It's a pretty nice facility although something was off with the chemistry tonight in the bottom was really slippery and the whole area smelled like sulfur.

The big windows all around the pool give you great exposure to the mountain views and clouds and sunsets while you're working out which is quite a treat.

A couple of the bathrooms were out of order so there was only one changing room open which was a little inconvenient. Overall a nice place to go though.

This gym is truly wonderful! The staff are incredible, and it has everything you could possibly need, including childcare services. It's fantastic! My child absolutely loves it.

Love the gym and staff overall but, seems like a different machine is always inoperable and may take some time to repair. One machine in particular (assisted pull up machine) has been down for months and seems to be abandoned in place. Members pay a hefty membership fee, the least they can do is ensure machines are carefully looked after once they break down.

This location is by FAR the loudest I've been to and ive been a defined memebr for 25 yrs and been to most other locations. What sucks is I generally like this location bc of the staff and the regulars but both the music over the main speakers as well as the zumba classes are usually BLARING. The class instructors leave the door open and its so loud on top of the main gym music. My noise canceling earphones can't wven compete so then I get so overstimulated trying to drown out both sounds by turning my music up and I my nervous system just feels fried. I hate to be a complainer and I've tried for so long to juat deal with it but what may not be a problem is a real thing for others with noise sensitivities or conditions that cause them to be overstimulated.

Sad to see a new club with always being under repair and equipment I poor condition.. they like to charge and management just seating around as members abuse equipment and taking up equipment to prevent other from using as they seat on their phones and other just move on with out getting a work out or they filming themselves and blocking areas ., drop membership and found a better gym where people do work out and not join a social meat club

This location is the least impressive to go to. The restrooms are always dirty, inoperable, or overflowing. Multiple pieces of equipment are in operable or in poor condition. Many of the other clubs are getting newer equipment and this club is stuck with broken and tattered stuff. I’ve been to the club in Santa Fe and they are constantly cleaning and fixing machines and this club that’s a rare site to see. Pretty unfortunate for the amount of money you pay for the membership.

I just signed up less than a week ago. This was the 3rd facility I came to.
Pros: gym equipment; hot tub was actually hot; new shower curtains
Cons: music was so loud that I could hear it through my noise canceling ear buds; swimming pool was extremely salty (I almost thought it was an actual salt water pool); I counted 5 people not shower prior to swimming (including an employee there on his day off - he was talking to staff that was working - that I witnessed working out prior to getting in the pool).

Its easy to sign up, they lied about how to cancel. Good luck canceling with them, they said I had to send in an email and an explanation with my phone number to cancel. I did that. Then , they continued charging me for several months
.I called any they then said I had to come in and cancel in person. THEY ARE THIEVES AND LIARS. DO NOT TRUST THEM.

I’ve had some rough experiences at other Defined Fitness locations, but the Rio club has been a completely different experience. The employees here are friendly, professional, and make the gym feel welcoming. The manager of this club is clearly making great improvements, and the whole team deserves to be praised for the positive environment they’ve created.

I especially want to highlight a particular employee at the kids club, her name is Brooke and she does such an amazing job with the kids. She’s so kind, attentive, and makes me feel confident that my son is safe and well cared for while I work out. Knowing he’s in great hands gives me peace of mind, and that makes all the difference.

Thank you to the Rio club team for going above and beyond!

Was here, along with 10 or so others last Saturday June 7 at 5:30 am but nobody showed up to open. This has happened multiple times on a Saturday or Sunday since the gym first opened in 2022. After posting this review, gym responded quickly acknowledging the problem and will try to do better.

Update.. Sunday Aug 17, 5:45am.. again no one to open… this isn’t hard.. Manager, get a camera to monitor the front desk and get up to see if anyone has opened up, if not get down here.. our time is worth at least that. Employee could have good reason for not being there, but management is responsible to cover when employees can’t. Join this gym for great experience other than opening time.

They keep raising the membership dues yet certain areas of the club are pretty filthy. Worst of all, and randomly, no one will show up to open the gym. You could be waiting minutes. You could be waiting hours. This morning, I have been waiting for over an hour. Huge waste of time and very frustrating. I’ll call other locations asking if they can help or contact someone who can, and I always get the same response: there’s nothing we can do. Horrible. As you can see from other reviews, this happens with regularity and it has been happening for a while. Management promises to fix, but they won’t. I resisted leaving a bad review, but after experiencing it numerous times, I had to. Unfortunately, this is the only even semi-convenient gym in my area. If you have access to another gym, spend your money elsewhere.

Kind of confused why no one is ever here to open the gym on time. You guys hiked up prices but can't find someone reliable to open on time? And it's not like a couple minutes it's like 40 minutes late. Musics always loud and it's never clean.

Hours at this location are always a struggle, especially opening up on the weekends. They need to have someone accountable that will be here on time. They were supposed to open at 5:30 today and I’m still here waiting… for as much as you charge every month you don’t really value your member’s time.

My issue with this facility is the women's shower room. They could really benefit by investing in a power washer to blast the scum off the walls, the drains have a strong smell of urine very poor ventilation.

The gym is beautiful and the trainers are excellent. However, it is very poorly managed. The A/C in the Group X room has been out, and it's the hottest part of the summer. Same thing happened last summer. Lockers and showers are not clean; I don't shower there. The Group X room isn't regularly cleaned and has balls of hair all over the floor, along with black spots of gum on the wood. The gym seems to have lots of problems keeping the equipment running.

And then there are the "new rules" for the Group X classes that were read to all participants, apparently after an accident at one of the other clubs. After just two weeks it's clear that they are not being enforced or followed. You're now on notice of this. People are still up and about dragging bars and weights all over before the class is finished, creating at a minimum distraction, but also a dangerous situation where people have been stepped on or hit with weights. Some of the trainers have made it clear that they don't intend to enforce. What good are these "rules" if they're not enforced?

Glad to see new GM at last and hope he can make a difference.

I really wish I could give Define a 5-star review, but I’ve been left pretty disappointed. After being out of the gym for three months, I returned only to find out that my automatic payments hadn’t gone through. I take full responsibility for that, but I was surprised that they weren’t willing to waive the late fees or work with me at all. Most places are willing to be a little flexible to keep your business ,but that wasn’t the case here.

That experience just sealed the deal for me. I’d already been on the fence after they raised their prices, especially since the equipment and amenities are frequently down. It’s frustrating to be paying top dollar when the quality doesn’t match the cost. They also don’t offer perks that other gyms do, like guest day passes, which just adds to the feeling that the value isn’t there. Between all of that and the lack of customer care, I paid the balance including late fees and decided it was time to take my business elsewhere.

Was anyone notified that you guys were going to hike up the prices? I wasn't. Though you state letters were sent out. $53 a month is extremely steep. Not everybody uses the daycare, the classes, the pool. You really should have Multi-Tier pricing.
With such a high rate for your gym, are you now going to extend your weekend hours? Maybe hire people to clean the equipment, the walls, the beams?
Highly disappointed

Been going here for awhile, I love it , very clean, happy with all the machines and people.
However for the past few weeks the girls (3 of them) that work on Monday mornings are so rude. No saying hi and it feels like I’m interrupting their conversation. The guys and everyone else are amazing and always tell me bye and hi.
The girls are not friendly at all.

Dead cockroaches in the underheated hot tub. No place to put towels or belongings in the pool area at all. Water in the men's showers comes out at a trickle and no possibility of manual temperature control. No metal shelves in the shower, forcing users to place their soaps and shampoos on the ground—a trip hazard as requiring awkward bending down on a slippery surface. A general sense that these areas are seldom or never cleaned. It is astounding that these things were not thought through when the place was designed. Will be dropping membership soon.

I’m giving the Rio Rancho club 5 stars because of some of the daycare workers. They do art projects with the kids, and they play with them. That makes it easier for me to enjoy exercising, and it makes me want to continue my membership. Thank you to those daycare workers who are engaged and care! I appreciate it.

Pretty good gym but the locker room, mens at least, is rarely cleaned and often filthy.
Diminishes the entire experience. What else isn't being cleaned properly?? Minor peeve is the shower water temp cycles between scalding hot and cool any time someone uses water elsewhere in the facility. Call a plumber!

This could be a great gym with a little bit of effort and problem solving

Update September 2024:

It has been months since the comment below promising improvement. The men's locker room remains disgusting. The only change is monthly fee went up. How about using some of the proceeds to clean up! I'm now showering after I get home. Gross.

Update June 2025. Locker rooms still gross, like board of health violation gros. Showers still vacillate between cold and scalding hot. They leak and waste a LOT of water. What does it take?

I've been going to this gym for about 3 months, mostly for swimming. The pool is nice. I do enjoy it more when it's clean. However, even when its clean theirs still a good amount of broken off concrete at the bottom. When it is dirty, it smells of fishy sweat, lol. I do think it would be good to clean more often. The hot tub has been closed for more than 3 months. The staff is super nice! I always appreciate it when they are kind. The only issue I see here is the cleanliness. The bathrooms are pretty gross. I've found feces on the floor and lots of dirt and scum in showers.. The toilets are usually dirty. If they worked on that, I'd give this gym 5 stars.

I rated this gym a 5 two years ago but am now changing it to a 1. I had been doing a lot of swimming like 3 to 4 times a week for about 2 yrs but have been focusing more on weight lifting the last few months for several reasons. One of the reasons is that I really get grossed out with the pool and the concrete surrounding it, it is always so dirty! Ive asked a couple times and have been told different reasons one of which is that their vacuum broke and they haven't been able to buy a new one. I think its mostly from neglect, I don't think they actually clean very often or at all!
6/21/24 Would it be possible to post gym etiquette signs? I have had to confront other gym members on at least 3 different occasions for using multiple pieces of equipment at once, or occupying equipment and just talking. Unfortunately people are very inconsiderate and think they're the only ones that are using the gym, they don't have a clue about being considerate of others. My time is very valuable and I have to get my workouts when I have the time.
4/10/25 - The hot tub is down again, I think I could count on one hand the days it's actually been open over the last 6 months. Also one of my favorite pieces of equipment, the assisted pull up machine has been down for about 3 months, I guess there's no intention of fixing it, seems like it takes forever to get equipment repaired. I'm really getting tired of this gym for the amount of money we pay, I've been visiting the newest gym in Rio Rancho lately even though it's really far from where I live.

I started going here because I figured paying the little bit extra would get me a workout experience that included a clean space, well cared for equipment and the ability to use the hydro massage chairs whenever Id like. Since then they raised their prices without telling me, proceeded to charge me 70 dollars extra 1 month out of the year and have put passwords on the recovery chairs so you have to ask a person at the front desk to use them and only for a limited 10 minutes. Several of the spaces and lockerrooms are usually filthy, one of the simple machines that I use for my routine has been out of order for over a month, with a sign on it that says that it would be repaired 3 weeks ago. The last time I was there the whole place smelled like noxious burning plastic fumes. The only reason I havent switched to a different gym is the proximity to work and home that come with my membership. Its making it really difficult to be on my fitness journey because I geniunely loath going into the building. Please do better, and of youre going to raise prices/ make millions off of me and my fellow city peoples while working something like massage chairs into your business plan and doing the bare minimum to provide an excellent experience, the least you could do is make sure I dont need to ask for permission to recover for as long as I need or stress about the equipment being out of order for months at a time.

Maintenance needs not being addressed. Several reviewers have mentioned some common concerns and the response is a “thank you and we will address these problems.” What is the problem management?
1. Hot tub is consistently “out of service.”
2. Control valves in at least the men’s showers do not even begin to work properly. This is frustrating and results in huge water losses because they cannot be turned off.
3. The shower floor is dirty and NOT being cleaned regularly.

There are issues with certain amenities and cleanliness at the Rio Club. It is great to have a gym at this location, the staff, usually very helfpul, but I might have to cancel my membership, if certain things cannot get addressed.
1. The hot tub has been BROKEN FOR MONTHS. Maybe a new contractor that can actually fix it? The only time it was on this month, the giant vent next to it blew a gross grey dusty film into the foam bubbles.
2. The men's room sauna has NEVER BEEN HOT. There is no dial to turn up the heat, which I can understand because it could get possibly be left on, but the heater obviously broken. It has not been hot in the sauna once, for over a year. There is also a 2'' space under the door letting out any potential heat, not to mention the floor is always dusty and dirty.
3. The water pressure in the showers is usually a laughable drip. They are constantly full of hair. The knobs do not make sense. The water fluctuates from cold to hot with no consistency.
4. The cheap benches in the locker room are about to break, and there are only about four of them to begin with. It would be great if the inside of the lockers were cleaned as well.
5. The pool deck and inside the pool should be vacuumed and cleaned daily. Bandaids, dirt, murky. I feel like the pools always get secondhand attention.
When you spend over $50 a month, with a price increase they did not tell you about, and the locker rooms already don't have towels or soap, all these other little things start to add up. It is disappointing.

Good: convenient, machines are generally functional, staff friendly. Bad: all TVs are on same channel which is always sports, locker rooms often not clean (excess water in showers + hair, etc), bathrooms not stocked, hot tub often out of service, etc.

Update 7 months later - pics of the women’s locker room showers. Still gross (worse than when I made the original post) and a real slip hazard. Three of four showers consistently leak even in the full off position. The staff at the front desk were nice and said a manager would reach out, but he never did.

Bait and switch sales tactics. Did not provide fiduciary responsibility to agreed upon services and membership. Asked for a month to month membership for a 17 year old that wasn't going to be here for a year. Going into military in 9 months. At enrollment we're told that's what we had set up and set on auto pay, paid for 2 months in advance. Two months later we went in to cancel and we're told we couldn't till the next month after the 1st but before the 25th. Nothing said about billing at that time. Went in the next month (approximately 2.5 weeks later) to cancel, we're told that it was an annual contract, that our payment was late (they never set up the auto pay), that we had to pay service and late fees for the auto pay that they never set up, that we had to pay a $42 96 annual fee they never mentioned before, never recived a contract before we went in to cancel, and they charged an additional $107. 44 to cancel.

Response to your response: What does what you said have to do with what our issue with your company is. You charged us a Late Fee - But we asked to set up Auto Pay and there was enough money on the Auto Pay card to pay. Your agent did not set it up correctly, unbeknownst to us, and you never contacted us. Insted, when we came in a Second Time to cansel, you charged us late fees and did not take any responsibility for your Agent not doing their job correctly. In addition, we never Once recived any comunication or email about any payment being late. You owe us the late fees.

I started my membership here a month and a half ago because this location is closer to home. Chuze fitness is superior at almost half the cost. For the same cost as Defined Fitness, you get way more perks like taking a guest as often as you want. Defined fitness needs to do better, or Chuze fitness will put them out of business. R.I.P. It was incredibly frustrating this morning when I arrived at the gym promptly at 5:29 AM, only to find a short line of fellow early risers eagerly waiting. At 5:30, the scheduled opening time, the doors remained firmly shut. Patiently, I lingered, hoping for some sign of movement. By 5:45, with no change in sight, I reluctantly dialed another gym's number to discover if they were experiencing similar issues.

I explained that the gym I was at had not yet opened, likely due to the person responsible oversleeping. I understand it was early, but this delay disrupted my planned morning routine. With a list of errands and appointments waiting, starting late due to this unforeseen obstacle was beyond frustrating.

Having to drive an additional 15 minutes to the alternative gym location compounded my irritation. What should have been a smooth start to the day turned into a scramble to rearrange my schedule. The reliability of gym opening hours is CRUCIAL for those of us who plan our days meticulously. This incident not only set me back but also left me disappointed in the service provided.

Clubs are great (locations, gyms and great indoor pools), but I am only giving 3 stars due to their predatory fees and not being kind to military members. Specifically, my credit union across the street, US Eagle, decided to change their credit card vendor. Upon checking in to a workout rather than just ask me to change my credit card, Defined Fitness used this as their opportunity to charge my wife and I $47 in junk fees. I’m sad because I really like the gym but have canceled indefinitely over this. On the bright side I have an expensive home gym, this gives me motivation to use it instead. :)

But since Sunday up to yesterday, Saturday, the filth in the shower room is still the same filth I saw 6 days ago. I wonder if they even clean the shower stalls. Same hairs were still there. Same hair colors were still on the walls, the curtains were barely hanging since the hooks are torn. No soap dish, no hooks for towels. But what I can’t stand is the filth of this place. There are sand on the floor of the swimming pool. Now, both showers in the pool area are not working, and then, yesterday, the hot tub is closed. What’s next?

The good:

It has a nice size gym and even with how busy it is, usually you can use the equipment you need.

The bad:

The staff is generally indifferent at best, rude at worst. The customer service or generally nicety is not present.

The bathrooms are not cleaned well, there is never any soap.

The sauna at this club is by far the worst design you could have, every other Defined at least understands the utility of bench height in a heated room (not to mention the wooden benches are already breaking).

I have family that visits out of town and when I was at Sports and Wellness they made it reasonable for a day pass (they would usually just do it for free, but I don't expect that at most places). For Defined, if I want to bring an out of town family member for a workout it costs $20! The monthly membership is $40, are you crazy! I would expect something like $10. But half your dues for one workout with family is just gouging. And the staff made a big deal like I was crazy for bringing family in (goes into the pile of rude experiences I have had with different staff here).

Speaking of gouging, I lost my card on file and had to get a new one. And even though I paid me dues when they were due. I got charged a $26 processing fee because the auto draft didn't work. I had to pay more than half my dues EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T LATE! Now, they told me that this wasn't their fault, it is the company they use to do auto drafts, but brother, you chose this company! Take some ownership for taking advantage of me.

All in all, I wrote an essay just to say. There is some good here, but a whole heck of a lot of bad.

I don’t like the weekend hours. I think they should stay open till 10pm like the rest of the week. Because it so crowded all the time . The other issue, is they blame everything on the accounting dept. I wonder if there is even an accounting dept.
And the showers leak our membership prices better not go up because of this. Rio Rancho water is very, very expensive.

The gym itself is good, but could be better. I have been a member there for over 2 years. They have a scale that estimates body fat. I asked a trainer if I could use it. I was told I would have to purchase a jump start training package which seemed a bit harsh. I sent a message to the club-no response. I asked the front desk to remind the manager I would like a response-nothing. I sent another message and got nothing. Good job Defined Rio for making me feel like a valued member.

You can pay on time for 2 years straight, miss one payment and they will you charge a 30 dollars for a late fee... worst part of it all, I lost my card and forgot it was attached to the define account and they only reached out after they charged me a cancelation fee..
Called the manager and he didn't waive the fee... just said next time this happens he could waive it... makes no sense... o well I've heard define doesn't care about its customers... now I know for sure..

Their shower leak non stop, wasting water all day, they aren’t being cleaned nor checked regularly . No TP in toilet at times, sauna has a light bulb that’s flickering - the music is blasting in the changing rooms and you can hear it blast from the sauna, which is far from relaxing. Put the volume a little lower in the changing rooms for god sake, it’s insane. Also, the benches in the changing rooms are not stable- need to be tighten up - how come there’s no manager going around every day reporting what I’m reporting?

I love this gym! The pool and the exercise machines are nice. The staff is always very friendly. I originally gave a two star review because of the cleanliness of the men's locker room, and also because repairs were not being fixed in a timely manner.

I have changed my rating to five stars. I have seen a significant improvement in the cleanliness of the locker room. The shower curtains were completely replaced. The parking lot lights are turning off during the day, and repairs are being fixed quickly. I am very happy that the staff is working hard to make improvements every day. Keep up the good work!

I really loved this location because it was more relaxed and quieter than other locations however, for the past few months the pool and hot tub are absolutely disgusting, from the dirt and things floating around in the pool to the horrible smell that is in the pool and cement it is terrible, I kept coming back hoping it would be cleaned and corrected, unfortunately it has not. There is a shower that has been broken for months, the showers are always dirty. I really tried hard to look past it because I love having the pool after a workout but I cannot stand the smell it is over the top, may have to just drive further to the other location or just cancel our memberships all together

I signed my two grandsons up for memberships. The boys eventually stopped going. On 11/29/22 I went to the site and canceled both memberships. I was told that I had already been charged for Dec. because, they collect for memberships on the 25th of the month. But I was charged for one of the memberships again on Jan./23. I talked to my third General Manager, John Seigler (not sure of spelling). He said he understood, and he would refund, and he did. Then I was charged again in Feb. In early March I spoke to the same G.M. and was told he would have them send a check by mail. In early April he told me the check was in the mail. Now on April 20th I called my favorite G.M. and was told the check had been processed in March and should arrive soon. Immediately, after this I was called by a young woman. She said that she was processing the check now, but she needed a bank statement from me. So, I called the G.M. and told him they had not processed the check in March as he had said, and now they want a bank statement. He said that he didn't know why they wanted the statement but, if I did not send it I would not receive a check. Then he scoffed that someone would go to court for $43.00. I hung up. Please know that if you sign up for membership it may be a lifetime commitment. They seem to make it as hard as possible to end membership. When I asked how two memberships were cancelled on the same day by the same person, but only one was actually ended. My answer was human error.

POOR MANAGEMENT!!! I called the club to voice my concerns and the little girl who answered the phone would not let me talk to the manager and insisted I tell her what my complaint was. Then the little girl pretended to go get the manager but I’m 99% sure it was the little girl who got back on the phone. I’ve been with defined fitness for over 17 years and I don’t think I will ever go back because this incident completely turned me off. This organization does not value there members.

I used to like this place but right now with the new management is declining. Restrooms and bathrooms are dirty and now the heat in the dry sauna can’t be control which is extremely hot, no body can stay for even 2 min. Spoke with front desk and manager said that the temperature can not be control and to minimize the time in it. The fact is the temperature control is broken and they don’t want to fixed it, they prefer to spend money an electricity then have clients happy. I wish people boycott this place and see what are they going to do. For me I prefer to drive the extra mile and be happy.

My overall experience was decent here. The staff is friendly for the most part, the gym is clean, equipment is up to par but my one and only issue is the groups of teenagers/young adults hogging the equipment/socializing. I don’t typically post reviews but this is an issues for people on a time limit. I typically only workout for about 45 minutes to an hour so I need to be in and out. Seems like these groups are more concerned about socializing rather than working out.
Last week there was a group of 5 surrounding the Hack Squat Machine. They were using it for a total of 38 minutes and only 2 of them were actually using it the rest were just talking playing swords with the bar from the squat rack.
2 days ago waited 27 minutes to use lateral raise machine because a group of 3 were using it as a chair to watch their friend do cable flies. I can go on and on.

This club has no ability to help their customers. Only “Omar” can fix a membership. I tried to switch over from regular membership to Presbyterian. Nope. And. I’ve tried for 3 months. They have charged me 2x the rate … both memberships. And. I was so frustrated I got mad at the front desk and Omar refused to let me into the club ever again. These pirates play games. Do not get a membership with them. I’ve been a member for years. Now that they have expanded they charge extra fees. Their contacts are impossible to switch. They play games. and they steal your money. and they have a stepford stare. When they irritate you beyond belief…. They ENJOY it. And. The executive team will call and say they will call you back. Never called back. This gym is no good. None. It is so frustrating and they do not care. You won’t get to exercise. You will just pay and pay and pay. Trust me. I’ve tried. There is nothing positive out of a Defined membership anymore.

Sorry to do this to you Omar (greet manager) but I have to warn people about how defined operates. Find another Gym to use. Defined signed my 17 year old son up to a membership. I found out months later. I went down and signed the form for him. They won't help with canceling his membership. Also they charged him about $320 before he was even able to use the gym. They should have better systems in place to keep a kid from signing up and billing him before a parent signs the paperwork that is needed. Stay away from defined fitness. I have already requested a call from someone but no one has reached out. If you would like to get in contact with me ask Omar for my number.

Ii was contemplating joining Defined Fitness so my first inclination was to check the reviews. The reviews dating back to a year ago were mostly great--sounds like the Rio Club was awesome at the onset. However, the more recent ones, up to 10 months ago, are mostly dismal (ouch!). Sounds like there are BIG problems with properly and consistently maintaining equipment, the sauna and showers; too many breakdowns and slow fixes.

Sounds like there were changes in management (bad ones) or a change in management's commitment to quality. For heavens sake, the responses to the complaints are all the same lackluster response. "We are sorry to hear of your recent experience. We are serious about fitness and strive to create the best possible workout environment for our members". THE WORST.
