After my first week training at this gym, I’m impressed by a few things. I like their set up, everything is evenly spaced. Their music is poppin. They have active workers cleaning the gym. The DB section can get a little tight but people respect your space. Their staff is friendly & welcoming. If they can improve in one area it would be to enforce re racking of weights. I often see DBs & barbells laying around in random areas. Today someone used DBs & just left them in the floor. It’s rude to others who are training. I lead by example & re rack any DBs in my general area. For those watching me do it, it encourages them to do the same. Aside from that, I really like this gym & look forward to my personal growth here.

I have contacted Retro Fitness in Hudson Mall several times to make inquiries about their classes. No one picks up the phone. I left a voice message as well. I've even gone there in person and stood at the desk and walked to what looked like an office and no employee to be found. Just discouraging.

I really wanted to give this gym more but too many issues. Firstly, this is a well equipped gym with a friendly staff. I went twice - but I would not have done that if I had known some things. So, when you go online you can get a free pass and the pictures of this gym looked pretty neat so I wanted to check it out. You put in your info and then they send you a notification that you get 3 free days to try it out. So, I took my message to the front desk and the guy was super friendly, and let me in, no worries.

Locker room is good. Gym is spacious, lots of equipment. Lots of variations for movements and mechanical tension so you can work different RoM and muscles. One of my issues was plates and weights not being in the right place, not being put up, and not being conveniently located and available. When I went some of the other gym goers had like two racks taken up to lift and film, and they had so many plates stacked over there. I needed more plates and had to walk across the gym to get some laying on the ground. Those gym goers were super nice but taking up that much space and that many plates (for multiple pieces of equipment) is kind of off-putting.

First session was good so I decided to come back for my second free day. I showed the guy at the front and he laughed at me and said “we don’t do that.” He then told another guy about it, the other guy was the same guy as the day before, he explained that the online website keeps sending those out but at their location they don’t do that and haven’t done that for a while. He told me it was $15 for a day - but offered to reduce the price - I didn’t have an issue paying so I just paid the full amount. He was really nice but that was annoying. To come to that location, I had to take the train from my hotel then walk twenty minutes.

Second lift was similar to the first. People leaving equipment wherever and people taking up a lot of space for their workout. The bench area is big but doesn’t feel big with the way everything is crammed in there.

Overall good enough gym; but not a base gym for me.

First off let me start by saying that the staff is very friendly and helpful at this Retro location. I joined retro fitness around 2021 and was happy to get back to the gym after Covid. At first everything was good at this location and well kept. Over time I started noticing things like weights missing, the same equipment keeps breaking down and basic things like handles can never be found. There is only 2 sets, 1 is metal and 1 uneven fabric set, meaning one is longer than the other. I'm saying this because there is multiple equipment the requires handles to be used and you have to be on the hunt or wait just to get a hold of them. A question I also have is alot of gym goers that attend Retro mentioned that they use to be open until 10pm but changed their time to 9pm once Covid happened. Now it is 2025 and no one is able to tell me why they haven't returned to their old time. If little things could be fixed and adjusted this location could be 1 of the best.

This is the 4th time I show up at 6am and the gym is NOT OPEN! I'm currently waiting with 14 other ppl for someone to open! This is not only an inconvenience it's UNPROFESSIONAL! You might as well say open whenever someone feels like showing up. This has me seriously looking to find somewhere else to go. Wasting 15-20 minutes out of my hour workout has me beyond annoyed and upset.

Came to the gym to workout today. Started my workout at 6:20am. Next thing I know they are closing at 7:15am because the person who was suppose to open didn’t come. The person that opened works there but it wasn’t his shift and he had to leave. Waited until 8am to see if anyone comes but nobody showed up. This not acceptable.

This gym is literally a fraud. I cancelled my membership and I still get charged even though I was told cancellation was successful. Sometimes there’s random people that don’t work there pretend to work at the check in counter telling you to pay $100 to get it cancelled, that happened to me recently! Be careful with this fraud gym.

Requieres a bank account to sign up. Huge red flag.

Edit: Requiring a bank statement is not standard procedure. It’s so they can fraudulently bill you when you cancel because Debit transactions are much harder to stop than credit. Extremely shady and unethical business practice.

This could be a great gym. It is big, good location and plenty of parking. It really needs to be better managed. They are always late to open and don’t even care when they show up. Equipment is not maintained, cleaned or timely fixed when broken. Weights are never re-stacked. There is always trash and water bottles on the floor. The men’s room urinal has been broken for months wrapped in plastic with an out of order sign. Tanning booth has been out of order for years with an unsatisfactory health department certificate posted on it. Obviously the owner and the manager don’t care about the member’s experience. They used to open at 5 am during the week which was great to get a workout in before work but they changed to 6 am so I got Planet Fitness membership for week days. Planet Fitness is open on time, clean, maintains equipment. Retro needs to really take a hard look at its operations. Stop investing in unnecessary new treadmills and fix your dysfunctions.

Oh, where do I even begin with Retro Fitness in Jersey City? If I could give them zero stars, I would, but unfortunately, that's not an option. This place is a shining example of how NOT to run a gym.

First of all, let's talk about their customer service. I've had better conversations with a brick wall than with the employees at Retro Fitness. It's like they go through a rigorous training program on how to be as unhelpful and rude as possible. You ask them a simple question, and they look at you like you just asked for the meaning of life. And good luck getting them to crack a smile – it's as if they have a strict policy against showing any form of human emotion.

But the real cherry on top of this disaster sundae is trying to cancel your membership. I swear, it's easier to break out of Alcatraz than it is to cancel a membership at Retro Fitness Jersey City. They make you jump through more hoops than a circus tiger. You have to fill out forms in triplicate, provide a blood sample, and solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded just to get the process started. And don't even get me started on trying to reach someone in their "customer support" department. It's like trying to call the Lost City of Atlantis – you're more likely to have a meaningful conversation with a dolphin.

Oh, and let's not forget about the gym itself. The equipment looks like it's been around since the '80s, and not in a cool vintage way. I half expected to find a Jane Fonda VHS workout tape in the corner. The weights are rusty, the treadmills creak like haunted houses, and the locker rooms are a biohazard waiting to happen.

In conclusion, if you enjoy terrible customer service, a membership cancellation process that makes the Da Vinci Code look like a bedtime story, and working out on equipment older than your grandma, then Retro Fitness in Jersey City is the place for you. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and find a gym that actually values its members and doesn't make you want to pull your hair out in frustration. Trust me; your sanity will thank you.

This is barely a retro fitness. There are dozens of high school kids sneaking through the back door every day and make a mess leaving weights everywhere. When I tried to sign up my wife for a guest pass their machine was broken and couldn't take payment, and they wouldn't charge my account or take credit card, and told us to leave. I've been a retro fitness member for over 15 years and this is without a doubt the most unprofessional (and also out of date/unclean) gym I've been to. Won't be returning back here.

Be aware of this gym, they have horrible management, whoever the manager is, she has horrible side manners and is very rude. They literaly don’t care, they just want your money. I ended up with a huge balance and was send to colection with no prior notice, when i tried to explaint to the manager that i had canceled my membership in person with a letter a couple of months ago and was not responsible for this bill, she just said that I had to pay the whole amount in full in order to cancel my membership and hung up the phone on me while i was talking. Please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

Basic bare-bones gym.. it gets crowded quickly after 4p, mainly because I learned that many people don’t have membership (especially the group of teenagers that are usually lounging around). I watched a teen open the back door and let a group of friends enter. Employees don’t care because half the employees are friends with these teens. One teen literally told me that he doesn’t have membership, but just comes here because his friends work here. The owner of the franchise should be concerned because they are losing money by allowing non-paying people to frequent the gym on a regular basis.
But to top it all off, many of the machines are broken (which of course happens sometimes), but they remain broken for weeks or a month at a time. I walked into the bathroom this week and saw the urinals both broken. 🥴🥴
The gym just seems very poor. The Retro on Garfield Ave does a MUCH better job and the staff are more friendly

I was completely fine until drinking the smoothie. Not sure if they clean out their blenders from previous use.. but, clearly the blender they used to make my smoothie was not sanitary.
So just a heads up..DO NOT GET SMOOTHIES FROM THIS GYM unless you want to end up sick for the rest of your day.

Be warned this gym is horrible. From the owner, Mike to the manager Desiree, IDK who is worse. My close friend who is permanently disabled signed up to this gym and went ONE day but due to her disability, she was unable to return. Her doctors were genuinely concerned about her safety and well-being due to her condition. This was communicated to the manager and the owner immediately. The owner would not cancel her membership and required her to submit a medical note explaining why she was unable to attend the gym. Once that was done, it was rejected and the owner demanded that she and her doctor submit disability status documents. Her doctors complied and still that was not enough. At that point both Mike and Desiree avoided her for months (incurred monthly fees) and even went to the extent to call the doctors office to try to illegally obtain her medical records/diagnosis without consent.

They continue to deny cancelling her membership and threaten her with submitting the incurred fees to a collections agency when she only visited there ONE time and has since then communicated that she needs to cancel due to her being disabled.

DO NOT. DO NOT GO HERE.

This Gym is not very good. It's not specifically the staff's fault. It is the business model. The price allows everyone access so the gym is crowded in the evening. A lot of people in the the free weight section are just hanging out. Too many people working out without purpose or intensity so they are doing 1 set, then sitting on the equipment for 10 minutes. People act like they can't share the equipment. You have (like teens) younger people aimlessly picking up dumbells and swinging them around for a bit then just leaving them on the floor wherever. People that don't understand gym etiquette and are wearing cargo pants and boots.

There are many useless machines and not enough benches and free weights, so the area with the free weights resembles a prison yard. I think if they split the free weight benches up into 2 sections on opposite sides of the gym the place would be a lot better then they could get rid of half the useless and broken machines.

This is an ok gym, I do not have too many complaints. I am very disappointed that for the past several months--I think over 6 months, the water fountains have been out of order. This is unbelievable, considering this is a gym where people are sweating and losing a lot of bodily fluids. You can ofcourse buy water from their fridges which I did twice before I realized the water bottles are not sealed so I stopped and started bringing my own water bottle. How long does it take to fix the water fountains? The Bayonne location has functioning water fountains.

BEWARE this gym is full of creepy pervy guys and apathetic staff - i have never felt more uncomfortable in my life while working out. even in the "private" mirrored room, guys will legit peek in and stare at you while stretching.

i called 3/9/22 7:51 PM and shared this with a staff member, when i asked her name she said it was "uhhhhh... chloe," (who hesitates with their name? or was she making up a random name on the spot?) anyway, she didn't express any sympathy and just hurried to get me off the phone when i had a question about my membership, before i could even get my question answered she put me on hold for an extended period of time -

i had to call AGAIN and then she answered my question in two seconds. what is it here? nobody wants to work? then just quit and stay at home watching netflix! if not, then do your job "uhhhhh... chloe!"

This Party City location is amazing! They really get into the spirit of partying!

Music blasting from speakers on top of the music that's already playing from the establishment. People shouting across the entire building to assert dominance.
Accessories being tossed everywhere and placed in wrong spots. Extremely dirty everywhere.

5/5, Best Party City I've ever been to!

**Updated Review 10months apart** - I get dirty looks from the staff now because of my reviews as if it’s to intimidate me but the 4-5pm crowd is now vaping juuls and working out shirtless. This is going on for an hour in a packed gym on weekdays and no one says a word. (See photos) There r groups of guys making movies of themselves working out w/ NO shirts & masks on in the middle of this gym every morning and this place is already crowded considering everything. I Emailed corporate and the branch manager weeks ago about it and no email back. Yesterday when I mentioned it to the front desk person they acted like I was the problem and said "it’s just something they do everyday" -__-

If you don’t believe me check out their IG stories.. no one has any shame tagging Retro in their videos

Yes it is a cheap gym and as much as I appreciate having a place in which to workout, this gym is super unkept. The machines are tattered, floor is sticky and dirty. “Studio” space has ripped up yoga mats. I wish they cared more about cleanliness. It’s gross. Sometimes I see a guy going around “cleaning” but he just picks up garbage from the garbage bins & that’s pretty much it. I don’t think this gym has been given a THOROUGH cleaning…ever.

I found out yesterday (10/30/2021) that I wasn't registered properly at this gym! I tried to go to the twin city location and I wasn't in the system. I have been trying to call this location over and over again. No one is answering! What kind of business is this? So unprofessional!

Liars, cheaters, and scammers. This is the type of gym that will pretend they never received your cancellation when you came in person and send you to collections 6 months later. PLEASE SPARE YOURSELF THE NIGHTMARE.

Record every interaction with them. Send cancellation with certified USPS mail and report to the BBB!

I am not a member of Retro Fitness but a friend of mine has been a member for years . She hasn’t used the gym since 2018 when she became disabled. My friend can barely leave the house, never mind work out. In November 2020 my friend called Retro Fitness to cancel the membership and was told she can’t cancel by phone. The contract says that so it’s understandable, although the website claims they created one of the most member-friendly cancellation policy in the industry. Not true. Their contract also says cancellation will happen within 7 days of notification to the gym (based on the fact my friend has been a member for over 12 months). Now they claim she has a delinquency and they will not cancel her membership until it is satisfied. It has already affected her credit score and will remain a judgment against her so why can’t she cancel ? So they can continue to charge her when they see she hasn’t used their gym in three years. In a wellness focused business, it’s discouraging to see that Retro Fitness - Route 440, Jersey City is more concerned about squeezing every penny out of people instead of doing the right thing. My friend has always been a financially responsible person so this situation weighs heavily on her, and this during a time she is dealing with a devastating and debilitating illness. This gym has a D rating from the Better Business Bureau so it’s not shocking, but sad. Shame on you Retro Fitness!

UPDATE: To the owner who responded and said for my friend to call, that has been done numerous times with no luck - including today - and she asked if you as the owner is aware of her attempts at cancellation and the current situation she is in and she was told yes- I’ve called on my friend’s behalf several times over the past five days and I asked last week for my number to be given to you - I advised the manager today that if the membership is not cancelled by Wednesday, we will be contacting the Division of Consumer Affairs to file a complaint- she said to do what we have to do - I suggested she check with you to see if you believed this situation is worth resolving - my friend paid thousands of dollars to your gym over the years including since 2018 when she became disabled. If you talk to your staff, you will be able to get my friend’s contact information and resolve this. She is not inclined to keep calling the gym because it has gotten her nowhere.

UPDATE: I dropped off a letter at Retro Fitness 7 days ago (October 6th) so if Retro is committed to their customers, I expect them to call my friend Margaret and let her know her membership is cancelled effective today - this is their 7 day policy - the “delinquency” is in dispute with the credit card company and Retro has opportunities to respond so keeping my friend’s membership open is not necessary. I will provide an update to advise if Retro abides by their cancellation policy. If my friend does not receive a call today advising of her cancelled membership, the Division of Consumer Affairs will be contacted tomorrow.

UPDATE on 10/15/2021: It's been over a week and Retro has not cancelled my friend's membership and she called the 3rd party financial company you make your monthly payments through, ABC Financial, and was told her membership was placed on a freeze on 10/9/2021. Her membership was already supposed to be on a freeze and she canceled it on 10/6-- Retro doesn't abide by their own cancellation policy. They are claiming she is in delinquency for less than $100 and they won't let her cancel her membership because of it. She shouldn't have to pay for months her account was supposed to be frozen. I'm reaching my max number of characters for this review, so BEWARE before you join Retro. I see a lot of angry customers, and similar stories. We should all go to the media to look into these shady business practices.

The staff are unprofessional, rude and has poor communication skills, I was there some few minutes ago and I spoke to D....and she was rude and unknowledgeable .secondly I having been trying to get the staff responsible for personal training ,for more than 8 months but no luck,,I have been calling the office many times an end up being told the manager is not available, in a meeting or busy. I have been visiting the office more than 10 times but I never managed to meet anyone who assisted me . I spoke with my trainer and he texted the manager to contact me but the manager didn't. So what should I do with this unprofessionalanism, poor customer service and poor communication?.I am doing this to settle unrealistic bill I owe them, which they billed me during pandemic while the gym was closed due to state directive.

If it’s possible to give negative stars, I would. The absolute lack of professionalism of the “management” staff is appalling. This chain, and more specifically this location, needs to invest in sensitivity training and professional development for all staff, let alone ones that call themselves “managers”. After attempting to speak to a manager on multiple occasions, I went in person, only to be told that one was not on duty, nor could I be provided with an expectation for when they would be there. Actually, I was told that they’re “hard to pin down”. Since I was trying to cancel my family membership, I came prepared with a dated letter which listed out all family members, the reason for cancellation and the card being charged. I was told that it would be handled, however, only the primary person was cancelled and the I’ve continued to be charged for the remaining people. The club tells me to contact their 3rd party billing company, but they tell me to contact the club….and the cycle continues. The entire thing reeks of a scam, and the longer I’m held at bay, another billing cycle passes. The absolute worst experience made worse by Stephanie Gomez, who should be first in line for customer service training.

If you’re just coming here to work out and know what you’re doing good gym. If your expecting great customer service or welcoming attitudes this not the gym for you try planet fitness. I was in both and tho planet fitness gym treats you better there are no free weights and it’s a further drive that’s why I’m still at retro. The 440 location is not friendly or welcoming but it’s not all retro gyms because Bayonne retro is friendly and welcoming.

AVOID. Poor customer service. Difficult to cancel, & the quality of the gym is not worth it.
As other reviews mention, the cancelling process was made to be extra difficult.
Called the club to do so, but it can only be done by mail.
The person I spoke with on the phone was standoffish, cold, & unforthcoming.
They said I should have an emailed copy of my contract. I never got one.
The only way to obtain one is getting a print out from the club, which is hard when you're trying to cancel after moving.
Very inconvenient.
They stopped charging during the pandemic, but then started charging randomly again in fall of last year without any notice.
Very unprofessional.
Would advise to go to a gym that actually cares about their customers.

UPDATE: Today I called DESIREE, retro fitness manager of both Jersey City and Hoboken locations. Retro, if you are reading my reviews, she needs to be taught how to manage properly. She was very unprofessional and kept cutting me off regarding the cancellation (Please refer to the review below for my story). She claimed she left a voicemail and calls back in November 2020. And supposedly, ABC Fitness sent me emails every month until today before sending this to collections. I told her I did not receive a single thing. But she said it’s in her notes. Well those notes are a lie. I did not receive a single thing and I would like to see proof of this besides false “notes.” I will be disputing all charges and I reported them to the Better Business Bureau. PLEASE AGAIN AVOID THIS GYM AT ALL COSTS. Read the other reviews, I’m not the only one.

Original Review: I’d rate this 0 stars if I could. First of all, during the 2020 COVID lockdown, I was charged late fees bc my card expired. I didn’t receive a notification that my card expired until 2 months after incurring charges. Not to mention, I also was charged the $100 annual fee when retro was closed for most of the year due to covid. But I still paid it. After considering the safety of myself and others due to covid, especially being a covid nurse myself, I decided to cancel my membership. I was told to send “certified” mail, which I paid $8 for, in order to cancel. However, I am literally a 3 min drive away from retro and stopping by a UPS and sending “certified” mail to them seems absurd. But I did it anyway. Then they told me they’d have to charge me a 2 month cancellation fee in order to cancel my membership. Are you kidding me? I spoke to a staff member back in November 2020, and she said she can freeze my account so I wouldn’t be charged. Fast forward to May 2021, I received mail from First Credit Services saying that I owe retro $150 bc my membership was not properly cancelled as I did not pay the 2 month cancellation fee. However, as I said, I was told by a staff member that I wouldn’t incur fees as they would freeze my account. I called the assistant manager of retro this morning and she was very rude and cut me off while I was telling her what happened. She said I was given wrong information and I would need to pay the 2 month cancellation. I told her I should not be punished for one of your staff giving me misinformation. And now I owe $150+?! This is ridiculous. She said the balance I owe is from the late fees and monthly membership fees accumulating since December 2020. It is May 2021...why am I only now receiving notification about being charged since last year?! That’s because this business is unethical. It’s because this business is money hungry, especially during a time that people are vulnerable due to Covid. I really hope this business burns to the ground. I will be speaking to the manager on Thursday. I refuse to pay any fees, because this is completely unreasonable. Also, for quality of the gym itself, it’s small and it stinks. There’s not enough equipment and they’re old and outdated. They don’t enforce social distancing or covid precautions. I’ve seen gym members without their masks several times. Avoid this place and any retro at all costs. Join Crunch, they let you cancel just by walking in. And the gym has better equipment.

Customer service with this company is a prime example of why people say it is dead. If you move, make sure you prioritize retro fitness and show up in person to cancel because once you are out of state, there is ABSOLUTELY no way to cancel. They will continue to bill the account. My husband and I both sent letters after we moved because that was their solution to us moving and finding out the hard way that there is no option other than that, to cancel The store is now claiming the letter was never sent and are trying to send this bill to collections. Why would you not inform a customer of this? Why is there no other solution? This company is crooked and will charge a dead man's account, based on other reviews I have read stating a similar problem.

Previously gave this club a 5 star. I came in on February and informed the staff I was moving back to California and I wanted to prepay my remaining month and half in advance (which I did). I signed a piece a paper and gave it to one of the girls. Then saw I was continuing to get charged the next two months. I’m still getting calls about payments when my membership was already cancelled. I called and spoke with an employee who remembers me talking about canceling and moving and I asked for the manager to call me back. I never got a call. The owner needs to call me in ASAP before I change the review back. He can find my number through my last name.

My mom went to sign up to this gym. The manager was so rude and unprofessional. When asked to see if I could register she said no that can’t help her with that. Had an attitude the whole time and raised her voice at me while she was nothing but kind. There has to be a solution for this. My mom asked for a Spanish speaker and she said no and walked away. Another employee came up to me and said she did speak Spanish and helped me sign up. Horrible experience. When she asked the employee about the manager she said she was rude to everyone.

The other gym members are focused on working out rather than chatting and showing off, the front desk are professional but not obsequious; they get the job done politely and efficiently !
