She waited until it was time for members to make their next monthly payment and without even telling her employees or loyal members, closed down the gym. She pocketed everyone’s money and took off. Be careful of Retro Fitness. They all keep shutting down the gyms.

My Kenvil club closed with no warning. I showed up and there was a sign on the door. I was automatically transferred to the Mt Olive club, which is too far for me. I tried canceling over the phone, I couldn’t. I had to come into the club. What an inconvenience. Oct 14th, my bank was charged. I tried calling to have it reimbursed. Kenvil owner said she didn’t get the payment. Mt. Olive said that there’s nothing they can due. I went up there today to cancel (11/10/25), the shitty manager said, oh well your November payment is pending so she can’t pull it back. Too late. But it’s supposed to be paid out on the 14th and you can’t cancel it??? She said: no. Try calling my credit card company and put a stop payment. This is bad business. I too run a business and if a customer is not getting a service, I would never attempt to take their money. This is dishonest and cruel; especially in this tough economy. I see that there are several other people with the same complaint. And shitty manager, save your robo “I’m sorry” response because you’re not! I hope others read this and cancel too!

Staff member super unprofessional. My retro closed down and my account was automatically switched to this one , I called to cancel because it’s over an hour from me and the guy was being extremely rude said I had to go in person and proceeded to continue to say see you then when I asked why that was the case. I called back and another employee answered and she was wonderful and told me how to do it. And shocker I did not have to go in person. Either he’s lazy or this is a bad business model.

The Retro Fitness in Kenvil shut their doors with no notice. Membership was transferred here. Unfortunately it’s a little too far and class schedule doesn’t fit but they handled the cancellation professionally.

The gym itself is solid, But I had a strange experience with the morning staff that really threw me off. While training with my uncle, a young employee stopped me mid-workout and started questioning me, accusing me of personal training without approval.

I wasn’t training anyone—we were just working out together. The way it was handled felt more like an interrogation than a conversation. If you plan on coming here with a friend or family member, be careful,apparently, that’s enough to get accused of breaking the rules.

I worked out here while visiting the area. The one-day pass was affordable, staff was nice, facility and equipment were clean, and they have a good smoothie bar. I prefer it to Planet Fitness (where I am a member) because it has more free weights, squat racks, and a sauna and if they had one in my area I would switch memberships.

Dominick was so friendly and inviting. He great us a great tour of the gym. There is alot of equipment, a sauna, and massage chairs. The facilities are very clean. They offer training and classes as well. Membership prices ranged from $25-40 (2025).

Be cautious about what your salesperson tells you regarding offers and promotions. My pricing increased by $5-$7 after I was transferred from the salesperson to the membership desk. They added additional fees for disclosure. Ultimately, I decided to cancel everything at that moment.

I rated the gym a 4 out of 5 due to the lack of equipment. I understand that space limitations might make it difficult to add more machines, but I wanted to share a list of equipment I wish you had:
• Wide-grip incline T-bar row
• Lying machine chest press
• Machine bent-arm chest fly
• Seated machine pullover
• Lever seated row machine
• Lat machine pull-down
• Seated machine back extensions
• Machine lateral raise
• Hammer Strength seated dips
• Machine triceps dips

I’m so glad I left this establishment. I witnessed people throwing cars full of garbage in the parking lot/woods and reported it to the staff. They did nothing. The sauna issue is till present but that’s obvious if you read any other reviews. They have continued to charge me after I moved and cancelled my membership. Honestly happy that I moved. Years ago this place was fine but the new owner is not present and unethical.

Just canceled my membership. I wasn't going to leave this review until I saw someone else review with the same issue. It is absurd to allow a couple to work out together with a baby in a stroller where other gymgoers are trying to walk or work out, and diaper bags and gym bags spread across the floor. Not only is it incredibly unsafe and questionable common sense for staff to allow this, but the couple working put with their baby is incredibly rude, full of dirty looks and will occupy each machine forever. I assume they're friends with a manager or owner to get away with this. Nothing else would make sense. Gave Roxbury a chance before canceling and that place is an absolute dump. Fitness factory is way nicer for the same price without any nonsense.

I requested for a pause for 3 months in my membership in October but the payment went through in November. I had to call up a few times just to get my money back. Manager Sarah apologized and returned the money. Come December the payment has gone through again and there is no response to my calls now. Sarah has not returned my calls since December 26. If the owner reads this, can you please return my money?
Edit: guess what went through again in the month of January and that too three days earlier?
Edit 2- I have gotten my membership cancelled and got an email confirming the same. But they are still charging my account and no one is returning my calls or emails now. Manager Sarah has not bothered to return my call or respond to my emails and it’s been more than 3 days

I came here because my friend was out of money to repay his membership at a previous gym. I walked into the gym and immediately I saw the large scale and exemplary equipment that this gym contains. I also heard the music that played was far superior to that of any gym I had previously seen. To my surprise, I got a day free at the gym because I had never been there before. After my workout I felt more sore than I had in months and all of the machines were very comfortable and adjustable. In conclusion, my experience at this gym was a 10/10, I am thinking of switching gyms after my experience.

Absentee owner. Managers sporadically available to deal with member concerns. When concerns are brought to them you're only given excuses not results.

Corporate doesn't hold owners accountable. This is an issue. Owners can do or not do whatever they want and corporate only cares about selling more franchises.

Equipment fairly maintained except saunas. In the last 5 weeks 3 times I haven't been able to use a service I've paid for because it wasn't turned on or heat level maintained. Who wants to wait an hour or two to use a sauna?
I've been given a bunch of excuses but it really hasn't been consistent or corrected. If you pay for a services you expect the service to be available or compensated because it wasn't. Nope, nothing. Not even acknowledged.

Go elsewhere.

I agree with some of the comments on here about being rude (Not my first experience with people being rude). I called a week ago and asked if my son could come with me and was told no there are certain ages (my son is 12). I go to cancel my membership at retro the girl Sarah asked me why I was canceling and I explained she said our rules have changed and I told her it was the week before I called about my son (all he wanted was to do treadmill) and then she canceled my membership and for the last few weeks we have it she wrote son can come with in the notes. So why once I cancel my son can come with me but when I’m paying he can’t? I wrote back to her asking and she ignored my question and told me it was in the process of being canceled. Very upsetting, rude, and unprofessional. I really don’t appreciate Sarah not answering me as to why and how the rules changed. If someone with professionalism could call me and explain that would be great.

I went today and quite frankly this was the best Retro I’ve ever been too. I’ve worked out at a few different locations West New York, Secaucus both no longer exist, Rego Park(Queens), Wallington, Kenilworth and now this location. The use of space, the cleanliness, and the way the machines are set up just a great gym. Definitely would recommend for anyone who lives in the area or is close enough to make this gym their gym.

You can do it for the rockaway gym, the kenvil gym, pretty much all the other retros in that radius of north jersey. Don’t get why mt olive is different. The staff has always been very kind, and greets me every time I walk through the door. However, due to a minor misunderstanding, I was signed up for a membership that I was told would be cheaper for me, but was not. This was okay, as I am sure the staff member didn’t intend to do so and was just misinformed. However, trying to contact the manager to resolve the issue took nearly two weeks with at least three emails that were not responded to, as well as several phone call attempts to reach her. Once I was finally refunded and asked to come in to set up a new membership, I explained that I was not in town (which was the reason I couldn’t come in to resolve the issue in the first place). Sarah, the manager, sent me a very passive aggressive email and accused me of misrepresenting the situation, which I did not appreciate especially since I have been kind and patient with her unresponsiveness. Looking back at her first response email, she was not professional enough to proofread her email either. I usually do not write reviews, but I feel that this situation truly tested my patience, and my kindness was met with aggression and lack of professionalism. Though I wish I did not have to come to this Retro in particular due to this experience, I will still attend due to their clean facilities and remaining kind staff members.

It's an average gym. That means all the annoying things that come with an average gym.

In order to cancel your membership it's not enough to call or even visit in person. They require you to give them a letter that you're canceling. You can't even send it via email. The manager won't even come out. They hide behind their front desk people. I am very disappointed. I thought this gym would be more honest with their members.

EDIT in response to the owner's comment: That doesn't make sense. If there wasn't a manager then the front desk person should have told us that instead of going to the back when we asked to see a manager. They then returned to tell us our only option was to send in a letter to cancel.

Either way none of this matters, and it's hardly worth the time or money. You are completely in your right to use the contract to make canceling from your gym as difficult as you want. I just want to share this experience so that others can understand what it's like to try to exit a relationship with your gym. In short, it sucks.

Overall a nice place to workout but if your a remote member they treat you like dirt on the bottom of your shoe basically the one day I forgot my membership card and at other locations they can call your home gym and they get your membership ID the lady manager with the short haircut I was talking to told me call them myself and walked away right in the middle of me talking completely un professional my suggestion is if you are a remote member don’t go to this place

I have been going to this gym since they have opened , and not only is it by far the best gym in town it’s the best gym I have ever joined. The faculty , the layout , the cleanliness of the gym is absolutely amazing. The trainers are by far the best !!! Mindy does an amazing job teaching cardio kickboxing, I look forward to her classes every week. If you need help modifying she is there helping you with a huge smile on her face . But she pushes you to the limit in a good way. No matter if you’re a pro, a beginner , gym rat or shy... Everyone at this gym makes you feel welcome. Thank you Retro !

This is not my home gym, have stopped in several times when in the area . Let me say they have done a great job here. The equipment is excellent, layout is great. Plenty of machines , squat racks , cardio equipment. Have been there during peak and off peak times, always room to workout.

I personally have enjoyed my membership at Retro Mt Olive since it opened in October. On the other hand, my daughter and her boyfriend were approached and basically told not to come back unless they change their membership because they signed up at the Kenvil location. I thought Retro memberships included the use of other locations. They were approached by an owner in the middle of their workout, not before or after. Very distasteful in my opinion.

The owners of this retro must have put a lot of time into the design of this facility. It is by far, the best Retro i’ve been to and I have been to a lot of them. It has the best equipment and it is super clean.
It is also equipped to accommodate any type of workout you’re looking for.
I definitely recommend this gym to anyone looking for a good gym and a great atmosphere to work out in..

I was very impressed with this facility! It’s large and the staff is very nice! The childcare room is spacious and my daughter enjoys going as well! They offer a variety of classes, and great equipment. This gym has exceeded my expectations! Keep it up👍🏻

Signed up for a free pass online, with the intention of switching gyms specifically because Retro offers childcare (Big perk as a single mother). Got to the gym with my son and was told "Your pass doesnt include childcare". And was sent on my way.

Thanks Retro, would have been great to know that before I got mine and my sons things together and made the dissapointing and pointless trip to your location.

My 1st day at the gym and it was worth the wait. It's the most beautiful retro I've ever seen. Big and open and lots of windows with natural light. Took barre class today and Madelyn killed me, a good kill lol. Child care room is a great size and Corinne is so sweet. I can't wait to try everything else out!!
