I moved to Jersey City five years ago and discovered Surya Yoga soon after. From my very first class, I felt a sense of peace and rhythm at the studio. The classes are thoughtfully structured, with offerings for every level and a wide variety of styles to explore.
The teachers are all truly amazing. I’d like to give special thanks to Ida, who first got me hooked on yoga; Maureen and Steven, whose weekend classes I religiously attended, for challenging me every class; and Gagan, who made me fall in love with Hatha Yoga just as much as Flow.
I was a member until recently, when I moved out of state, and I truly miss the studio, the wonderful teachers, and the warm energy that Reetu and Gagan have cultivated. Surya Yoga is a gem, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to start or deepen their yoga journey.

My first doing yoga in a very long time and my first time ever doing hot yoga. The instructor Safyra was incredibly talented, patient and helpful. The space is very clean aesthetically and energy wise as well. I have been looking for a Pilates/yoga place in JC, this will be my new spot. Definitely recommend.

A Hidden Gem for Yoga Lovers!
This yoga studio is a true find! Located in a super convenient spot, it’s spacious, spotlessly clean, and filled with positive energy. With two large, well-lit studio rooms, there’s plenty of space for everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. The instructors are top-notch—knowledgeable, welcoming, and always creating a supportive atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly, making each visit a pleasure. Plus, the prices are very reasonable, which is a nice bonus! I've had nothing but amazing experiences here and can’t recommend it enough. Whether you're new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, this place is the perfect spot to deepen your practice.

I have been taking classes for the last 3+ years with Asha. When I started I had issues with my neck, back, and knees. I can honestly say that my issues have totally disappeared. I am a senior and my quality of life has improved immensely. I have run in the previous 2 Jersey City annual Lincoln Park 5k’s as the oldest runner. Thank you Asha and Thank you Surya Yoga for the vast improvement in my physical and mental health.

I have always had a live hate relationship with Yoga but the last 2 weeks I’ve been loving taking the classes at Surya Yoga. Especially the Gagans Hatt26 and Wills Barre class. I started this with the new client promo but I will definitely be continuing to improve my flexibility. I am recovering from an ankle Injury and hope to keep getting stronger with each class.

I've been attending this yoga studio for years, and it has truly become a second home for me. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The instructors are not only skilled but also genuinely passionate about helping each student find their practice.
One of the things I appreciate most is the affordability of classes compared to other studios in the area. They offer great value without compromising on quality. If you’re looking to connect with great instructors, I highly recommend taking a class with James or Susan—they're my favorites! Their teaching styles are engaging and inspiring, making every session enjoyable.
Overall, this studio is a gem, and I can't recommend it enough!

Surya Yoga offers a fantastic variety of classes, from breathwork to Hatha and warm Yin, making it an ideal place for practitioners of all levels. I particularly appreciate how the warm Yin classes allow for longer holds, creating a perfect balance between challenge and relaxation, while giving my body the time it needs to open up. The emphasis on breath throughout each practice truly enhances the experience, helping me stay present and centered.
What sets Surya Yoga apart is the genuine dedication of the owners. They are constantly seeking ways to improve the experience and are always open to feedback, which makes me feel valued as a member of the community.
I highly recommend giving Surya Yoga a try! Their two-week program is an excellent way to explore all the different classes they offer, and it’s definitely worth it. Whether you’re new to yoga or looking to deepen your practice, Surya Yoga is a place that fosters growth, mindfulness, and well-being.

Highly recommend. I started hot yoga about 2 years ago when I first moved to Jersey City at Surya and it was easily one of the best decisions I've made. I love this studio and all the people that make it special. From the very beginning I felt welcomed and even though I had very little experience doing yoga prior (let alone hot yoga) I felt very comfortable and supported by all the instructors. Each instructor brings their own unique flavor to the practice (some more dynamic and physically demanding while others are more spiritual and mind focused) which I really appreciated. Whether you're a beginner or experienced yogi, the instructors cater to your abilities. They push you when you need to be pushed and always make sure you're okay. This place has been a sanctuary for me, a space that has deeply challenged me and at the same time brought me so much peace and so much joy.

I have been coming here for almost four months now, nearly every single day. It has been an incredible experience that I look forward to on a daily basis. I have an intense job that demands creativity, problem-solving, long hours and comes with high levels of stress, but practicing hot yoga and mindfulness has truly brought me a sense of zen and reduced my anxiety. Everyone I’ve interacted with at the studio — instructors, owners, and front-desk staff — has been so lovely and pleasant. I can’t imagine going more than 2-3 days without practicing yoga now. Bonus: my husband got hooked on it too, and we now spend like 2 hours each day getting to class and working out which is so sweet.

This is truly a yoga ACADEMY. Fantastic variety of teachers and philosophers. You’ll encounter everything from Western style focusing on anatomy, to Chinese CHI principles, Buddhism, to Christianity, Islam and Judaism, earth based religions, and of course the traditional core Hinduism. The teachers themselves come from all sociolinguistic backgrounds. It’s such an adventure. Truly conscientious space. I learned real yoga and I can instantly recognize appropriation thanks to Surya Yoga Academy.

The check in lady is a bit stuffy and there's no water fountain, which I find odd for a hot yoga business. You have to buy water for $1.50.

I’ve been attending Surya Yoga Academy for almost a year now, and it has been a truly transformative experience. The hot yoga classes are invigorating and have significantly improved my flexibility and overall well-being. The studio is consistently clean and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit enjoyable.
The teachers are exceptional, each bringing their unique style and expertise to the classes. Their guidance and encouragement have been instrumental in my progress.
One of the best aspects of Surya Yoga Academy is the convenience of their app, which makes managing my schedule and booking classes effortless. It’s clear that they value their members’ time and strive to make the entire experience seamless.
I highly recommend Surya Yoga Academy to anyone looking for a dedicated and supportive yoga community. It’s been a wonderful journey!

I have been to Surya yoga for almost a year now. I like it a lot because I feel I join a community with great people rather than going to just classes in those “chained” “commercial” type of studios. I like how Surya provides a wide range of classes ranging from vinyasa, barre to yin yoga as I prefer to diversify my practices if possible. I have tried many instructors throughout the year and would highly recommend Ida, Mackenzie, Will, Maureen, Steven, and Gagan. They are all awesome. I’m pretty sure the other instructors are great too just haven’t had a chance to try. They also have two locations - Jersey City and Hoboken, which is great if you are looking to change the vibe sometimes. Come try it out, you’ll find classes/instructors you connect with. Namaste :)

I have been going to Surya Yoga Academy since 2011 and am so grateful this studio exists. With other choices in the area, I only keep coming here.
Surya is more than just a studio: it's a community owned by wonderful, honest people, Reetu and Gagan, and a range of teachers who are all excellent at what they do - whether it's heated or unheated vinyasa, yin, barre, breath work, restorative - you will not be disappointed.
The studio is very accommodating to it's students. In the 14 years I have been here I've gotten to know many other regulars who have made the Surya community, and I am excited at how active the studio has become with many more students, in particular students that look like me.
I was most disappointed to recently see a negative review and to read a mischaracterization of Surya. That does NOT represent Surya, not Reetu, Gagan or any of the students, at all!

Surya Yoga is a place I've been going to weekly for over a year. Initially, I had an unlimited membership and explored a great variety of teachers and classes, both hot yoga and regular. When my schedule changed, I was only able to come once a week, and I found the perfect fit in the hot hatha yoga class on Sunday taught by Gagan.
Gagan’s class has become a cornerstone of my weekend, something I eagerly look forward to. The challenging static hatha yoga poses, combined with detailed and helpful guidance from Gagan, and subtle music playing in the background (it's the first time I heard music in a yoga class and found the idea great) create a festive yet serene atmosphere. Each class leaves me feeling like a renewed person – more relaxed, grounded, and happy. It feels like all the anxiety and negative thoughts go away with the sweat!
Surya Yoga has truly enhanced my well-being, and I highly recommend it to anyone!

This place deserves 0 star. They don’t serve tea, or play healing music like all the other yoga studios I’ve been. Also you have to bring your own yoga mat. I went to the prenatal yoga class 3 times over two months. The first time I had to fill out a bunch of medical info including my DOB, and sign a liability waiver on their website. They have a buy 1 get 1 free offer, but the 2nd class has to be within 2 weeks. The 2nd time I went was after 3 weeks so I paid in full. I tried to book a 3rd class on their website but it won’t let me log on, so I registered again through their app, which shares the same info as the gym app I used when I lived in Jackson Park LIC, so somehow it registered both my name and my roommate’s name. I only realised this after I booked the 3rd class and didn’t think too much about it cuz busy. When I went to the class today, the instructor (and i suppose one of the owners) Reetu wanted to “talk to me” after I had sit down ready for the class, because she found 2 accounts under my name in the system and said I’m not “allowed” to have 2 accounts. After I tried to explain how user unfriendly their website was and how I had to download the app and re-register and how they surprisingly got my roommates’ name in the system, she was already blaming me for arguing with her and went ahead to offer a refund because she “never encountered such rudeness”and that she “has thousands of students” and I don’t need to come back. Mind you I’m a 24 week pregnant woman showing up on a steamy hot day, and she’s literally telling me to go home when it’s their system that messed up my info. There were actually only 8 people in the class. The instructor also delayed the class because she wanted to combine my accounts and force a refund I didn’t ask for. Based on other reviews, they seem to have done this to other Asian women. Their yoga is pretty much like running a youtube yoga video, same script every time.

The studio is nice, clean. Classes can be a little crowded. There are some good instructors who I enjoy, but I find there are some instructors who are too critical. Melissa and the owner (I think it's Gagan?) single people out. Melissa literally poked me twice with a stereo remote to make adjustments. She proceeded to stand next to me the entire class and critique everything I did. When she adjusted me I said it was "too far", she actually laughed and said out loud for the class to hear "you can do X move but not this?" I am just getting back into yoga and need a lot of practice but I shouldn't feel judged for it. I left the class nearly in tears after feeling bullied for an hour. There's ways to provide feedback while being respectful and discrete. Avoid those instructor's classes unless you're advanced, there are better instructors like Gabrielle, Mariah, or James

I joined a yoga class looking for peace, but instead, I felt picked on and embarrassed. The teacher made me move to the back when there is plenty room in the front. He told me in front of everybody that Im doing everything wrong but refused to help me or correct my posture. Instead he just emphasized on that I couldn’t do what he said and should give up. He also said in front of everyone that I can’t tell left and right. He can’t help with that. What a bully! Everyone saw, and it felt awful. Then, he told me not to come back, saying the class wasn't for me. I don't know if it was because I'm Asian or something else, because I surely didn’t know the guy before, and never said a word before or during the class other than greetings. No matter what he was against he certainly made sure I feel discriminated and unwelcome. I just wanted to fit in and find some quiet, not feel singled out. We all deserve to feel welcome, especially in places meant to make us feel better.
His name is Gagan. He said he owns the studio - not surprising seeing so many people having troubles with money related issues in the review section. Please avoid at all cost. We are taking yoga classes, not a BDSM session.

When I decided to get back into the practice of yoga, I was so happy to find Surya. Surya is the best yoga studio! The entrance is a bit hidden as they don't have a formal store-front (it is on the second floor), but the second you walk in they make you feel so welcome! It's very clean and the instructors are clear and helpful. I always get an amazing workout in the hot yoga classes and leave feeling so refreshed. Masks are optional, and the instructors ask if anyone does not want to be touched (for adjustments), so they are very covid-aware. The location is un-beatable, right by the path and a bunch of businesses, so I would always stop at the market on the way home to grab dinner. Overall I highly recommend this studio for all levels as they give modifications for beginners in all the classes.

They have a very sneaky and sketchy membership cancellation policy. They charged me for 3 extra months at $125/month and aren't refunding my money. The cancellation policy of needing to email a request 30 days prior to cancellation is only stated at the point of purchase, not on their website, not emailed, and even their staff isn't aware of it.
I checked their website, searched my emails and called their staff prior to membership cancellation and they told me I didn't need to do anything and they wouldn't continue charging me after my 6 months is up. This verbal confirmation doesn't hold, and now I am out $375.
What if someone wants to cancel years after they make the purchase? I only had 6 months and couldn't remember to specifically write a request for cancellation 1 month prior to cancelling. This policy should be posted on their website (without having to go through the motions of making another purchase) for full transparency or at least sent out at the point of purchase, so customers can reference their old emails. Especially if the staff is not trained to share this info.
I had enjoyed my time with Surya (besides how crowded it was) before this happened. I wouldn't recommend anyone get a membership at Surya purely based on principle and business ethics.

I've taken 5 classes at Surya Jersey City so far and am really loving it. I've tried a few different studios in JC and Surya is by far the most professional. There is always someone at the front desk, it is very clean and they have a robust schedule with morning and night time classes.
My only gripe is that while they have unheated classes, they still tend to get very hot and humid from the heated class that is happening. So really it's not an unheated class, it is just a class that the heat isn't on in that room in particular. It's beginner level heat maybe. Bring lots of water for whatever class you do.
Arielle is also an extraordinary teacher. I've been practicing for many years but I find that her cues push me to go further. Recommend taking a class with her!
