Sussex County YMCA: Where the color codes lie
Tried a few classes so far:
β’ Tai Chi (Yellow): Half talking, half moving in slow motion. Should be coded beige or βnap time.β
β’ Cycling: Feels like a 1980βs time machine. Music from cassettes, screen not used, giant fans block the already bad sound. Careful by the entrance β the ceiling tile may fall on you.
β’ Cardio Pump with Teresa (Yellow on paper, Red in reality): This one deserves its own warning label. The color chart says βyellow,β but Teresaβs energy level is pure βred alert.β She will absolutely destroy youβin the best way. Great class, great workoutβ¦ just donβt be fooled by the deceptively sunny label.
Fun place overall, but the color coding needs a reality check. π¦

Itβs a good gym, a good amount of equipment in pretty good shape. Pool, recovery rooms, good staff. My only complaint is that the stretching area isnβt padded??? Itβs a very odd choice to use the extremely small mats that they provide. Iβm taller than most people, Iβm over 6 feet and Iβm a giant compared to them, so it makes stretching and calisthenics hard. Other than that, solid gym

I wanted to do family membership during the summer. The lady who showed me the place and tried to help me couldn't find any activity for us besides swimming after certain hours.i am a mother with 8,6, 3 years old and 3 months old.And I have to be in the water with my 8,6,3 years ago, who is going to watch my Little 3 months old???? Why I do have to be in the water if they have 2 lifeguards. " It's like doing family membership but don't do it"
It's sad that family membership doesn't allow you to have activities during the summer.

Nice YMCA. Itβs got a standard gym, basketball court, and pool. TVs are in the weight area. The spa additions include a hot tub, steam room, and a sauna. Staff are friendly! Kidsβ section has an indoor playground with a twisty slide. This Y is worth visiting.

The staff is absolutely the best part. The childcare staff that my kids love, the front desk ladies that are always friendly, my wifeβs trainer is always flexible with her crazy schedule, the swim instructors are amazing with our kids, the custodian that clearly takes pride in what he does, and Iβm sure there are more that Iβm forgetting or work hard behind the scenes. Iβm really happy to have a place like the Y in our town.

My 7yo autistic son came home from summer camp one day and said he "drowned", initially I thought he over exaggerated, but he didn't come home with his life jacket that day, which i found weird. And after that he became sick, flu like symptoms and couldn't go to camp for the week afterwards. The next time my son went to camp, he came home crying, he had another incident in the pool with another boy. At this point, I said it was time to pull him out. I emailed the director and head counselor about this, they tried to talk me out of pulling him out but I didn't trust this situation, something seemed off and of course they said nothing happened. I pulled him out and asked for a refund for the unused weeks and then silence. Their policy states you have to place a written request 17 days before cancelling but it also says there are exceptions. which I believe, this is one.
Update 12/7/2024: I was contacted by the YMCA management and was able to resolve the dispute regarding my refund. Very grateful.

Front office lady did not allow to walk 30 ft through the hallway to have a quick look from a distance at the gym. I think itβs pretty ridiculous that in order to have a look within their visibility from the hallway my female friend had to register with passport (which she did not have on her). I am talking about having a look from the hallway. First of all that level of rigidness and unwelcoming behavior made my friend definitely not to join. Secondly, due to Privacy Laws here in USA it makes me think how her ID information is going to be stored and used for a person who just wanted to have a look which would have taken less than a minute in a clear visibility of the front office. I wonder what kind of procedures YMCA has and what risk is being managed when a guest wants to have a brief look but needs to give up their ID information. It was disappointing. We just left. She is not joining this gym.

The Y aquatics program has been fantastic! The staff (throughout the facility too) is wonderful. Miss Carol has been working with my 3 year old for just a few sessions now and my daughter has learned so much! She has gained so much confidence in the water. I want my kids to have a good relationship with swimming and feel confident around water - the Y aquatic program has done just that! I look forward to continuing my 3 year old's lessons and having my other children join when the time comes.

I really wish I could write a better review since the facility itself was bright, clean, and spacious with plenty of parking. Much nicer then the one we used to go to in Montclair. I didn't see anything for the kids to do if they didn't sign up for a class, but I was ok with that since I was only really interested in swim lessons. The pool was big with multiple lanes and I appreciate that they have a dedicated family locker room in addition to the normal men's and women's locker rooms. I took my son for a swim evaluation and spoke with the aquatics director about signing up for private lessons. He gave me his card and said to email him once I joined. He would then look at the schedule and get us set up. I joined the next morning and emailed him. He got back to me quickly and said he would check the schedule. After a week with no word, I followed up. He apologized and said he had been out of office and would get back to me Thursday afternoon. Not a problem. Thursday and Friday came and went with no response so I followed up again. No response for 4 more days, then finally he asked me if a certain day and time worked. I replied within an hour saying yes and asked how to complete signup and when would classes start. Then nothing. After another week without a response. I gave up and asked for a refund for the membership since I was still within my first 30 days. The support team were friendly and helpful processing the refund. It was quick and painless. Only after I canceled did I get a response asking if I saw his suggested time. It was literally a reply to my email that said it worked and asking when we could start. *facepalm*. I thought I might not have been patient enough, but for reference, the two other swim schools I contacted both responded same day and my son started the same week with one of them.

The YMCA swim team has been amazing for our girls. The coaches are wonderful role models on and off the pool deck. They positively encourage every swimmer and differentiate their swim instruction to ensure each swimmer feels success in the pool. The families involved in the swim program become a part of your everyday life and Friendships and lifelong bonds are made between parents and swimmers. Being a part of this team makes you feel a part of something really great and enables even the youngest swimmers to stay focused on goals while doing something they love.

Staff is always friendly and helpful. Rating is lower because 1. They just need more mirror space in general for lifting and space to do lunges with mirrors, the basketball courts take away a lot of useful room that could be used to expand the weights area. 2. The womenβs locker room is awful. A big section is right in front of the doorway so you canβt really change there with privacy. Teens will often block the benches with their bags. It would be better if there was a womenβs locker room that was adults only. Most of the decent lockers are reserved by swim groups with locks on them so there are few you can use, most are on the lower level which is hard for people with back issues. Children screaming and getting water everywhere is not great either. We really need a clean dry space for non pool exercisers, and I donβt feel comfortable using the family locker room, they should consider making that an adult only female locker room and add some toilets to it. 3. The hot tub needs serious renovation, the jets barely work and it just feels overall a bit tired. The sauna could be bigger too and sanitary rules could be posted as no one seems to sit on a towel while they sweat in it. 4. I miss printed schedules I can take home. itβs easier for planning classes.

If you are thinking of a membership here, the only sanitary place is the gym. The locker room, pool area, showers, floors and toilets are GROSS! The lockers are all rusty. The tile is slimy and the grout is nasty. Only the lobby and gym are decent. Someone should call the department of health. I imagine the bacteria on the floors, bathroom, and lockers would be sky high. Also, the bathing suit spinner is always broken. For the cost of the membership, they should take better care of the place.

Weight room is a little cramped if you want to do olympic style lifts. However, its one of a few gyms that has the overhead lat pullover machine. Excellent selection from management in carrying that piece.
With that being said, if you join The Y, your top priority is the swim pool, steam room, sauna and various classes offered. Compared to your globo gym, The Y always maintains swimming pool at all times. If either the steam room or sauna goes out, you can just bounce... They are both never down at the same time.
If your top priority is heavy olympic lifts, look elsewhere. However, if your other priorities lie with what I mentioned; then you'll be well served!
