I have had a very negative experience with a front desk staff member, Jaylene. She is unprofessional, rude, and unapproachable—often staring, making faces, and showing a very angry attitude. Her communication skills are poor, and she does not greet or assist people properly. Her behavior makes the gym environment uncomfortable and upsetting. I hope Retro Fitness addresses this issue, as staff attitude greatly affects anyone visiting the gym.

Professionalism is not practiced here. Some instructors need to be more careful on how they show or act when they are teaching no matter the circumstances of the situation. Their face reactions say it all. They need to be more empathetic of the gym members. Remember that no-ones perfect and no one should feel bad about themselves while taking the class. The gym members are at the gym to release stress and feel good about themselves. Not the opposite. So if you’re teaching the class, or an instructor taking a class with their co-instructor, be more discreet of what you’re saying about a gym member. This is a gym, be professionals! So keep your comments till you get home. Not during class.

Half the equipment are broken, no ac or anything sometimes a fan is out and sometimes your burning alive. Some of the mirrors are cracked, the shoulder lateral raise machine has been missing a bolt making it uneven for the past 3 years and nothing has been to change it and upstairs all the leg machines such as caf raises or leg raises are very old and make creaking noises and sometimes get stuck halfway through the rep from how old they are and I recommended to go to any other gym such as planet or even the retro at 55st

I took my first class at this gym and I was hesitant at first but the staff gave me the courage I needed to just do it. I didn’t get their names but it was a male and female at the desk. The instructor’s name is Mei and she led the spinning class. Her energy is unmatched. She is SUPER pleasant and although I wanted to quit before the class was over, her energy kept me going on the bike! She amazing. The staff is friendly. I’m glad I joined this gym.

Motto of this gym is “Parts on the way” for months at a time. Dumbbells scattered throughout the basement level, not in their proper places, free weights everywhere, people don’t clean up after themselves, never any cleaning solution available to wipe down equipment. This gym and staff instead think water alone is an antibacterial solution. There are never any paper towels available anymore to clean said gym equipment. Parking has become such an issue, especially on weekends when the Coptic church up the block has service and all their attendees park in the gym parking lot with the gym doing nothing to enforce the parking.

Ownership doesn’t care about this gym. Instead they use a portion of the downstairs under the stairs as a wood shop/storage area. Pretty unprofessional and annoying.

This used to be a decent gym. Now, not so much.

Where do I get started!! I asked your manager Brian to take out the fan for the basement. Just a little background. I have been coming to this gym when it first opened up in 2016. My answer from Brian was, when it gets hot,he will take it out of the closet. Even though I told him I was having trouble breathing and sweating really bad. There are no windows in the basement and there is no air conditioning either. You would think the least he could do was take out a lousy fan so I could feel more comfortable. Brian got annoyed at me for asking about the fan. He said that I was the onlv one that brought up this issue. I spoke to a lot of the other members and they said they told him the same thing. He just doesn't pay attention to any of the members issues. If he did pay attention, Brian would have looked at the cameras when my winter coat was stolen during Covid. I told him right away , but did not get a response. He was too busy talking to one of the female members. He is good at looking at, talking to and trying to get information about certain females in the gym . A certain person just got fired from the gym. His name was Alex and he was the cleaner. Everybody in the gym liked him. He always talked about boxing, UFC and any other sport that the gym members were interested in. He was a very kind person and did a great job in cleaning the gym. We were very lucky to have him. By the way, when a girl from the gym was being harassed right outside the gym, Alex went out there and chased the guy away.Just a little background from the guy that was fired.
Unfortunately, he didn't have a boss that looked out for his workers!!!

Think twice before making a membership here especially if your a female . The janitors a creep and likes to follow you around , don't know how he found my Facebook but he did and felt comfortable enough to message me as well Been reported multiple times and nothing has been done. Has even asked to walk my friend home . A absolute nightmare to work out around him without getting followed and watched. Be careful.

I’ve started paying close attention to these reviews for a while now. Alejandro has been reported several times throughout the last few YEARS. Seems to be that I’ve encountered multiple woman that have experienced the same type of inappropriate behavior from him. Such as interrupting you in the middle of your work outs, staring at you while you’re squatting, inserting him self in conversations that have nothing to do with him, and cat calling woman. This man will not leave you alone and will stare at you throughout the entirety of your work out and even make comments. Don’t even bother going to the manager Brian for assistance because he does nothing about it and will sweep it under the rug. Don’t go here. Don’t bother.

I feel compelled to share my experience regarding a staff member, Alejandro, who cleans equipment at this gym. His behavior has made me and several other women feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Alejandro has repeatedly catcalled women and given creepy, unsettling stares from across the gym. This kind of behavior is not only inappropriate, but it also creates a hostile environment for women trying to work out.

It’s incredibly disappointing that this issue has not been addressed, despite it being a common concern among female gym-goers. Women should feel comfortable and respected in a gym, and this behavior undermines that. I strongly urge the management to take this matter seriously and take appropriate action, including considering Alejandro's employment.

If this situation isn’t addressed, I will be forced to take further action because this is not acceptable.

Good gym if you are just looking to workout. Some machines may not work which is why it’s important to be creative and improvise. I have had many experiences with the staff good and bad, but overall they only hassle you if you make their job harder which is understandable. Overall I recommend this gym for a cheap and convenient workout , not my main gym but when I don’t have the time I come here. Not the cleanest, and definitely not the best but overall a solid 6/10. In my opinion, they could improve the cleaning standards in the lockers and the gyms equipment.

Staff are always friendly and very helpful here. This location is the cleanest, nicest looking out of the other locations in Hudson county and never too busy to get a solid workout in. There’s plenty of parking in the back, nice variety of drinks, shakes, and protein snacks. I would love to see them use filter water instead of tap for the shakes they make . Overall though, great gym and environment, highly recommend!

I've been a member for some years. Over the last year I've been going to other gyms and traveling alot. I have not gone in over a year but continued to pay.

Just know you have to show up in person or provide proof that you moved. You can sign forms digitally for the IRS but you cannot do that for a $30 membership at retro fitness.

Worst gym in New Jersey. All the machines are broken or don't work properly. The manager is the most incompetent unprofessional person. It's blatantly obvious, he has no idea how to manage a gym. When I first signed up, I thought he was the cleaner. He barely manages himself, with that horrible orange wipe on tan. He looks dirty. I would not want him making my shake or touching anything. The entire staff is completely out of shape and not one person that works there has a clue on how to use any piece of equipment properly. From 330-7pm it's packed wall to wall with high school kids who take hours and hours for one exercise. Your better off going to Hudson County Park and working out there in the rain, then stepping foot in this worthless excuse for a gym. They purposely charge more money for shakes and don't tell people. They use the same ingredients and charge more to certain people that don't know any better. Not one person on that entire staff cares about that gym, or the people who spend their hard earned money.

The staff are very kind and helpful. My trainer, John, who I have worked with for about four months, is very knowledgeable on the use of the machines and creative when designing my exercise routine. I have given a complete 5 star review for the gym , but it’s mainly due to my personal trainer Mr John who has been the most professional trainer that I have seen so far and I have been working out for 7 years . John is a person that’ll push you , motivate you and wouldn’t let you give up. He is a hard working trainer and one of the best dinamic coaches I’ve seen . My bodybuilding knowledge as well as growth after training in retro with John has skyrocketed. My friends and few others suggested me retro when I moved in and all they had to say was about how good the personal training with John is and he hasn’t proved me wrong .

An amazing experience! I work at a gym myself so when I came I was looking for similarities in job duties. The night crew made me feel like I’ve been coming to this gym for years. I love that the gym offers childcare. That was one of my main reasons for deciding to enroll. All of the staff is friendly and helpful and I am always greeted when I come in the door. They even say hi to my kids. One of the perks of my memberhip is getting to go to any Retro Fitness, but my experience has not been the same at other gyms. This Bayonne location is the best!

For starters the gym staff not welcoming at all. I used to come here 4 years ago and recently moved back to the area and so I got a guest pass to determine which gym would be the best fit for me and the initial interaction was disgusting. Employee wouldn’t even give me the guest pass because I was a former member 4 years ago and “it wasn’t my first time.”

This isn’t a good business strategy what’s so ever. Currently a member at crunch in Hoboken and the team there is AMAZING. The retro here in Bayonne is complete trash. Wouldn’t waste my time. I also work in healthcare so I know what good service looks like but more importantly cleanliness. The locker room was disgusting. We just had covid people. This made me shake my head. Horrible horrible horrible. I also don’t believe this machine should be blocking or obstructing this fire exit.

The gym can be crowded at times but very organized and clean. It usually thins out after 8pm and then you can usually use any bench or machine that you need. People do put the weights back fro the most part at this gym. They also have some Floor Fans in the free-weight area which I think is necessary because the air is really circulated and you can breath right to lift heavy weights.

My first time at this location & i wanted to potentially try out this gym since its nearby. I was standing at the counter area (no other customers but me) there was a Caucasian man behind the counter on the phone & a worker a black male on my side of the counter. Neither acknowledge my presence & when the white male gets off the phone he starts having a conversation with the co-worker about the call, still doesn’t acknowledge my presence so i did myself a favor and walked out. A place that operates on poor customer service doesnt deserve my business/money. Fyi, Gym Manager, your workers are making you lose business on potentially new customers. I wouldnt be surprised if this place permanently closes in the near future!

My friend posted a review a week ago, management responded to talk to them at the desk about the issues. Why should she when it’s all in the review/photos? There’s nothing to talk about. Fix your machines and take better care of your gym. I can’t believe after everything she wrote, the machines are still broken. Here are some more out of order/ripped machines to add to the list. No discussion needed. Fix the machines.

I have recently joined Retro Fitness Bayonne with the Ultimate membership and I am overall satisfied. For this price range you can't expect a lot, similar to Planet Fitness and other budget gyms, so my 4 star review is taking that into consideration.

They offer 3 types of memberships. The Ultimate, which I chose, is around $30 a month and allows me to take group classes and access other locations. In addition, I can bring a guest with me and the guest can also take classes. Note that there's an yearly maintenance fee of around $40 bucks if I'm not mistaken. They also have a mid tier membership which doesn't allow classes or guests and a budget 19.99 membership which you can occasionally find it for 9.99 which only allows you to access your home club and doesn't allow you to take classes. You can always pay for a class separately around 5 to 8 bucks if you have one of the low tier memberships.

The gym isn't big but it has decent equipment and the percentage of broken machines is small which is good. It does get crowded after 5pm but that's the case with the gyms in the area. Gym is clean, including the bathrooms which is good. The annoyance of people leaving stuff in the lockers without a pad lock is present so if you go during busy hours get ready to open at least 10 lockers until you find an empty one. Once again, this is a problem at other locations, I hope there was someone to check this and enforce the rules so that people can start locking their stuff.

Staff is friendly, especially Stephanie who works at the front desk and has been very helpful since day one. Unlike the nearby Twin City/Jersey City location, the Bayonne location normally updates the group class website. It would be even better if they did it at least a week or 2 in advance so that we could plan ahead but at least they do it.

There is a small parking lot behind the gym which is shared by other businesses. The gym gives you a parking pass but if you go during peak hours you will rarely find a parking spot. But there's normally street parking available, just make sure you feed the parking meter prior to 7pm.
Class instructors are also very competent. My wife takes Zumba and Body Combat classes and she likes both instructors. I take Spin class with Mei who is also a competent instructor.

Now my main complaint and the reason I took off one star. They have a single instructor for each class. For example, all 3 spinning classes are taught by the same person, so if she is off on a particular day, there is no coverage. During the month of February the instructor is off 4 days, including 2 days within the same week, so during that week we only have 1 class. The other 2 weeks there will be only 2 classes. Retro Fitness should find back up instructors and should add more classes. No spin classes on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays? There should be at least 4 classes a week but the ideal would be Mon-Thu + Sat morning.

This gym is disgusting. On Monday night I fell off the stair master because it does not stop even when paused and that night in particular it began to accelerate on its own. The incline ab machine has been missing a part for almost a year- a quick fix that has not been replaced. The mats in the yoga room are absolutely disgusting and the hand towel machines are never working or laying on the floor. The workers go on the overhead speakers saying to re-rack weights even if they were left that way to begin with. This gym is not worth $30 a month and they are taking advantage of the low income area. I will be reporting this to the Better Business Bureau and will go to LA fitness when they open.

I’ve been going to this gym for about 6 -7 months. The staff is nice but it’s impossible to talk to management. I had a wonderful trainer named Chris who was stripped away with no warning. I felt confident in his skills and built a relationship with him. I am 7 months postpartum and he respected my boundaries. I tried to call the gym the manager never called me back or the district manager. I will be canceling my training sessions in the future, hopefully they take into consideration clients concerns.

The only reason I joined Retro was for the training program they offered. This was my first time having a trainer and it was totally worth it. I've been training with Jasmine for 7 months now and she is the best and thanks to her I have learned alot about working out the right way. She is very experienced and has trained alot herself. She is so patient with me and has become an important person in life as she is my mentor. She is a trainer at the Bayonne location!

I have been going to this gym for 3 years without any issues, until it came time for me to move. I had a 1 year contract that was set to expire in June, and I confirmed in person with the staff there that my contract will not automatically renew. I was assured that there is nothing further I needed to do. In late June, I found that I was once again billed. After calling and speaking to staff, I was told that my contract is now over, and that there will be no more billing. Now at the end of July, I get an even bigger charge from this location. When calling, I was told that my contract automatically renewed monthly, and that I would have to come in to cancel (this would require a flight and hotel to get back to New jersey). I finally speak to the owner who tells me I should have read the fine print, and that he'll "allow" me to cancel through email. I have since sent an email to their location requesting my "membership" be cancelled. I have not recieved any confirmation as of yet from the owner confirming I will no longer be billed but will update if they ever decide to cancel this so called membership. Moral of the story is be sure to get in writing when they tell you there will be no more billing or else you will get swindled everytime.

This gym has potential but the management needs to get better. The air conditioner in the basement has been broken for months. It feels like a sauna down there and it smells really bad. It’s so hot the mirrors get foggy and nobody cleans them. They put a metal fan blowing hot air. I don’t know why it takes so long to fix the AC. Yesterday, I asked if the ac was fixed and the girl at the reception told me that supposedly it was fixed but she didn’t think it really was. When I went to workout, it was so hot so it was definitely NOT WORKING.

Been coming to this gym for 2 years. Had no complaints especially with the reopening after the lockdown. However that changed this winter with an influx of young kids (11-16) taking over. This is a GYM not Mall/hangout. Seriously considering ending my membership.

Why still covid hours??? Gym still closes 2 hours early on weekdays and weekends. There's no reason it should still be closing early especially on the weekends when these are not the hours people agreed to in their contract and all stores have been back to normal hours for over a year now. Very hard to make it on the weekends after work because of these earlier hours. Also, buttons on many of the treadmills don't work and some of them buckle when running on them almost causing me to almost fall several times. Why charge a maintenance fee if your not gonna fix anything? This gym was great when it first opened but the quality has gone down tremendously since then.

This place is becoming unbearable, it’s COVID and the machines are always dirty, the orange soap is diluted. Both red heads, Jennifer is a pain in the a** with the constant turning on and off the music just to announce duty she should be doing ie cleaning, and putting back the weights! The manager is no where to be found, he should address this asap it’s filthy and the workers are beyond lazy and rude.

Bayonne Been coming here for years bicycles Treadmill always broken no fixing I'm disgusted. And it's getting worse. All bicycles broken Treadmill timer minute broken. I come here to work out and go to work and it seems like I lose a lot of time because of broken machine.

I don't know what's going on with this place but I must say this it'ss $29.99 to join the gym but you must use a credit card or your banking account and it's a dollar a $2 fee for using your credit card but if you want to pay cash you had to pay $50 I told the manager I would like to pay upfront cash for 3 to 6 months he told me if I do I will have to pay $50 for each month what kind of crazy mess is this. Everyone don't use credit cards and don't like to give out the information. What is the fee for using your credit card anyway I don't understand, if someone got cash money it should be the same price shame on you Retro Fitness

Weird seeing bad reviews here. This place is great. The team is super friendly and I always see them running around to keep the place clean. They issue announcements about mask policies and social distancing. But I think people seem to forget they can't be everywhere at once and need to rely on the members to do their due diligence too. I live walking distance to the retro on city line and drive right passed it to come here because I like that much more. Seriously, great people working here, great vibes.

This is the best gym in town. Jenn and Jenn are my 2 go to ladies, they make it all the more fun! Cleanest place i’ve been too, and the equipment works for anything you need. The smoothies are amazing too

Jenny at the front counter is amazing! The BEST smoothies in New Jersey! Always a smile and a greeting when my group come in. Jennifer who keeps the gym sanitized is a hard worker and always positive!! They make us feel like we are home! Great job retro!

The redheaded girl at the front desk makes the best shakes and is so friendly... although they need to be open later than 10pm like b4 covid..both ones in JC close at 9pm.. by the time I get home from work its like one hour of gym time.. I been going to Kenilworth Retro.. open till 11p..

I recently joined Retro Fitness Bayonne and it’s been a great experience! Everything is very clean (including the restroom!), and the team ensures all health and safety protocols are being followed. I started the personal training program with Brian, the gym’s Manager, and he’s been wonderful! He truly cares about helping you reach your fitness goals. I’m lucky to work with someone like Brian. The gym is spacious and well organized, everyone seems to respect each other’s space. Leslie at the front desk is always friendly and welcoming. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere that I enjoyed working out in.

Went at 6am. Very very crowded with no regards to social distancing. No one wipes down. Some people had a mask down on their chin. Ridiculous I def will not be coming back. This place is a sweat box. Very little to no air circulation.

Pretty good gym. Can't give it above three stars because this gym doesn't have dealift platforms or round plates for deadlifting. Other than that the gym is clean and has most of the equipment you would need.

They charged me personal training for 2 months even though I had put the account on freeze and didnot refund it saying it was a fault of an employee who left Bayonne fitness last month. Who the hell is responsible for your ex-employees fault?
