I only joined because it's the closest gym. Sign on the door for Saturdays says 7am, it's 8 and no one's here. It's me outside with 3 other members waiting. 2 weeks ago they closed on a Sunday, no notice or note. With all the gyms closing during the pandemic you think they'd try to keep their clientele happy. If this is the trend I'll be joining the ymca.

The absolute worst staff ever. Employees here have no respect for customers and find it okay to speak down to people. I guess the manager doesn't mind this and doesn't bother training for better customer service.
There was no manger on site and only an employee Derrica who was too busy talking with a man at the front desk to assist other people.

The best gym is the gym you actually use. RetroPisc is close and convenient. The staff leaves you alone to do your thing. Its an ideal gym to get in, get out and move on with your day.

Been to many Retro Fitness locations in NJ (with the Flex membership). The state of equipment at this one is by far the best. Barbells are not rusted, and plates actually slide on/off easily unlike the old junk at other locations I've visited.

You need to train your front desk personnel. To speak to clients in a more professional manner. I am not impressed with your facility. Due to business in the area I visited your facility twice---no friendly greetings. This last time I felt like was being "talked down to" when I checked in. Like I was a seven year old! Told I have to have temp chked and fill out Covid form....all well and good..
you don't COMMAND clients! we pay good money to you...you talk to us in a professional.manner.

Okay gym but going downhill. Clamps on bench press chains broke- never replaced. Resistance bands stolen-never replaced. Bumper plates for deadlifts gone-never replaced. Menβs locker room redone-always gross and not clean. Garbages often overflowing with paper towels. No towels in dispensers. A shame considering how many people they have working there that it is as dirty as it is. Was going to sign some people up but decided against it for all of these reasons.

AVOID. youβll have to send a certified letter to cancel your membership.
Good with a variety of equipment and enough treadmills for everyone. Only down side is the water fountain. It's old unfiltered water tap water that tastes terrible. Given that you're not going to bring enough water with you, you're forced to either drink it or buy bottled water which is highly marked up.

Easy to enroll but hard to cancel!!! This place keeps charging you even if you have canceled the membership for around months.
Hereβs my story. I start working out at Retro from April, enrollment and monthly fee , everything was fine, bill cycle is every 22nd. After 3 month, Iβm moving to TX, Iβm about to cancel the member(Aug 3rd), I call them and say want to cancel it, they said them donβt cancel through phone, what if Iβve already moved? That means youβll keep my membership active forever? Fortunately, I was still at NJ, I show up and canceled it, a man taught a girl how to cancel using their system, I stood over there like 10 mins, signed . Later I received cancellation form by email, I thought thatβs it.
But, I was wrong. I was charged $30 again on Aug 22nd. I have already paid the monthly fee for July 22 - Aug 22, and I cancel it in between (Aug 3rd). And why I get charged again on Aug 22 again? EXM?You charged me for Aug 22 to Sep 22?
I called them, they say thatβs the policy, and I search for the cancellation email from my mailbox, it says last billing cycle should be Aug 22. I got nothing to say, I signed on that form, but I didnβt really read it. Alright, I still donβt know whatβs that charge for, but since I sign on that form, Iβll take it as a lesson. I thought I finally get rid of it. But I was wrong again.
I was charged $21.39 again on Sep 22, WTF, I call Retro again, say I canceled my membership for almost 2 months, why Iβm still been charged every month, he ask for my first name and last name, then told me I didnβt get canceled properly, and now he complete it. Money will go back to me. WHAT? You do cancellation through phone now?
I write this review right after making the call, Iβm not sure Iβll get the money back, OR I will be charged again in future, I just want to say this place is not recommended, $30/mo is affordable but not worth it, the equipments were old and dirty, even the bathroom, you definitely want to spend your money somewhere else!!

Despite being a dedicated customer for 8 years, I was treated poorly by the staff and manager. A simple request such as change of home gym to a new location cannot be achieved at this location despite 2 in-person requests, several phone calls, and an email to the manager. Apparently, the manager does not respond to your first email due to bunch of emails and sends message via staff that he is busy preparing for a presentation for the company. Such poor treatment of loyal customers who help you run your gym and on whom you should be focusing first! Still waiting for a response. I am still being charged monthly and unable to attend gym at the new location. Highly disappointed customer :(

Every employee I spoke to gave me a different answer. I was even told that this location didnβt have someone from management that could assist me. Save your money and go to a place that will actually values their members

I train at Retro in the mornings from about 10 am. The staff is great, always a smile and greeting and the place is immaculately clean. I have a closer Retro to train at but I come here instead. Nick the manager/trainer is a wealth of training knowledge and is always willing to give you training tips or advice, he's the best. The people are friendly and the place is state of the art, nothing better. I'm a lifer here!

I will and have already told everyone I know interested in going to the gym that Retro in Piscataway is the best in the area.The staff is always friendly, machines clean, locker rooms clean, showers clean.There is room for any type of exercise you prefer. I use my phone for classes on an app and they have two rooms to choose from (when no classes are going on) to use for my weight session. For cardio, even at the busiest times, I've never had trouble getting a machine.

good gym.. been with them for 4-5 years on and off. if youre looking to get a good workout and more importantly, wanna meet like minded people that can mentor/support you... this is the spot. The staff and the layout may have changed, but I still get a spot from guys i met like 5 years ago. Noone cares what you look like or how much you bench, just come in and have fun. Just please dont be the person not reracking weights or not wiping down the bench. 10/10

Of the seven or so RFs I've visited, this one is the best - at least during non-peak hours. Best overall selection of equipment and a strong impression that whoever runs the place isn't merely going through the motions.
Why do I say this? Last Friday I was in the vicinity and it was deadlift day. There were closer RFs but they were newer and cursed with those 12 sided plates. Glad I went because I was greeted by TWO olympic deadlift platforms/power rack combos. I've only seen one such platform at a RF - in Manasquan. At a typical RF you're lucky to see two generic squat racks. Some only have one.
They also have TWO Prowlers and enough gymtoy-free floor space to push them. This is in addition to the usual assortment of gymachines, treadmills, etc. It's hard not to find what you want. But who knows; YMMV.
There's more but I wont belabor the point.
Anyway, very RF manager in a 100 mile radius should be required to visit to see what serious management can do. Won't happen tho.

Gus Kayalo - The friendliness of all the staff, including the trainers on the floor is what stands out to me. The guy at the desk always gives me a wide smile when I walk up to check in. Hard to do for most people that early in the morning. Also love the fact that they have someone cleaning the equipment daily (she smiles also and returns a hello) I am not used to seeing that being an old school bodybuilder from the 90's. (My first post did not show my review just the rating hence the update)

Equipment selection is pretty excellent. 3 stars because:
-Water fountains are unacceptable, you practically have to put your lips on the spout to get water.
-Not enough 10lb plates and bar clamps
-A stand for extra barbells would help
Edit: water fountain is still sporting a measly 0.5" water spout, the sinks in the bathroom are barely functional, and equipment frequently has loose bolts- dumbbell rack came entirely loose a few weeks ago, holding 800lbs in dumbbells. That would've been an excellent lawsuit if it fell on someone's foot.

Iβve been a member here since 2013 and seen a lot of changes. Definitely love this gym and would give it 5 stars but the reason why I gave 3 is because of the Zumba class. They took out the theater room just so they can have Zumba and on top of that when Zumba class is in session they purposely leave the door open with the music blasting disturbing others working out with weights. Its really annoying to hear the music loud af and the instructor yelling, how can I concentrate on my workout? Otherwise the gym is very nice!

Moved up to this area in December and I cannot express how amazing this retro is. I am continuing my training here after losing 65lbs. I have Retro in general to thank for keeping me motivated throughout my journey but this retro especially has been encouraging in so many ways. The staff is super friendly, the environment feels safe and the facility is very clean. I visit this location daily and highly recommend it to everyone looking to add exercise to their lives !

I joined this location when it first opened in 2010-2011, after returning back to NJ I rejoined at this location and i discovered it to highly disgusting and over crowded. I noticed on multiple occasions, the cleaner spray empty throughout the gym, as well as no paper towels to be found. In addition, the bathroom displayed the same findings with no soap or paper towels. After such a bad flu season you would think they would be on top of these important needs for their members or at least upgrade from cleaning spray to wipes.

Hot water has been broken for about a month now, but that's the best part! Keeps the gym empty. The gym does need a body odor policy, too many smelly people in a small place and the air freshener they use in the free weights area is too heavy. They need that in the locker room.

Just joined yesterday to tryout for 4 days. But yes very friendly staff and patrons too who helped adjust the machine. It was not at all crowded between 7:30 and 8:30 PM.
I like the parking lot outside which is huge and so is the gym.
One can definitely workout without any issues. I will definitely join this Retro fitness soon.
Hope that the service level still continues to be the same in the future.

I had a very horrible experience at Retro Fitness in Piscataway. First off, there are several issues with this gym, however; the foremost being that I was harassed by a male member there in his 60s who had the nerve to ask me out a few months ago and when I told him I was not interested as I am in a relationship and live with my significant other, and told him that him approaching me was creepy, his response was "oh, it is ok for people who are in a relationship to go out with other people. I was like sorry that is not me, and I am totally not interested. Ever since that time, I would notice that he kept eyeing me at the gym while I did my routine workout every single time I was there. Then, about two weeks ago, he went up to me while I was on the crunch machine, and tried talking to me again, however; I really was not responsive to him and continued with my workout. My nerves were literally shot, but I tried to compose myself so not to ruin the remainder of my workout, since I was almost done. After my workout, I went up to the front desk, and I requested to speak to the manager. He came up, and I told him the entire story of what happened, and his response was "I do not see any problems with a man trying to ask you out." I responded by saying "really, you do not. The man is in his 60s, and I regard that as weird, disgusting and perverted. He told me that there is nothing that they could do. I said, "this is not the first time this act happened by the same man, and his response was, "this is the first time I am hearing it." My response was, "I did report it initially to your employee right there (I pointed to one of his employees), and that employee tried not to pay attention to what I was saying (basically ignoring my conversation with the manager. I told them that I do not come to the gym to be bothered and harassed by some pervert, and the purpose of me going is to have a stress free workout after a long day at work. Therefore, I told him that I have decided to cancel my membership effectively as of that day. He cancelled my membership as of that day, and I told him they better not bill me this month. I called the next day and spoke to the manager and asked for a complaint form to be sent to me, (as I work for a law firm and after speaking to one of the attorneys who advised me about it.) I was told that he has to speak with the owner of that location and that someone will call me back regarding the form, etc. A few days later, I received a call from the "new" owner of this location. I explained the entire situation to him, and he told me he was sorry to hear about it. I told him it was too late, and asked to obtain the complaint form from him. He advised me that it will come from their corporate office, which he did not have their phone number. It has been a few days and no call back, no complaint form. I will definitely follow-up with the owner. This has been a horrible eye-opening experience for me, which I will never forget. I would never in a million years recommend Retro Fitness to anyone as the staff at this location lacks professionalism, fails to handle and address the problem and instead blames the member who is confronted with the problem "at their gym." I never had to cancel a gym's membership because of some "pervert." Also, the women's bathroom was never cleaned and kept up and it was just dirty and disgusting. Lastly, the cardio and resistance machines were never available as this gym lacks the number of machines/equipment of the same kind. The worst experience of my life!!!!!!

You generally get what you pay for -- at this gym, you get even more. Previous reviewers (hogging machines and cleanliness) are bringing up issues that are certainly not constants. If you go here regularly, you're paying about a dollar every visit. For that money, this place is a tremendous value!
