I just completed my “Welcome Workout” which is included in my membership and I’ve worked with Shawn Collins the Fitness Director seen pictured.. Working with him is very rewarding because he’s truly committed to your needs. I recommend this highly if you are starting out your “Winter Arc” and get ahead of your New Year’s resolution goals. This commitment to member service was proven when I had a small issue with a late fee on my account. They were incredibly understanding, listened to my situation without hesitation, and were able to waive the fee entirely. That level of accommodation and genuine care is rare and shows they value their members beyond just a monthly payment.

Furthermore, the value is amplified by their extensive class schedule. The included classes, from cycling to HIIT, are led by motivating instructors and provide a structured, high-energy workout that complements the solo training perfectly.

In short, Retro Fitness Fairfield excels in every category. It’s a well-equipped, clean, and vibrant gym backed by a team that is always ready to help. Their willingness to address my concern personally solidified my loyalty. I couldn't recommend it more!

5 stars for Jenn & the staff!!!! Equipment is good too.
The low score is for the environment & interior design, which has become a dealbreaker for me (I detail why below). But management/staff have always been very responsive& kind!

ABOUT JENN
I met Jenn the trainer through the free 15 minute stretch appointment. After hearing her philosophy, I've been working with her as a trainer for a few months now. She has been a fantastic first trainer!!!
I always feel the intention that she puts behind each session. She has a great customized plan for everyone: for me it was core strength & alleviating my sciatica pain. She educates between sets, remembering details & pushing you to succeed. She does NOT engage in any type of aggressive shaming: instead she views exercise through a mental health lens, which is perfect. She reaches out between sessions to share uplifting messages, & encourages clients like me with ED to let her know when they've eaten.
She talks about how food is fuel, & her energy has been so supportive. .
She is the sole reason that I continued to go to this location.

EQUIPMENT
Equipment wise, there is a large array of everything. You'll find just about anything you want here.
There is no dedicated stretch area with turf though, which is a great shame since it discourages recovery. People stretch in the mirrored studio instead.

CLIENTELE
The clientele include a lot of hardcore folks, which may contribute to an intimdiating environment for new or casual gymgoers. Not a problem, just FYI.

DEALBREAKER
Unfortunately, the environment was a dealbreaker. There is an overabundance of TVs, advertising, large print posters with slogans, grey/beige walls, industrial architscture, & echoey music, all of which create a chaotic atmosphere. Mirrors on the columns cacophonously reflect TV news everywhere you look.

Unlike the Hackensack or Staten Island Retro, this one (outside of its bar) does not actually try to look 1950s-1970s. 😢
😆 These other gyms are color coordinated including tiles, striped walls, tiled bathrooms and bright red lockers.
Here, sadly, the colors/astherics are not coordinated. They apepar to have painted over the red/yellow with the very 2020s trend of biege & grey. This gives a dark modern atmosphere, which is regrettable, as the space could use some brightening up. The huge sports-themed posters on the walls are modern, incoprorating sports pics with "try harder" type slogans in sans serif fonts.
There are almost no potted plants or other joyful little details to enliven the warehouse space.
I find the TV in the dressing room especially extraneous and sound-polluting, since I have to listen to commercials while changing. There are also business cards and advertisements each time one enters the locker rooms, plus ads on the entry door. It is overwhelmingly noisy much more so than the one in Nyc (Staten Island).

The warehouse setting contributes a lot of echoing, so the metal or rap music played here is also distorted.

The biggest problem is the lack of windows. All can be abated by the addition of live plants; using red/yellow wall colors; adding live plants; pictures of calm landscapes; lessening ads; retiling the bath/locker rooms à la Retro,; and chilling out the music.
Others feel this anxiety but likely cannot verbalize it.

MASSAGE CHAIR
The massage chair is outta sight!!!💯Wish they didn't limit to 20 minutes though, and wish there was a way to just quietly go into the room and use it rather than have to tell the front.

CLASSES
I don't believe this gym offers as many classes as nearby Whippany.
I would like to request more evening dance type classes, and yoga! Most of the classes are in the morning here, and I haven't been able to reliably go to them as a result of when they are scheduled. They are also much more intense, without social and recovery stuff.

I was staying at the gym to work with Jenn but unfortunately, the stressful chaotic sensory environment has become too much. Architecture & space design is very important to me so unfortunately I've cancelled.

I’ve been going to this gym for over a year and it is pretty big and not too crowded. I also recently did some personal training with Jenn and she is very knowledgeable and a great trainer. She has been helping me get a lot more efficient, I’d definitely recommend her!!

I've had a great experience with my trainer at Retro, Jenn. She is extremely knowledgeable and supportive. She is there to build your confidence, help you get stronger, or whatever health/fitness goals are most important to you. I could not have started my fitness journey without her. I went to the Fairfield location 5 months ago to cancel my account, yet they continued charging me every month. Recently, they called demanding a payment. When I questioned what payment they were referring to, they said it was for monthly charges. I explained that I had canceled my account months earlier and even provided the exact date. I asked them to review their cameras for proof, but they refused. Instead, they told me I had to pay first or they would send the bill to collections.

This is unacceptable and shows the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced at the Fairfield location. If you plan to cancel your account, make sure you record everything on the spot—otherwise, they may deny it later and try to hold you responsible for charges you don’t owe.

Returned to the gym first day they reopened from the COVID19 lock down and it was great to see Paula and the new morning crew. I was and am overwhelmed how the owner and staff have provided what I feel is a very safe/clean environment to work out. I was apprehensive about returning but they have really come through with addressing any concerns I had. A sincere thank you, I missed Retro big time, it is great getting back, working out and feeling safe working out. Great spacing of equipment, mask wearing and social distancing. It’s a disgusting throw up of colors that don’t go well together and the owner walks around working out all day instead of tending to need like people not re racking weights or holding the staff accountable for that instead if he didn’t want to do it. He sits in his office which is a mess and adds to the dis organization feel of the gym and he and the office both smell.

He dresses completely unprofessionally for an owner and as someone coming in as a guest with my friend for a few weeks now I would without a doubt say my membership at Equinox Gym is by far superior to the mess that Retro fitness is. I’m not sure if this is like a brand wide thing or just this location but for this location at least I was un impressed these last few weeks.

I justed signed up and returned to retro after a 10 year absence. I like the size and and all the equipment options. The disappointing and one of the main reasons I left before is the rude members that refuse to re-rack their weights. Not just one but several plates. The staff really needs to more to prevent this. Some my said I am just a Karen, but today for example hammer smith chest press had a 25 first, 2 45’s and than 25, user just walked away. Why?

I have been at this gym's location since it was Powerhouse in the 90's...even competed out of that gym. I have been here through all of the name changes and owners. Retro came in and kept this spacious gym alive, and added their signature colors and all of the perks that come with the Retro franchise. The owner Mike cares about his members and their feedback, and can even be seen working out when he is "off duty," which adds a nice personal touch to the location. Go Retro!

me and my boyfriend have been going to this gym recently and we went last night til almost closing. while i was in the girls locker room, my boyfriend was at the juice bar @10:22 waiting to order protein smoothies, no one was behind the juice bar. we didn’t know the bar closed @10:30, anyways my boyfriend waited about 20 minutes to order drinks. i had to call the gym 3x to grab the workers attention and he still didn’t come out. my first call was @10:36 my last one was @10:38, 3 minutes after a hispanic guy low haircut came out of nowhere @10:42 saying the “bar is closed” and had the nerve to catch an attitude when he was in the wrong. my boyfriend was waiting since 10:22. personally i think the worker should not leave behind the counter til 10:30 when the bar is actually closed. FYI we weren’t the only ones waiting, there was another guy waiting much longer than we were. please train your workers better and have a better attitude.

I love EVERYTHING about retro Fairfield!!! It starts from the minute you walk in, all the of staff is there to greet you and they do with big smiles.
Car keys get hung right across from them at the desk which is also nice to know. I’ve been a to few gyms and they get hung out of sight of employees.
You will constantly see an employee cleaning and reracking weights/cable attachments. They always have great music playing and keep the gym at a pretty warm temperature, which in my opinion is the way to go if you want to sweat and burn calories! There is plenty of room even at peak hours. Locker rooms are also very kept up with and clean!!
You will always see mike, the owner, walking around and high fiving all of the gym goers!!!

It goes without saying that I will be calling this gym my home for a long time to come!!!

I have been to a bunch of gyms, but this Retro continues to be my go to for many reasons. The owner Mike cares, so he keeps the gym clean, and if a machine breaks, he gets it repaired as soon as possible. He also keeps on members to put their weighs back (if you can lift them, put them back). It's also a nice size gym, so even at peak hours, there are still plenty of benches and whatnot. He also has different promotions going on frequently. I highly recommend!

I had originally given Retro Fitness of Fairfield 5 stars but after having been a member for over a year and the experience I had yesterday, I have to bring it down to 2 stars. I normally bring my wife with me as a guest and she checks in every single time we go. Yesterday, the front desk seemed a bit busy and as we were waiting to sign her in, one of the attendants told her she was good to go inside without checking in. She was surprised and double checked she heard him correctly and he told her again she was good. As we were walking towards the locker room the owner stopped us and asked if we had checked in. He seemed angry and did this in a way that seemed as if he was trying to talk down to us. We said that I scanned in and that my wife was allowed through. He then proceeded to take us back to the front and asked my wife which worker let her through. Not wanting to get anyone in trouble she told him she couldn’t remember, although she knew exactly which worker it was. He then proceeded to ask one of the front desk workers (not the one who told her she could go through) if it was him to which he responded no. He then proceeded to stare angrily at my wife and passive aggressively tells her that she must sign in every time and it does not matter if the workers are busy we must wait. My wife became visibly upset and uncomfortable with the way he was speaking to her. Given that he is the owner we expected him to have more respect and better customer service towards his loyal members.

I have been going to this gym for almost 6 years. Ita semi clean. They can actually hire someone to clean equipments everyday because it gets dusty and ppl with allergies like myself finds difficult to workout.
What I like a out this gym is, its big and multiple equipment so we don't need to wait in line for any equipment.
They have classroom as well if you like and a separate room to workout circuits if interested.
It's close to me ans familiar so I keep going back again.

Retro fulfills all my personal fitness needs. Between the cardiovascular machines, weight machines, and free weights I have been able to design and execute thorough workouts. Being an ex PE teacher, coach, and athlete I am able to find all I need isolate what I need to work on and go through my workout in a efficient time frame. I find the facility inviting, client friendly, and clean - and the friendliness of the staff is professional and pleasant.

My only area of concern is how other people are not as courteous as I would expect in their treatment of the equipment, re-racking after use,
wiping down equipment after use, and being considerate of amount of time on equipment when others are waiting.

Switched my home retro to come here because of a previous experience and got my routine down here with everything they offer. But, don't get too comfortable because for months of doing the same similar routines. Thank you this mornings Sunday kid for the eye opening experience. You get new time restrictions on things included in your membership that they boast on. I joined retro fitness for the new year because they had a decent membership plan. After creating the membership, I ran into some problems with money and realized I had too many financial responsibilities and couldn’t end up affording the membership. I cancelled before the end of the 3 day policy and was told I would NOT face any penalties or charges. The employees at retro were very kind about the situation after i explained it to them and cancelled the membership for me and didn’t give me a hard time. I was very thankful for that. I was planning on paying for the membership again once I was more stable. It’s been almost a week since I cancelled it and out of no where the owner/manager Mike called me on my personal cellphone and proceeded to hassle me about why I cancelled my membership. I didn’t want to provide personal information to him and said I didn’t feel comfortable disclosing much, and just told him it was money related. His response was to badger me about all of the memberships benefits and that I could’ve given away my membership for free, which I wasn’t told when I originally cancelled. I explained to him I didn’t have anyone to give the membership too and that I was okay with just cancelling it. He proceeded to pry more into my financial and life problems and wouldn’t let the conversation end. I ended up growing frustrated with him and becoming stern with him over the phone and his response was to explode and be extremely rude to. I yelled at him and hung up the phone. I didn’t want to continue the conversation since he was being so rude from the beginning. Then, he decided to call me once more and proceeded to offer me a job in order to pay for the membership, to which I told him I already had a job, just too many financial things to deal with. He kept screaming at me over the phone until I finally hung up on him a second time. This is incredibly unprofessional for a business to do to its possible customers. I would have reinstated my membership at a different time once I had more money but now I will never visit a retro fitness again. I am also going to be calling their corporate office to speak with someone over his behavior. I am appalled that a business would call someone after cancelling a membership and demand an explanation for why they couldn’t afford it .. why care? You have many other clients willing to pay a monthly fee for your gym how money hungry can you possibly get with a single potential customer? Then to try & offer employment just so they could afford to go to the gym. Mike seems like a very disrespectful man and I can see why so many people cancel their Retro Fitness memberships.

I've been to a few different gyms but haven't found one with an owner so caring about the gym and its members like Mike is at Retro. He holds member appreciation days every so often and I usually see him putting equipment away that's been left out by members. It's always nice to see a business owner so appreciative and supportive of everyone there.

There's also a ton of equipment to use in the gym. Definitely recommend Retro in Fairfield.

The gym itself is great. it’s really big and has a good variety of equipment. I like the owner Mike. He even reached out to see why I ended my membership after years of patronage.

The front desk staff doesnt know their own billing policies. The membership here is more expensive than surrounding retro locations. I would recommend signing up at a different location to get a lower monthly membership fee and then you can go to all the retro locations. I got sick and couldn’t come in person to cancel my membership and missed the cancellation window. I was hoping they would be able to work with me due to the circumstances but they did not.

I have been a member of a lot of gyms before... including other Retro Fitness locations. This gym is easily the best. So much equipment, a positive atmosphere where everyone is super friendly but also takes their training seriously. The occasional wait for equipment at peak times, but nothing compared to other gyms. Quick story, a couple times I noticed the dumbell section had been crowded for a few days in a row... within a week there was an entire new dumbell rack and new benches to spread out the area and meet demand. The entire gym was realigned to fix a problem that I would have considered a minor inconvenience. Just shows the commitment this location has to being the best it can be! Zen Den is also the best before or after a workout!

I've been a member for almost 10 years. This is honestly the best gym around. More than ample equipment, everything is well-maintained and clean. After the quarantine we never needed to make an appointment to workout. The movie room is great. The staff and Mike the owner are the best.

Only complaint is for them to keep the AC lower, sometimes it’s just too hot to work out as hard as I’d like to. :(
Jogging for 10 minutes dripping wet sometimes. when I know I don’t usually break into a sweat like that until I’m at least 25 minutes in, makes it difficult to go hard on some days

I recently had the unfortunate misadventure of joining Retro Fitness, which was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. This gym has proven to be utterly incapable of handling even the simplest of issues, leaving me frustrated and disheartened with their utter lack of competence and customer service. If you value your time, money, and sanity, avoid this disastrous gym.

The first sign of trouble was during the signup process. The staff seemed untrained and clueless about their membership packages, leading to misinformation and confusion. It took me multiple attempts and a considerable amount of wasted time before I could even get a clear answer about the membership fees and terms.

The final straw came when I decided to terminate my membership due to the numerous issues. Trying to cancel my membership was like solving a riddle without any clues. The front desk staff seemed to be in a constant state of disarray, and no one knew the proper procedures for cancellation. I was transferred from one person to another, only with no resolution. I was even charged for an extra month after my supposed cancellation date!

In conclusion, my experience with Retro Fitness in FAIRFIELD has been nothing short of a disaster. From the incompetent staff to the lack of equipment maintenance and complete disregard for member safety, this gym has proven to be an absolute nightmare. I strongly advise everyone to stay far away from this gym if you value your time, money, and sanity. There are far better options with staff who know how to handle issues and genuinely care about their members' well-being.

I needed to cancel my teenagers membership. I was so pleasantly surprised at how nice the management team was and how they handled it. Long story short they went beyond excellent customer service!

Fantastic customer service. All employees are very kind and always greet you with a smile. Owner Mike is amazing, I always see him keeping the place clean and picking up weights, he has a genuine love for the place and you just love to see it! Excellent location. The front desk staff are knowledgeable and kind. The owner makes himself available. There's constantly a trainer on the floor that helps with form correction and staff is always available to answer questions. This is an extraordinarily clean location for a retro fitness. This is a much larger location than the norm. It offers incredible equipment, many options for classes with amazing instructors. I would highly recommend.

Retro fitness in Fairfield NJ is a fantastic gym. Highly recommended. The owner, Michael truly cares about his customers. For example, I stopped going after Covid but I kept on paying my monthly dues. Michael called and emailed me to get me motivated again. I thank him for that.
The staff are all nice and friendly.
The client's are helpful and courteous.
Plenty of machines, free weights and treadmills etc. And last, but must be said, the gym is kept very clean. Machines are kept sanitized and well maintained.
Definitely come in and see for yourself.

I've been going to Retro Fairfield since 11/2018 and I really like the place, the management and the hard working staff; but the other day I somehow lost my iWatch there. The next day I used the tracking feature and sure enough it was at Retro. So I called and Laurel told me another member had turned it in and someone on the Retro staff gave it to the owner. The next day I went in and he gave me watch. A lot of people handled that watch and any one of them could have....but instead EVERYONE was honest for which I am grateful.....and in these strange times we live in....it definitely restored my faith in my community. THANKS TO ALL THAT HELPED ! Much Appreciated !

New to the gym this month, came over from another gym because I wanted more equipment to use. It definitely does have this and love it for that. I technically don’t go during prime hours since I’m usually done with work before noon, so it’s never hard to find a piece of equipment. Cleanliness is one of the best I’ve seen in a gym. organization with weights is another story, I don’t blame the gym for this all, the patrons should be playing their part. I honestly do my best and you will see me at times restacking weights myself, even if I didn’t use them. I do see some of the staff on their off time using the facilities and by all means they should, but you tend to see some of them being guilty of just throwing weights back anywhere. Some of the machines could use a little TLC but ultimately I’m happy with the equipment selection, which is why I joined. I keep to myself but when I have encountered other patrons everyone seems to be cool. Most of the staff seems pleasant, others could be more friendly but not really worried about that. Update: My husband and I are now members for 3-4 years & are extremely impressed! We love this gym! When you log in you are greeted by "enjoy your workout" & yesterday, a surprise "happy birthday" ! There's red & yellow decor, and friendly people at the front desk making smoothies...a free one as a birthday treat. It is "owner operated" and this gym is treated with the care you would give to your own home! It is friendly, clean, modern, well equipped and carefully maintained.. The equipment is plentiful; each has a personal TV. All of this makes for a
pleasurable workout. Classes are plentiful, and a new machine massage room (although at an additional monthly fee.)
We love the atmosphere and after a great workout, what could be nicer than a shower with marble walls and a pebble stone floor!

There was an error with my son's cancellation, and he was charged for over 1 year. When I told the owner, Michael Marinaccio, he immediately said he would look into it and correct the error.
