I go to the Monday night yoga class with Andrea. She is amazing, she is one of if not the best yoga teacher I’ve been to. She starts by asking us what we want to work on, any soreness, she’s in tune, she’s fun. If she leaves I’ll downgrade my membership. I also have done Regina’s classes too and she’s great I just can’t make Thursdays In general the equipment is clean, good, staff are always friendly, hours are good.

The place is filthy. The weights are left all over the place. Nobody cleans the benches after they use them. It’s common for someone to take over multiple machines at once thus disrupting the flow of most workouts. The paper towel dispensers are usually empty if not broken altogether. The music is sarcastically loud and horrible. Nobody wants to listen to K pop while lifting, I don’t care what you are into.
The one and only benefit to the place is that there is always parking and the staff is pretty cool.

Had the opportunity to head to Neptune as I’m residing in the Long Branch area temporarily and have been wanting to try out other gyms of this franchise. I was greeted right when I walked in from their friendly staff. The Owner Jeff must’ve realized I wasn’t a familiar face but he was quick to greet me and welcome. The clientele and overall environment was very welcoming and friendly. One gentlemen asked to work in with me and complimented my physique where we briefly trained together. This happened to be another owner Zach who was also very welcoming and accommodating. The facility itself has everything you need, clean and organized. I can’t say enough good things about it and how the overall atmosphere felt like home. Thank you.

Awful experience at Retro. The staff is only interested in selling memberships, not helping the clients. No help with the machines, the membership details or the app on my phone which never worked. I paused my membership due to illness (I am 75 BTW) and it was never explained that it was just for two months. Due to illness, my family was paying my bills and I just found out I have been charged for months when I thought my membership was paused. When I called I was told I had to come in person. I do not have a vehicle at the moment...again...I am a senior citizen....I am frustrated and angry. And looking at other reviews, this gym is a rip off and only interested in your money. FIND ANOTHER GYM...esp if you are a senior.

CHECK YOUR BANK STATEMENTS. After 5 months of relentlessly trying to get my money back, I am beside myself. After I canceled they continued to charge me for months. They also added my card to someone else’s account who had “the same name as me” so I was being double charged even before canceling. The owner Zac never once spoke to me despite multiple requests to speak to him regarding this. Such a coward and horrible business man. The whole thing seems sketchy and this incompetence was incredible. My refunds happened in about 5 different amounts as they kept refunding the incorrect amount. Feels as though they’re banking on me giving up. I had to call and text every week at times daily just to be assisted. Debated legal action as I was getting fed up. Do not trust them and I will never return to retro.

Retro fitness is a great gym that offers a variety of exercise equipment whether cable machines, treadmills, exercise bicycles, elliptical machines, and free weights too. They have spin classes and other classes as well.Tanning, massage therapy, and personal fitness training is available. There's lockers and showers and it's a clean environment. There's a variety of all levels of fitness and ages too. The staff is approachable and friendly. Retro Fitness offers other awesome perks. Come check them out.

An absolutely TERRIBLE, unaccommodating, poor, and frankly money-hungry experience trying to cancel my membership. Back in November I put my membership on a freeze as I was headed out of state. I explained I may be moving once the freeze is up. They said no problem, whenever I'm back to stop in and cancel the membership. NO ONE informed me of the timeframe that I needed to come in and that I would be charged for months when I wasn't there (as I was also informed I could only freeze up to two months). When I finally made it back to the club to cancel, I was told my membership would cancel after I paid for the month of January (in which I won't be at the club). No one at the club was able to help me get this payment canceled or even reimbursed, so I called their financial partner. They told me to talk to the manager at the club, but no manager at the club was listed on the financial database. They then called the club for me and said there was nothing they could do, the club policy is policy, they will not reimburse me. Furthermore, they could not share the name of the manager to me.
I have never felt more disregarded by an establishment that "values their customers". If you valued your customers you'd understand their situations and at least give them some sort of credit. And you'd at least share your manager names with customers. I used to see who I assume is the manager at the club every day! But now when it comes to money, It is policy and no wiggle room or human empathy. Frankly, I'm disappointed I ever signed up.

I haven’t been to Retro Fitness since before Covid I paid them for two years until I finally made the company stop collecting by threatening a lawsuit. Then called the place and they wouldn’t let me cancel over the phone. Then I go in person and they try to charge me. Remember I have not checked into this place in years and they can see that. So they try to charge me and I asked for a manager but none was there. Now they sent to collections and added a mark to my perfect credit. These people are thieves and liars. Never waste money with them. They have gotten far more from me then they deserved and still want to rob me.

The lay out is perfect but your prices on drinks are way to high compared to other gym in the area , other places charge let's say 3.75 you charge 6.00. That is insane , this country was and is a capitalism country and that means you must be competitive in almost every thing.
Drinks are the most important part of the game doing your work out , to stay hydrated and ready for the next set ,
Your smoothies are weak and at 9.00 that is a big turn off ,
No place to sit or drink , and a big coffee pot, free of charge is a plus and would be fantastic. Also you should open on Sunday at 6 not 7 , that 1 hour makes it ..

This gym is great for the money. The young lady that works the front desk is very nice (I'm embarrassed to not know her name). The rest of the staff seems great too. I have been in the strength training business for 13 years and it's tough to beat this deal. Could use some better barbells (a couple are bent and another is less than desirable to work with) but they have 2 power racks and 1 half rack. Great selection of machines and rarely a wait to use anything. Members are courteous for the most part and the gym is clean. Seriously, skip Planet Fitness if you're on a budget and train here. You will not be disappointed.

Worse customer service of a gym that I ever experienced!
I have been in the Fitness Industry myself for over 23 years; and the staff and owners are are most unprofessional that I have ever encountered. I complied with their procedure to cancel my summer membership as I live in North Jersey. When I was charged for another month, I contacted them and was given the “oh we don’t know” “we didn’t receive your letter” “the owners are too busy right now” “no return phone call or email” for a simple $35.18!!
I reached out 4 times and finally today spoke to Ben; who apparently is processing the refund.
Ben; learn some manners and please do not interrupt customers when they are speaking and talk over them. Your manners are arrogant and rude
It’s not the money, it’s the principle and their customer service was insulting.
Find a Planet Fitness or any other gym where the staff is pleasant and accommodating!!!

Retro Fitness in Neptune is large, clean, and the staff are extremely friendly. The owner, Jeff even knows me by name and encourages me whenever he sees me. I have a trainer, Rayna, who’s a sweetheart at the core but takes training seriously and can get taught when I’m not giving my best. It’s pretty cool when someone sees the potential, you have yet to see for yourself. The classes are great and well attended. At first I was intimidated, just a month ago, but now I feel more comfortable being a member, utilizing the equipments, obtaining knowledge and advice from staff and members to reach my ultimate goal.

I was excited to possibly join this gym considering I live right down the road. I never ever leave reviews but this experience was really mind blowing to me. I visited around 9 am on Tuesday morning, the man at the front desk needs to work on his customer service. I was hoping to get a tour or to check out the gym before I made a decision to join. I was advised that I had to buy a day pass for $15 dollars. I even asked about a tour and was barked at for not introducing myself first. That is not how you talk to someone that is trying to ask questions about becoming a future member. He was very rude and aggressive.

I've canceled my membership before the next billing cycle and was still charged the following month. I spoke with a manager and he told me I was correct and he would issue a refund. One month later I was charged again and still haven't received my first refund he promised. I just called again today and there's apparently there's no manager on site and the front desk person put me on a not so brief hold. I eventually hung up. I guess this is now a BBB situation. The man at the front desk was very rude. I brought a friend with me to work out as my contract allows. I scanned my friend in who was already in the system and then proceeded to get yelled at by the man at the front desk. He said in an angry voice that he needed to check me in and that my scan wasn’t good enough. I said okay sure and he continued to lecture us with an angry tone. I said we understand and please do not be rude to us. He quibbled back and I said okay and kept walking—he called out to me and pursued me basically saying that he wanted to continue this discussion and for a lack of better words, threatened to call the cops because I was not continuing his confrontational episode. All we wanted to do was work out and not be bothered. We ended up feeling very uncomfortable and left. Anyone who is looking for a gym please look out for guys like this. It seemed like a power trip. He had short hair and a stout build in case you see him at Retro. Beware.

THAT is how nasty and rude this man was. He treated us with such disrespect and callousness. Take your money to Planet Fitness or classpass.com or any other gym. The service will undoubtedly be better than at this Retrofitness.

The owner also uses a certified letter loophole to force unhappy/unwilling customers to stay tied to his gym. I've never heard of any business that would make their customers (especially ones who are having to terminate services due to a death in the family) to then have to pay more money and find more time we dont have to go send him a certified letter to cancel?

We are clearly stating we dont want your services--  why is that not enough for a business owner to say "I don't want to forcibly take your money."

Most sensible and solid business owners would never want to keep their hands in an unwilling customers bank account. Not a reputation or scenario most business owners would want to receive or become known for. He would not even honor putting a hold on the account to give us time to get to a post office. I guess he thinks everyone has the same amount of time he does.

Had we at least been treated with any level of respect maybe at a different time we would have referred more business/customers. But clearly manners and ethics don't matter much to this business and owner. He is content making his money off unhappy and unwilling customers.

BEWARE. TAKE YOUR MONEY TO Planet Fitness or CLASSPASS.com OR ANY OTHER GYM!! The service will undoubtedly be better than at this Retrofitness.

The staff is very friendly..the gym has plenty of options for each workout level (beginner up to hard core) but it’s a good vibe all the way around. You won’t feel judged or pressured if you’re just getting started or back into working out. And if you’re a regular gym goer retro has the space and equipment to accommodate. Personally I had taken a break because of covid and tried a different gym out for a few months. Although it was geared more towards my workout routine, it was smaller, the staff wasn’t friendly, it was more expensive and the equipment was too old. I tried retro on a one day pass and it was a great experience. I was so confident I purchased an entire year. I’ve been going for 2-3 months now and it’s been a very positive overall experience. My only complaints- and these are small knocks on the place. I wish the hours were a bit better. I don’t need a 24 hour gym but weekends closing at 7pm is tough for those who work. 2nd - people just don’t re-rack their weights there. All the gyms I’ve been to in my life I’ve never seen anything like it. I hope somebody reads this and finds a way to correct the issue. But again, overall the place is outstanding. Everyone wears a proper mask, from what I’ve seen mostly everyone cleans the equipment (there are lots of spray bottles and paper towels). The small knocks shouldnt take away from the overall score here. I believe those can and will be changed in the future. Give retro a try on a daily pass and see how you feel. Oh and online tool (retro website) shows you the occupancy level at the current time. That’s a great feature! Sometimes even in prime hours it’s really slow and a great time to go when otherwise you might dread the evening rush. I can’t remember a time that it’s been overwhelmingly crowded.

I have been going to this gym 3-4 times a week since it re-opened back in September and I could not be happier. The owner (Jeff) is very down to earth and will go above and beyond to ensure guest satisfaction. The staff is wildly friendly and always up for a chat or to offer recommendations. Whether I arrive at 5:00am or 2:00pm, the front desk staff always greets me with a smile and an enthusiastic Hello. Being a frequent member, all of the staff knows me by name and that personal touch is why I continue to come back. Keep up the Good Work Retro of Neptune!

Pro: Facility is nice and adequately offers basic athletic equipment and services.

Con: Do not try to cancel your membership without 13 conversations, the gym trying to talk you into it, and having to physically go in or send a certified letter. Given everything that is happening in the world, just honor your members wishes to quit without the extra hurdles. It’s unnecessarily unsafe to go in, a waste to spend an extra $4 on certified Mail for a ridiculous cancellation letter, and no opportunity to just cancel over the phone. You make it impossible for folks to want to go back, when it feels safe/appropriate. After you do go in and cancel, you’re only there for one signature and then only to be told there’s a 21 day clause and that you’ll still have to pay your monthly fee. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO ELSEWHERE!!!! There are other choices that don’t make you do this circling just for you to end an already ridiculous contract.

Neptune City gym is super clean! 100% compliance with COVID regulations. Owners and staff are professional, friendly, and always greeting their customers with a smile. The owners (Jeff and Zach) are always on site, morning and night. I have been a member of multiple gyms over the years, this gym makes you feel like family. The new management is going above and beyond to provide opportunities for outdoor classes, keeping our sanity in check. Bonnie ROCKS!!

Edit- completely unaccommodating with trying to cancel my membership. Requiring someone come in during a pandemic is asinine as is requiring certified mail when I have been unable to work and am barely getting by.

A franchise/chain gym where the owners are so passionate and hands on, is amazing to see, no broken equipment, gym is so clean, the staff is very friendly. Social distancing outdoor classes is a god send, im finally getting back to where i was in march, and its because of retro. I cant wait for them to reopen, ill be the first person in the door!!

I do not recommend this gym. First, cancelling is near impossible. I brought a letter from my husband to cancel his membership. They ignored the letter. We called to cancel over the phone. That was not allowed. So, we put a stop payment on the credit card until he could get into the gym. He then cancelled. Now, A YEAR LATER, we received a mark on our credit score and were contacted by a collection agencies to collect the amount we did not pay during the time we issued the stop payment. Even though he didn't step foot in the gym and we attempted to cancel twice. It's such a scam.

Oh - and when I went to cancel MY membership for a gym that is nicer and at a higher price point, the manager asked me if my new last name was why I could afford a nicer gym. I just love sexist comments like that. Thanks for solidifying my choice to leave.
