I am truly sad to write this review. I have been a retro fitness member for 14 years and this location for 3 of those. I do love the low price, but unfortunately, this is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. The gym has gone downhill significantly and egregiously. Machines are broken. The place is dirty. It’s overcrowded. Several months ago they had a Watermain break that caused them to shut down for basically an entire month. I was thinking they would give us a refund on our membership. That was not the case. I switched to Golds Gym (now Powerhouse) and tried to cancel my membership in person. They sent me to an email address. It took a few attempts and an email to corporate to finally get it processed. I was a loyal member for a decade and a half but retro just isn’t what it used to be. Sadly.

Well equipped gym, best in the area for the price. Just upgraded a lot of equipment within the last month. Only gripe is it could be a bit better cleaned - equipment and floors dusted/vacuumed/swept/mopped.
That said the entire building it is in has just been deemed unsafe for human occupancy. Police came and shut all businesses in this building down and placed UCC (NJ uniform construction code) stickers on all doors of all businesses. I frankly feel bad for the owner who has dealt with issues with this building, a flood from broken water pipe just about a year ago that had the gym closed for an extended amount of time and now this.
Hope to get a reply to this for an update about what will be happening.
Update 10/8/25:
The bad:
many of the treadmills are on their last miles, some don’t work, the whole lot of them are due for replacement. And something REALLY needs to be done about the AC. I honestly don’t think it even works. The one water fountain in the whole gym died again. There needs to be notices posted about keeping rubber weights with the platforms, no idea why I’m finding rubber plates on the other side of the gym on bench presses. The one loan platform needs a weight tree right next to it so it’s actually used. Cleaning could still be improved, the only thing I ever see getting cleaned is the front entrance area and I come different parts of the day depending on the day.
The good: the ab room is a nice addition since my last update.

Half the machines don't work, the bathroom is questionable, some homeless person is chillin by the dumpster. And some how its so difficult to cancel membership - you know how I know, I tried to do it, and now my bank will be dealing with the dispute of this terrible gym since the manager is NEVER there and no one knows what the hell is going on. Those bad reviews previously are real and this gym is not worth staying and probably pays for good reviews on Upwork or Fiverr. Barely been there a month as an out of towner and saw all the red flags to cancel my membership ASAP. Go down the road to Planet Fitness in Watchung or better yet do to the small gym in Dunellen across the street from the gas station.

Please stay away from this Retro if possible, they make it almost impossible to cancel your membership. I’ve literally been trying for the past five months to cancel my membership with no luck.
When you call in or try to cancel in person, they refer you to an email. I’ve emailed them back in January, followed up in February with no response for either. It’s not worth the hassle, clearly the owner is doing this on purpose.

Horrible gym with people who work there no nothing about the fitness industry or how to run a gym properly. If you are an individual who trains hard with intensity and is focused in your training this gym is not for you at all. This place is filled with kids and people who frown upon people actually trying to train consistently and correctly with intensity. If you ever make the slightest sound in your sets trying to move big weight they will tell you to be quiet. I’m sorry but this is a GYM and if you’re training hard and correctly you will make noise . I never in my life been treated this way in a gym before just trying to train. Will be contacting corporate to complain about this location .

I have been a member here for almost a year there is no sauna and the tanning bed has never worked since I have been here and I just asked an employee if it will ever be fixed and he immediately responded “I don’t think so” I will be cancelling my membership and jointing planet fitness. The gym is poorly managed and run it shows, the club had closed dude to flooding. They didn’t allow me to freeze my membership (never even replied to my email).
It’s dirty, the equipment is always broken and the staff always says they’re working on yet nothing gets fixed.
I’ve worked in the Fitness for over 10 years (specifically the sales and finance of them) and if one of my clubs looked like this I would be mortified. This gym is either on the verge of bankruptcy or just collecting your membership fees.
It’s not about over head costs but that will be his blame as to why there’s still mud on the floor, missing sheet rock and mold all over.

Every week the stair masters don’t work . They refuse to just replace them . Instead people at the desk will say they’re “waiting on parts.” Please just replace for goodness sake and stop trying to do patch jobs. Not sure what my monthly fee is going towards because it ain’t going into customer satisfaction and gym equipment obviously. Please don’t respond with a “I’m sorry for how you feel” but provide no real plan of action.

I was charged an extra 54.68 randomly after already paying the 52.25 annual rate fee & had a friend turned away after learning that this Retro Fitness apparently doesn't participate in free day passes.
After asking Michael & then the manager Sandy, they said they'd forward my information to owner who would contact me about the charge but never did. I'm requesting to cancel to today and ideally my membership gets cancelled quickly as to not end up like one of the reviewers here who claim to have emailed for several months about cancelling.

All I can say is for power racks and rubber plates at this price, idk many places you can get it. Appreciate the many years I was a member.
Weights are torn to shreds on the isolation machines and old squat racks. BUT there's an amazing little area with rubber plates, squat racks, and plenty of room to deadlift.

Edit: Still a terrible facility and shady owner. But for anyone curious, Term #3 in your contract states that you are due a refund if the facility is closed for longer than 30 days.
Very disappointed at my recent interactions with this establishment and the owner. As some of you know, they have been dealing with flooding since early December. While I empathize with them, they have also charged me twice while the club has been closed. They have ignored multiple emails, phone calls, and requests to cancel my membership. I called the billing company, and the billing company said that the only way to cancel is to go to the club in person. That's great - but how am I supposed to do that when the club has been closed?
I'm at my wits end trying to get this leech of a human to stop taking my $30 every month. I would not recommend this gym to anyone.

This is a shady gym run by Jarred LaCosta and is scamming people. The only way to cancel a membership is by emailing this shady owner Jarred LaCosta (red flag) and he doesn't intentionally respond for months to keep billing fraudulently for months. Up until recently I've had no issues. Been a member for almost 2 years. Recently the gym has been closed for almost 2 weeks. I understand there was a water main break and that can't be helped. My issue is the lack of communication on the reopening. There has been only one email to members and nothing since. There have been no updates on Facebook or Instagram. Even though members can use other locations, for the time being, it may not be inconvenient for some to do that. I would rectify this or when and if the gym reopens, there may be less members.

Honestly I want to like this gym, but it just isn’t good at all.
The opening time is never correct. Supposedly they open at 6AM on Saturday? Well I’ve been here for 30 minutes and they still are not open. There are 5 other people waiting with me.
It smells bad throughout the entire gym every time I go. I actually wonder if they ever clean it at all.
I usually go to Edison and definitely prefer it over this gym even though they don’t have nearly as much equipment. The only reason I was going here was because they opened earlier today. Guess not.
Worst part is that there are employees inside and there’s a light on. They just aren’t answering the phone or opening the door.
I definitely would never recommend this gym and the ONLY reason it got a second star is because it has more equipment than the surrounding Retro.
As I’m typing this one of the people waiting left. I’m about to as well so I can go to Edison when they open. Just go there, it’s better.

Honestly it's just not a great gym, and it's never been, but it does get the job done. I've been going for 5+ years, and while it is the cheapest in the area, there's a reason for that. Very inconvenient hours (closes at 6 on weekends??) Anytime fitness all across the country somehow manages to keep their locations open 24 hours, without any staff, by just allowing members to scan in. The machines are often broken, though that has recently gotten a bit better. There is no hot water in the showers, which are in rough shape in general and never clean. That said, the other gym goers are usually pretty nice. Can't say I'd recommend for anything other than the price and if it happens to be close to you

It’s very easy to become a member here, but make sure you would like to stay here because once you’re here, it’ll be very hard to cancel your membership.
You have to request a cancellation though a email to a supposed “Owner” who will never answer you! And if you change your card, you’ll be send to collection.
I’ve been trying to cancel it for 3 months, I’ve sent several email and I haven’t get any response. I called and they told me to re send the email and call back another day.
They charge you for all they needs, and if they make a mistake on the charge they won’t do anything to refund it.
Very irresponsible by that part.
Jarred if you see this, do your job. Check out my mails. And please don’t tell me to do the same thing I’ve been doing, contact you through emails and calls 😐.

I've been a Retro member since 2017 and have been coming to this location since 2020. For my needs, this gym meets most expectations, is a quality experience, and the price can't be beat. Excellent variety of equipment, a good number of cages, racks, and benches keep wait times low, if at all, and the staff is always friendly. I've been to physically bigger Retros that have managed to fit less into their gym - they done a nice job making the most out of the space afforded to them.
I like to avoid going at peak hours if I can help it, but when I have been there at those hours everyone seems to have an idea to keep the action moving and be respectful of each others time. Also if you hate the retro branded hexagonal plates as much as I do, this location does not have them! A huge bonus!
The equipment is certainly used, but on the whole well maintained and rarely out of order. If it is, the equipment is ready to use quickly. Having been to other gyms that have had an out of order sign hanging for months, this is appreciated and should not go unnoticed.

Would love to understand how you are supposed to cancel your membership with this place. My son moved to Minnesota in August. He walked in with a signed letter as per policy in August and since has emailed several times (as has my husband) to have them stop taking out membership payments, but they continue to do this. HVAC either doesn’t work or they are too cheap to turn it on.
Half the machines are broken.
What do the people even do there? They stand at the counter but you scan yourself in and they barely even respond when you say hi.
Save your money. This is a terrible example for the brand and really needs an overhaul.

Been going here for years. Was not my home gym originally. Convenient location for me and usually go at off peak times. Jared is cool and sociable with the patrons. Survived the pandemic and reopened when most other Retros shut down indefinitely. Just too hot sometimes, need to get those fans going on high speed and all working. Just a thought, but some signs listing GYM etiquette should be posted. There are many there that have zero gym etiquette. Sitting on machines looking at phones while waiting. Worst one is ONE person taking up Two machines at once. NOT COOL at ANY time.

They told me I can not cancel my membership online or over the phone, that I must go there in person. I tried explaining I can’t do that because I now live over an hour away from the gym, I am taking care of my parents. They simple just started to ignore me. Bathrooms reek of urine and there is puddles of it on the floor that nobody bothers to clean. Half the barbells are bent which makes them awkward to hold. Half the barbell weights don’t have the metal lining in them, so they barely slide onto the barbell. Over crowded even late night/ early morning and not enough squat racks to accommodate the demand for them. Just turned an absolute dump, surprised this place isn’t disenfranchised. Go to crunch right across the street for a better gym for the same price or $5 more...

Got transferred to the Raritan Retro after Manville closed down - but decided to try this location because I just wasn’t feeling the Raritan one. I already like this location much more than the other two - there is a ton of equipment, staff is friendly, and the gym is clean with wipes almost always available to use. Only downside is that it can get REALLY hot in the gym when there are a lot of people there, but other than that I usually never have to wait to use equipment even at peak times and everyone seems respectful of everyone else while working out.

I have been at the Greenbrook Retro Fitness for nine years now. Jarred is the person that makes the difference there. He always helps resolve any renewal issues I encounter. The staff is friendly and courteous and the members are respectful and friendly as well. I always look forward to my next workout. I suggested a senior citizens day to acknowledge the senior citizens that attend the gym. It's something that could bring more senior citizens to the gym and would be greatly appreciated.

Pre-pandemic, one of the instructors tried to start a polyamorous relationship with my much younger sister and made us feel uncomfortable to return. This facility also sent me a threatening email “by mistake,” after my contract ended, stating they would take legal action against me if I didn’t reenroll due to missed payment. Facility is good & clean but I don’t think their staff is worth the headache.

Recently my husband went to Piscataway Gym and realized it was closed. No one informed us and he was told we are transferred to Green Brook. I called to cancel. I was given an email address to email someone named Karina and was able to help me. She says she will take care of the cancellation. And It was cancelled. Karina was very helpful and on my last billing statement I see it is indeed cancelled. Thanks Karina.

Interesting how this company works. Time to group together.
If you read the bottom of the email about the transfer it says if you did not request a transfer then your membership will automatically be canceled. So first they send an email saying that they’re going to cancel everyone’s membership that was from Piscataway and then they sent an email an hour later saying that they transferred my membership, but I never requested a transfer and when I called to inquire about it the staff member said she doesn’t know the ins and outs of what’s going on, but that they’re transferring everyone From Piscataway to Greenbrook which is against everything they have in their email and in their fine print.
The girl that answered the phone asked for my name, so if I find out that they transferred my membership without my authorization thinking that my inquiry and telling them that I’m not driving to Greenbrook because that’s further away from where I actually live (40 minutes), there is going to be legal action.

I love the atmosphere. I wish it was a little cooler but being an older building I understand. Also wish they had some med balls too! I only go to two Retros depending on the workout. One of the top reasons I go to this Retro is that the front desk is always great friendly and helpful. You go to other Retros and you're lucky if someone musters a hello or hi. I think going to a friendly and well run gym is important.

I love the way the team members at the front desk know who I am. They make me feel welcome when I come in and to look forward to coming back. In addition, I work with a personal trainer. Very disappointed with this gym, I was a member for over 10 years and moved out of NJ gave them my notice to cancel, even tho there was no contract months later retro sends my account to collection and threatening to report to the credit bureaus now I received a credit karma notification that indeed there was something reported and stained my credit. Very disappointed how they are conducting business.
Don’t do business here!!! So upset with you retro staining my credit for no reason. No contract!!! You just wanted to collect money!!!

Gym facility and equipment are surprisingly good for the price. This was a Gold' s Gym originally until Retro took over in late 2012. I will admit that I didn't care for the gym in the beginning...it took some time to get used to the new place after being at Gold's for so long. Since then, I have changed my views and have come to like the gym quite a bit. They have done a very good job with the facility and have added some nice improvements.
Very spacious inside with a good all around selection of machines and free weights, and the equipment is arranged sensibly for the most part. They do a good job maintaining the machines when things break. They added a separate cushioned workout area with astroturf for free weights and other activities which was a nice addition.
It can get very crowded weekday evenings after 6 pm or so. I prefer coming in the mornings and afternoons and weekends are good too. Over the summer months it was often too oppressively hot to workout. I spent more time toweling off sweat than anything else. The average member here is not a wrestler trying to make weight. The mens locker room and especially the shower stalls often have a funky smell.
I caught a horrible bout of athletes foot here. Despite the demerits, this is still a good gym. Its the best Retro I've been to so far. Tried the Manville gym and didn't like it at all. They need to work on keeping the showers more sanitary and keeping the gym at a reasonable temp. in the hot weather.

This is a follow up to the original review. This continues to be a good gym overall especially for the cost. They seem to be doing a better job with keeping the Men's locker room cleaner. A few problems still remain...it is almost always inexcusably hot and uncomfortable at night since the warmer weather began. No air flow except for the ceiling fans, and they're not enough unless you want to stand under one all night. Guys, how about a little A/C??
I always prefer going in the mornings...much more comfortable no matter what the outside temp. and far less crowded. I've upgraded their rating to four stars because its a good gym and I enjoy going there.

Just want to thank the management for acknowledging my reviews. This is a very good gym with a well thought out floor plan. I've noticed over time that there has been very little or no turnover among the staff, which tells me that they must enjoy working there.

This is my latest and probably last follow up to my previous reviews on Retro in Green Brook. I felt that they deserved additional recognition for continuing to be a leading gym in the area, and for addressing certain issues that have been a concern. The free weight plates that had been an eyesore with deteriorating rubber coatings have been replaced with new ones...a vast improvement.
I really can't add much to the other positives I outlined in my previous reports. I have been to other Retro gyms, but none have been as comfortable to me as this one. Retro gyms seem to be everywhere now, but they are not all the same. Some gyms just have the right feel and atmosphere, and to me, this gym has that. This is a great place to work out with an excellent staff on hand. I haven't used their personal trainers, but they all seem to be outstanding people.

Equipment is always clean and is being cleaned. Dave does a great job managing many aspects of the place. Dave and trainer Justin have been extremely helpful, providing instruction and advice that is challenging, yet in line with my current state, abilities, etc. I have made good progress. Justin has been very conscious of my hearing impairment and has gone out of his way to signal to me rep counts, next steps and instructions, etc. Justin also takes great care to ensure that exercises are done correctly to both maximize effect and minimize injury. All the trainers are helpful and willing to provide advice.
