The equipment is clean and maintained nicely. I like the size of this gym. Mid size, not overwhelming. The gym is very comfortable temperature wise. The giant ceiling fan does does a nice job keeping the air circulating. Had erroneous people issues here and management did a bad job reconciling them. Actually no effort at all to determine validity or circumstance and restore harmony. Critical thinking and Communication skills are lacking in this new paranoid world. I’ve picked up some southern interpersonal traits living down south for awhile, but people are not the same everywhere and there’s a big communication gap in different regions. As time passes I see the gym situations so much clearer and am grateful I’m free of all the nonsense. “Rear view mirror” “ I endured what I could not forgive”. Bless their hearts.

Walked in this morning (7/26), at 6:50am to cancel my membership. First thing this white woman behind the counter says to me is "You can't park there...that's employee parking. Says so on the wall!". No greeting, no Hello...how are you?...nothing. My reply was "Aren't you even going to ask me why I'm here?". And in a very snippy, and agitated tone, she says, "go ahead, what can I do for you?" Of course, I said "To cancel my membership". The whole time she was processing my cancellation, she said nothing else to me except to ask my name, and then say "sign right here". Whomever manages or owns this fitness center, you need to know this experience was disrespectful, embarrassing, and now you see why I cancelled my membership. She didn't even ask me why I was cancelling. Wouldn't have made a difference anyway, but at least it would have shown care and concern. Worse gym I have ever joined in my life. This is who you have representing your business. TERRIBLE!

This gym is UNSAFE. This is the second time that I have been harassed in this gym and the staff has done nothing. In this newest harassment I was in the locker room getting dressed when 2 young boys came in and were making homosexual references toward each other. I ignored them and then they started making advancements towards me. I told them that their behavior was sick and walked immediately to the front desk. The front desk claimed that they could not do anything about what goes in the locker room. That did not sound right. I then demanded to talk to the manager who took my name and number and said he would get back to me. My biggest question is why did no one from the staff go to these members, tell them their behavior was inappropriate, and just deal with it there.

Additionally, as I was filing my complaint at the front desk the members came to the front desk, identified themselves as the ones harassing me, and still no one on the staff did anything to them. This is an UNSAFE gym.

It’s fine. I’ve never had a membership with Retro before, but my first impressions of this location are 1) staff is friendly and helpful 2) the layout is cramped and chaotic— I got a quick “tour” my first day of “upper body machines here” and “lower body machines there” but it still doesn’t make sense to me 3) there aren’t enough smaller weights for beginners like myself 4) most of the machine are pretty old and run down and 5) not enough floor space— there’s nowhere to stretch comfortably. I ended up getting a membership here because of proximity. I can squeeze in a quick workout during my lunch breaks being only 5 minutes away versus the other big franchise gyms I actually prefer that are 15-20+ minutes away. It’d also be incredibly great if the hours were expanded to 5am-10pm (the next closest Retro is open until 10pm!). Opening at 6 and closing at 9 is a real disappointment. I’m paying for a full price membership for less availability. Today, I had 5 minutes left in my workout and I had no warning; the lights were turned out on me at 9pm. I’d give a better rating if this was the only thing changed!

Follow up review! Dropped to 1 star because nothing has changed. I’ll preface by saying that nothing is wrong with the staff at the front desk. I just hope all the comments they get from members daily about the terrible hours actually make it back to the owner. Unless you can workout before 2pm, this isn’t the gym for you. After then, the gym is overcrowded with kids. This crowd lingers until about 6-630pm, through peak hours. This is forcing all of the regulars for that time to start training later into the night. The gym is packed after 8pm, making it difficult for anybody to get anything done before closing at 9pm(people shouldn’t need to be squeezing in sets at close every night). As for equipment, I’ll make this specific: the hammer strength leg extension. On 11/14 it had an out of order sign, and by 11/17 it was “fixed.” Nothing gets repaired that quickly at commercial gyms, especially this gym. Seems the simple fix were wraps of electrical tape around a metal pin. That’s really safe; sounds like a potential injury/lawsuit. It might even be the same tape that’s wrapped around the tricep pressdown handles that haven’t been replaced either. I’m going to make the assumption that, if the owner of this place actually does exercise….he doesn’t do it here, because if he did this place would be much less of a dump. But hey, I guess when all you need to do is meet the expectations of kids, for a continuous flow of $20/month on mommy and daddy’s credit card, why spend any money to make your business better? I was a member for over 10 years. Bordentown was my home location but I used other locations state wide. Once gyms opened back up in oct 2020 retro Bordentown refused to Open back to normal hours. The only location to change hours. So they cut their hours cut their Amenities Without cutting their monthly rates. On top of the they harnessed members over covid Policies which they implemented Against the contract I signed with them. After countless requests to reopen at normal hours I had to cancel my membership rather then continue to pay for a gym that I can’t use.

I’ve been taking Zumba classes with Andy and I love it so much. It’s unfortunate because a lot of the time I’m the only one who shows up but I feel like the classes are so valuable. They start simple and build up from there so you really feel like you’re learning as you’re going. She explains everything well and really works out the entire body. I 100% recommended going to one of Andy’s Zumba classes

Been a Retro member for many years now so I wanted to check this one out. The gym is very clean but it's tiny inside. The building itself looks huge from the outside but when you walk inside it's very tight. The equipment is old too, most of the bars are rusting slowly, and not a huge variety of machines.

I’ve been a member for 5+ years to retro fitness of bordentown. On sept 1, 2020 gyms were allowed to be open at 25% capacity, per governor Phil Murphy. So I called this location on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 to no answer and on their voicemail it says to check their Facebook page for all updates. So I go there in person on Sept 1 and the entrance is totally blocked off. And on their Facebook page they share a post welcoming members back! So I commented that I was physically there today and their entrance it totally blocked off and when you call there is no answer. Instead of replying to my comment, they deleted my comment. The most unprofessional and lack of communication of gym management I’ve ever seen! And I plan to cancel my membership of 5+ years as soon as they communicate when they are finally open again full-time.

My home membership is Hamilton so I guess they just don't care about service when it isn't their $ so they screwed Hamilton by being unreasonable and stubborn on something that is their own incompetence.

Wish they spent nearly as much effort cleaning the moldy showers and dirty equipment as they did making sure the boss could park in his unmarked parking spot.

Attempted to try the gym using a 1 day guest pass that I received on the retro fitness website and they wouldn’t accept it.

It’s important to have some form a guest pass for gyms because users will want to know things like what equipment is offered, condition of equipment, etc, before they purchase a membership. Almost every other gym offers this service.

If it were possible to give this gym less than one star, I would. Due to physical health problems I’ve had for over a year, I stopped visiting this gym in April, 2018. I didn’t mind the fact that the monthly membership fee continued to me automatically charged to my credit card. Around July, 2018 my credit Card, LL Bean Visa was canceled by LL Bean and replaced with an LL Bean MasterCard. Nobody from the gym contacted me about my credit card being rejected, but instead they charged me late fees and penalties, which resulted in a collection agency billing me approximately $250 for about four months of missed dues. On top of that, the collection agency notified the credit bureau, which resulted in my credit score dropping at least 125 points. When I brought this to the attention of the office manager, she told me that I should have informed her of my new credit card number. Incidentally, I joined the gym in October of 2010, two months before it even opened.
In addition to destroying my sterling credit rating, which took me a lifetime to achieve, the gym is unsanitary, inasmuch the people running it refuse to put out disinfectant wipes for people to clean the equipment after they use it.

Don’t get me wrong; I love retro fitness. If you check my checkins in east Windsor, I legit go everyday, if not twice a day. I really was displeased that the closing time for this location of retro online does not match the gym closing time on their door. I came out my way; 25 minutes here since the retro in east Windsor closes at 6 & this retro says online it closes at 7 on Sundays. I got here at 0545p today. I got here at 545 & tried to open the doors but they were locked. Then I looked at the door & has a revised schedule on the door & says to close at 6 which they didn’t list online. Plus they failed to keep gym open till their door sign of 6p. That’s why the retro in north brunswick can’t be beaten cause they actually close at 7, bordentown & east Windsor blow. I close the gym for one of retros competitors and I don’t close till 5-10 mins after business operating hours. Plus if something online is posted but the gym is doing something else in person; for instance if online says baby sitting is 8a-2p and the gym closes babysitting at 1 then someone could get a manager to reopen babysitting back up till that online time.....usually management like a manager or corporate will open the item that has a different time online till the online advertised time.

I used to be a member when Bob was the morning desk guy. He left and a new management team came on and was so unhappy that I left and started going to a different gym. I've been a member of Retro for 6 or 7 years, now. I'm probably a low-maintenance client, as I pretty much do my own thing and don't do much in the way of classes or other amenities. What I have always liked is it's a no nonsense gym. They have the gear I need and clean locker rooms and showers.
I've never been made to feel self-conscious in any way. I know that's a thing for some people. You have people of all levels together and those at the beginner end of the spectrum sometimes feel uncomfortable. I don't see that here. If anything, people are encouraging. I know I try to be.
So if you're looking for a place to workout without the cliches and narcissists checking themselves out in the mirror, Retro is your place.
If I were to say anything negative, it's that it would be nice to have access to a hot tub or even a pool. I once belonged to a gym with these things and it was wonderful. But membership was like signing over your first born. Retro is inexpensive and has the essentials.

Overall, this gym is very nice. Always bright and clean, staff is generally very friendly and your fellow "body builders" are good people. During busy times, the downstairs floor is pretty packed, but you can still find things to do. I have never seen the upstairs cardio floor completely full, even when the gym is at its busiest. Monthly rate seems commensurate with the services provided and competitive with other gyms around.

I have been at this gym since it first opened years ago. It has always been a good gym. Recently the gym has gotten taken over by new management and me just liking retro fitness of bordentown turned into me loving the place. It's no longer just a "good" gym it's an amazing gym. At LA Fitness you can pay the same base price ($30/ month) but enjoy a much bigger gym, more equipment, much more friendly & professional staff, a pool, sauna, indoor track, kickboxing & spin-class rooms, and a much nicer (and cleaner) locker room/ bathrooms/ showers. Being an LA Fitness member showed me how much Retro Fitness rips you off.

Also, quitting here is impossible unless you move far enough away and can prove it. So if you're thinking about signing up, be ware.
