This place has a thief problem.

Can't trust the staff to handle conflict or help you if somebody becomes aggressive or creepy.

Then there is the matter of your status as a customer. Understand, you aren't a customer at Retro Fitness. You're a hostage.

Once they have you as a member, the staff is basically trained to lie to your face about how to cancel. The goal is to make it as hard as possible for you to cancel so they can squeeze as much money from you as possible.

I received an email on December 28th informing me that the Gym would close on December 31st. This is completely irresponsible of ownership to provide such short notice to all of its members.

There have been numerous posts on both Google and Yelp over the last 3 years criticizing the owners for unethical behavior when members tried to terminate their memberships (e.g. continued billing after memberships were "cancelled").

Keep a close watch on your statements and ensure you are not being double billed!!!

I like how they have options that doesn't force you into a contracts like Planet Fitness. When you commit into a contract places like Planet Fitness will take advantage of you and bill you every month even when you have no balance on your card and haven't used the membership in several months like me. The lady and the staff were very professional and the gym was clean. They even have a shake bar for things like protein and energy.

This gym is nice and super clean, staff is really friendly. But from reading other reviews, there is obviously a problem with cancellations here. I understand that there are a lot of cancellations and refunds to process, but it took me over a month to get refunded or even speak to a manager. Even after I spoke to a manager there was some confusion about what I was actually getting refunded because apparently I wasn’t given correct information the other 3 times I called and cancelled in person. They did honor what I was originally told I would be refunded. Essentially if you’re waiting for a refund- you have to call daily to try to get a manager.

Friendly staff, cheap, and with a fair amount of weights/squat racks, this was a really good gym... Until you tried to cancel your membership.

I cancelled in May. It's now July and they've still kept charging my account. This is a scam and if I hadn't noticed, I would be paying 21.99 a month for their negligence. I called them and they said their manager has to deal with it and he's not in until next week. I am thinking of taking them to small claims court, because this type of behavior should be actively discouraged.

Also fyi they tend to move their "annual fee" around so you get charged one once every 8 months.

I cancelled my membership in 2019. Then I took over from my friend’s membership from November until February 2019. I cancelled everything in February. October came and they started charging me for two memberships so I already owe $132.95. ABC financial calls me every single day to take a payment but they can’t fix the problem of the two memberships. I called the gym 20 times to speak to Andrew the manager, when I finally was connected, he put me on hold for 14 minutes until I hung up. I emailed them and no word. Worse experience ever! And please don’t tell me you’re sorry about my experience, if you want to fix it just cancelled my two memberships. Last time I used the gym was in January of 2019

I canceled my account back in March, didn’t charge me anymore all normal till today, they have charge me twice in October and I’m not a member since March. Also called them and they said Ny membership is not cancel, and I said I went there and cancelled it, he said he can’t do nothing about it and I asked to speak with a manager, he said manager is not there and he doesn’t know when he is there, so unprofessional. I explained him look i cancel my appointment in March you guys haven’t charge me ever since and now suddenly you start charging me and twice a month? Makes no sense. Refuse to help me any further. The best gym I tried. Good and well maintained machinery... customer service is excellent. They have a smoothie bar and child care while you training. Unfortunately, parking lot doesn't have bike rack.

While Retro is an inexpensive gym, the constant state of repair required for majority of the cardio equipment is frustrating. At any given time, half of the cardio machines do not work, nor do the personal TV systems. When a cardio or strength training piece of equipment has a “needs repair” sign on it, it’s usually there for upwards of a month.

Facility is kept clean. While classes are offered, it’s an up charge for your membership.

Unlike other gyms, where trainers are constantly on the floor and providing tips/insight when not providing training sessions, the trainers seem to congregate at the desk on their phones.

I have been trying to get my membership canceled after I completed the yearly membership. I went to the gym and one of the staff made me sign on a paper that the membership is no longer active and they would not be charging any more and when I checked my bank account next month I saw that they are still charging me and the membership isn’t canceled even tho I signed that paper but my mistake was that I didn’t get copy of it. I called them today 4 times and each time they would say we will put on a brief hold and every time is about 7 minutes and nobody answers... if you wanna get charged for a membership for the rest of your life this is the place I would advice you to go to.

I enjoy going to this gym. The gym is clean. There are regular environmental staff members that clean the equipment. The staff also remind the member to wipe off the equipment after use. The classes are great. I also work out with a trainer once a week.

I LOVE MY GYM !!!!!!! FROM THE ROTATING SPECIALTY PROTEIN SHAKES OF THE HOUR WITH SAMPLE SHOTS BEING PASSED AROUND BY THE STAFF !!! I get my MASSAGES , CHIROPRATIC ADJUSTMENTS by Dr. C. along with STEM treatments twice a week. And when the DJ is in the HOUSE MY WORKOUT ARE HEIGHTENED BY THE BASS !! have not visited the MOVIE THEATER ROOM with the treadmills yet but, I will. I have experienced equipment there that I have never seen and I've been working out for over 25yrs !!! gotta get the "RETRO EXPERIENCE FOR YOURSELF" and on occasion there are bagels, fruit and juice not to mention the classes that they have as well !!! Mario(manager) is great and George makes the BEST Drinks with Peanut butter !!!! LOL

I like Retro! It’s a good gym to go to and do your own thing .. they also have PT but unlike other gyms they do not pressure you to sign up for anything you’re not sure about. I would have given it 5 stars if they had a sauna or steam room ...I love their smoothie bar and their customer service is great!

I just finished my 3 day free trial. I am grateful that I was able to tryout the gym first before commiting to a membership where I I’m locked in as in the past.
Retro Fitness has a great look and I found it to be very clean. Some of the machines I tried do not work properly, it seems the touch screen may have been overused. However, once I found a treadmill that worked I stuck to using the same one.
The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. However, they fell short in selling me on membership. On my first day of my free trial membership I wasn’t asked any questions about whether I had been to the gym before or any gym before in fact. I wasn’t even given a tour or shown how to operate any of the machinery. I wasn’t even told about the aerobics/fitness classes that the gym offers or given a schedule. When I was asked where the ladies locker room was I was told, “Do you see that sign over there?” Apart from the fact I’m 5’4” and there were loads of machines in the way of the sign so I couldn’t see, where he could have been pointing to could have been anywhere. This is why it would have been nice to be given a tour and shown some of the equipment that was available. I most likely won’t join Retro Fitness, but I did enjoy my workouts there.

The staff is polite and friendly. Always greets you with a smile on their face. The gym itself is the smallest Retro I've been too so far and also the cleanest. There is a section where you can do cardio and watch Netflix which I think is pretty cool.

Love this gym. I come here every day after work. Workers are very friendly and their is a lot of room for everyone to work out. Even during peak hours like 5-7pm, although it's crowded, I still manage to find room to do my workout. I honestly don't know why people gave bad reviews on yelp. People complain too much lol

You get what you pay for. Retro is bare-bones - they don't even supply towels - and the amenities stop at "working plumbing." No pool, sauna, courts, or anything.

On the other hand, if what you want is a place to do a straightforward workout you'll find everything you need: aerobic and weight machines, plenty of free weights. People come to work out - there's not much of a "scene" here. That's a plus.

I do not hand out five stars willingly but I am at a loss to find the things I don't like about this facility. Before joining, I thought it was too small but I have since come to appreciate it's size far more than the larger gyms I have had memberships. The equipment is well-maintained, the facility is always clean, the staff is friendly and responsive. For example, at another West Orange gym, I had commented to a trainer, who was literally playing solitaire, that all the paper towel dispensers were empty. Rather than using the phone in front of him, he advised me to "yell down to the front desk" and let them know. Conversely, every time I brought a concern to ANYONE at Retro, front desk, trainer or managers, it was dealt with almost immediately. Most importantly, in this environment, I have finally lost the weight, and 4 inches off my waist, that I had not at the other two gyms to which I belonged. Thank you!! So, yes, five stars.

I signed up to this gym a couple weeks before July 1st - when they decided to change their 24 hour schedule. I am beyond disappointed. This was false advertisement and misleading to say the least. If your staff knew the gym was converting its schedule to a more restricted, they should’ve informed me. As I’m sure they knew with ample time there would be changes.

I originally signed up and took full advantage of the 24hrs a day hours. As of July first I was told it wasn’t 24 hrs anymore. I am very disappointed. You guys made a huge mistake and should really reconsider it. It’s also false advertising because i only really signed up because it was the only gym around that was 24hrs. Now i could go back to LA Fitness down the road that’s all brand new and state of the art. They even have a pool! If i want to cancel my membership i would be charged a fee because I am stuck under contract. I didn’t change anything in my agreement to use your gym. Why change your agreement? Again very disappointed. Now i can go to any gym.

This place was falsely advertised as 24 hours. Soon after they started eliminating days when it was open for 24 hours. As crowded and dirty as the gym is we have to get downgraded even more. And now as of July 1st they will be closing down the gym everyday! This is unacceptable. Like the location and the morning staff (around 5 am). The guy that's usually there is very pleasant and actually greets me with a smile (never had i had this experience at the gym). The offers sound nice and I was really interested in joining but of course, I had some questions before jumping into a one year contract. The person on the phone could have found a nice way to say, we'd love to answer your questions in more detail. Why don't you come in and we can sit, talk and show you around the gym? Rather than shutting me down and making me feel like I wasn't important enough. If you not have enough staff to cover your business, that's something that should be addressed. Potential clients shouldn't be treated this way.

Honestly, the location is awesome... but never..... and i do mean never sign up for the personal training. i had some situational changes happen a few months into working with the trainer and they told me that i could not cancel my membership with them. My only option was to freeze my account. They don't give you any for of notification before charges are just posted to your account after the time length of a frozen account ends and just takes the money out even if there are no appointments made with the trainer. Basically got jipped out of 300 dollars with the confirmation of the money being returned and it never was. some of the staff are okay but the way in which business is done sucks.

Idk why people hating so much on this gym. Its not the absolute best gym ever but its not the worst. Been going here for a few months and apart from the 3 repeat offenders (people showing up stank and dank) its a very comfortable gym. Cozy even. Has enough free weights and bumper plates to go around. The machines are adequately positioned. The bar almost always has someone there. Havent tried the classes yet but they look intense.

They Fitness Manager Mario wont take no for an answer and since I signed up fro training just to get the heck out of there, he now wont return my calls for a week with me wanted to cancel. I will be canceling my membership and I will make sure bank knows not withdraw the monthly payment. I would drive back to the Kenvil location just for the customer service.
