I'm considering joining the Y again for my family, however we live closest to Albany, and I would like to second reviewer Jean who shared a sentiment I've also had since the Albany YMCA closed. In Jean's words -

The closure has created a serious gap in access to essential recreational and developmental programs—especially swimming—which are now primarily available at facilities in Delmar and East Greenbush.

Offers a variety of exercise and selfcare alternatives including multiple types of exercise equipment, weight lifting, swimming, basketball, ice skating, and many others. Several groups of people including pickleball, yoga, Zuma, and others.
I participate in pickleball and yoga class regularly. The beginner class for pickleball was very helpful to get started. The yoga instructors have all been good class leaders.

This iteration of a YMCA really needs to fix a lot of issues, from the poor upkeep in workout equipment to the.shower facilities. It used to be much better, can't understand what's going on there recently.

We are senior citizens. My wife likes to swim . She is an excellent swimmer and enjoys swimming at this Y. I was with her the last time and the staff was kind and helpful

I really want to love this gym, but a lot of the guys hog the machines, constantly drop stacks of weights, and don’t clean the machines after they use them.

The staff on the floor is too busy on their phones and chatting up their buddies to care.

Ice rink needs music during public sessions. Checking in takes foreverrrr to pay for ice. Shouldn't they have like frequent card membership that way ppl can just punch in like their regular gym membership. Schedule doesn't post timely. It is February 2 and no schedule for ice rink is posted yet . I mean. It's 2025. . Get with the program please.
March 2025: This is a follow-up. The schedule online for March was posted in a timely manner...I appreciated their effort , I was impressed . Thank you . Let's see what happens moving forward

I came here for the D Leauge program at the ice rink so this review is specifically about that. The only thing i didn't like was " we don't accept cards" which is strange to me I've never ran into that at any rink I've been to. Other than that it was fun I wish there was stuff like it closer to me and more often

I started my membership 9 years ago. After 2 knee replacements & 1 hip replacement surgery, I have just started back. I love the staff check in & exit friendliness, professional & courtesy, very high level of Emotional Intelligence. The spa & pool, (sauna & steam room are very clean & properly sanitized. The strength & cardio areas are TOP manufacturers & properly maintained w/cleaning spray and paper towels easily accessible for proper cleaning after use, The YMCA open/closing hours are perfect, wide range of times & all days. I’ve worked as a National Health Club Director, last 25 years, I have audited the “Good, Bad & Ugly “, truly this is One of the BEST, I’m so happy to have the privilege to have a membership here. The front end Director “MARK”, is one of the best, managers nationwide, my experience (50+ clubs, 12 states) Club excellence starts with LEADERSHIP, (owners, board & lead management, then individual employees) They do have 95% of service at highest level. Also, I have membership experience, at the top, most expensive & cheap wellness, health clubs & gyms in the (Albany) Capital Region area.

It's just never been run well. Any suggestions anyone makes are completely ignored.

There are lots of Pickleball players, but all the Pickleball is during normal work hours. And noone can go during normal work hours. They say the gym is taken between 5-8, but taken by what? A few people playing basketball when dozens want to play Pickleball after work. They don't care. This is why the place has problems. Just poor planning.

Serious decline since COVID. Unorganized. The app is not updated accurately. The classes start at the same time the child care is available, instead of say 10-15 min afterwards. There is no way to sign up online for the child care, even though that function is available for other classes. Front desk doesn’t know what is actually going on. The only free swim option for families is in the evenings during the week. I would love to take my toddler swimming in the morning that’s not available due to the summer camp. The AC has been on the fritz all year, there is a leak in the roof and a bucket in the walking track to catch any water. It’s just a mess, not worth the monthly price.

Good but hot tub wasnt working

Update July 2024:
When you cancel your membership, they keep charging you 30 more days for no reason. I've never seen such a policy before. Shame.

Pool is so crowded. And they close the lanes for some special programs. I paid there $100/month regularly. Last 3 months were just trash.

If you want to swim regularly, go find somewhere else for yourself.

Extra: sauna is not hot enough. You have to wait there 30 minutes to sweat.

I am a new member. I am very pleased with the facilities. We are on a family plan. My son enjoys going there and playing basketball. I enjoy swimming. I would definitely give this YMCA five out of five stars. It has been an enjoyable experience.

I never write a review this time I have too I had the worst experience here starting canceling classes and never get a call to inform me then came in and no one know wish class my son is the class started and everybody don’t know what to do after almost 15 minutes they ask me to join the class I told them I need my 30 minutes class for my son and the executive director said no he was the worst person there he said after a conversation with him we will refund you means we don’t need you here as a mom I work hard for my kids to pay this classes how come you treat me like that just because I asked for the full time class and it was there mistake they didn’t know what class and what teacher is with you have to be example for your coworkers sooo disappointed my son was crying so bad because he miss his class shame on you hopefully there so someone very responsible can read this message and just to say this is not my first time here my son did his classes but it’s my last time coming for sure

My father is in a wheelchair and I called ahead to see if this Y was accessible and if my father could get in the pool. Paige and all the staff at the pool were extremely helpful, showing us how to use the wheelchair lift to lower my father into the swimming pool. Aquatics director was also helpful in providing info about the chair. Thank you all for going above and beyond to make us feel included today!

This is a superb facility with a very wide range of activities from hockey to swimming to fitness training basketball volleyball free weights sophisticated resistance weights and a very helpful medical staff throughout the time they are open. I’ve been involved in YMCA fitness activities going back to my first skinny-dip swimming lessons in Lincoln Park over 65 years ago. I was a member of the Albany YMCA 1968-73during my medical school and internship training at AMC. The director At the AMC YMCA at that time was for Forbes Brown, Who is an intercollegiate heavyweight wrestling champion Cornell my alma mater. I was also a member of the varsity wrestling team but not at the level of distinction at Forbes Brown. I mention that YMCA because it’s today it was probably the best YMCA in the Capital District..I’m one of the very best in the Northeast United States.District at the very least.
