I heard it’s closed, looks like reopened. I asked them to cancel many times but they never did and after closing gym sent my remaining membership cost to recovery agent. Worst place I will never go any retro again.

Retro Woodbridge is the worse. New management all the time. The equipment is outdated and half of the treadmills are broken and no one does anything about it. It's very frustrating. Plz help and fixed the equipment. Thanks.

Worse Retro. Half of the equipment never works and always dirty. And ever since Covid they haven’t reopened childcare yet my membership will not be discounted when I pay more to have childcare. Without childcare I can barely make it so here’s goes the long process to cancel this useless membership.

I have been a member for almost two years, and this gym is going downhill. Most of the equipment is broken or in bad shape. If you love to do leg, good luck finding equipment. There is only one squad rack and one leg press machine. A lot of the members love to do supersets, grabbing a lot of the equipment and sometimes not even putting it back.

The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the staff is really friendly.

the quality of this retro location has deteriorated significantly over the past few months - so much so that had to cancel our membership here & go elsewhere. the people that work there are great & the atmosphere is good as well, but SO much equipment is broken (and not repaired in months.. & doesn’t seem like it ever will be). the gym is down to one squat rack (which at any given time 3+ people are waiting for), only one stairmaster, one smith smith machine, & half of the plates are missing rubber with fully exposed metal. so unfortunate! we have been going to different retros for years, this locations seems very neglected.

Overall good vibes, great staff, but management really should take care of the broken equipment. Mostly their treadmills are broken. Squat machine was broken and never came back from repair department. Gym has minimum number of weight plates. When there’s more people during peak hours, it’s hard to find plates. They only have 2 washrooms and out of those 1 is always broken. Mostly locker drawers are broken. No maintenance at all. :(

I joined the gym in 2017 as at first the gym was great, but as time went on equipment would break down and it would go unrepaired and more and more machines would be broken, and this is not a low traffic gym by any means, leading to sometimes going and not being able to use some equipment because there are so few left working.

The worst though is when cancelling your membership, which you can't cancel online, though you can sign-up online for a membership like I did, even following their website and reaching out to their financial company they will tell you that Retro won't allow them to de-activate their account, which is Retro's choice, none of the emails on their site get a response and their phones barely work and they fight with you over cancelling your membership.

If this is the only gym near you then I guess it is better than nothing, but I caution anyone that has any expectations for a gym to get a membership here.

This is by far one of the best Retro fitnesses I’ve been too. It really shines above the other franchise locations. My favorite part is the fact that the gym and locker rooms are always cleaned. The weights and dumbbells are always organized as well. The front desk staff is helpful and well informed when it comes to making their shakes. I feel that the only thing holding back this gym is the ownership, but I have to say that staff and management are so exceptional that this location is worth the 5 stars I’m giving it.

I live 45 minutes away from this specific location and have a Retro Fitness 3 minutes away from my house but everyday I chose to drive to this specific one and a lot of that has to do with the staff! I usually go to the Retro in Kenilworth. I came to Woodbridge to take care of my mom in the hospital. It’s been such a rough time. I came Wednesday evening and I was greeted with a big smile from a young gentleman with dreadlocks. When I got a smoothie a different gentleman with glasses helped me, he was so sweet and asked me how I was and I was a little too honest but he listened to me. This isn’t the biggest gym but I’ve never been treated so kindly by any other staff! Highly recommend!

You would think that being they charge people a maintenance fee included with the membership, they would get the broken treadmills & other machines repaired. It's ridiculous how that gym is left to the public. Broken equipment, dirty bathrooms, I'd love to see what their homes look like. Oh & don't even let me go there about the useless staff sitting there behind the counter playing on the phone while all that is going on.

Like any other retro, the facilities are good. I like the abs stretching section, performance training center etc. lots of weights and other items in performance center . Wish they have more boxing bags like other centers. Overall liked the facilities there . Just few bench presses.. wish they have more … it’s tough to get one in peak time.

Also, they don’t sell small protein shakes . In all other retros we get small shakes for 4.50$. They tried to push me a 7.50 $ large shake , but it was expensive than other centers .. I hope they can sell the small sized shakes.

Parking is tight ! Otherwise , It’s ok overall

I had to cancel my membership early due to the fact my cancer had started to give me problems again. I spoke to the manager (a woman) she, did infact apologize about my situation and told me that I had to sign the cancelation forms and all would be taken care of. Fast forward to today I get a email from my credit company stating I have a 390$ balance from retro fitness in collections. The location is closed and no way to get in contact with this business. I call the locations number and the phone just rings. Confused on my next step.

I’m a big fan of Retro Fitness- they have all the equipment I need to get fit and feel great. To me the overall value in terms of price is unbeatable. On the evenings and weekends when I go I’ve never had trouble finding a treadmill.
They have a friendly staff and I really appreciate that they don’t price gauge on the bottled water. I’m knocking down a star though because at this location compared to others, there are always more treadmills and ellipticals that are out of service. Once I was running on the treadmill and suddenly the belt stopped and the machine died, and I had to hop off mid-run. Not sure if it’s an issue of upkeep or the treadmills are of lesser quality. But they should do a better job inspecting their machines to avoid potentially dangerous situations.

My Son Sean was a faithful member for along time. Sean joined the US Navy & the Navy called him in for Bootcamp ealier than expected, this mean't no time for anything he had to pack & go, before he left he called up Retro they said he had to write a letter in order to stop his membership so we all know being in Bootcamp you have no contact with anybody & when you get out the Military keeps you hopping, my son has been in there since September he is going to Submarine school, Submariners have alot more schooling than other Navy guys, most nights my son gets like 2 hours sleep so finally after 8 months my son found a minute to write to Retro, he sent it to me i went down there with his letter & also a letter explaining why he couldn't write to them so if they could please give him back all that money since he had no way of writing to them, the girl at the desk said it would be up to the owner & they would call me, well no phone calls. So my son is in the Military & will be getting deployed anyday now to fight for our country & this is the way Retro treats him. Well there is so many other gyms out there when he gets out of the service we sure will not be going to Retro anymore.

I've been a member for over ten years now, it used to be a great place to work out but the music has become so gosh darn awful that I cut my workout short today because I couldn't stand the acoustics in the room. The music station is not tuned in properly and it just sounds like a lot of noise, I asked other members who were around me and they agreed. When I asked the guy behind the desk for the name of the manager he said "it won't make a difference anyway, they will not do anything to change the music". I would have to agree with him because I wrote to the corporate office a few months ago about the music and never received a response. So I guess it's time I find another gym where the owners actually care about the feedback from their long time members.

Not only the worst Retro but also the worst gym I have ever been too, and corporate needs to either close it down or kick the owners out.

Place hasn't been cleaned in who knows how long. Trying to find weights in here is literally "like finding gold" is the saying everyone in here uses, and the weights you do find are ripped to shreds or falling apart. they added a fancy new crossfit room with brand new equipment and weights stacked to the ceiling, but you aren't allowed to use the weights unless you pay MORE per month. Tanning booth barely ever works.

Owners have completely abandoned the place and you couldn't pay me to believe that corporate has ever done a walk through the place. This gym compared to the one in Edison is night and day. Retro fitness has no standards

I avoid this Retro when possible and use the immaculately-maintained Whippany location instead.
The Woodbridge location's locker room is horrible: half or more of the lockers' locking latches weren't installed properly when they 'updated' the locker room which renders them unsecure and useless if you care about what you're putting in them.
Forget about the showers: they're gross and ill-maintained with regard to cleanliness.
There are two special elliptical/climb machines at the end of the row of regular elliptical machines and one of them, despite my multiple mentions/requests to have fixed, remain unable to accommodate a workout setting off more than 20 minutes.
There feeling is that members' concerns just don't matter.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Amazing gym and trainers especially Danielle and Andre. They are the reason I join STRONG membership. I can’t give enough stars to both of them. Always motivating and helping fellow trainees. To be honest, I dont know why this gym has only 3 stars. The gym is amazing and have the best equipments in this area. I have been to many gyms including Crunch, LA fitness & Planet fitness but RETRO beats them hands down. Retro has amazing classes and schedules. Their class schedules suits everyone whether it’s morning or evening or weekday or weekend.
I have been working with Danielle and Andre for only 1 month and I already started to see results. The group classes are so helpful and trainers are always committed to your cause. And the best part of all this amazing experience is the membership fees in very low as compared to all other gyms.

I highly recommend everyone to try this gym and check for yourself. 😊

Facility is extremely crowded. Equipment is constantly broken. Paper towel dispensers / spray bottles are not maintained and as a result the equipment is not wiped down.
During the busiest time of the day almost half the gym is blocked off so that 5-7 people can attend a class. Rest of the visitors are left without a place to stretch or use a roller. Not enough plates as many of them are delaminating and are not replaced.
Men’s locker room is a disaster. Majority of the doors are broken or do not lock. I would suggest leaving valuables in your car. Toilets are either overflowing or are out of order.
Staff smoking sigs outside the entry doors.
Made some great friends at the gym, sad to be leaving but I’ve had enough.

My boyfriend has been hospitalized since October 2017 with a rare disease and when I called with regard to cancellation I was told there was no alternative but to come in person and cancel his membership. When I finally got the chance to go in person I was told he had to pay his past due bill which was past due by 2 days in order to cancel. I refused being that the only option I was given was to come in person and after a brief argument they agreed to cancel it without payment. Two days after the membership cancellation they charged his bank account anyway!!! I then called back and they "lost" the letter from the hospital explaining his illness, etc. I had to speak to the manager who allowed me to fax it over because I had already been there and was told that a reimbursement would be made to his card in 3-10 business days. That was back in December. It is now January 5, 2018 and after noticing the reimbursement was never issued I called to follow up. I was just told that it was "put in today". How insanely ridiculous. First, you demand an in person cancellation from a person who is paralyzed and hospitalized, charge his account after the cancellation, and then take a month to even put in the request for reimbursement. I am disgusted that I have also reached out to corporate and they have yet to respond. We will never recommend this company.

I tell ya something... this place is my playground!! I have so much fun here that I don't wanna move out of Woodbridge just because I want to stay in this Gym. The Zumba instructors have sooooo much energy and their classes are like in no other place I've been before, super spacious and it has a big training zone where I can do whatever the heck I come with because they have great equipment! Woodbridge Retro is definitely the best!

I live out of state just come to Jersey for work and stay here mon-fri. I went to the gym hopping I could become a member but they told me "no" because they need a state ID in order to do so. that's very ridiculous!! If you will be a paying customer what does it matter where your license is from??

Before joining I read the reviews here and found that several people faced billing issues (especially after you withdraw your membership) but I thought to take a chance as this place was right across the street from where I lived.

HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE.. They literally robbed me of $800. I cancelled my membership because I was moving to a different city. When I asked them for proof of cancellation they told me that i will get one in my mail and email. Weeks passed by and I never got any email or mail. Then every month for 3 months they continued charging me 250 for PT and $20 gym membership until I filed for a dispute with my bank after which they stopped. I called them several times for the refund but the receptionist would never let me talk to the managers (manager Jennifer and Jesus). I filed for dispute with my credit card company. My bank asked for cancellation proof - which I didn't have - because retro lied to me that they will send me the document in email / mail so ultimately I had to swallow it and pay.

Beware of financial transactions here.

Very poor management.

I go to this place in the early mornings and I never had any problem with machines being unavailable. Plenty of machines that can really rip your muscles. Friendly staff and crowds. Clean lockers. Sufficient weights and huge area for group fitness or some power excersizes in peace. Got a nice smoothie bar to rejuvenate. I love this place.

The new changes are for the better. More barbells and better maintenance of the equipment. The gym is decent with 2 squat racks and a bunch of benches and a training area for boxers and the like...all for a decent price.

My time at Retro has been interesting, to say the least. I started at the beginning of last summer and I enjoyed my time there until the Fall when the gym went through a little management problem. The former manager, Jenny, treated her staff as her own children and treated members with respect and decency. She had compassion and understood that life wasn't fair, so she took that attitude while dealing with each and every single one of the members that had a problem. The current manager, Terrin, is quite the opposite. When he replaced Jenny in the Fall, there were a lot of promises that never seemed to come true. His focus is to clean up the gym and he took such pride that the gym was clean during the hours he was there. He had no problem barking orders at his staff to replace bottles and paper towel rolls, even fired someone for forgetting once. Terrin's worst flaw is his dealing with accountability. There were times he would come back to the front desk after circling the floor and tell me that there were water bottles and paper towels all over and that I should go pick them up.I would sometimes sit there and look at him in amazement because he would tell me such nonsense at 5 pm on a Friday when I was working by myself and when the juice bar had 3 people waiting for shakes and two smart members waiting at the front desk to cancel their memberships.

ISo to the people who have gotten this far in the review, you can obviously see that I am completely biased against Terrin. Everything above is the truth which is why it's so negative. I can go on and on and recall my memory for every immoral and indecent thing that Terrin has done to myself, my former employees, the members, and even our trainers, but he's not worth it. A guy like this puts himself and his reputation on such a high pedestal even though the only thing holding up his shitty qualities is his over inflated ego which is why I'm not wasting my time on his pathetic self.

So, the reason why I am no longer at Retro Fitness. After opening the gym for months, I decided that I wanted to work the prime hours (Late afternoon-early night) so that I could be more involved with gym itself as well as selling memberships, which would eventually lead to me making more money. After 6 long weeks, I was finally told that I was no longer responsible for opening the gym, however, management refused to give me any other hours. I insisted on fixing the problem with haste, however, that word serves no purpose to these people. I only had to stay longer after an employee meeting and argue with upper management for an hour until we could figure out a way to put me in the schedule for about 25 hours a week. This lasted for a couple weeks until recently I was totally taken off the schedule without reason. I was sent home multiple times after sitting in an hour of traffic and no one could send me a courtesy text or call telling me I wasn't needed. I understood that schedules change and some people lose a couple hours here and there, but when you take an employee who has been "employee of the month" multiple times as well as someone who was at the top of the boards in selling shakes, memberships, and pro shop goods completely off the schedule, one must think that he is being fired. I was told I wasn't needed ten times, Monday through Friday for two straight weeks until I finally decided enough was enough.

First, I want to thank all of the members who I became friends with. From the early morning group to the afternoon, to the night, thank you for getting to know me, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to get to know you. I want to thank my fellow employees for always making time go by a little bit faster. I also need to thank the trainers who were always there to joke around and give great advice. I also want to thank everyone in the Wellness Center who always keep it 100.

And don't take too much stock in the previous 5-star reviews, Terrin gives members free pre-workout as a bribe if they write a 5 star review in front of him.

This Gym was good until a Manager named "Terrin" (tall black man with short curly hair) took over management of it. I'm only describing him incase i got his name wrong. I joined because they had a decent boxing area and because my cousin worked out here. He had brought me here so we could work out together doing some boxing work. I even got my sister-in-law and brother to join this gym and we worked out here for about 3 years with not many problems regarding staff or other paying customers. I would hold the boxing pads for family helping them get in shape and they would do the same for me except for my sister in who didn't know or liked holding the pads. I also would meet up with some friends (guys and girls) who liked boxing and liked hitting the pads or the heavy bag once in awhile. Then this guy Terrin took over management and my first encounter with him I was immediately questioned and pretty much harassed for "training" with my Cousin and brother that day. Thats right I was HARASSED. I was approached on 2 separate days in the same week! First I was questioned by Terrin and the Lead trainer there for working out with my family and friends. They ask me to go into the office so we could "talk". I responded with "is it that serious?". Terrin stepped in and was friendly at first, basically saying that, "they are not trying to lose money from trainers who aren't affiliated with the company he hires to come in and train people in this gym." First of all I am in NO WAY a Certified trainer nor do I advertise, claim or want to be. I was simply just simply working out with my family. Its was fun and we liked working out and helping/motivating each other to get in shape. They even offered me a job because they had customers asking about boxing apparently but I declined right away because I just wouldn't want to train random people and also I work a fulltime and partime job and wouldn't have time to workout for myself. I also told him that I'm just working out with my family who was my brother and cousin that day. A couple days later I came in with my cousin and sister-in-law and a friend happened to be there. I wanted to hold the pads for my sister and friend first before my cousin held the pads for me so I worked with them first. Upon seeing this Terrin waved me over. He didn't look happy so I asked what going on? He said he was "INSULTED" for "training 2 new people". Again I am not a trainer. He was very unprofessional with his approach. I told him that was my sister-in-law and friend. He responded with "I only had PERMISSION to train my brother and cousin." I needed permission?!?! At this point I pretty much had enough of Terrin harassing me for working out with my family and friends and said I was canceling my contract there today. NEVER EVER have I had to deal with this at any gym. Its one with thing to fix your staff to make your gym better but never do you harass the paying customers. I highly recommend you DO NOT join this gym. The policy is just plain ridiculous if you want to workout with people and I talked to some of my gym buddies before I left and they also had problems with Terrin questioning working out with their wives, girlfriends and their friends! My Sister-in-law and brother also cancelled there contracts. Save your money and look for another gym where you aren't looking over your shoulder and questioned for working out with people you know. 11/30/14

They have a nice setup. That's about it. This Retro is extremely overcrowded and mostly by people who look like they just got out of jail. I feel more like I have to worry about getting into a fight than working on my physique. My car was broken into in the parking lot (around 8:30 AM mind you) and I have heard about this happening to other members there too. I brought my wife there one time and she felt so uncomfortable she never went back. I have since moved to a Retro in another area which is less crowded and not as dangerous and I am happy there. Retro in Woodbridge is probably the worst Retro I have ever gone to and I will never go back there.

I love Retro Gyms. i look to see where they are on Google, to check out different ones. This was the only Retro that was a turn-off. Much of the equipment was ripped and dirty. The air quality was poor. It was possibly the most crowded and noisy gym i've ever been to. Since they have plenty of members, if not way too many, i'll suggest to anyone reading this to check out the Retros in Edison, Sayreville, Kenilworth, Clark, E. Brunswick. Not that i've been to any of these, but Retro Fitness in general is the most awesome gym. Just not the Iselin one.

A DEFINITE NO. DO NOT make a stupid mistake. Of course, if you have no dignity /self respect or don't care being given any importance whatsoever - go right ahead. But, read their terms and conditions, make sure you understand them and if it doesn't feel right, just don't join. After all, its YOUR MONEY !!

I was evaluating my options as to what would be a good place to start exercising again - and Retro of Woodbridge being very close to where I live - I thought of checking it out. I had read about mistreatment of customers and how the front desk folks are only interested in your money, their cancellation policy etc. I'm usually the kind of person who reads reviews - but would gladly write a good one if I had a better experience. But this Retro of Woodbridge lives up to its bad reputation, I agree with most of the other reviewers who have given thumbs down to this place.

Here's my experience: I turned up at the place some time around 11 a.m on a Sunday - the place looked well equipped (probably too equipped for the floor space) and fairly crowded. I don't have a problem with crowds - being from India I guess that's an advantage. I pretended I didn't know anything about the place and asked the front desk rep. Firstly she looked too tired to answer any questions - and she had absolutely NO interest in what I wanted to know or even achieve at the place. I was the one asking all the questions and it was as if I was talking to a stoned robot that had speech recognition issues. She made no effort to tell me anything other than mumbling something when I asked if I'd meet a trainer when I signed up. The only thing she cared to tell me was the signing up fees - around 84 bucks including first month's due and 21 bucks thereafter each month. Thankfully I had read about their cancellation policy. I read and re-read their terms and conditions. She didn't even bother to stay near (in case I had questions) while I filled up the form on a console facing away from the front desk. I couldn't believe the policy - it clearly says 'membership is absolutely non-cancelable' - i.e, unless you are seriously injured (read handicapped) or move to a place that is not within 25 miles of a Retro Fitness center. Even then, you have to bring a doctor's certificate saying that you are medically unfit to exercise or proof of address of your new location that its not within 25 miles of a Retro center. This essentially means that you CANNOT, I repeat CANNOT, cancel your membership just because YOU want to. You have to spend your precious time and money convincing these losers that you DON'T want to go there anymore !! Imagine that! Firstly, you are the one who's going to pay - and yet you have no control of when you want to cancel. How ridiculous is that ! I was so tempted to join due to the low price and proximity to my home - but something didn't feel right. I would've really liked a little more attention and at least a patient hearing of what I needed. After all, I just wanted to exercise in peace and maybe asked for a trainer since I had a break from gym for a couple of years in between and needed some guidance. So, to cut a long story short : a) I was surprised to see lack of any interest in the customer other than signing them up as quickly as possible, b) no explanation of facilities or features, c) slightly crowded , d) parking shouldn't be a problem if you go at the odd hours e) horrible and absolutely ridiculous cancellation policy and, as an afterthought - not so clean either. I wish Google review had a quality rating of less than poor. This place deserves that. I'd gladly pay 20 - 30 bucks more for a little more care. Thanks to other reviewers, and my own experience, I was saved from making a bad decision of joining Retro. I don't know about other Retros, but the Woodbridge one is a definite no-no for anyone who'd ask me for advice. It wasn't right for me. Maybe they'll change their policies if enough people complain.
