August 26 2024 Retro is locked up tight with an eviction notice on the door and locks changed. Due to rent non payment. No notification via social media to members. The only way we found out is other local Retro's welcomed Rockaway members. Hopefully this issue will be solved and we can go back but it doesn't look promising and AGAIN retro failed to informed members and we will probably continued to be charged. And the staff are now all unemployed with no warning. Not only is the gym staff affected, so is the wellness center and the new boxing gym that recently added services. Terrible business practices on this franchise.

The management at this place is phenomenal! I was over billed, and when I told ABC (the third patty billing), they didn't believe or care to look into it. Tim, Al, and others at the Rockaway retro went out of their way to resolve the issue and get all my money back. Thank you!

We started working with Trainer, Tim Branagan a couple of weeks ago. Within this short time we have been impressed with his expertise, obvious knowledge of how the body works and keeping us safe. He is very personable and has a wonderful attitude toward his work. We are very comfortable with Tim's process and impressed with his abilities.

Machines are too old and they donβt regularly do maintenance to the machines. You always have to go to front desk and tell them that a machine needs oil or yoga ball are not inflated and things like that.
Bathroom are never cleaned bathrooms are disgusting.

I have waited 4 months to leave this review because I have futilely hoped that things would be resolved. However, my (and others) complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
Retro has 18 treadmills - one of the main reasons that i chose this gym. Currently, only 4-6 function at all. I have spoken to the front desk 3 times now and have gotten the runaround on when a 'technician' is going to come look at them. It's been 4 months.
This is unacceptable.
If you want to lift free weights, this place is fine. The machines are ok, although one I like to use has been out of service for 2 weeks and I'm not holding my breath.
If you want treadmills, look elsewhere.

Update: 2 weeks later here we go again. Checked fb and Instagram and I didn't see any posts. If you are not going to adhere to the posted hours, change them and find employees who are willing to actually show up. This will be posted on all review sites, yelp,Google etc. Corporate has been informed and time to look at other gyms time yo draft that letter since I signed up in 2016 and my contract had been fulfilled

I sent three emails and left 2 messages for the manager until I was finally able to cancel my membership. This took weeks to resolve and on top of it he had an attitude. All the other staff are nice and equipment was great but terrible communication. Also asked to freeze my account and asked for confirmation that I would not be charged anything going forward. They confirmed I would not be charged anything yet a few months later I was charged an annual fee.

Gyms nice. Not to crowded, clean. My only issue is 80% of the time i want to get a shake on my way out there is no one at the front counter, just in that back office doing whatever. Ive walked out many times after waiting for up to 10 minuets for some soet of service.

I started at the Florham Park Retro, then moved to the Rockaway one because it's closer to home. Big mistake. The childcare was rarely available and when it was the quality of the care giver was a teenager sitting on her phone in the same room as the kids. I continued to use the gym because of location, hours open(used to be open 7 or so in the morning to 10 at night), and a great personal trainer. When the pandemic hit, the location was closed per statewide mandate and the monthly memberships frozen. I heard all of this through text message with my personal trainer, and later confirmed it through emails. That was March 2020. In October 2020 I received a new charge without any communication from the management that the club was opening and how they were going to handle things moving forward. They didn't ask me if I felt safe enough to come back, they didn't offer me options, they didn't communicate anything except that they'd be open and they expected payment. I called to cancel my membership since between March and October I'd become pregnant (high risk) and my doctors advised against returning to the gym due to not only the ongoing pandemic but the risks to carrying a high risk pregnancy. After several calls, I was told I had to email my intention to cancel. All of this medical information was included in the original email sent in December 2020. At the same time I canceled the credit card they were charging. Thus began the robo calls from ABC financial. Thus began a string of calls and emails to Retro Rockaway manager Mario. Mario maintained I needed to pay for October- December and then he would "freeze" but not cancel the account. I repeatedly asked him to cancel if the freeze did not reflect that it was effective in October 2020. Instead, he sent my account to collections. I continued to receive bills through the mail that NEW CHARGES were added to my outstanding balance- as recently as August 2021. I am still to this day receiving daily robo calls to update my financial information. I spoke with Mario yesterday and he was condescending and told me all of my concerns with the timing and communication (or lack there of) were IRRELEVANT and that I had to uphold the contract. The contract states that a doctor's note is acceptable grounds to cancel the contract. Finally, he agreed I could email my intent to cancel the membership-- so I forwarded him the 2 previous requests to cancel.
The gym itself is fine. Conveniently located, plenty of machines, great personal trainers. The personal training manager is great, too. The overall location manager, Mario, is terrible.

Staff is rude and unhelpful.
Unable to cancel my membership because I have been told several inconsistencies from both management and from staff working there. They are stealing money and it is absolutely ridiculous. I was told I need to cancel in store when I called, when I went to the store they told me I need to contact Mario the manager who ignored my emails. AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT GYM!!!

The gym itself is alright, so many better gyms out there but I guess you get what you pay for.
The customer service is absolutely awful. I have been trying to cancel my membership for almost 2 year and they will not let me do it.
I was living out of state for a couple years and they told me I had to cancel in store. When I finally got back I was told they could not cancel in store and I had to contact the manager.
I have tried contacting him in the past and he answered once and then completely ignored my emails. Recently when I tried contacting him I was ignored again.
This is borderline extortion.
There are so many better options out there who actually care about customer service. DO NOT CHOOSE RETRO.

Been going to this gym since it opened, its a pretty decent gym. But this gym has honestly gone down hill with the new management. The 8am to 8pm hours are pretty ridiculous. Also there is no reason why the gym lockers are not open to the public yet. Every other gym has better hours and lockers available.

Still my gym of choice. Staff is awesome and friendly, and has everything I need to do total workout. Very reasonably priced. Leaks in the roof aside, I'd like to know why EVERY OTHER GYM, in the area, including other branches of Retro are open regular hours, and Rockaway is open 8am to 8pm. Ummm, that works out to over 25 hours a week that's lost to the members, and we're still paying full price! And please don't use COVID as the excuse for it.

I was given an "indefinite" freeze on my account due to the pandemic only to later realize that my membership had restarted and I was being charged without any notification of my membership being reactivated. When requesting a refund, manager Mario agreed to refund me ONLY if I decided to continue my freeze. Since I decided to cancel the account due to the poor communication, he changed his mind and is now refusing to process the refund. To treat customers like this during a pandemic is unethical and extremely unprofessional. He also will only talk to members through e-mail and refuses to talk in person. I think this is because he knows what he is doing is wrong. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM.

The only issue I have is having the t.v reception working on the treadmills . It makes the workout experience easier when watching the t.v. When asked why and when it will be fixed some employeeβs donβt have a clue . Tonight I was told the technician is backed up on fixing the equipment and restoring the t.v reception . I would appreciate if you could either resolve this problem or hire more people . My other concern would be if there is a clean air filters in the fans that they are replaced as well . I would like someone to check that the proper service is being performed .

I would not use this gym if I were you. They do not care about the customer, all about the money. Just charged me 56 for the yearly dues - for two weeks. Havenβt been there in 8 months. Refused to give me my money back. The managers quote βI donβt have to do anythingβ when talking about giving me the yearly dues back. We should be helping each other during the pandemic, not finding ways to take money from the customers. Also dirty, smelly, and the colors are hideous with the reds and yellows.

I go to this gym about 5 times a week and have never had any issues. Usually there are plenty of machines to use, as well as a good variety. It's not a huge gym but it has pretty much everything anyone would need and even at its busiest you can always find something equipment to use. I've always thought it was very clean and when machines break they seem to be fixed in less than a week, which I consider to be timely. The ONLY improvement would be their staff members. For some reason I get more of an uncomfortable rather than welcoming feeling upon entering. I didnt realize how much I had gotten used to it until visiting 3 other retros and a different chain of gym with my friend. The front desk staff shouldn't affect a workout, but lets be real, your mood has an impact on your workout.

Always seems like front desk crew are snobby and machines are gross and dirty! Decent size gym though. TV's on treadmills NEVER work, Belts on treadmills are loose and can't get a good run in because the belts don't operate correctly. They do have some better equipment than some other retro's but they need to keep up on maintenance, cleaning, and nicer employees.

Retro Fitness in Rockaway, NJ is the worst entity I have ever dealt with in my 36 years of life. I tried to cancel my wife's membership which I was paying for and they kept telling me that she needed to call or email. After calling and emailing they said they will still charge 3 months which I was not ok with but whatever. Then they kept charging the account knowingly that it was cancelled and then I changed my debit card number and they kept charging all kinds of fees. I called them and they said that my wife was supposed to got to the original location and cancel the membership in person. We live 2 hrs away. ARE YOU SERIOUS! So is ok for me to pay for my wife membership but I can'r cancel it? What?

I go here about three to four days a week. The gym is getting a little dated from when it was fresh and new. Almost all of the equipment is serviceable however. They don't have a lot of selections for exercise classes. Overall a nice gym, they need a little better attention to detail to get five stars. The place seems to be on autopilot.

Iβve moved so I had to change my prior gym and Choose this because it was the better of the few options. However, retro doesnβt have a lot of variety on schedule. They only have one morning class and two or three late evening. I wished the classes were more spread out in the schedule and had more diversity like barre. The few times I went the instructor didnβt even show. disappointed.

First, I've been a member of several gyms in my fitness career. I can easily identify the areas in which I require to see if the environment will be positive and constructive to my fitness goals. The following outlines a few of these expectations along with my rating of this particular gym.
1. Cleanliness: a clean gym is important. It displays the respect the members/staff has for it's environment. In addition, it's always a plus to be able to begin my routines without having to clean the equipment first. 5*
2. Quality/diversity of equipment: depending on the different stages of my fitness goals. I always look for the right tools to help me achieve the optimum results. This gym certainly has an excellent amount of equipment. 5*
3. Staff/trainers ability and knowledge: rather it's the smoothie bar or a much need tip from the trainers. A positive and motivated staff is required to run a well balanced gym. This gym certainly has some of the best personnel I've met at a gym. Tim is hands down one most knowledgeable and balanced trainer I've met. LaVogue is a great calisthenics trainer around. Let's not forget the other trainers. They all pocess a wide range of knowledge and abilities to help one achieve their goals. 5*
