I would tell members and people thinking about joining to go to the Montclair location or a different gym entirely. The staff are great, however the bathrooms and overall cleanliness of the gym is subpar. The bathrooms are never stocked with toilet paper, dirty and it seems the owners don’t care about the minor fixes or upkeep. Go to a different gym, even if this is convenient.

I have been a long time member of Retro fitness

I had a email reminding from Corporate for a free 16 oz smoothie . There were 3 front desk personnel along with the owner .

I wanted to redeem the smoothie and the owner proceeds to tell me that he doesn't have any 16oz smoothie that Corporate always makes the same mistake because they are 24oz. He then told me to go into my account and get a 24 oz smoothie by redeeming some points. . I asked the front desk personnel if they could help me with the transaction of redeeming the difference in points and I wa told they didn't no have to do it. I stayed in the front area for a few minutes trying to figure out how to redeem for a 24 oz using my free 17oz smoothie and the points, the owner spoke about. The owner looked at me with the hope that I just go away

Growing frustrated I asked for the corporate number and he told me he doesn't have one

The front desk agent told me that she would try to get me an email for corporate. After waiting an additional time . I was simply ignored and I found myself writing this review

But, people are still allowed to occupy machines watching videos and text messaging for as long as they want.

Dirty always. The green rug in the stretch room where you lay down always looks like someone was eating on it. Broken empty paper towel dispensers, Alcohol spools sporadically empty and dirty, machine cables broken. Most annoying is, people are allowed to sit on machines and text or surf FOR EVER while people wait. On site management says they’re not allowed to do anything about it or even post signs.
Other than that, the kids that work there are great.

Staff is great, but the owners do not care about this place. They have no clue how to run a gym it is embarrassing. The owners need to take pride in owning this gym, honestly what an embarassment. I’ve been here since 2013 and these guys are absolutely clueless. This metal is exposed and ripped my sweats as I was walking through the walkway. Unacceptable and could’ve been my actual leg that was cut. Place needs a wake up call. Absolute dump.

The only reason that I attend this gym is because they are 5 minutes away from my place. They frequently have broken equipment which happened for months and was only fixed because they charged members a yearly fee of $51. They were closed because the power went out and they decided not to have a paper sign in. They are frequently late in the morning and the bathrooms are disgusting. The management must change because they are ineffective at communicating with members and living up to expectations.

This facility is scheduled to open at 5:00 A.M.. I waited for 45 minutes and they finally opened. It seems as though bad habits are continuing.

I will be ending my membership because of this issue and I encourage others to spend their time and money at a different facility.

As of 11/25/2024 The turf area is not accessible. The ownership does not seem to have a plan to fix or open the area. They do not allow access to many things. How does the management keep this place open?

Change in management was the BEST decision for the gym. I’ve been a member for years where things were constantly broken or OOS , Anthony has made some noticeable changes already !! Where do I even begin? Since this retro fitness has been under new management, I have seen more improvements in two weeks than in the last four years that I’ve been here as a member. Anthony is already doing a great job with replacing broken grips getting rid of broken machines and moving things around to maximize the amount of space in the gym. He has already gotten the fans cleaned and installed new air, fresheners to keep the gym smelling great as well. He brings a new energy into the gym and it is a positive one.

It’s almost been a month with the new manager, Anthony, and I’ve already seen a turn around in cleanness, organization, and equipment being repaired rapidly. I can’t wait to see what Anthony has in store for the gym’s future. This has to be one of the worst gyms in the area. There’s at least 5 machines broken currently. Two of them have been out of order for over a month now. The only two flat benches they have are broken and are still being used. They need to be replaced instead of fixing. One day the bench is going to collapse on someone mid workout. A lawsuit ready to happen. The owner robs members with the yearly fee and neglects the machines. Thought this fee was to help upgrade the gym. An embarrassment to retro fitness franchise.

Upgrading from a 3 to a 4 star review. Amazingly low price. Limited amount of equipment but offers a good variety of selections for different muscle group focuses. Conservative when it comes to gym rules for example dropping weights and being loud some times. Does not offer much in terms of heavy weight training equipment and spaces. Amazing view of the NYC skyline while running on treadmills. Offers amazing shakes and drinks. Overall, this gym is for the average fitness enthusiasts with some important above average features but lacking in a huge market of weight training.

As a disabled member as of July of 2021 I have been visiting Retro on a daily basis. I've never seen the abuse of handi-cap spot. So for starters, there's only one spot...After going there for > 8 mos, yesterday I called the No. Arlington Authority to deal w/ vehicle parked illegally w/ no handi-cap placard or license plate. I waited 25 mins for a close spot to entrance & waited for Authority to investigate why the driver was irresponsible in nNOT letting other disabled people know why he was taking the spot. In addition, previous to this incident, the parking sign has been turned around, moved or gone leaving anyone to park in the same spot...People need to practice compassion for the disabled & Retro will be fined by the ADA to correct the abuse...Sorry, I didn't wake up from an induced coma 7 years ago to deal w/ the lack of compassion for both member & Retro itself....

I go to this gym because the location is convenient and I do like retro. However, I wish it was a bit cleaner. Every time I use one of the machines I cant help but notice all the hair and dirt at the bottom of them. There’s signs that say a deep cleaning is done every night but that’s obviously not the case.

Perfect for the price, the shakes “blends” are a perfect post workout treat. Kept clean, weights are re-racked!!! cant say the same for nearby LA BlahBalh where I paid almost $100 month. I have been a member since it opened. My biggest complaint is that they don’t hire employees that understand that part of their job is to show up on time to open the door. A number of Saturdays, myself and others have been had to wait at least a half an hour until somebody shows up. Please hire responsible people to work. We all have busy schedules and are trying to get a work out in on our schedule not whenever someone feels like coming. Also get the TVs on the machines to work. Most have been inoperable for months.

I originally gave them two stars, but have changed it to one as no one showed up on time to open the gym two days in a row. Once you could maybe understand but twice indicates to me a lack of care by the management for their customers.

The convenience, the affordability (and what I get for it), the friendly staff, just so many things are great about Retro! People are friendly and respectful too, which is so incredibly appreciated. Also I really love just how spacious the Retro in North Arlington is, I've been to a few others and the layouts just seemed so cramped and uncomfortable. A lot of what other reviews have said has been true. I’m going around the NA, Kearny, Lyndhurst, Nutley area looking for a gym so this was based on my guest visit. I went around 530(prime time). This place has just about everything you need. All the machines and weights possible which is good. However, it isn’t clean at all and the locker rooms smell like someone has left their sweaty gym bag for years. In addition, I overheard some members complain about how it is dirty, greasy, and dusty and that the workers (young teens) are at the front desk just hanging out, all which are complaints in the reviews. However, for the price you pay I say it’s fair what you get in return, could be a bit cleaner.

No sauna or steam room like other high end gyms but if you’re just someone who likes to get a nice workout in without any high end equipment then this is the place for you. Every day gym. Surprised at how spacious and big it is. Equipments seems relatively new. Clean and absolutely there is nothing to complain.

If I am picky at one thing, it is the crowd that comes to the gym, and the people that I see every day are quite pleasant, looks well educated and am happy to see the same and familiar faces every day.

There is a movie theatre with some cardio equipments. Used it once only and it was not crowded. Not sure as to why more people don’t use theatre.

I would certainly recommend this gym without any hesitation.

Started visiting North Arlington location. I like how bright the layout is. Fernanda’s classes are infectious. A great workout and lot of sweat. I would definitely recommend this gym.
