This review is long overdue and I really thought long and hard about not commenting about The Max Challenge of Montclair. I started as a member and then worked as a Max Challenge General Manager for another location. I returned to Montclair for a few months and proceeded to cancel my membership, which I signed the form and left it with Eva. Eva was relatively new as the General Manager. I told her by the time limit to not be charged for the next billing cycle that I would in fact like to cancel. Having known the parameters of the Max Challenge membership agreement I find it abysmal that Toby is still trying to seek an additional month from me. This started in February 2024 and is STILL continuing. You are harassing me at this point for a matter which is resolved and I will report you to the BBB.

FUTURE MEMBERS …. Do yourselves a favor and find another gym franchise to workout at. The headaches of receiving passive aggressive phone calls and written communication are not worth the workout. If I could leave this company as a whole with negative stars I would. The only positive component are the trainers and I feel very sorry that they have to work for someone like this. Oh and that Christmas party that they threw last year for 35+ people at a pizzeria with only 3 pizzas with the pies cut into 16ths y’all should be ashamed of yourselves. Lastly, stop talking about your staff and members to other members and staff; it’s not only unprofessional it’s tacky.

I’ve been a member of this establishment for over 4 years and I must say that I’ve had an amazing fitness experience with my health. If you are one of those people who join a regular gym and end up going only five times — The MAX CHALLENGE is for You because they WILL NOT allow you to give up. With over 8 daily fun-filled classes to choose from, frequent and friendly text reminders to come to class and a team of WONDROUS No- Judgement highly trained fitness instructors, you WILL be in class! My favorites are ELLIE— a laugh till you cry and squat story-teller who will have you exercising to Beyoncé ! IF YOU press the snooze button and miss her 7:00 am class, you can boogie to 80’s Classics with LISA at 8:30 am. The Max is the best part of my day! Donta and Duane’s classes have helped me get toned and back into shape. The Max has challenged me, made me focus on putting my health first, and has overall made me a healthier/happier person. I have been training at the Montclair location for about 6 months now and can honestly say if you want to get into shape and get toned, this is the place to do it. The balance between HIIT, strength training, and kickboxing really gives you a full body workout. Also they have great music and the trainers bring me joy and are super encouraging!

It’s a real testament to a gym when 5 years later, the people you started the program with are still going and the same instructors are still there. Beware, unfiltered honesty post!

I was terrified to go to MaxFitness. It had been years since I had been to a gym or a fitness class. I tried the “I can workout at home” approach, only to be left with super expensive valets and less space!

From the minute I walked into MaxFitness, I knew I had made the right decision. Firstly, every ‘body’ looked different. And everyone looked happy! The instructor made all modifications super clear (I’m the Modified Kid!) and the music was terrific. Not only am I my way back to fitness but it’s also a workout for my spirit. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you needed something until you get it.
In closing, do it. Do it for you. Everyone can’t wait for you to get here!

I joined Max Challenge Montclair late in the spring of 2020 when some Covid-19 restrictions had been lifted. We met in beautiful Anderson Park. I am probably one of the oldest members and I am also a cancer survivor Despite that I enjoy the regime. I feel the instructors push the participants to the "max." with enjoyable but challenging routines. The music they play while we exercise is wonderful. When we moved into the gym, everyone adhered to strict Covid-19 and CDC guidelines. I greatly appreciate that. I can exercise knowing that the gym is doing its best to keep the participants free of this horrible virus. I highly recommend Max Challenge Montclair. I am glad I joined and will continue as long as I am physically able to do so.

I have tried many different gyms and programs. The Max, by far, is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can remember going to a gym and trying to put together a workout or getting on a treadmill and running to only stop after 15 min. I needed a push... the Max did that and more. I joined this gym two and a half years ago after struggling to find a gym I liked my whole life. Since joining, I have lost about fifteen pounds and gone down two full sizes. I feel healthier, stronger, and more flexible than I've ever been. The gym encourages not beating yourself up for your failures, but instead jumping back on the wagon when you fall off. The Max of Montclair has a great community of members, trainers, and managers. They have done a great job offering in-person, hybrid, and fully virtual since the pandemic began. I was a Max of Montclair member for 2 years- and it saved my life. Really!! And when things shut down last March I had to take a break for financial reasons. I am now ‘back’ (my dear friend gifted me a challenge for Christmas as she is now a member and loving it on my recommendation). I want to share a few things. I have not missed a workout in 3 weeks. All completely virtual, and still the energy and attention from our trainers is amazing. I even felt it with the few pre-recorded videos I did. I mean, come on!!!
Also, I never stopped working out while not ‘Maxing it’- and I took trainings seriously. Outdoors, with apps, indoors with YouTube and my weights, consistently. Well, I am not in terrible shape, but I am not in MAX SHAPE!!! What a difference!!! I am working towards re-building my stamina and fitness level, and I appreciate The Max even more than before. The workouts are challenging, diverse and FUN!! (Oh, there’s a nutrition plan too! It is really awesome, easy and effective!).
I won’t be making it in the studio any time soon. I have lung issues and I literally can’t workout with a mask on, but like I’ve said, I have not missed out on quality and attention. The Max has created a seamless streaming system that combines in studio live workouts with us ‘Zoomers’ from home, and it is a testament to the outstanding commitment the trainers and leadership have to the whole Max community.
I have said it a million times- I love The Max and there is nothing like it for the quality of people and program.

Going to the Max Challenge on Montclair has been e best decision for my health! The staff and trainers are excellent and so friendly and encouraging. I walked in 40lbs heavier than I wanted to be and was very self conscious. Day one I felt welcomed and part of the Max Family 😃 Here people notice when you’re not there and reach out to support you! They also have a nutrition plan that is about clean eating and making choices. I don’t feel like I restrict as so much substitute a good choice for a bad choice. With CoVid they quickly adjusted to online on demand and outdoor classes. Once in person in center opened, they made me feel comfortable with exceptional cleaning and screening protocols. I've been a member of the MAX Challenge of Montclair for a year and a half, and I'm sad I didn't find it earlier. The staff at the MAX is extremely motivating, challenging, and encouraging. Everyone (staff & members) is friendly, and it feels more like a family than a gym. The classes are challenging, and no two classes are the same. The MAX has done an excellent job of keeping members motivated even throughout the pandemic, providing pre-recorded and ZOOM classes for those who are not comfortable taking classes in center. It’s been a long year and I can say I finally decided to get back to my health and fitness.

All virtual in my house, and still the energy and attention from the owner, manager, and trainers is amazing. I even felt it with the few recorded on demand videos I did. I mean, come on!!! It’s like being in their studio.
Also, I never stopped working out while not Maxing it- and hard. At home, and at work I get to use the peloton- and I work it hard!!! Well, I am not in terrible shape, but I am not in MAX SHAPE!!! What a difference!!! I am working towards re-building my fitness level, and I appreciate the max even more than before. I had to stop as financially it was not feasible but now that things are turning around I will do my best to continue my membership.
I won’t be making it in the studio any time soon. With my lung issues I literally can’t workout with a mask on, but like I said, I have not missed out on the same quality and attention this team gives to every person.
I have said it a million times- I love the max and there is nothing like it for the quality of people and program. I just wanted to share.

It pains me to write this review because I was a previously happy customer and have never written about a business unfavorably, but I felt compelled to share my experience.

On January 11, 2021 I returned to the MAX Challenge of Montclair after a year long break due to COVID after being assured by the manager that they had not had a single COVID case with staff or customers while being open for classes and that they were taking extra safety precautions including masks being mandatory at all times in the center. 

I attended 5 classes upon my return and noticed that during the last 2 classes that members were pulling their masks down to catch their breath and keeping them down for extended times while breathing heavy.

On January 25th, I received an email from the center that there had been a COVID outbreak in the center and they would close for 2 weeks. That day, I texted the manager and let her know I wasn't going to return but planned to return once I felt it was safe to do so and asked her to cancel my membership for February. She texted back and said that I needed to contact the owner and that they weren't accepting cancellations. I was confused because 1. I wasn't asking for a refund for January despite only attending 5 classes, and 2. I was within the 10 day timeframe they request to inform them you want to cancel your month-to-month membership. In this case it was January 25th and my billing date February 11th.

I sent the owner a nice email requested the cancellation, but
after several follow ups, my account was not cancelled and I was charged for February. I emailed the owner again asking for the charge to be reversed and confirm my membership would be cancelled and she responded by accusing me of harassing a small business, made up a lie that I called and wrote facebook threatening messages to her staff and then again ignored my request to just remedy the situation. I had to alert my bank and they reversed the charge.

On March 1st I received an email saying they cancelled my membership effective March 1st (NOT FEBRUARY 11TH!) and that I owe them the February fee + the reversal charge! Once again, I emailed the owner and asked her to correct it... several days have gone by without a response- which is why after trying to work things out, gave multiple opportunities to correct such a needless situation and refrained from sharing what was happening with anyone else, I decided to share my experience.

To this day, I still don't know whether her accusal was a blatant lie or whether other members were having the same issue and her staff did receive messages. WHY she would say or even think that I would do that... I really can't figure that out. But, I would absolutely love to hear or see those supposed messages if they exist.

This is absolutely the best program there is. I tried every diet, gimmick, fad diet, exercise program and gym out there. This program is the best by far. In ten weeks your body, lifestyle and eating habits will be amazingly transformed. The Max of Montclair is filled with educated, knowledgeable and motivating trainers and staff. I've been a challenge winner and then I had a fall (outside of the center) and broke my ankle. Once I recovered, I returned to the Max and the trainers help me to modify my exercise for my injury and I am seeing results even with modification. The experience of the Max in Upper Montclair is unlike any other exercise gym, studio or place I have joined in the past. It is a mind body experience where you challenge yourself in 10 week periods of time. The goals are attainable, measurable and all your own. The variety of classes and times in addition to the support and high fives from the crew on the mats is as encouraging as it is welcoming.
This placed changed my mind, body and life. I have not been this healthy in years. The exercise classes include a recommended nutrition plan and support if you need it. The Facebook page, secret, is a great place to ask questions, share recipes or just say WOW what a class. I swear I do not work for them or get anything for writing this review, but I will say that if you walk through the door it will be life changing !!!

The max of Montclair is the best. It anchored my day like no other regimen has. The workouts are amazing as well as flexible. You can modify as necessary. I happened to be in Lou's crew, which is quite the privilege, because Lou is also awesome. Very kind, funny, and motivating. In fact, I found all of the trainers to be very inspiring and knowledgeable. I think the fact that the classes are 45 minutes versus an hour make all the difference too. Even though the workouts are quite challenging, they're not impossible. I've never felt so good. Unlike most places in Montclair, there is plenty of parking on site. This is a huge plus! The max is pretty much perfect in every way, like gym heaven. My friend recommended the Max to me, and I'm so happy that she did. Now I'm thrilled to be a legacy member.
