Worst fitness center ever. Please take care when you sign through their system at their place using their iPad, you sign for 1 year without being informed so simply you are in annual contract without signing up for that. And if you wanna cancel, you have to pay for the whole year. It is not only about money, it is also about ethics as they didnt show any respect since day 1. I stop paying for them till they reported me to credit collection which was so easy to fight as their reputation is well known.
My feedback is based on a real experience

Cautionary note: this gym does not accept free trial passes and there is literally no advertising anywhere online that this is the case. Definitely misleading as the prospective members go to this gym in anticipation of trying it out, but are told at the door that it will cost them $10. The pass you download from the website even lists the East Brunswick location.

Clean and you can get a basic job done. However equipment is not well maintained and some things are all over the place.

Best management, cleanliness, and well kept machines. Everything is the best of life fitness and hammerstrength machines which is far superior then the other cheeper machines that other gyms stock. There are closer gyms to me, like retro north Brunswick, crunch and la fitness. But none of them compare to the quality of machines, cleanliness, and how well kept of a facility that retro east Brunswick is. Yes la has more machines and is bigger but not nearly as clean kept. Yes retro north Brunswick has hammerstrength, but not nearly the vast selection of machines that the east Brunswick location has. This seemingly small gym has absolutely everything to offer.

Smaller than the Retro in North Brunswick, but East Brunswick has newer equipment and a nicer locker room. Would be nice if the atmosphere in the stretching area could be improved. It's cut off from the rest of the gym in a weird way and the silence is more eerie than relaxing. Overall, a great gym choice for the price point.

This is the worst gym ever, first let’s start with how it’s so expensive for no reason any other gym I go to me or my friends the membership there is literally 10 dollars and they have way more things than this gym has. But anyways, me and my daughter opened a month-to-month membership in September 2017. We payed the annual fee and we had sessions but couldn’t make it to any of them. I called to cancel and they said I couldn’t cancel on the phone as if someone would call and try to cancel the membership for someone else. I respected what they said I went to the place to make sure after next month they don’t renew. And they said they don’t renew automatically, they still kept taking money out of my card I didn’t even realize it and still to this day they keep taking money out. I’m not asking for my money back i respect the fact that I had a contract with them and all. But today I went to them again to cancel the membership before the new year starts 2019 and they are telling me I have to pay 53 dollars annual fee for each membership. For my membership and my daughters, BUT What I don’t get is why do I have to PAY IF IM NOT GONNA CONTINUE WITH THEM IN 2019. Other than that, the staff/owner/manger was very very very rude and disrespectful it was unbelievable. He was making of the way I speak in English because of my accent. And was very rude there was not as much clients there at the time cause it was in the morning which gave him a push to continue on being rude and disrespectful I don’t recommend this gym to anyone and I’m going to tell all my friends and everyone about what happened because this is for real terrible. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS GYM TO ANYONE.

I joined this gym because it was reasonably priced and I passed it on my way from work. Then, I moved, and it was nice being able to go to other locations. However, eventually I stopped going, and after several months of paying for membership and not using it, I decided it was time to cancel. Well, they have this ABSURD policy that you need to cancel in person. I didn't live in the area anymore so it was difficult for me to go to this specific location, but they wouldnt make an exception. Their reason? They want to make sure it is actually you that is cancelling the membership (cause so many people call gyms to cancel random people's memberships -- I am so sure thats actually a problem πŸ˜’). Anyway, I finally was able to cancel. Now I am ready to start going to the gym again, and I certainly won't join ANY retro. There is a retro and CRUNCH near my house, so I joined crunch. This is my first time at another gym, and now I realize that not only is CRUNCH CHEAPER, but that gyms don't have to smell bad just because they are a "gym". It opened my eyes to how out-of-date and dirty Retro gyms are. So glad I switched!

Never have any issues, always clean the gym housekeeper is great at what he does. Always makes sure the men’s locker room is spotless and keeps up with it. Annalise, and Greg make the best shakes I have ever tasted. Gym members are respectful, never have any issues when doing a routine. Polite and willing to work in alongside and everyone re-racks the weights when done!!!!!!!!

Good gym. I went there some years ago and liked it back then. Wanted more amenities so switched to neighboring NYSC club for the sauna and pool. Just went here again few weeks back to check them out after renovations and still like this place better for workouts than NYSC. If they at least had the sauna I would switch back but I'm spoiled now so might not do it. It's too bad because the weights and machines are better here...

Great experience so far. Never too crowded, has the standard weight equipment I expect in a gym (squat, bench, deadlift). Ok assortment of kettlebells, battle rope setup could use improvement. Clean locker room area, staff is on point with keeping the gym clean.

The new owners have completely revamped this facility. New equipment, new paint, new cleaning service , new dumbbells coming soon, and staffing changes to better improve the gym. The owners really care about customer service and are there everyday ensuring customer satisfaction. The other gyms around don’t hold a candle to this gym now. Thanks for caring and taking pride in this facility.

The gym itself is great. The manager is helpful. However, the personal trainer was judgmental, condescending, and conceited.

The trainer puts his own judgement and assumption on what he thinks the clients are doing without allowing clients to express their thoughts. The trainer is biased, puts personal opinions, shaming and labels on clients lifestyle ("dirty" not "clean" diet), does not address clients' concerns and questions appropriately, but instead getting defensive and conceited. For example, saying how much experience he's had working with various population, including people with certain medical conditions. The trainers might have the experience as trainers, but they're not doctors... so it doesn't mean that they know about the disease pathology, symptoms which they might encounter while training the clients, and how to properly handle those situations, as well as knowing the treatments and diets that doctors have allowed. In addition, one size does not fit all. One client with the same medical condition is not going to be the same as the other.

Not sure what resources the personal trainers used to back up their statements, whether scientifically or evidence based, or merely personal opinions? One trainer in the same facility said to avoid carbs and some days might not even eat carbs, one suggested eating different sources of carbs; one said to eat 1 g protein per pound of body weight, one said people don't need much of protein a day. (?)

The plans should be individualized, client-centered. Not one size fits all. Fitness goal is a personal goal, and trainers should not be insensitive and judgmental. I just think that it makes sense to put oneself in the same level with the clients, in any profession, and to understand where they're coming from, in order to better serve the clients. You don't know what the client has been through in life in terms of diet, fitness, and influences from social media, and what their prior experiences with training programs were. Thank you.

I have had a membership at this specific location for a while now. In Jan, I brought several family members here to tour the facility and sign up. They signed up because they were liked the classes offered in the gym in the mornings. It was great to take a class then go to work. Over the last 2 months, all of the classes except Yoga have stopped being offered. When my family members expressed this concern with Lynn the manager, she could not be concerned with working out a solution. There are 4 people who signed up and are not using the gym now because the classes they liked are no longer offered. Lynn's response was simply that they signed a contract and there was nothing she would do. Yes, they signed a contract based on the services offered. It's funny how the classes run during Jan, Feb, and March when they push so hard for new members, but quickly stop offering classes shortly after. Stay away from this gym. LA Fitness and Crunch are both very close and actually provide the classes they advertised. Give your money to a company which cares about their customers.

1st time here a few months back gym was packed, which isn't a problem, but no one put their stuff away. Place was a mess. I get that it's the members that don't return things to where they belong, but the staff had zero desire to enforse or ask members to put weights away. Now today I walk in and it's a steam room. Girl at desk said she's "not allowed" to turn on the AC. Whoever is the owner of this place should be embarrassed to call this gym his own. I regularly go to about 6 different retro's (owner, you can use my gmail username to confirm my membership and that what I say about using many retro's is true) and this is by far the worse. I'd rather pay $100 a month to go to planet fitness, which is only $10 a month, than come back here for free. This is the last time I come here and I hope that any potential member reconsider joining here and go to either of the other clubs on rt 18 or go to another retro, North Brunswick isn't that far

If it weren't for Lyn calling me back and working things out for me and explained everything to me I would not be correcting this review. More gyms should take This as an example. Treat people like humans not money signs that you can have talk to machines while you cash in.

I was on a business trip and needed a gym to workout with for the week. Called a couple places and everyone except for Retro was unhelpful and had no interest in helping me. Lynn from Retro Fitness was awesome. She got me hooked up with a fair solution for the week. The gym was clean, everyone was nice, and it had all the equipment that I needed. Id recommend this gym for anyone in the East Brunswick area looking for a gym!

This gym is great. I've been going to gyms regularly since 1999. This gym is clean, it has every machine you need, the people who work there are nice and most of the members have gym etiquette and put the weights away. It might be smaller than some other ones in the area but the machines are top of the line. Yes it gets busy at the peak times but still worth joining. I have been going there for years, then stopped to work at another one. When I stopped working at that other one I made sure to join Retro that night. If your looking to join a gym in the area you wont find an all around better one for price, value and everything else you might look for in a gym.

I have no idea what that guy below me is talking about. THIS E.B. Retro is THE BEST. It HAS a theater-(great movies, too!) a class room, a place to lift etc. It is VERY clean, the people are wonderful and LYNN the manager is awesome. I train here 4 days a week and it's a fantastic gym. Love EB Retro!
