People at the front desk are nice and helpful, the facilities are decently clean. The climbing though… well I won’t be going back.
The walls felt very underutilized. Lots of space between boulders. The setting felt like it was done by a bunch of comp kids who like jumping and hate creative beta. Overall quite boring and quite frankly not friendly to beginners.
The pads were also too soft. There were times where it felt like my foot touched the concrete below the pads when I dropped from the top of boulders. Did not feel safe (it might in fact be safe, I’m not an expert in the physics, but the feeling made me not want to do risky moves).

The people here are great. The vibe is good. New set ups change regularly. The space is so well kept up and little details like they have mouthwash, qtips, nail files, grip tape, band aids, shoe cleaner and a great gym as well . My son Caleb just made their junior competitive team here and everyone is so supportive of each other.

Decent gym, I would give a higher rating if not for safety concern. The pads are not thick enough for how squishy they are. You can feel the floor underneath after big falls, which I’ve never encountered anywhere before. Someone is gonna break an ankle or get concussed. Overall, setting is not that interesting. Pro tip, don’t go between 3-5 on a weekday because gym is mobbed by children.

They offer First Time Free on their website and ask for your email and phone number to sign up for that. But you will NEVER be able to use the offer. They will either tell you that you are not a First Time or just don’t send you the promo code. That’s what happened to me and my friends. PLEASE stop putting fake offer on your website and ask for people’s personal info!!

Positives - Staff was super nice and the setting felt at least a bit different from what the rest of the gyms in the city offer. Kilter board & tension board, campus board, weights and fitness options. Seems like they offer a lot of community activities and events which is nice!
Grading system - it's colored holds, so holds of purple = V4ish etc.
Negatives - I went during a day, during the summer which was a COMPLETE waste of money. There are kids in a camp screaming and running everywhere, it felt very unsafe for me to climb and I couldn't actually focus on what I was climbing because I was afraid a kid was going to run underneath me at any moment. The gym was just dominated by kids. There are councilors who will tell the kids to back up once in a while, but there were still what felt like plenty of kids not accompanied by an adult?
This is probably a great place to send your kid over the summer but if you're an adult just looking for a relaxing place to climb... I would kindly say stay away!
Haven't been during more normal hours... probably its better, but even the way the gym is positioned where there's two walls facing each other - I feel they're a bit too close together and knowing how crowded the NY gyms get, this could be a bit weird to manage.. but haven't personally been just giving a warning if anyone's overly cautious about that. There was a dyno set in the narrow section near the front though which I would be hesitant to try on an evening. They're definitely making the most of the space they have, but might just require some patience on a busy evening!

I go to the yoga studio attached to the climbing gym two to three times a week and can't say enough positive things about it! I can't speak too much on the climbing aspect of bouldering project but if you're interested in yoga and want to enjoy classes that feel welcoming and engaging, I definitely recommend!

Me and a few climbers from a different gym decided to give this one a try as the place is just opened.
Nice layouts little bit of everything but there definitely is room for improvement. One of the two water fountains is broken. The place could use more cobbies and lockers. And maybe more brushes around to clean holds.
update :
so I tried this gym again after a year and it has definitely improved. the grading is much more reasonable and everything seems more in order.
as a plus, decent number of slabs
But overall a great new gym.

Something that didnt sit right with me, new to rockclimbing and was checking out this gym with some friends, my white friend was offered the free day pass without even asking (she came in 30 mins before me) and when i went to go sign up and asked if there was any kind of day pass i was charged $30. After paying I go in and put my stuff down, I was putting down my belongings and one of the workers saw my lighter and threatened to burn my phone if I didnt put it away. Literally I am not even making this up, this genuinely happened on my first visit and I never write bad reviews like this. It just didnt sit right with me, just wanted to detail my experience here. If you want a bigger, better and more cohesive rockclimbing gym just go to movement, i signed up there and their environment is so much more welcoming

We loved this place.
All the instructors and stuff are incredible and friendly. Our 6-year-old daughter took two seasons of rock climbing classes, and her skill, strength, strategy, and persistence strengthened as she progressed through these classes.
100% recommended! The classes last long enough for the little ones to develop the techniques they've learned. The most important thing is that our daughter is always happy to attend classes!

I've been coming to BP since January, and what started as a way to get back into my yoga practice has turned into a daily ritual that I genuinely look forward to. It had been a long time since I practiced consistently, but the incredible and inspiring instructors here made it easy to stick with it. Their guidance, encouragement, and thoughtful approaches have helped me grow stronger, both physically and mentally.
What surprised me most was the sense of community. BP has such a warm (yes- the classes are too), welcoming vibe, and it's been amazing to feel a part of something bigger. I’ve felt supported every step of the way, and I truly believe I’m becoming the strongest version of myself because of it.
If you’re thinking about joining or getting back into yoga, I can’t recommend the programming here enough. The classes are well-rounded, the energy is always positive, and the community is real. Huge shout out to Andrew, Gioia, Britt, the staff at BP, and all of my new friends who have made this experience so special.

If you want to practice Yoga in a calm, beautiful space, look no further—a solid team of new and experienced teachers offers various class styles, movement exploration, and restorative workshops.
Add to your top NYC Yoga destinations list, then stay for the climbing and community events. High-quality yoga mats, props, and bolsters provided for all classes; the studio, gym, bathrooms, and locker rooms are clean and bright.
Excellent mix of music to bring your flow through various levels of intensity, meeting you where you are in your practice. Hot Yoga is hot and humid (temps vary from 96-101), so bring a yoga mat towel or rent/buy one at the welcome desk—nice selection of beverages and snacks for sale and electrolyte packs for quick rehydrating.
BP staff is professional, thoughtful, and approachable. 110% worth the membership fee.
Five stars for a relaxed, friendly vibe for beginners and those practicing for years—the focus is on practice, not perfection.
Bonus: Free classes for all levels on a nearby rooftop during the summer - good for low-key date nights, friend or solo nights out.

I came for the climbing, stayed for the yoga! I love the yoga classes, instructors and community. It’s truly a warming “third space” here that meets you at your level and helps you grow in your practice. Love the diversity of people as well who I look forward to seeing in the studio. The special events are super fun too! BP Gowanus has become an anchor for me in recent months and excited to continue.

Come here!! I can’t speak highly enough about this place. Particularly if you are yoga-inclined, look no further, this is your best option! As a grad student in the area I’ve shopped around for affordable yoga and this is the sweet spot of studio quality at a gym price. And the teachers are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive: whether you’re maintaining your practice or starting anew, you will feel comfortable here. They offer 7 classes a day (more limited on weekends) that are a mix of hot, power, and restorative flows. And bonus! A full gym and climbing access as well.

This is a climbing gym but...if you practice yoga this is the best deal in NYC. The studio is well kept and clean. The teachers are a all top notch. And it is affordable, unlimited classes for $125 a month without any drop off in quality from other studios I have practiced at. Friendly staff, great teachers. And they have a cold plunge, full gym and other classes in addition to the climbing gym. I go for the yoga but tons of other great stuff. Shout out to Andrew, Gioia, Maddie, Erin and Britt. All wonderful teachers with different styles.

BP offers a great variety for climbing, fitness, and yoga. I come here for climbing and for yoga mostly, but also venturing into the fitness classes more recently. I really like welcoming community feel from the people that work here and gym members alike. I like that bouldering problems are set as “circuits” so that each colour is a range of difficulty. I find that this makes me more adventurous and willing to try problems that may be out of my usual comfort zone.

Best gym ever! Great and well kept facilities offering stellar climbing, yoga and fitness classes -- there is something for everyone here! I have struggled with consistency in terms of fitness for most of my life, but when I started coming to yoga classes late June/early July last year, I never stopped coming! I believe that is a testament to the absolutely incredible instructors and supportive community fostered here. I have not only deepened my yoga practice since coming here, but developed the confidence to try and enjoy new things like HIIT 45 and lifting.
Also shout out to Sam and everyone at the front desk for always being so welcoming and kind!

The Bouldering Project offers an impressive range of activities for all ages, including bouldering, yoga, High-Intensity Training (HIT), weight training, cold plunge, and co-working space. I initially joined for the yoga classes and it’s great that the membership comes with additional offerings. Occasionally, they host special events like Sound Baths and Family Days.
As a member, we get two guest passes each month, allowing friends to join in on the fun. The front desk staff are friendly and the amazing yoga instructors work hard to foster a sense of community.
The gym also organizes various climbing groups, including those for short girls, the LGBTQ+ community, and Black climbers. Additionally, there are social events like the Run Club and rooftop yoga sessions during the summer.

Bouldering Project is awesome. I come here regularly for Bouldering, Yoga, and Weight training. They rotate out routes regularly to keep things fresh. Their kids programing seems robust. The yoga program is great and they offer classes all throughout the day at a dedicated yoga room. Hot yoga is not as hot as some but hits somewhere between 95°-105° most days.

Second time I tried to come here to climb with my toddler and was turned away by staff. First time was because there’s was a camp program that was using the kids room and they said it wasn’t available but clearly when I showed up the kids were on a lunch break and no one was in the room I was told I couldn’t use it because they would be coming back and I can’t use it while they are in there. Today I showed up and was told that they are using the kids room for a team meeting because there’s a TV in there and that I won’t be available until 6pm. Which is in four hours. So paid for a membership so the employees could use the space instead. It’s a joke and wouldn’t recommend for families. Seems like it’s geared towards non family members.

Boston Bouldering Project Member who was visiting Brooklyn this past weekend to check out what another location was like.
First impression was a little bummed to find out that most of the photos on the page are out of date, as the facility has been updated, and it changed over to JUST bouldering, no long offering top rope or auto belay climbs. I'm happy to boulder regardless. Just want to climb.
Personally, I found a lot of routes in this gym at my skill level a bit boring and 1 dimensional. There was one or two routes I thought were pretty fun to do, but overall, I ripped through more half of the climbs at my level I did in mostly flashes. Maybe just caught it in an easier set.
Community and people I ran into there were very nice, staff was friendly, new changes to the space were very modern and clean. Gym area was super fresh.
Overall, I'd say it's just ok. If you want a quick climb and workout, this will get you the fix, but I'm glad my membership isn't at this location, because I would be underwhelmed.

Really friendly staff and decent enough facilities but unfortunately as other reviewers have mentioned it's absolutely overrun with kids which makes it difficult to actually climb.
I've been 4-5 times now at various days/times and without fail there are always a ton of kids running around with limited to no supervision.
Ended my last session there early after watching a child nearly get kicked in the head as they ran through the cave area with no parents in sight.
For the cost you're better off at vital or movement if you're looking to actually climb.

Easy check-in. Yoga class started on time. Clean space. Friendly and qualified yoga instructor!
The front-desk staff are attentive and stood as my heroes when I was approached by a stranger outside. I walked back in and the men just calmly made a wall for me to hide behind, before shooing the stranger away. The lady with glasses gave me an ice pack.
They went above and beyond to provide great customer service! Thank you!

Good community and fun climbs. But management really soured my time at the gym. I was a founding member but had to freeze my membership recently. They charged the freeze rates for the first 2 months but then charged full membership on the third without notice and without invoice. The only reason I found out was a credit card notification. They eventually credited it back after I complained but when I asked the manager she said they refunded it 'as a courtesy' as if it was my fault.
At best, they made a mistake and management has no idea what it's doing. At worst, they are stealing from their members and hiding behind opaque invoicing practices. From talking to others with similar issues about accounting and reading other posted reviews, it appears like the problem is systemic and intentional (or they would have fixed it by now). It's disappointing that a climbing gym which professes to be about community resorts to the predatory practices of credit card companies to extract as much money as possible from its members.

I've been climbing at various gyms around NYC for a few years.
When Bouldering Project first re-opened I was hesitant at first, because the space was smaller than Cliffs and Vital, and I wasn't sure if the vibes would be as good.
Turns out, the vibes are incredible. BBP has by far the most inviting, friendly community and staff of all the gyms I visit. They also reset extremely often, including a weekly reset on the front wall which makes you really want to finish that project. All the best climbers I know have made the switch here because the setting is challenging at the highest levels, while staying interesting, fun, and approachable at the lower levels.
Definitely my new home gym <3

Bouldering Project Brooklyn lacks transparency in their membership management process and policies.
In January this year, I made a request to cancel my membership. I made the request through the contact form on the website, since the membership cancellation and freeze form was not set up then.
The staff responded by freezing my membership instead, without providing a clear membership freeze policy. I had to make a second request to ensure the membership is canceled, not frozen.
The lack of transparency in membership policy stuck me as intentional from the staff's responses. Had I not contested the membership freeze, I would have been charged freeze fees automatically and forced to resume a membership that I didn't want after the three month period.

Great gym for brand new folks to climbing, kids, and young families. This is not the gym for other climbers. Kids are clearly the money makers for this gym, so they have a lot of scheduled events, and kids have priority. They’re all in the fitness area, then there’s nowhere to work out. They’re focused on the cave, then there’s no way to get in there. Today all the cubbies have been designated for them. So. Many. Kids. Events, camps, adventure days. Many times there are moms and babies lounging in the fitness area making it awkward to ask them to move so I can work out. This is not a mom bash, but it’s tough to stretch or lift w babies around. Summer’s been terrible with events that shut down the gym or big sections. It’s like all of June has been a wash. It’s so close to my house and had such promise when it opened 6 months ago, but the reality has been surprisingly disappointing. I regret joining this gym and will leave when my membership ends. (PS, I think it’s a win win that I leave. I’m not the clientele, and I hope this attracts the right people and many of them and they can thrive here! New folks, super fun date night, kids, and young families! Enjoy!)

Frustrating! Was forced to make an account, fill out a waiver, and pay for a pass only to be told that there was a private event AFTER I did all of that (I do not live in the area, so it was a one time option for me). They couldn't refund me in person and refused to refund me online. Now I cannot delete my credit card information or account from the site even thought I will probably never be able to come to the location and I don't know what to do...

I was on the fence about joining as a new climber but within 4 months I have seen dramatic improvements in strength, flexibility, and general quality of life.
The best part of BBP is the vibe. It is queer, friendly, supportive, social, non competitive, and rigorous (for me anyway). A distinct (and welcomed) lack of climbing bros, great staff with solid programming and a generally very welcoming community. I’ve never been more excited to go to a gym. Going on six months now since BP remolded the OG BKB, and here are 15 insights you might not know:
1. The staff is wonderful, knowledgeable, and highly approachable. They’ll pretty much do anything to make you happy (within reason!) and they actually seem happy themselves—which is rare for a climbing gym in New York.
2. Yoga is FREE for members. I haven’t utilized this amenity a ton, but every hour or so there’s a yoga class available covering all types of climbing related goodness. It’s nice knowing that that’s always available.
3. The routesetters will not only acknowledge your presence, but also talk to you! I’ve asked Miles and his team many an annoying beta question and they’re always obliging and kind.
4. The routesetting covers every style of climbing, from more traditional outdoorsy feeling stuff, to newer, more trendy styles (for the young-uns). The grades feel accurate, and the sandbagging limited. Most projects feel attainable with even the higher grades seeming doable. There’s some real magic happening on the walls, and most sessions I leave with an appreciation for what the setters are attempting. The lower grades offer nice introductions to more advanced techniques for beginners, and it’s easy to find a progression of warm-up climbs. The setting has a subtle way of pulling you into climbing problems that you might not usually prefer to climb, but you try anyway because it looks sendable.
5. Kiddos. This is a gym that embraces families. I’ve got one. My daughter is loved, and encouraged, and I feel very comfortable having her at this gym.
6. The climbing team coaches are the best. WAY above and beyond.
7. There’s a slab wall that gets reset EVERY Monday.
8. There’s spray wall, a kilter, and a tension board.
9. There’s an on-site very knowledgeable PT named Carter (I can’t remember his exact hours) who has given me some rehab advice on my bicep tendonitis – it’s much better now.
10. The music is not LAME. Yesterday they played a ton of Frank Ocean and the like. A few days earlier it was Bill Callahan.
11. It’s super CLEAN. No more dirty feet. Not that I should be walking around the gym barefoot… but if you remember the old BKB? Yeah, it’s not that.
12. The community is very, very kind. I don’t want to slam other gym communities, but sometimes the vibes can be borderline toxic. Or just collectively depressed. Years ago there was a much needed diversity push at BKB, and though we’re not there yet, certainly not as an industry, BP Gowanus is the most accessible, accepting, generous, and diverse gym I’ve ever climbed at. EVERYONE at this gym is very welcoming, and there’s a good chance you will find your people here. Absolute crushers climbing alongside brand-spanking-new beginners, and everyone is psyched to share the collective joy. The hangboard set-up practically demands you interact with other climbers, which, you know, is ultimately a good thing.
13. There’s windows! And skylights! And sunshine streaming in. You’ll know immediately if it starts raining outside.
14. Fallmats. Or Safety mats. Or whatever we’re calling them – super duper soft. If you’re older, like me, crashing down repeatedly isn’t great for the joints. They’re literally twice as soft of the mats a few blocks over at Movement, where occasionally I wouldn’t risk end-limit, high up moves while bouldering because those falls could be brutal. If you’re a bit older or new to climbing and falling scares you, trust me, these mats are amazing.
15. Management is available. You can see Quinn walking around. Or in the office. Nikki is there to hear you out. If you need to say something someone is there to hear it. Somehow years later, BP feels in a good way, smaller and tighter, and happier. Definitely cleaner.

Had an incredibly enjoyable time during my most recent visit to Brooklyn Bouldering Project. I appreciated that there were tons of creatively set climbs at all grades in the gym which were tailored to most body types and skill levels. The ambiance and general vibes along with the courteous staff and community added to my overall positive perception of the gym. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone who lives in the area or who is visiting the city and looking for a new gym to visit!

BP Brooklyn is easily top 3 gym in New York. The setting is phenomenal and the staff is friendly and they’re always hosting events. I know this because whoever runs their Instagram page does a great job at letting the climbing community know! Love them!

Bouldering Project in Brooklyn is a fantastic addition to the local climbing community, as is in the name it is exclusively a Bouldering gym.
With the space they have dedicated to Bouldering & a nice, new, clean fitness center as well as the kilter board and tension board this gym is a great place to visit if you're traveling from a distance like me, but if I was local I'd absolutely sign up for a membership there.
The staff are all awesome, I had a nice conversation with Hannah about their youth programs she was great & super informative.
Looking forward to my next visit!

Really enjoyed my first visit. The space is clean and cozy — enough problems to keep me busy all night. The staff is super friendly. The music selection was great. The locker room was small but in great shape and I wasn't fighting for a locker. The thing I really loved about the space was that it felt **chill**. I didn't feel like everyone was there to show off or be seen. It didn't have the high frenetic energy of some of the other gyms in town. If I ever want to just climb in a relaxed environment where I can get my workout without feeling like I'm performing, this is the spot for it. It's lacking in some of the amenities of the bigger gyms, so if you want to have the Michelin-star climbing gym experience, this isn't the place for you.

I belonged to Brooklyn Boulders before, and I have to have this NEW Bouldering Project Gowanus is AMAZING. They killed it with the renovation. The heated yoga studio room is simple and beautiful, the workout areas have plenty of cardio equipment (Stepper, treadmills, rowers, and assault bikes) and free weights, benches, rings, hang boards, and kettebells (no machines), co-working tables in the back, and even a private cold plunge room you can use! There are plenty of bouldering walls and problems to continually push yourself and the route setters are super active in changing them out. The unlimited yoga and fitness classes boutique studio quality. The staff are all amazing between Andrew the Yoga & Fitness Manager, the yoga instructors, the front desk staff (shoutout to Connor and Ben), and Quinn the GM. And most of all, there feels like a real sense of community that you just don't get at Movement Gowanus (Cliffs) nearby.

Brooklyn Bouldering Project has been an essential recreational outlet (at least for me) since they opened this year. Not only does the gym provide a never ending rotation of captivating routes, BP provides various opportunities for fitness and fun with their yoga and fitness classes, with each instructor bringing something special to the gym. Did I mention they have a Run Club? (every Monday @ 7am) My favorite way to start the week. An awesome growing community and intimate atmosphere.

After being a member of various climbing gyms over the past 10 years, this is by far the worst experience when it comes to membership account management. I tried pausing membership, but after 1 email, others were ignored. I then tried canceling. End result - I got charged for 2 extra months while dealing with the most “robot” like customer support - at one point I just decided it was “cheaper” for me to pay the membership than to continue going back and forth with them.
Gym itself is fine, and I would keep it for occasional rotation. Routesetting is ok, layout is poor, bathroom is a joke considering it’s a new gym. Good things - kilter and tension boards, campus and several hang boards.
General manager seems nice and it’s probably not her personal fault

It has it has TB2 which gets 4 stars, but -1 stars because theres kids running around sometimes.
Other than that theres a small equipment issue. Theres 8 total 45 plates, and they are the thickest plates that exist. Its not possible to load more than 425 safely on a barbell. Arm lifting with a tension block is also pretty awkward. Two plates is taller than the loading pins so if you want to go heavier than that you have to bring a rope or link random carabiners through the plates. If your semi strong the weight stack will be so tall its going to hit your inner thighs on every rep (annoying). If two semi strong people are lifting at the same time theres not enough plates to go around. Having a handful of old steel plates would be more convenient.

I went for my first bouldering experience yesterday, and it was great! I was a little self-conscious since I've never done it before, and I am also pretty out of shape. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see people of all levels, ages, and athletic abilities. The yellow problems are the easiest for beginners, but challenging enough to make the experience interesting. I will have to go back to conquer them all! The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the environment was relaxed and non-judgmental. The place is gorgeous, and I am excited about their events and activities, especially the yoga classes. Oh, and I LOVED seeing the little spidermen climbing the walls, I was so impressed to see how good they were and how much fun they were having. I can't wait to have my toddler join soon!

As the days of community-owned gyms come to a close and the corporatizarion of our pasttime continues, Bouldering Project proudly enters Brooklyn carrying the flag of the most soulless gym in the city. This feels more like a gym for Brooklyn, Iowa than Brooklyn, New York.
Ironically occupying the space of Brooklyn Boulders--one of America's first modern climbing gyms and a troubled but meaningful part of NY's climbing culture--BP has stripped the space clean and installed sterile new walls as dull as a piece of cardboard. If interesting and novel wall shapes are your thing, look elsewhere: BP is a sea of gently undulating slab with only about 25% of the wall space dedicated to a generic overhang. There are a couple minor edges that have cool shapes and setting potential that are currently underutilized.
The website claims their setting "leverages the tools of risk, intensity, and complexity" and the setters are "trained in BP setting philosophy" but that philosophy seems to be to only set straight up and never have any overlaps because avoiding liability is the primary philosophy. The routes are graded with a set of colors (like Vital or the former Cliffs Dumbo), however the colors were chosen not to be meaningful and easy to use while climbing (like Vital) but seemingly to make a nice illustration for their logo, which means the order is completely indecipherable, and there is only a single small sign in the gym providing the very much needed legend.
To me, BP represents a philosophy of removing everything interesting, experimental, slightly dangerous from the gym and instead reframing climbing as safe family fun. If you climb for challenge or advancement or training or difficulty or anything more than casual weekend chat with friends and do the occasional climb, look elsewhere. If this were the only gym in the city I'd find a new hobby.

Echoing another reviewer I saw below, really love the route setting. At other gyms I tend to only climb at one or two levels, but here I'll try pretty much anything from the first five color levels because all the routes are interesting. The grippy volumes are really fun and unique. With the overlapping color levels you sometimes get a surprisingly hard climb at a lower level, too.
First couple weeks were too busy with everyone checking out the new gym, and the layout felt unsuitable, but when it's less crowded it works really well. Hoping it falls into a nice steady state groove to do sufficiently good business without being overcrowded.

Super fun gym, really enjoyed the setting, layout, and cleanliness. The only complaint I have isn't even something I blame the staff for because they did their part, but the safety is so questionable. I saw so many people sitting or standing in fall zones, not paying attention to their surroundings when walking on the padding, walking under climbers, and ignoring downclimb holds and just jumping from the very top of the wall (often 8+ foot falls) and improper landing technique. Again I don't blame the staff for this because I saw them give pretty much every climber and orientation as they entered. They did not give me one, but I think it's because I am an industry employee and was given the pass for that. Other than the safety issues, this gym was incredible and I definitely plan on coming back

Brooklyn Bouldering Project could not have been more welcoming to me and my family as we entered the building. The staff and climbers were so nice and seem to form an extremely warm community that I am glad to be a part of. The setting is a thing of beauty, with mentally challenging boulders, but not lacking more intuitive climbs for beginners. The youth room has given my little brother a reason to get off Fortnite and be active in the space without being a bother to the other members. My parents have thoroughly enjoyed the yoga studio, and have gained so much from the facilities, even though they are not climbers. I cannot be more thrilled with the results of the construction. It has made a truly beautiful gym. It is not only a Brooklyn, but a New York must.

Overall enjoyed the gym, plenty of boulders to try out and friendly front desk staff, tends to be crowded but that is something that doesn’t bother.
What does bother me, though, is the lack of climbing etiquette from the climbing team. A friend and I visited the gym this past week, this was not our first visit. We had decided to climb on the Kilter Board. Several minutes later, a group of eight team kids led by their coach showed up, hoarded the board, and changed our climbs, practically kicking us off without saying a word to us. The coach did not come up to us and ask us if they could use/share the board for the kids to train, to which we would’ve politely asked to share the board. We stayed a little bit longer, and my friend switched to a climb he wanted to do. The response? The team kids yelled at him for switching climbs and were making negative side comments. What did the coach do? Nothing.
I understand that kids probably don’t know any better, which is why the coach should have said something to them and to us. He allowed them to say rude comments about us, ignored us and hoped we would go away so that his kids could have the board. Does common courtesy not exist anymore?

Wow! I’m going to start off and say my preferred choice of climbing is outdoor but I work in an industry that requires me to be in a city. Being stoked on indoor gyms (especially only bouldering ones) can be challenging. My experience with Brooklyn BP was nothing short of awesome.
I don’t have many real cons to list that BBP can control, but for readability, I am going to write in pros + cons format.
Pros:
-Extremely friendly, outgoing, and competent staff (This is HUGE and often challenging to find at a big city gym).
-Bathroom amenities - not only are they gender supportive, but they have complimentary feminine products ❤️, hair ties, deodorant, blow dryers, etc (basically everything you need but often forget at home).
-Adjustable training boards(yes, more than one) including a shiny, new, grippy kilter board.
-Coworking stations/desks!
-A dedicated kids’ climbing/hangout area.
-A good variety of climbs and set for (almost) any preferred style.
Cons:
-Some reviews mention the layout being awkward + creating limit mat “hangout space”. I understand from an outside view, why someone might say this.. However, I don’t think people leaving these reviews understand how challenging climbing gym architecture is and all the thought that goes into it. The space as a whole is slightly narrow (nothing BP can do). I MUCH prefer having more climbs available rather than mat space to mingle.
- More route circuit charts need to be up.
- No clear signage stating that climbing shoes should not be worn in the bathroom.
I don’t live in NYC but going to BBP made me want to. Fun climbs, aesthetically pleasing gym, great staff and THE KILTER BOARD!
Another big shout out to Bouldering Project as a company: “Chain business” does not (always) equal evil. For those who do not know, BP offers access memberships (25% and 40% off monthly dues). Real action and real intention to create a more accessible and all inclusive community. Small things can make big impacts. If you are looking to start climbing, this is the place to do it!

Amazing route setting. Great use of unique volumes that are super grippy. Most of the routes incorporate interesting balance and body position problems.
This gym has great beginner routes. Making interesting easy routes is something I feel most gyms fail at. Brooklyn Bouldering Project is somewhere I would gladly take my friends to learn how to climb.
The gym layout and facilities have been good every time I've gone, but I'd avoid it when it's busy. There just isn't that much space between the walls.
The staff have been very friendly, especially Conor.

I was really looking forward to the (re)opening of this gym after it closed down for renovations. I was a member when the gym was still BKB and was very excited at the prospect that Bouldering Project would refresh and revitalize the gym, which previously had some great setting, interesting walls, but definitely needed some upgrades to stay on par with newer gyms like Vital and the new cliffs facility (oops movement now) that opened down the street.
My excitement has been partially met. It's great to see the space open once more and I had an decent time bouldering, but I can't help but be struck by how poorly utilized the space is, as some other reviewers have pointed out. The new layout somehow makes the space feel *smaller* to me than the original BKB layout, which is kind of crazy. Granted, some of this is due to the fact that they gave up some climbing space for a nicer gym area, youth room, yoga room, and locker rooms, all things the gym arguably needed. Still, I can't help but feel that the actual wall layout and shape selection could have been more interesting. Like others I worry that some of the walls are so close together that there won't be sufficient space to climb safely during crowded periods. Also, as another person has mentioned, very few of the routes currently overlap and they are pretty generously spaced out. I do feel the gym might be able to offer more and defuse some of that smallness feeling if they set more overlapping climbs to really utilize more wall space, but at the same time, it will be a constant balance between leveraging wall capacity and safety given how tight the spacing is between some walls.
I also would say the walls themselves are generally kind of uninspiring compared to other gyms I've been to. A novel feature (at least based on the couple of gyms I've been to) is a set of wedge shaped freestanding walls that have sharp side edges. The initial set of routes has a few climbs that require getting around these edges, which for me was novel and fun, but aside from that, the larger, primary walls felt kind of generic, at least on this initial set, and since the gym has two of these primary walls, which occupy most of the space, it left me with a kind of bland feeling overall. This problem might be mitigated with the right approach to setting. At the moment it all feels like one continuous, unchanging wall—many other gyms are able to leverage more space to create different zones, each with different wall shapes that give each zone its own flavor and keep things interesting. With large continuous walls like these, route variation/thematizing around wall sections might have to help deliver and amplify some of that character instead. This is not to say all the current routes are all the same—not at all, as far as they go, there's a good amount of variability and interesting setting—I think the psychological effect of the new layout is just such that it makes everything *feel* sort of undifferentiated when you're in the space. The MPLS BP has a similar layout, but in a much larger facility, where surplus space allows them to have a bunch of these larger continuous walls without issue. In this smaller space, I think different techniques might be needed to make a large continuous wall work well.
Overall, I'd say the revitalized space is worth checking out. You might find that the climbs are precisely suited to your preferences or style, or maybe the newer facilities are just the addition you are looking for in a gym. I have had zero problems when it comes to accounts and management so far (my old BKB account was automatically transferred without issue), so all good there. Personally, I find the walls and bouldering routes at some other places more interesting, but I am going to continue to keep an eye on this gym to see how things develop. Even though I think the layout and utilization of space in the gym could be better, with the right tweaks and route setting they might be able to balance things out and find a way to make it work well over time.

The billing and management is hugely disappointing.
Bouldering Project is a great brand and gave this location lots of resources -- I'm just not sure if they are able to run this place as well as it deserves.
This is my story.
I had put high dollar amount in my account in the fall of 2022 right before I was informed of the BKB->BP ownership transfer. I was unable to withdraw the value, however -- I was told that the gym would reopen in 3 months, better than ever. The rest is history; the gym didn't reopen till a full year after the promised timeline, in Jan 2024.
Leading up to the gym opening, amid the expectation that the gym would open in April, late summer, early fall, early winter etc, I had decided to apply my credit towards an annual membership. I made this explicit in person and in emails, that I would like to use this credit towards my membership.
Now that the gym is open, I was shocked to see a charge of full membership on my credit card while my remaining balance in my account sits there untouched. This is a significant unplanned outstanding expense in my credit card that I'd like sorted out.
If I do not pay it out, my credit will get hurt, and if I do pay it out, my other expenses will get impacted.
Here starts my long journey of trying to get my money back, like it's not Bouldering Project Gowanus' business.
I first found out that the online system has changed and after going through the ordeal of registering a new account and hopping around for information I'm looking for, I started getting logged out randomly. The system doesn't even allow my browser to save my info, so I have to manually type my login info every single time I'm trying to back to the page I was on. The layout of the website has 2 layers of head bars, with no memory of whether or not I'm logged in after I moved to a different tab. I think school students can likely build better websites.
I then resorted to email. Every email takes a few days before reply, which is so nerve racking given a big sum of expense is unresolved for me. They first tell me they "hope to" refund in February when they upgrade their system, which is in 1-2 month's time. And if I had learned anything from waiting on the gym's reopening, that might mean another year. Further if they are using the same tech team that built the new website, there's just no hope.
After another round of communication to help them understand the situation, they offered to refund my money on my account, which is the sensible thing to do. However, as I move to expect my refund, I only found out that the refund would be by mail and only expected in a few weeks. Who still transact via mail these days? What happens if the check gets lost? Am I supposed to check my mailbox every day to confirm my receiving the check? And how do I inform them that the check is lost if I fail to find it after checking every day for a few weeks?
After waiting for this gym for over a year, this is what I get? What did I do to deserve this?
I'm absolutely exhausted and I would even say traumatized at this point for the mental toll they had put me through. I wanted to share my experience with anyone who is still on the fence about joining this gym after their first month.
I trusted this facility, and now I feel like I'm being punished for it. I'm made to feel like this is all my responsibility and Bouldering Project Gowanus did not do anything wrong. I'm left hanging in my email chain and left to sort out my own finances without support.
This has been such a frustrating experience for me that I would absolutely not wish on anyone. The magnitude of absurdity of how I have been treated is unheard of in the very competitive consumer service industries esp. in NYC.
I do not recommend this gym to anyone until a better management team is in place.

Very bad layout. There is not a lot of space to stand or sit besides in front of some slab islands. If a lot of people are working on problems together, the wall behind them is unusable as it’s unsafe to climb with that many people below them. Blows my mind that they had the chance to have a good layout after a similarly sketchy area at bkb.. and they ended up making that kind of canyon-feeling throughout large swaths of the gym. The gym felt like a very large space with not that much to actually climb. Setting was pretty fun though.
There is also nowhere to store anything so everyone had to leave their bags around the perimeter of the mats. Locker room has only three small benches to use while changing and very few lockers. These did not seem safe to use either. (I think there was a problem with them when I was leaving..) People were wearing their climbing shoes in the bathroom.
Maybe with less people it will be a better climbing experience.

After passing by the gym the setup of the walls is already an issue. The stacked climbing walls mean that large sections of the wall will not be able to be used simultaneously. A large section of the gym is crammed into the front and back area. There's no place to wait for a climb on these walls and the fall zone for these areas is extremely small even for"slab climbing". This kind of design kind of blows my mind on having such closed in areas where people could fall on others trying to walk to a climb start or someone else falling off a nearby or opposing climb.
Maybe staying at Cliffs might be a better idea, wait until go, or go monthly and cancel after a short bit if the gym layout is even worse with people actively climbing. The space looks very unoptimized so far.

TLDR
Overpriced shabby gym that will scam you with fake new member deals.
Last winter (December 2022) my boyfriend and I wanted to start climbing. We went to the gym on Degraw to climb and purchased day passes, though from the start the front desk workers wanted to sell us on a membership. After our climb, they offered to roll the day pass fee into a three month membership which also included a discount. A three month membership worked great for us so after some discussion and clarification about possible pay structures we signed up for three months of membership, or so we thought.
We went for three months but after the excitement of a new activity wore off, decided we didn't like the gym. There are a lot of kids and tweens running around, which added to the crowded feeling of the already smallish space. Plus, there were often only about four auto belays at a time and two would be occupied by kids groups. I wished there were more to accommodate both the kids care and all of the adult patrons. I tried some yoga classes there but the room was very cold, only heated by a single space heater, and only separated by a curtain from the main locker area.
After the three months, we let our membership expire. It wasn't until the summer that we realized the deal we were sold on was a lie and we had been charged $100/month for memberships we didn't want and didn't know we had. Once I realized, I paused my membership to avoid another $100 initiation fee if we went back this winter. However, after two months of it being paused, the full fee resumed with no warning. The gym touts its community and goes for an indie vibe but then pulls the same scams as any corporate gym. I emailed them to try to get a refund and they said that the contract I'd signed said the membership would renew monthly, even though the person that sold me it said it would end after three months. Here I am, $600 later, writing my first negative Google review.

Just started out 3 months ago and overall I enjoy the place - the community is welcoming and the route setting is good and not too repetitive.
However generally the place isn’t in the best shape - it smells, there’s always water dripping, mats are pretty dirty, no paper towels etc. hopefully it improves.

This place has changed drastically since its humble BKB beginnings. I was a happy member until they changed their policies mid-membership and informed me that I would not be able to use The Lair (fitness area), without incurring an additional charge. There was no conversation, heads-up or negotiation possible. So I went elsewhere for a more comprehensive fitness experience.

Great place. Went on a Friday late afternoon. It wasn't much people. They have a lot of Boulder wall and wall climbing walls. They also have a good amount of walls we're you can climb solo. I would definitely go again.

these negative reviews are wack. since under new mgmt, you can tell they want to empower the local community. staff is friendly and engaging, unlike some folks nearby. bouldering routes are also far better than what you'll see nearby.

When "Brooklyn Boulders" became "Brooklyn Bouldering Project," there was no communication whatsoever (!) to members that the change had occurred. "Brooklyn Boulders," where I was paying dues, simply ceased to exist – so I (unwittingly) let my membership sit idle. When I contacted Brooklyn Bouldering Project, they simply cancelled my membership with no recompense. This gym has gone from bad to worse from a managerial perspective.

Please be aware of your membership and billing issues and keep a track of them.
I have been a member for more that 4 years and had to cancel my membership due to them billing me incorrectly twice over a year period and resulting in hundreds (close to a thousand dollars) in incorrect charges that they were unwilling to resolve.
Go to Vital climbing gym or the cliffs climbing gym which just opened near by, much better service, staff and quality of climbing.

I have been going to this gym since 2013/14 and it's been in slow decline for the past 5 years at least. I was very excited to hear that it was purchased and under new management, but unfortunately, that seems to have just accelerated the march towards irrelevance.
The thing they seem to care about least is the rock climbing itself. They have neglected their team of route setters to the point that there are barely any left and as a result, the quantity of climbs (which was never great to begin with) has fallen into the gutter and the quality (especially climbs above v5) has unfortunately diminished as well. Make no mistake - this is ALL on the management of the gym, which is completely non-existent.
If you want to become a stronger climber and climb tons of interesting bouldering problems - go to GP81. If you want to climb ropes, try out the Cliffs. But until new management gets their act together, I cannot recommend this gym for anything other than the cheerfulness of their front desk employees, who always say hello and manage to brighten my day.
If proven wrong I will happily revisit this review in a few months. But I doubt it.

I went there 2 days ago. They ask you vaccine certificat eveswitch and wear masks despite of government lifted covid restrictions. Also you need to see the safety video. The most burocratic bouldering club. Time to switch.

Long time member of BKB. It used to be the best, but unfortunately does not seem to have reinvested in its facility to keep up with competitors. Route setting and community is still quite good, but for the average climber any of the other climbing gyms in the city have far better amenities with less children for similar price. It is now under new management also, not sure if they will turn it around, but I will probably change membership soon to a competitor.

30 minutes trying to check in. Just to sign a waver....
The ipad doesn't work...
The wifi doesn't work...
The system needs to be re-booted...
Finally I asked for paper and the guy acted very nervous. As if it's normal to wait for 30 minutes to check in 2 kids, 8 and 7 years old...
The staff really doesn't care about customers. They smile, they talk, they act cool.... but after 30 minutes I decided to leave...
Save yourself time and go to the Queensbridge location. Different professionalism.

Basically a daycare center. $40 day pass. There is an area that is reserved for people 14 and up but it’s small. Not worth the $40 not a climber friendly gym. Probably won’t go back which is too bad because I’m a 12 minute walk away. Ended up getting a membership in greenpoint lol and at that gym membership plus subway there and back 3 times a week is the same price as a monthly membership to bbg..

One of the original indoor climbing gyms in NYC, BKB Gowanus has a ton of bouldering and top roping options. There are free lockers in the back restrooms and they offer climbing classes for newbies. BKB usually offers 40% off their 10-pack day passes around mid-November which can be used at any BKB facility and offers great flexibility. I had a great time bouldering here and particularly liked the facility’s cave. My only criticism would be that it was extremely crowded on a Saturday afternoon and there were a lot of kids running around, leading to a small wait to get on any particular bouldering problem. Not sure how the crowd is on weekdays though. I have a feeling that when the new the Cliffs Gowanus opens up nearby very soon there will be a mass exodus of climbers and members to the new Cliffs facility. At least that will make BKB less crowded!

Staff is great and the climbs are solid. However big issue for me is the place reeks of sweat odor. My friend thought the same. I recommend propping the front door open and if possible opening some windows. This may make the place a bit chilly but I observed people sweating anyways and they can always layer up. Better than whiffing in the musky sweat odor especially when wearing a mask. That or invest in new HVAC systems which would probably be pricey.

This location doesn't know the definition of customer service. They have an assistant manager (picture enclosed) who has a horrible attitude and is very disrespectful. He is very condescending when he talks to customers and I have seen him running up to climbers while they are being belaying and stopping the person belaying for whatever his reasons are. Does he not realize how dangerous it is for him to be interrupting a climber who is being belay by someone? In the other photo is a screen shot from Luisa, one of their sales reps who contacted me via text message (which I believe I indicated upon signing up that I didn't want to be contacted at all). I responded back to Luisa letting her know my honest opinion about her filthy, dirty and disgusting location and requested for her to forwarded this message to the general manager. Not sure if she ever did or if the general manager got this and ignored me, but I will get to the bottom of this when I finally visit later this week to speak to the general manager.

Routes are fine, way too expensive for a day pass. Also I had just bought a chalk sock and left it there and called the desk 30 mins after i left and asked if they could look for it and hold it in lost and found for me and they told me someone had probably taken it…felt lazy considering I spent 46$ with the chalk bag to spend a few hours at a pretty mediocre climbing gym.

Staff is friendly and there are many good routes. It is crowded at certain hours but that's what living in the city is like 🤷. Unfortunately, they close very early, especially on the weekends. If you work slightly later hours it can be a challenge to get a climb in after work. The resetting also seems somewhat slow. Edit: new and later hours.

Great Gym. Going through a renovation currently which limits hours, and this gym is very kid friendly, holding classes regularly that take up sections of the gym. If that bugs you, fair enough. Otherwise this place is great. I can only assume the reviews mentioning a cold staff were prior to Larry, Griffin, Mary and others joining in. I've never had a question go unanswered, and the staff seems to literally jump to help with any kind of technical puzzle or question. I've been going for a month and a half now, 3 times a week. Started off with the intro then belay classes and had a wonderful experience in both. Come early on weekdays and let's climb!

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this place, except people like to complain. Yes, on Saturday’s it’s crowded. You often have to wait to get on the wall. Yes, there are a lot of kids. They’re annoying, but this is prime Family Brooklyn. 🤷🏼♂️ Otherwise, the staff are really nice. Zoe is really cool. The climbers are friendly. There are lots of routes to choose from. It’s great to be able to boulder and auto belay. I’m going to come back on a weekday when it’s more chill. But, it’s big and there’s lots to do. It’s super fun!

The Gowanus location is run like a daycare and there's a clear effort by BKB to capitalize on local, rich parents who need to off-load their high-energy kids for a few hours. More power to them, but if you're an adult then I recommend climbing somewhere else. Kids are the demographic majority of the gym, they're constantly running under climbers, and supervisors who seem like they're kids themselves are unable to control them. The grungy, laissez-faire attitude isn't "Brooklyn cool", it's just a poorly-run facility with staff who have given up on keeping any sense of order. The walls are changed infrequently, the holds are never clean, and any sense of community BKB was holding onto pre-pandemic has totally evaporated. I've been trying to cancel my membership for two weeks and haven't gotten a response from their corporate team because, lo and behold, local staff aren't allowed to cancel it at the front desk. What a racket. Go to any other gym in NYC for a much better experience.

Decent gym, great staff. But there is no reason such restricted hours (they just further limited weekend hours and already open late Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Given the price point, very common over crowding, and this being smaller space than most bkb gyms, it should be open longer than other bkb locations, rather than much less (such as queensbridge, which is bigger, but open more hours / week).

I have mixed experiences at the OG Brooklyn Boulders. It's got a lot of interesting climbs and feels smaller than the Queensbridge location. The walls for ropes are also shorter/there are less. It's also interesting because they don't have single gender-neutral bathrooms like the Queens location so there's a bathroom you have to go into to wash your hands versus a handwashing station which makes it annoying due to covid limitations of how many people can be in the bathroom when that's also a changing area.
The staff is very brusque for the most part. I've never seen them explain how to wear a harness or shoes to someone versus other gyms. I've only ever felt actually welcome at the reception desk once. And I get that it's a gym but common courtesy goes a long way. For the most part different people and groups were courteous of our space and the mask policy but repeatedly everyone got yelled at over a speaker for being too close. The staff also just tells you to get off the mat randomly when it's sometimes really the only space you can be on to remain socially distanced.

To start positively I liked Brooklyn Boulders as it was my first time really doing any type of rock climbing since I was a child. At around $50 for 90 minutes I feel like I could recommend this place for beginners to get their fill of trying it out. Even with the time I was there, there were many climbers who clearly were advanced and had a lot of experience and could have fun testing out different leveled walls. There’s a good number of walls and courses and they are marked with starting spots and color coordinated rocks and tape.
The only thing stopping me from giving this place two stars is the employee who actually was kind and patient to my group. He explained stuff and walked us around the gym. Otherwise when walked in we accidentally walked through the wrong door and got yelled at. Checking in no one was welcoming or explained anything. I was given shoes and a harness that I didn’t even know how to put it on. For it being my first time I don’t even know the differences with the harnesses and ropes and it was like the front desk just expected me to know. For the most part different people and groups were courteous of our space and the mask policy and still repeatedly everyone got yelled at over a speaker for being too close. So many employees had an attitude and were overall rude or just ignored us. I work at a gym and I would never want someone who walks in to not feel welcomed, so that put a huge damper on things. If they really wanted people to space out more, they wouldn’t have classes (max 30) that overlap that could have up to 90 people in the den at once.

We really appreciate the helpful staff at this location. There was a mix up with BB Queensbridge and they quickly sent us over here for my daughter to complete her competition climb. When we got here, they made sure we were checked in quickly and waived our climbing fee because of the hassle that was caused. They also explained the climbs to us and answered a ton of our questions.
I would recommend this place for experienced climbers. There are plenty of climbs and lots of climbers to connect with. I would not know what the experience would be for new climbers. This gym is fairly busy but not any more busy than others across NYC.
Tip: book ahead online and also complete the waiver online before you arrive

When we first arrived, I asked the front desk if someone could help us since it was our first time rock climbing but was told we would need a private session for that, not helpful at all.
But luckily we met Jacob who offered to show us around. He was amazing and very patient with my autistic nephew. Those few minutes he spent teaching us were so helpful.
Most of the walls were off limits due to a competitions going on so that sucked.

UPDATE: After leaving the below one star review I was contacted by the general manager Quinn who was very receptive to my suggestions and took action immediately.
I'm happy to report that they've really turned this place around for the better. They clearly took the time during COVID to make improvements and rethink some things. New equipment. Floors, mats, surfaces and bathrooms are super clean. Soap, sanitizer and liquid chalk dispensers installed. It feels safe and habitable for employees and visitors alike. I'm super happy with their response to my complains and am excited to be going back to this iconic gym !
****
Many people are leaving 5 star reviews who appear to be "new" customers and first-timers who ended up inevitably loving rock climbing for the first time because it is truly awesome. This review is coming from the perspective of someone who goes there regularly...
I am deeply concerned for the visitors of Brooklyn Boulders Gawanus - including customers, parents, kids and employees.
As i’ve stated to employees multiple times - one who subsequently tell me that “corporate doesn’t care” - that I believe this location qualifies as a health hazard. I regularly encouter issues related to cleanliness, lack of facilities, facilities negligence, safety, child safety, poor training, unenforced roles and guidelines, loose holds, fungal growth, poor air quality and ringworm, and many, many other things. In my years at the gym I have not once seen someone actively cleaning the mats, bathrooms or common areas. Not one person wiping down tables or exercise equipment (realistically in an environment like this with calk someone should be constantly cleaning as I saw in another gym where someone was walking around with a vac thing... and there are normally three people sitting behind the desk, two of them talking and not doing anything. At the same time i’ve been told the reasoning behind the lack of care is that they are understaffed). There are no showers. I often have to remind the staff to replace toilet paper and soap. There also is a back “employees only” area that is almost never occupied.
The most upsetting thing about this to me is that for years BB was my zen place. I remember when people used to bring their computers and actually want to hang out there (when the internet wasn't so slow and it was far more habitable). I’ve watched a once iconic gym deteriorate into a unsafe environment, and with management that has shown no evidence that they care about their customers or community. As someone who understands the bottom line and necessity for growth, I get why corporate might be more interested in new locations rather than maintaining and elevating an existing location that already brings in the big bucks. I also know that new Brooklynites will come and they will continue to generate millions in revenues and get good reviews at that location by virtue of this. All the while the conditions will continue to be despicable and customers and employees will suffer because of this (and those like myself who complain will continue to be ignored). I truly believe that they have taken advantage of and endangered the amazing and diverse and community that their brand ethos claims to protect.
one star for good rout setting

climbing walls for different skill levels. Lot's of bouldering walls and a few autobelay machines for solo climbers. Nice place to come with kids to get them into climbing. Also has weights and a ping-pong table. Seems like a good place to socialize with other climbers for those who are into that sort of thing.
