said I now had to pay $20 since I had “already started signing the contract without it.”

I hadn’t even completed the contract! When I asked him to go back, he was hesitant and even lied, saying he had asked me before and I had said no — which never happened.

👉 Finally, after insisting, I made him add it for $5 as originally stated.

🚨 Please be cautious of these tactics and the money looting happening here.

I just moved to the area and tried out multiple gyms. When I came, the front desk staff was very inviting. I believe her name was Jayla. Then, I spoke with Jasmine and she showed me around the gym. The lack of maintenance and upkeep of the machines is extremely disappointing. The leg press machine and leg extension machine have been out of order for well over three to four months. Prior to that, they were broken for an extended period as well.

When I approached gym staff about the issue, I was repeatedly told that the equipment is “on backorder.” However, I have noticed that at your Edison, New Jersey location, broken equipment is repaired within one to two weeks. This raises concerns about whether the delay at this location is due to a lack of attention from the franchise owner or if the backorder issue is not as severe as stated. The discrepancy in repair times is frustrating and unacceptable.

2/14/2025 still not fixed and more equipment in need of repair. No response from emails or IG or FB messages.

2/19/2025 more equipment broken - still not fixed

3/5/2025 still not fixed. I don’t get how Edison LA and Staten Island LA can get things fixed in a week but this location cannot

3/19/2025 - equipment still broken. It’s dangerous at this point as people are using broke equipment

3/31/2025 - equipment still broken…. This is a joke at this point

update! 5/1/2025 - the leg press machine is fixed!!!! Wow months later. But sadness the leg extension machine still broken no back. Once fixed will adjust my review. Crazy though

Irresponsible staff, Today around 7:30, There were three associates sitting on the desk, Senior associate sitting on the right side, eating and spitting Again, and again In front of me and all other customers. Eww. Careless staff of LA fitness

The woman working here was incredibly rude to me and my daughter. I pay for the premier $39.99 membership which includes a guest pass, and I dropped my daughter off after signing in and was going to leave to work, yet this woman stopped me and said I was not allowed to leave a guest here, even though I have done this a number of times. I was told when I first joined that I can sign the guest in, and was never told that I was supposed to stay there. She repeatedly yelled at me and was not understanding at all, and was quite RACIST to both me and my daughter. She also has an Attitude and temper problem, I’m surprised she got hired here for working at the front desk when she is supposed to be kind and have a smile on her face. She refused to tell me her name either when I asked her. As I was waiting outside for my daughter to come back, my daughter told me that this woman told her “your mom’s membership is getting cancelled” and that my daughter “cannot work out anymore.” As my daughter was going to get her stuff, another worker yelled and THREATENED her that she has to “leave in the next 5 minutes” before they “call the cops for trespassing”. My daughter played no part in this, yet they still were very rude and angry towards her. This woman has a DISGUSTING, uncompassionate personality, and the team overall had poor communication and hospitality skills.

Pathetic experience I brought my mom on a guest pass and the lady on the desk rudely said that it will take 24 hours which she lied about . Then after l showed the q r code to the other guy and he let us in . That was a discrimination. I really want to reach out to a regional manager to tell him the attitude we received at that location. Disappointed

Worst Attitude of manager !!!
I chose Option 3 and it came down 744 $
they said its written that 1 guest is included but when I see breakdown they added 60$ / year to bring 1 guest with you.

I told manager (Black skinny Lady ) that I am bound to get 637 offer since its written and she said no prices change every hour.

are they located on wall street or oak tree ave !!

I will law suit this facility for sure. they are cheaters. better call me and offer me that price soon

Ill start with my big problems first:

The vibes of the front staff and management are rancid. Immediately upon entering you feel that they don't care about you or each other.

I wanted to try the gym out with a 3 day trial. When I got to the gym they immediately asked for all forms of id and the manager (who clearly only wants to get your money from you) sits you down and tries to get you to commit to a plan. After saying I needed to think about if I wanted to, he said I was good to try a three day trial. The next day I come in and he insists he told me about some steps we did not go over the day before before continuing the trial. It's clear the company either wants your money immediately or does not want you at all, and will go lengths to get you to pay as soon as possible

The ammenities are nice. Some of the machines didn't work, but all the ones they advertise are there.

Really, it depends on what you're looking for. If you want everything they're offering for a steep price (around $650/ year), and you don't care about the staff treating you like a slab of meat, go for it.

If you're just looking for a weight room in town, there is no reason not to just go to the PAL for a fraction of the cost

AB is the best, always ready to help anyone with their needs whether it's a question, concern, or finding specific equipment. It was my first day in the gym and he helped me find the machines I needed with no hesitation, and even provided some insight towards a recent injury of mine. Very considerate and professional staff with a positive and uplifting attitude

I am a members to this gym from 1 and half year. but I don't like because I pay money for me and my son as gust but when my son wanted to enter they don't allow with out me I am paying for both
and always that treadmills show it as maintenance. they are asking to show id proof every day for me last 3 days and allowing. if they have any system issue they have to fix but they should not trouble the customers
