Rock climbing gym GymAbout the Club
We are more than just a rock gym. We are an educational center committed to the quality of our teaching. When new climbers and cavers come to our facility they will be taken through a series of lessons designed to help them quickly move past the hurdles most newcomers experience to become a proficient and experienced climber.
We will tailor every lesson to the individual or group's experience level, goals, capabilities, or unique needs. No matter their age, skill level or prior experience, new climbers will be helped by our commited staff of educators to join the climbing community and start having fun and adventures. Whether they are here for a birthday party or to acquire a new passion, we are here to help. Locally owned since 1994.

I started climbing here at the beginning of this year (2025). The routes are really thought out and find a way to balance the fun and challenge. All of the staff I have met are incredibly knowledgeable and have extensive experience.
They also offer private lessons and I started doing those around the same time I started altogether. Throughout this year I have gone at least once a week meeting with Ellie learning the basics and different techniques along the way. I could not give enough praise for what she has taught me.
I have gone from a complete beginner to climbing my first V4 recently at another gym without her guidance.
They also offer guided outdoor climbing excursions led by Matt when weather permits. He walked me through all the safeties and how it works when brought to Little Falls to do my first outdoor climbs. An incredible experience was had.
Itβs clear the staff here know what they are doing and how to teach it clearly. If youβre thinking of starting, this is a great place to go!

Best private lesson ever with Ellie Koptsev! As a middle aged know-nothing, she made me feel comfortable and confident in just an hour. I now feel like I could go climb whenever I want to, or go with some more experienced climbers and not hold them back. Thanks again Ellie!

Best bouldering in Albany area, true climbers gym. Matt was super friendly and helpful! Setting style is more technical and thoughtful than the bit chain gyms and the lead options are awesome.

This place is amazing. The customer service is top tier. It's actually pretty cheap!
The tunnels are one of a kind, and fun for all ages. It's basically a labyrinth of tunnels intersecting and going up and down. They are pitch black and you feel your way around. They are so much fun!!!
Definitely recommend coming here!!! ππ

Interesting climbing gym, but this review is about their guided trips and crag etiquette. I enjoy climbing at Moss Island, Little Falls, and I am disappointed to say that AIR is known for setting up ~10 climbs and leaving them up for the whole day, but only having people climb on about 3 ropes at a time, leaving many ropes unused and unattended. This vastly reduces the number of bolts available for other people visiting the crag to use. For a popular crag with an already-limited number of anchor bolts, this feels like very bad etiquette for an established guide service in the region.

This is by far the coolest climbing gym Iβve ever been to. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, the features on the walls and ceiling are unique, and the cave system is unlike anything Iβve seen before. Itβs the perfect mix of challenge and fun. I live two hours away, but will definitely be returning whenever I get the chance!

The staff were absolutely amazing, they gave lots of tips and advice. The cave crawls were super fun and I highly recommend adults give them a try, although they can be a little claustrophobic so keep that in mind. They also have a bunch of awesome crack climbs and top rope ceiling climbs. All in all, it was a great experience.

Good time, great lesson! AIR is approachable and non-intimidating, all while offering highly skilled instruction for climbers of all levels. Matt was knowledgeable and funny as well as super generous with his time. Whether you're a serious climber or a newbie, there is something for you to learn, explore, or challenge yourself with at AIR. Whatever your climbing goals are, I highly recommend starting with a private lesson as a fun and safe way to familiarize yourself with AIR and all its offerings.

My granddaughters had a lot of fun. Mostly they were intrigued with the caves. They spent most of our 4 hours going through them and the zip lines. I was particularly impressed with the staff who allowed they to 'figure it out for themselves' and later when I asked staff to help they willingly went in to assist (which the girls did need by that time).

5 stars mainly because the worker was exceptional. He took time to teach everyone and make sure they understood what to do, and he even came around and gave tips on routes and how to climb, which was helpful as we were beginners. Unfortunately I didnβt catch his name but he was excellent.

In summary, AIR is a bomber chill place to go climb. You have to realize that this was one of the first indoor climbing gyms in the US, so it doesn't have the glitz and glamor of modern gyms, but if you're looking for a friendly place with a great selection of routes and AMAZING instruction staff, this is the place to go. Matt is a glorious person and has all the knowledge and experience, plus a great disposition for teaching, that you could ever want in an instructor. I learned to climb here and I keep coming back!

Extremely poor and rude customer service. Majority of employees just sitting around looking at their cell phones the entire time we were there. Girl who checked us in was rude and acted as if we were a bother to her while going over safety instructions. She kept rolling her eyes and huffing and puffing. Nothing positive about customer service whatsoever and bare minimum engagement with customers. We did not even stay for entire 90 minutes we paid for. We will certainly not be returning.

This place is a gem and reminds me so much of the gym I visit regularly at home. Despite being older and not as flashy as the new gyms, they have many good features that everyone would enjoy, even for people who are looking to train. My one critique is that the routes/boulder problems can be hard to follow as the colours/tags aren't always consistent. The setting in general also seems a bit reachy to me. Otherwise, great gym with incredible value.

The place looked so interesting from the images and I was so excited to go. When we got there it was only belaying which is why it was βfreeβ and part of the experience. I wouldnβt suggest this for a beginner to rock climb. This place didnβt seem very clean as well. The workers used their bare feet everywhere. They also had a tunnel system that you HAD to be barefoot in, no shoes were allowed. But wouldnβt the climbing shoes be perfectly fine for that?? Also from the gym smelling like feet and extreme body odor it made the experience even worse. There were some of the workers putting their bare foot on the rock walls right in front of us, exactly where we would put our hands. It just made me feel so uncomfortable to climb and even just be there. If it didnβt smell and everyone kept at least their socks on I would feel a little more comfortable. I would not suggest this place to anyone.

I went with my 8 year old daughter, this was our first rock climbing experience and the staff member was thorough in explaining what to do. She didn't care for climbing but the cave made up for it. She didn't want to leave, even if your child isn't in to climbing, bring them in for the cave, they'll love exploring all the paths.

We recently visited this indoor rock gym for the first time and had a great time, despite a somewhat rocky start. When we first arrived, the staff member who greeted us wasn't particularly welcoming and didn't explain the process, which made things a bit awkward.
However, once we got into the orientation, things improved significantly. The staff member went over the equipment, and rules, and gave us some practice tips, which made us feel much more comfortable and confident.
The climbing experience itself was fantastic, and we had a lot of fun. The facilities could be better maintained. The smell of feet is strong. There are plenty of climbing options for different skill levels.
Overall, despite the initial hiccup, we ended up having a wonderful time and would definitely come back. A little more warmth and clearer instructions at the beginning would make the experience perfect.

We have been to a few rockgyms but this is one of the most unique! We brought the kids to see if they might like climbing. They were a little nervous at first, but after the FREE LESSON (every other gym I have been to would charge you) they were made quite comfortable by the excellent instruction given. Even after it check out I think every single person who works there came by and taught us something new or helped us improve. They were all so patient and friendly.
And not to spoil anything but the tunnels they have inside their hollow walls were an absolute adventure! Bring your family there, bring your friends there, you will be the hero of the day!

I purchased a walk in ticket for my 15 yr old daughter. No one greeted us when we walked in. Was told she couldn't climb high or use a harness without someone to ground her weight. There was no mention of this on the website. Nothing said she had to be in a group, or have a dedicated employee to spot her. She couldn't climb anymore than above her head. Disappointing.
Thank you for your response. Perhaps explaining all of that on the website would be helpful. No one at the gym offered help or a lesson. We won't be back.

Had a great time with my 11yo, staff was very kind and helpful teaching me to belay. We had a great time just bouldering together and her doing rope climbs.Staff also helped get us started with the caves, which may have been easier to navigate with less kids (gym was pretty busy by 2pm). We did not notice any odor indicated in other reviews, but I suspect at the end of a crowded day, the caves may smell like a normal gym.

Place was great. Not nearly as crowded as I expected for a Saturday. Josh, gave my daughter and I our beginner lesson. He was great. All the staff were great. Climbing was fun but I didnβt get much of that in. I spent hours in the tunnels. Totally worth it. I wasnβt comfortable having my 10 year old daughter hold my 200 lbs, so if climbings your thing, bring a bigger buddy. Tunnels are awesome, scary, fun, stressful, great, draining, did I say scary and awesome. Great time for a 46 year old male and a 10 year old gal. Weβll be back for sure.

Absolutely fantastic. Every rope has a belay device attached to it, and they teach everyone how to belay, so this gym allows you to climb any of their ropes (this is not the case for all rock climbing gyms!). Also the 1/3 mile of caves they have is truly unique. We're talking small all-black tunnels that lead to hidden rooms, slides, and even a zipline. You need to confirm you can fit through a small hole before you're allowed in the caves. You're not allowed to bring in flashlights, but the workaround is to bring in glowsticks! Makes a world of difference to be able to see even that much and then there's no risk of them breaking and leaving glass to be picked up. Definitely recommend this place!

It is 1 adult per child, so you'll get turned away if it's just you with 2 kids. You really learn a lot about your body because you are lifting your full body weight. It's around $20 a person for an adult. Budget up to 100 dollars for a family of 4. I don't know if there is a time limit, but you can be there for a while. There are about 4 walls to climb, one is the least complex. The fourth is the most complex. It's not bad. But if you have 2 kids, bring 2 adults.

the caves. The caves. I went into the caves and I saw nothing. If you want the experience of being in a maze blind it's awesome because I wanna be in a maze blind except it's not really a maze because there's multiple exits and if you just keep going you'll end up at one and I'm also not blind but it's pretty good when I was in there I said "man I wish I couldn't see anything" but really I do wish I could see anything including the sun without going blind cuz then I couldn't see the sun it's like a whole cycle. Wackiest fun. Tbe climbing was tricky but fun I am a beginner it was fun and I climbed but not all the way up because my fingers got tired and I couldn't find a good place to grab onto .Luckily the cave you don't have to worry about rocks to climb. If you like caves and climbing or Minecraft you will enjoy, except Minecraft caves are much bigger and blocky and not real so you might get a bruise if it was just like Minecraft luckily it was not just like miceraft. Have a fun at Albany s indoor rock gym in albany , Albany , new York, US.

They have a indoor caving exhibition that my 11year old son and his friend were so happy to explore on their own. The staff there were super friendly and just wanted to get everyone the memory they came for! I will be taking the girls coming up next week because how much fun the boys really had!

This place is a blast! The staff is super informative and they made us feel comfortable as new climbers. Climbing was fun and challenging. The equipment we rented was in great shape and made us feel safe. the cave exploring was a bit much if youβre at all claustrophobic but the kids seemed to love it, great activity for the average adventurer

Great experience. Will go back again soon. First impression coming from central rock gym was that bit was crowded and disorganized and smelled pretty intensively of sweat lol. But it was a weekend where multiple parties were being held, so taking advantage of down time between parties was necessary. Instructors and local serious climbers were wonderful. They don't charge for belaying certifications, they just genuinely want people to learn to climb and have fun safely. Definitely will go back for lessons and/or outdoor excursion.
Would recommend going on a weekday if you'd like more wall space to yourself. Cubbies for your stuff. Tables to chill at when you need a break.

omg!! iβm a full, grown woman n i had SO MUCH fun bumping around inside the caves. there are also a few lengthy traverses here which challenged me in the best of ways.
p.s. i had one qualmβif itβs your first time n you plan on doing top rope, youβll have to show a kid that you know how to use the grigri. just hope you n your climbing partner are on PERFECT form that day, otherwise heβll make you feel like a dummy.

My brother was up visiting from LI and wanted to take his nephews (4, 8 &10) to do something fun! We had a blast! The staff was friendly and gave great instruction. There was something for everyone! There was even a belayed climbing route my 4 y/o could scramble to the top with ease. And when he decided he had enough of the harness and wasn't a huge fan of the caves ( which he WAS eventually convinced to take a quick crawl through anyway ...big brothers) he had a blast bouldering in multiple different sections.
The bigger two loved it all. They made it to the top of multiple climbs and struggled on others, which was a perfect mix. They couldn't get enough of the caves and I'm pretty sure made it through ALL of the paths, laughing at their uncle struggling to keep up along the way. He of course wasn't about to let them show him up, so completed one of the climbs they had struggled with and showed off on some bouldering (while he did a great job, his collegiate athlete days are over and I hope he remembered to take some motrin when he got home...he's gonna be hurting in the morning!)
The place really caters to all ages and skill levels. There was a grandmother there with her tween granddaughter that they taught to belay in no time at all and a family that came in who was clearly experienced that they were showing different bouldering techniques and routes too.
This is a great place to take the kids to burn off some energy (just keep in mind under 10 needs to be 1:1 with an adult...while I totally understand it for the climbing portion, I think 8 would probably be ok on their own in the caves, as long as the parent knows their kids and they're not scared of the dark...because parts are DARK....but Ia sure they have their reasons). It is also great for a date night, a night or afternoon out with friends, a place to try something new, a team building experience for coworkers, and 2 of my kids have asked about having their birthday party there!
Lastly the price is so reasonable! $20 for gear rental and admission and you can climb all day...leaving for lunch or dinner and coming back if you haven't had enough yet. I'm pretty sure $20 barely gets you an hour at the trampoline park (& from an emergency medicine provider's perspective....I've seen a lot less indoor rock climbing injuries (as in zero) than trampoline injuries....dozens) π
I totally recommend giving this place a shot! I'd be willing to bet that for most people, if you go once, you'll go more than once! π§πΌ

What a great place lots of fun. Lots of things to climb. The greatest part is the hidden tunnels in the walls. I spent hours with my kids playing in the tunnels. I DO NOT RECOMMENDED the tunnels if you are claustrophobic, fear of tight cramped spaces. If you go in the tunnels it's completely black inside, small tight places and lots of climbing, crawling, twists turns, places where you will be on your back, stomach, hands and knees, standing. It helps to be very flexible. If you don't want to hit the caves then you can climb walls, ceiling, rock crevices, ropes. Anybody can do it it's so easy to do. It's $20 a person to go.

Nate was awesome. He spent time teaching our group to ensure their safety. He was super helpful and great with the kids. All the staff here are down to earth. Itβs a great place to get out and have in while exercising. The caves are fun and intense. You will not be disappointed if you come here.

Nice staff. Will rent you anything you need (can add up). Many options for all levels at least from beginner and on up. My 4y could even have several options to climb! The kids LOVE the tunnels, really sets this place apart! They can playing there for hours!

Such great staff. They're good with kids, patient and supportive, but serious about safety. They showed everyone how to belay, tested and taught to confirm everyone learned, and walked around with pointers.
To go into the caves you have to fit through a triangle shaped box. At 40yo, 235lb, and 6"2" I thought no way I'd fit. They encouraged me to try if I wanted, suggested a position, and I sailed right through, and enjoyed crawling around with my kids.
I didn't get to climb, but the kids had a blast. We'll be back again.

My problem was resolved and was due to a technical issue. I must take back my first impressions and say that the customer services are indeed professional and prompt in getting back to you if there are any issues. I do thank them as everything was resolved and I really don't like to give negative reviews.

Under normal circumstances, I would have given the rockgym a 3* review. Adequate. The staff at the gym were knowledgeable and gave good guidance/advice. Once on the walls you can do some cool stuff like bouldering, caving and traditional climbing. The area is spacious but not too large and some parts the holds are loose and undependable.
The big reason for the two star deduction is that my buddy and I were scheduled in and he had to cancel before because he got slightly ill and didn't want to risk anyone there nor I, so I was looking to get a credit or refund. I was directed to contact via email/website to get that situation fixed. No response. No acknowledgement. Nothing. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited a few days, and was truly disappointed in that kind of "professionalism" this business showed. I can't really recommend the place after that, so go at your own peril.

Brought my 5yo to Albany Indoor Rock Gym and it was an excellent experience! The team was knowledgeable and explained processes very patiently to my 5yo. The caves are for the brave. Made it through the caves about ten feet and then used bribes of the fruit popsicles they sell to get out.

I started coming here when I was a kid in the 90s, now I get to bring my now 11 year old. They are always making little adjustments and improvements. Already you can always ask a staff member for assistance or hints to get to a particular spot in the caves.

This was my third or fourth time in a climbing gym. The last time was over a year ago, so I definitely needed a refresher on how to use the belay system. Matt did an excellent job instructing us on it. Not only that but he gave us simplistic and common sense ways to approach climbing and use climbing techniques. If you are new to climbing, you can't go wrong with this gym. The atmosphere is just so welcoming. And even if you're a veteran of climbing, this gym has so much to offer for such a reasonable price.

The prices are great all of the employees are super helpful they thought me how to rock climb witch was amazing. Me and my family had such a great time we'll will definitely be coming back. The rock climbing was great but the cave was so much better it took me a little while to find the hidden zip line but there is no water fountain but that`s ok the place is amazing i would definitely recommend coming here even if u dont know how to rock climb the employees will teach u how to do it. I really loved this experience.

I took my kids there a few days ago (4 kids ranging from ages 7-14 and being the only parent there) , first rock climbing experience. We got there not really knowing what to do, or what to expect. But someone named Christian was there and he was awesome! He walked us through everything step by step, with an extreme amount of patience, friendly helpful attitude, and a good sense of humor. He even came over and started to encourage my youngest daughter who was scared to climb higher. We will absolutely be back to this place! Between the caves (which my kids are determined to find the hidden zip line next time) or just simply the climbs, it was an amazing time and very well priced! Thanks Christian!

Me and my friends went to go rock climbing for the first time in years and it was awesome! Matt was extremely helpful and patient. He told us everything we needed to know to have a fun, safe experience.
The caves were also incredible! Matt worked with everyone and supported them on individual levels.
I am definitely looking forward to going back to this gem!

Wow! Iβm in my twenties and I went with 3 other friends. No one else was there in the beginning and the instructor, Matt, taught us everything we needed to know (and more!) and was so kind and patient. He has so much experience and the place is really magical. The indoor caves was the absolute scariest experience of my life, but I trusted the establishment so much and decided to go for it. I will never forget this place and the hard work these people put into it. Thanks for a great night and I will be coming back!
