Universal Warrior Arts is the dojo (martial arts gym) for you. They have two locations- Bayonne and Jersey City. My kids have been going to UWA for years, and I highly recommend you give it a shot. Whether you have a child who needs structure and discipline, or you want your little one to learn self defense, Grandmaster Austin Wright, Sr. has you covered. If you want to learn traditional karate or you want to learn an MMA style to protect yourself on the streets, UWA has you covered. Grandmaster Wright is an International champion and a published author who has literally written the book on his martial arts style which is a combination of judo, jiu-jitsu, kung-fu, Okinawan karate, and American kickboxing. He learned karate from his father as a child and incorporated the different styles he encountered throughout his life, which includes serving in the United States Air Force. Get in shape, gain confidence, learn to protect yourself, and make friends! Sign up for trial classes today!

Our daughter has been a part of UWA for several years, and the experience has been truly transformative. Through her time here, she has developed greater discipline, self-control, and confidence. It’s incredibly encouraging to witness the consistent support and guidance provided by the coaches, senseis, and Grandmaster Wright. We are genuinely grateful that she’s had the opportunity to learn from such a respected and inspiring group of leaders.

We love it here. My son was very unsure to start because he's shy and nervous, but with the guidance of the teachers and grand master, my son has gained so much confidence and loves progressing and getting better. This is truly a family and all the teachers work hard to see your children succeed inside and outside the dojo.

Absolutely phenomenal experience at this MMA school! Coach Austin Wright is great... His depth of knowledge and years of experience in mixed martial arts are immediately obvious from the moment you walk through the door. He has a unique ability to break things down in a way that’s easy to understand, no matter your age or experience level.. I highly recommend anyone looking to stay active and learn something new to come try out this school. You won’t regret it...

Was a student for 8 years from the age of 7 to 15. I met many instructors during my time there, including Sensei Price, Sensei Jackson, and Shihan (Grand Master Austin Wright). It was a great extracurricular to do. Fun for kids but also becomes more intense and serious as you progress. I genuinely believe that the push ups I did back then every day helped me prepare myself for the career I have in the military. Thank you for the memories Shihan.

I have been in the Martial arts community for over 55yrs.. I truly appreciate the dedication, nuturing and professionalism UWA offers. So much so, that I entrusted Shihan Wright with the tutelage of my 2 daughters, who he has trained for over 15 yrs - One a Black Belt 2nd degregre/ ni dan and the other a lot younger working towards her Brown belt. A stellar school!!

I highly recommend this school for your kids (age no bar). First of all Mr. Wright (Grandmaster /Coach) school is very renowned in Bayonne and he himself is a great person/ coach. Secondly, The other teachers & mentors are super friendly. Thirdly , the class schedules are very flexible and multiple times a week (totally worth your money). Lot of space to do group & personal practices while you are at this school.

For me personally my kid started going to Mr. Wright’s school since he was 2.5 years old (youngest student till date). He is a yellow & white belt holder already. He learned discipline, follow instructions, physical education & various types of Karate training/ moves at this age. Never misses any day as he enjoys a lot being there with other kids to practice/play.

For parents I definitely recommend to put your kids to this place so that kids will learn self defense and discipline in life. For me definitely a Plus Plus and 5 star for this place.
Also, There are lot of free classes he offered for tryouts!!

UWA truly stands out as an extraordinary karate school. From the time my son started in kindergarten to his teenage years, the growth he has experienced under Grandmaster Austin Wright Sr’s guidance is remarkable. Not only does Hanshi provide top-notch karate instruction, but he also instills invaluable life skills to help students tackle bullying head-on. The level of dedication he exhibits towards forms, sparring, and fostering healthy competition is truly impressive. UWA is a place where excellence is nurtured, making it an unparalleled choice for anyone seeking a karate education.

The best martial arts school in Bayonne and Jersey City. I had my daughter in another school a few years ago and I'm glad we decided to make a change. The other school was way overpriced and primarily focused on ripping you off. I love that the kids actually spar and get to utilize what they've learned. Grandmaster, Tom, and the rest of the staff are great and extra patient with all the kids. Thank you for the great work.

I have had a very pleasant experience with universal warrior mixed martial arts over the past 4 months. I have a cousin who is an active participant in the classes (he’s 9 yrs old), and I observe as he takes the class. The instructors Grand Master Wright and Mr. Cush are great when keeping the kids engaged, and offer constructive feedback as the children are developing their martial art skills.

I have also participated in the women’s self defense class here. I was very comfortable and accommodated to as it was my first time. The instructor was more than willing to accommodate my skill level. The instructors clearly posses great skills and are passionate about teaching others.

They have two (2) locations, one in Jersey City and the other in Bayonne. Both are taught by the same instructions and maintain the same standards. Overall, I would definitely recommend these facilities to anyone who is thinking of signing their kids or themself up for martial arts.

If you want a legitimate experience in Martial Arts, this is the place. At first you will be trying to keep up with all the other experienced members. But overtime, you get better. This place will test you and you will feel like quitting. But that is the key to overall success no matter what you want to do: self defense, weight loss, competition.

Unlike most other places that make you do tons of cardio and drills, UWA puts you in competition like conditions. It took 3 months to start sparring with other places I have been a member of but here I was sparring after a month. The sparring has been a unique experience and something that keeps my drive to get better going. This place will challenge you, warp you, and toughen you up.

However, everyone is welcome and the grandmasters and other instructors will work with you and get you to where you want to be. The experience and lessons are worth the expense and worth more than any other type of dojo that doesn't go as farther than drills.

I will be honest and say this is not for everyone. You will have to come prepared, i.e. be up on your cardio, get to a desired weight and maintain it, practice techniques outside of class, and a whole bunch of other stuff. But that is part of the game and goal: to push you. But the staff will never throw you to the wolves. Whenever you stumble or take too hard of a hit, the instructors know and will prioritize your well being. For example, I recently received a black eye; it happens. But the grand master knew to take me out of the ring and knew exactly how to treat it. Instead of having a swollen eye for a few days I walked out of that class with just a discolored area of skin that cleared up in a week.

The instructors do well in relaying constructive criticism that doesn't make you feel small, or weak but makes you feel like you have potential, which ameliorates the drive to better even more. I wish I had started my martial arts career here when I was younger but it's better to be late at this point than ever. The grandmaster offers a trial period after which he discerns if this program is right for you. It doesn't hurt to try...well at least before you start sparring.

If you get hooked, I promise you it will be for the better if you're up for it.

There is one thing all karate students have in common — they all begin their journey as a white belt. UWA is rare; we have Grandmaster Wright, who has a unique gift of physical expertise and generosity of spirit. Grandmaster Wright, Sensei Jackson & Kenson are teaching these children while helping weave them into confident young adults. The instructors work exceptionally well with the children's and genuinely care about them. The program teaches children to work hard and have fun without immediately receiving something in return for their efforts. The perseverance, love and joy of learning is reflected in the children taking the classes. I have really appreciated the focus on skill, but even more so on character building – good sportsmanship, kindness & respect. UWA has a family feel that is welcoming to both new and existing students. They work to develop the students physical, mental and spiritual success. Grandmaster Wright is indeed a highly qualified martial artist who has developed an Institute for the study of martial arts, not just a martial arts school. This is not a school where you go a couple of times and walk away with a black belt. This is a family friendly school, dedicated to the study of martial arts. I highly recommend UWA to anyone seriously interested in martial arts training and especially to families.

My daughter has been attending there for a few years now, It is simply an “AWESOME” environment, we have never once felt anything but the feeling that we are part of a team a family that keeps me as well as my child’s best interest as priority #1.

Basically just a professional, secure, safe place that I do not hesitate for one second leaving my daughter for her class while I run errands etc.
