I love scenic courses and this one is fantastic! We were traveling through the area and I’m so glad we stopped to play today. By far one of my favorite courses and I’ve played most of the top 10 public courses in the US. I need to visit NM more and each time I do, will add this course on my must play list.

Incredibly scenic golf course in a serene setting. Upon arrival you’ll wonder where all the holes are at- they wander back into the hills. Various sets of tees challenge golfers at any level. Michael the starter helpful and friendly. Order food right from the cart and it’s ready for you when you make the turn. I will be back.

Very challenging and exciting course plotted through some bands of sandstone. Radical hills, extreme greens, beautiful layout. I had a blast in march with winter conditions. Conditions in October 2025 were superb. Highest recommendation. Favorite holes are 6,7, 12 and the famous 16, the "stairway to seven"

Played the course in early September and it is an absolutely beautiful but challenging golf course. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Mike, the starter, was one of the friendliest and gave lots of advice about the holes. I would play this course again!

This is a really good track through the desert hills. The greens were very good, as well as the fairways. There had been monsoonal rains which created some washouts, but not an issue. Staff was very friendly and wants you to enjoy the experience. I would mention Michael specifically who went out of his way to make sure i had a good experience.

Overall great service, the starter I met was a very good and helpful guy. He helped me understand the course even though it was my first time. I enjoyed the track it is very tough for the first time around but I am looking forward to coming back. Bring extra balls! Course is in great shape, I have played many courses this summer and can confidently say this was one of the better maintained courses i’ve played yet.

Really great terrain for a golf course. Very challenging. I think the routing is very tastefully done- reminiscent of but much better than Wolf Creek in Mesquite, with its looney toon routing w/ repeated blind shots and fairways that shed balls. The holes here are hard but fair. Conditions are excellent, very impressive. The golf experience is 5 stars.
Unfortunately the player experience is very bad. Major issues: 1) no water on the course 2) staff unfriendly, not warm at all. For example, the pro shop manager came out to ride us (a twosome) about keeping up pace, when we were stuck behind a 5-some. 3) they close the range before all golfers have played. We didn't get to warm up at all... not good on this course!
These are pretty easy fixes- I'd rather pay more money and have a first class experience across the board, TBH.

The course is a top 100 due to topography and views, definitely not customer service. Laurie, who checks you in, could use some work. There was a family in front of us. Grandpa, dad, 12 year old and 7 year old. The grandpa treats them to golf. The dad is honest and says my 7 year old will probably hit 2 or 3 shots all day is that a problem. Pays for 12 year old. About the 7 year old She say, " it the perception he is playing he has to pay" . The course is up and down tiring for everyone. There is no way the 7 year old is going to hit more than 5 shots all day. 92 dollars for a 7 year old. I accept easily I have a spectator I pay fee of 35 dollars for non playing wife to ride. Dad could have kept quiet and paid 35 dollars, but instead was honest, and that's how she rewards him. She tells us the food in the bar, in her opinion, is better than our favorite new mexican food. I had bacon burger $20 not the cost, took 2 bites and threw it away. They have a towel dip bin, asked starter for towels, he said we don't have them you can buy them inside. Seriously, I pay $135 dollars for golfer and rider, and you can not provide a wet rag. The cart lady runs out of water to sell at 11th hole it's 90+ degrees. "I don't have water i haven't restocked." Eat before you go, get lots of water at bar before you go out, no free potable water on course. However, Laurie allowed a man and his dog on the course, which put us 1 hour behind but charged a child $92. Starter tries to help, just doing his job. Top 100 views and topography, definitely not top 100 amenities nor customer service. I play 3 x week where I'm from in Las vegas, and even the municipal courses have better service and amenities.

Fantastic golf course, beautiful carved through the terrain just north of Santa Fe. Challenging but fair, follow the advice on the screen in your cart for hole by hole. Very nice condition, greens rolled nicely , apparently everything tends to break towards the valley. The staff was very nice and helpful from start to finish as well!

Annually, myself and an old college roommate drive across America golfing. I have played this course in years past and it was always a beautiful, fun and challenging course. We played it the last week of May 2025. Sadly it was not the same course. The greens are dead and its like putting on concrete. The fairways are in horrible shape. We had to move our balls to a patch of grass on almost every shot. So sad, what happened to this course. On a side note, the staff here are the friendliest people and service is great.

This is a beautiful golf course. I've played here several times, and it is very challenging. The views are amazing no matter where you're at on the course. The greens are fast and depending on pin placement can be exceptionally difficult. The staff at the bar & grill and clubhouse are exceptional. Very enjoyable course.

Played there for my birthday 4/12/25. What a ridiculously hard course! Layout was very challenging and it was hard to see where things went for a first timer. Super fun experience, but it was not in the best shape or even in good shape. It was $100 to play and I’d have to say it wasn’t worth it at this time. Would love to see it at its best.

Full price for what you could call winter conditions at best (had to move off multiple tee boxes, avoid sandy fairway areas, and move balls away from green issues). I was part of a group of 2 solos forced to ride in the same cart after requesting not to. This was the first tee time of the day without a full tee sheet for the day. Returned from 18 and there are no less than 20 carts still available. The lady running the place doesn’t seem to be too welcoming. Better courses in the area to give your money to IMO. Great setting and course layout. If there was more realistic view of their course and welcoming staff it would be a 5 star even with below standard conditions.

This is a very interesting course to say the least. We played on a sunny day in mid March. The front nine was very nice with no wind and made the course very playable. Right at the time we made the turn. The winds kicked up to being 20 to 30 miles an hour and things changed big time to say the least. I’m assuming it is windy all the time at this course because of how exposed it is. This is a warning of sorts if you do not like playing in wind, this course may not be for you as it becomes incredibly challenging and borderline unfair. I actually hit the ball incredibly well that day and still struggled to post around that even remotely reflected how well I played. I’ve read a bunch of negative reviews on here about the staff, but I found everybody there to be very nice, especially the starter. My biggest complaint about this course is that the design of the greens is simply out of whack, especially given the climate of the location. It was very dry in March to say the lease and I’m assuming it’s always that way. The greens are not getting watered and there is so much ululation and thus There are areas of the greens that are completely dead. I think it would’ve been much smarter to design the greens to be much flatter so this did not happen. I’m sure the greens are much different story in the summer when the irrigation is turned on, but the fact that this is in such a dry/cold climate Means that that isn’t the case for much of the year. I did give it five stars because I had a really great time and it is definitely a fun and interesting course.

Well, where should I start. Everything was fine until we got there and they informed us that it was Cart path only, something I wished they would've mentioned over the phone when I initially set up T time.. The other issue we had was this Very Rude aggresive toned female staff member who met us at the turn waiting to tell us that we were 30min behind pace of play. Definitely not our fault when first off they paired us up with a 80 year old gentleman who also was not informed over the phone that it was cart path only, And he struggled to walk to his ball. We tried to explain to her the situation she totally dismissed us with her very unprofessional response. I should've known better than to come here after reading some past reviews on this certain staff worker. The back 9 was not enjoyable due the the conversation that had taken place. Funny thing is that no one was in front of us and the people behind us didn't have to wait on us. We where walking off green when they tee's off, We definitely were within the flow of the game considering the Cart path only rule. Im assuming she just wanted to get home asap. Now, the course is indeed beautiful and my colleagues and I have played here a while back and were fortunate back then not to have dealt directly with this staff member. This is the last time we play here until some changes are made. Not that it would matter to them anyway, Lol. We've played just about every course in New mexico and this one is the worst in customer service.
PS, Im curious if more time is given (pace of play) on Cart path only days.

Course is beautiful, great setup. Only down side is they MAKE you share a cart with someone else. They don't even give the option to pay for your own cart. I would kind of get it if they were limited on carts, but they have a massive cart barn, and on the day I played, there were about a dozen unused carts out in front of the pro shop when I finished my round. This is the only course I've ever been to that forces you to ride with another person, without the option to pay for a cart of your own.
And it was not a good experience.

Update: Played out here again as a single, and despite the course being in excellent condition and a phenomenal layout, I will never play at this course again. The starter and pro shop mess with and change tee times, I booked a tee time as a single at 810 and they changed it to 820 with 3 other players. They refused to let me go out as a single. Just absolutely awful customer service and terrible policies.
Bottom line, great course. Horrendous staff and policies.

The course is in great condition and I like the layout. That’s about the only positive thing I can say. DO NOT PLAY HERE if you want to pay an extra green fee for your 2 year old to ride in the cart. Also bring your own water because there isn’t any on the course or even a beverage cart available. The water they supply in the snack shop smells of sulfur and not drinkable. Customer service is non- existent. The woman in the golf shop who I believe is the golf shop manager was not very nice either. I really do not know why I was charged an additional golf fee to have a 2 year old ride in my lap but apparently they think it’s ok to charge. We canceled our tee time for the next day and are never coming back. This place is only for single men and they do not encourage families or young kids to be out on the course. Also be prepared for your bag, clothes, and entire body to be covered in dirt. All the cart paths are this fine dusty gravel so it makes a mess of everything. I never write that many reviews but this place needs a management overall. The company who runs it has obviously no experience in customer service.

Was a great day, course was in great shape! And in #8 at 172 yards I got my first ACE ever and Laurie and Jerry from the course were extremely nice and gave me a signed celebratory flag to take home with me. I like the course itself. I live in the Española area so I wish I could golf here more , but every time I go here I feel so unwelcome by staff . I constantly get asked if I’m local by a bunch of white people who work here . Staff is unfriendly and rude . I wish as a native New Mexican and by a golf course owned by one of the local Native Pueblo’s I wouldn’t feel unwelcome for not being white .

We visit NM once a year . Several years ago we took Black Mesa off our list of courses to play because it was in terrible shape. I am happy to report, we gave it another chance this past week and we're glad we did. Fairways and greens were in very good shape! The traps and areas around them could use some work but otherwise it is worth playing! A good value! We'll put it back on our list of courses to play!!

Course was in great shape. Greens were a bit slow but still challenging. The starter was great, friendly and knowledgeable. Only negative is we took our 7 year son with us and they do not allow spectators so they charged us $90 for another green fee for my son to just ride in the cart. Lady in the pro shop was not friendly about it. I asked if they have just a spectator fee as he is not playing and she snapped by only saying “No, so are you gonna pay for him?” I told her we just drove an hour and a half to play so we don’t have a choice. We had three players so it was not like we were asking for an additional cart. Once we paid, no thank you or anything.

Overall, course was great. Just don’t take anyone who is not playing unless you plan on paying a full green fee for them to ride in the cart.

Our favorite course in NM has always been Paako Ridge. But it has gotten unaffordable for us. Today we played at Black Mesa and it was amazing. From start to finish, it was a great experience. We got there late as their last tee time is at 2pm. The sales lady at the desk (I forgot her name) was checking in several golfers so it was well past 2pm when she waited on us. She allowed us to play and it was so much fun. The course is this beautiful green landscape in the middle of the desert. The fairways are wide and the grass is perfect. The greens were really nice too. Almost perfect. Good roll, very few ball marks and enough undulations to make it challenging. The course is in Espanola, not Santa Fe. We have always played in Santa Fe but from now on it will be Black Mesa as our go to destination in NM.

My wife and I played 18 holes here on July 28th 2023. I play this course about once a year and I was just blown away by how immaculate the fairways and greens were.
Greens were on the fast side which was nice. Players beware: this course has dramatic undulating fairways and undulating greens. Every single hole is unique and surrounded by the beautiful rustic New Mexico landscape.
There is a driving range, putting and chipping green, and the staff are very amiable. Ask the starter where the actual Black Mesa is and he will point it out to you on the horizon, a sacred place for the Native Americans that own this beautiful course.
Only cons are the dirt cart paths and a gravel drive from the main road. But not really a factor unless it's pouring rain which is very rare. Carts have built-in GPS.
The course plays long but has 5 separate tee boxes. The experience is very quiet and serene. I highly recommend this challenging course, definitely worth the drive.

I haven't had the opportunity to play here, but the customer service over the phone contradicts what others have said.
I received a cell text that I had a tee time for the following day but I laughed because it would be a trek for me to make it there from my current position in Houston, TX.
I called the pro shop and spoke to an extremely nice woman who clarified the wrong phone number was tied to the tee time and assured me there were no advance fees charged to hold the time.
I haven't traveled throught New Mexico in a long time but if I ever do I'll try to stop to get some holes in.

This is usually an absolutely great public golf course. The staff are helpful, friendly, and professional. I played here yesterday, Saturday May 13, 2023 and the course is in very bad shape. The dirt and gravel cart paths are really rough, i.e. washboard, throughout most of the course. Even at slow speeds stuff will bounce out of your cart. The tee boxes have lots of uneven ground, lots of small dips so that it is very difficult to find a tee location where both feet and the ball are on the same level. The fairways have a lot of green spray paint patches hiding the significant damage. Most of the "sand" bunkers have the same consistency as the cart paths (e.g. I couldn't even leave spike marks from my shoes in the "sand"). The greens are a fairly even mix of sand and grass. I hope this is just a slow start for this course due to the long and cold winter we have had. If not, then the course needs to be closed for at least several weeks to allow it to recover.

Beautiful golf course. We played Saturday Oct 16th, 2022. First group off as a twosome. We were expecting to be paired as they were pretty upfront on their website about pairing people to make foursomes. (Not an issue for us) We felt like the course was ours and that was awesome. The course was in perfect condition. You couldn't ask for a more perfect day pertaining to the weather. I want to give a shout out to Joseph for being so personable and taking the time to make sure we had everything we needed. Great dude. The value you get at their price point. 89$ for this beautiful course on a weekend morning is spectacular. Black Mesa is on par with Paako and Black Mesa honestly fit my eye better. Fantastic course at a value price!! I was hesitant because of hearing about the bad conditions in the past but the course blew me away. Yes, there is still a little bit of work to be done to get the fairways in perfect shape, but the course is very playable right now and a lot of fun. Scenery is spectacular, fairways are undulating and tricky, greens run nicely, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. They could charge twice the price (currently approx $75) for what they provide. I loved every minute of it. If you are undecided, go for it! You won't regret it.

Truly a GEM. I drove 45 minutes to get here from my hotel and I would have driven double that. They get senior water rights and keep this place nice and green. Grass does have some dead spots but it’s the desert ! Some very tough greens with 1 foot drops by the flag placement add to it. May 2022.

Came down from Colorado for the weekend to play this course and Towa. One of the few golf courses that the actual course is more beautiful and amazing then the pics on the website. The view from every hole was breathtaking. Course was in perfect shape. I've played (public) golf courses in 10+ different states and would rate this course in the top 3. We will definitely add this to our Spring 2022 Golf outing trip!

I wanted to surprise my husband and brother by scheduling a T time for this Father's Day weekend, we were spending the weekend in the area and they had never played this course before so I scheduled both Saturday and Sunday, Saturday was for husband and brother and Sunday my nephews drove down to play with them and my sister in law and I decided we wanted to join them and ride only not play which we have done many times on weekends and holidays we've never spent more than $15 ,to $25 for carts to ride well this day Father's Day cost us $160 to ride because supposedly they had more players than carts which was NOT TRUE there were not many players on the course, no one was waiting or walking and when our session ended the parking lot was not full and plenty of carts available this reminded me of price gouging during the pandemic it was not a good feeling having to pay so much to be with our family and wanting to take family photos it's a shame when someone can feel good about taking advantage of family this way. We paid it, got some good pictures and had our family time because what other options did we have when we just wanted to be together?

Course is in great shape and as difficult as ever. Tuff hole locations. Must stay on the fairway to have a chance at a flat stance. Rough has tall grass that kills distance. Fun course to play with great views.

You need to check this place out. If you like desert golf this is it. ! If you like a challenging course, this is it ! And for only 60 bucks you get golf and a cart. Definitely recommend NOT walking, it will wear you out. Every hole is a masterpiece cut among stunning rock formations and arroyos. Right now the course is in excellent shape and the temps are a lot cooler. I'm a 10 handicap and shot an 85 from the whites (6300 yds) It's a must to keep it in the fairway. Nice friendly staff too.

This course once had excellent service; however, I played a round of 18 on a Friday and was rushed and kicked out because they wanted to close early (4:30). The management was unwilling to work with us and did nothing to resolve the wrong. I will not be returning back and I highly suggest other take their business elsewhere.

Amazing views everywhere you look! Think again if you're planning on playing from the black tees. I made that mistake on number 1. Forced carries on all holes. Greens are absolutely diabolical. The slopes and contours of the greens are like rollercoasters. This is a course where you have to put it exactly where you're aiming or you'll pay dearly. Overall course conditions for winter play were great. Fast greens nice fairways. Definitely a course you will always remember! Thanks for a great round

This was one of the most challenging and beautiful courses I have ever played. Probably paid as much in lost golf balls as I did for a round of 18 but it was worth it. Awesome challenging course in excellent condition. Each hole has decisions to make instead of the regular hit your drive in the middle and then approach the green. There wasn't a bad area on any fairway and the greens were immaculate and undulating. So while the putts rolled true one had to put their green reading skills to use. Highly recommend playing this scenic and beautiful course!

I played here today and loved it! The course is a serious challenge from any tee box. This is a high desert mountain style course with a lot of elevation change, very rolling terrain, adventurous tee and approach shots. The course is in excellent shape and the greens are simply divine!! The tee boxes and fairways are in great shape and beautiful. You had better hit your targets because you will probably lose your ball if you don’t!
I will come back on future trips!

Poor conditions , weeds and daisies in the fairways.
No directional aids. Dried mud in fairway and green side bunkers. Many many blind tee shots, 2nd shots to the greens.
Better courses nearby.
Big deception with the photo on the web site.
That is a very old photo.
This could be good if they took care of it.
They didn’t even have drinking water on the course, and it gets 90 degrees in the afternoon
