Catalyst was my favorite gym beautiful facility with great machines and space I left for military bootcamp and went to pay my cancellation fees and I was double charged $134 and when I called to let them know they’re claiming they never received the payments or “their system isn’t showing the payments” even though I’ve sent proof of payment and bank statements I’ve been going back and forth with them for going on 2 months with no resolution and I just got a call from collections requesting a payment that was made ! I sadly will not be returning to catalyst they have became money hungry and completely unorganized ! Scamming untrustworthy system !

Catalyst Fitness is currently at an ultimate low.

I’ve been a Premier member since ’23 and upgraded to Ultimate in ’25. I chose Catalyst as my main fitness hub in Buffalo because it was one of the better options available—especially due to the guest privileges and class access at Maple.
A close relative has been an Ultimate member since ’18. He has endured many price increases, membership switches, and perk changes.

FIRST YEAR OF MEMBERSHIP
I had purchased 35 trainer sessions. However, my first trainer quit without any notice to the trainees, and my second trainer was honorably discharged to the military. Unfortunately, I wasn’t appointed a new trainer, even with 12 or more sessions remaining. Those sessions expired. Fortunately, I was able to outsource to a friend of mine who is a certified trainer outside of Catalyst Fitness.
Shortly after I enrolled, the Elmwood club went under renovation. I was still locked into my contract and found myself commuting 30 minutes to Maple from Elmwood Village because there was no Colvin location at the time. The renovations finished just before the New Year’s rush, and the club instantly became overcrowded during nearly all hours of operation—leading into the next issue.

OVERCROWDING
Since late August 2025, there has been a noticeable spike in unfamiliar faces at Elmwood, including in the typically quieter 9pm–11pm window. Regulars know each other, and this sudden influx—lasting from August into mid-October—became hard to ignore. Meanwhile, traffic at the Colvin location, which is one of Catalyst’s larger clubs, has noticeably remained steady.
Elmwood is one of the significantly smaller clubs within Catalyst Fitness; the machines are packed ludicrously close together. As an example of Elmwood’s cramped layout, the hip-thrust machine has recently been positioned directly in the main walkway from the locker rooms—awkward and intrusive..
Instead of addressing the facility limitations, Jen Trees and Amy’s “solution” to the overcrowding is to eliminate guest privileges for Ultimate members effective December 1st. I was only made aware of this today, November 22nd. Guest privileges—one of Ultimate’s main selling points—allow just one guest per visit, yet Ultimate members are the ones being penalized.
The Elmwood club is simply too small to accommodate every member tier, so overcrowding was inevitable with the significant rise in personal health culture. But removing guest privileges only penalizes Ultimate members rather than addressing the real issue: the club’s limited space.

CLASSES
The close contending perk of Ultimate to guest privileges is the access to classes across most locations, rather than paying a fee for each class, but no, the only class held at CF Elmwood, boxing, is an additional charge to Ultimate members.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I genuinely wanted Catalyst to remain my long-term fitness oasis in Buffalo, but the decline in perks and overcrowding—paired with inconsistent facility quality—makes it difficult to justify the Ultimate membership. As an Ultimate member, I expected the perks I pay for to be honored—not quietly removed, especially considering I only learned of the change when I brought a guest today. Until Catalyst prioritizes transparency, proper facility management, member experience, and the fair treatment of its Ultimate members, I cannot recommend the Ultimate tier, nor can I confidently recommend Catalyst Fitness.

Too many people for an area the gym can't hold and membership prices increased with quality basically lowering.

The facility is exceptional, the staff are polite, and you get plenty of value for the money spent. However, when I went to cancel I was ignored for several days. Unbeknownst to me, I have to give a 30 day notice. Finally, Michelle called me a few days into the new billing cycle. Now I have to pay this gym another $39 for a month that I won't be using there facilities. It is absolute greed.

I don’t have any complaints about Catalyst Fitness — it’s an amazing gym, always clean and well-equipped. The only issue I’ve noticed is how loud some people can get. I was trying to focus on my workout while a few lifters were literally yelling and screaming at each other across the gym, and this has happened multiple times. I understand this is more of a personal behavior issue and not something the company can fully control, but I really believe there should be clearer signs reminding members not to yell or make excessive noise. A little bit of awareness and respect for others would make the environment much better for everyone.

Very nice facilities here. I stopped in while working in the area, and will definitely return in the future based on the professional and kind front desk staff, the plethora of equipment, and general cleanliness of the gym. I was here on a weekday from 1pm til 3pm and although it was far from empty, it wasn't prohibitively busy like other times of the day may be.

I enjoyed this gym while I was a member. Unfortunately, my experience trying to cancel my membership was extremely frustrating and disappointing. I moved out of Buffalo so I could no longer use my Catalyst membership. I spoke with Michelle several times on the phone about canceling my membership and I was given different answers each time. I followed every step she asked me to, but each time I provided what was requested, they changed the requirements or added new conditions. The lack of transparency and integrity in handling cancellations has left me with a negative impression of Catalyst. Potential members should be aware of the difficulty in canceling a membership.

When I signed up at Catalyst Fitness in 12/2024, I was able to “freeze” (put a hold) on my membership while I’m out of town attending college. I used their facilities on winter break in December 2024 and January 2025, then I put a “freeze” on my membership after winter break when I returned to college. I returned back to Buffalo for spring break in March 2025 and unfroze my membership and kept it active because I knew I was returning in May 2025 for the summer. Upon returning to school in September 2025, I emailed Catalyst to put a freeze on my account and I was informed that their policy had recently CHANGED and I was no longer allowed more than 1 freeze per year outside of medical or military absences. Given this information and the change to their policy, a membership and the costs wouldn’t make sense and I wanted to cancel the membership. I was informed that I now needed to pay a $100 cancellation fee to cancel my membership even though the change was a result in the original enrollment terms I agreed to! Apparently, it’s ok for them to change their contract with me without notice, but I am not able to cancel as a result of their change. I had received no mail or communication of this change to the terms and in fact, on my membership portal it still shows that freezing memberships are allowed.
I will never return to Catalyst ever! I do not recommend them--their policies are not college student-friendly for those temporarily living out of the area. They are not transparent to policy changes, inflexible and have bad business practices.

Catalyst Fitness is a fantastic gym with a great atmosphere. The staff are friendly, and the recent remodel has made the space even better. However, the mirrors in the shower area are a significant problem. Some members have reported that people take pictures in the shower area, which makes others feel uncomfortable. Addressing this issue would greatly improve the experience for everyone.

Facility is very clean. Staff is friendly. It would be great if they offered some classes at the Elmwood location.
Updated to add... I've been using my membership more regularly since I learned that it had been unpaused late in the fall of 2024 following the remodel. It was on pause because I spent about half of the year recovering from an injury. I learned that the cost of my membership had gone up because the pricing structure changed. The remodel offered some great improvements. It seems like there's a lot more equipment. Massage chairs are available for the membership tier that I am in. The sauna feels great in the winter! Learning that my membership had been reactivated motivated me to return. I was able to use some training credits and reconnected with Christine. She is excellent! She gives you personalized attention and helps you to develop a good routine.
This location is bumpin' most times that I've been there. In my opinion the best time to go is early. It's still busy and sometimes you're competing for equipment, but it beats going later in the day when foot traffic is even higher. The remodel was well done and I'm glad to be back.

if they’re going to keep accepting new members without thinking about how big the crowd is going to get they either need to bring in new machines/equipment to meet that demand or add some chairs next to the machines for people to sit while they wait 20 minutes just for one machine.

I use to have memberships at both here and La Fitness. I cut catalyst because La offers yearly memberships with no extra fees added once you pay your yearly membership. No random dipping in my acct or additional fees and I love that and it’s AFFORDABLE. This is something Catalyst should look into doing adding an additional fee 2 mths after signing up and paying the initial fee every year seems like a gimmick.

The air flow needs to be improved. 7/10 times I walk into this gym, I immediately feel stuffy air.. and this is year round. There was even one night when it was so stuffy inside, there was condensation on the windows. Because it’s so stuffy, it tends to smell during the busier hours. Like old gym equipment and BO. Also, the paper towels could be restocked more frequently and they need paper towels in the bathroom. Sometimes, the music is too loud and I can hear it over my noise canceling headphones. Those are my only complaints but the stuffy air really bothers me. They need a better HVAC system or just need to keep a door open or something. Noticed this at the Wehrle location too a few years ago.

This place is very misleading about their fees. I was lied to about sign up and annual fees. Now that I'm trying to cancel, I'm being told I owe different amounts by different people. Each time someone contacts me, the amount goes up.

I asked for transparency when I first signed up, but now, looking back on that conversation, it was clear the owner was just telling me anything I wanted to hear to get me locked in.

Since joining, the gym has become overcrowded and and the cleanliness has gone down significantly. The lockers have not been cleaned in a year. People put their dirty, wet shoes in them, and they drip all over, eventually drying into residual mud that is everywhere. The faucets rarely have handsoap, machines are broken, and things aren't getting replaced. There have been several days where no staff has shown up, and the gym is closed when it should be open. I've waited sometimes up to an hour to see if someone comes, but I always end up leaving.

The manager Mike is rude as hell. Belittles you over the phone and makes it hard to change your membership you never signed up for.
I was given help signing up and was supposed to be on month to month. I was signed up for a year. Thinking I was signed up for a month to month at a gym I’m not staying at, my phone gets a message 2 months after my membership saying I owe $92.
I call and am told I have a late fee of $40 due for a late fee on the day that my membership is due. The guy basically told me if I don’t pay the night before it’s due, they will charge me a late fee on the morning it’s due. Now why would it charge me a late fee the day before it’s due and then again on the day it’s due bright and early in the morning instead of the end of the day?
I should’ve never came back to this gym.

As a dedicated, long time member of catalyst fitness I hate to give a bad review but they have absolutely no spatial awareness for the amount of members they sign up, i get it, it’s a business you need to fro make money. But there are days I walk into the gym, and then around and walk right out. On top of the fact they over crowd their gyms they raised prices, so I’m paying more for a gym I go to less and less because I can accomplish more at my house than I can with the 1 available machine at catalyst, I feel like they chose quantity over quality and for that reason I give it 1 star.

Attention Amy of Catalyst and Catalyst gym members. The FTC has passed the Click-To Cancel-Law. The law is intended to simplify ending a gym membership. No more will you have to speak to the manager who is never there, Or get a note from your doctor, chiropractor or nurse practitioner, only to realize that ABC Financial has swindled another two months fees from your bank account. The new law should be in effect within 180 days.

Update: It’s as if they’ve read my wish list for more equipment and delivered! Since the renovation, this place is top notch!

———————-

I joined here six months ago on the advice of my fitness coach. I’m pleased with the facilities and the equipment, both of which are well-maintained. The staff are friendly and engaging and many of the other regular members are likewise, allowing you to “work in” on a machine between their work sets (I’ve also made some new friends this way 😊)

That said, the membership feels oversold against this location’s size. It could use two more bar cages, three more benches, two more cable machines and maybe 30% more mid-weight dumbbells. So I’m conscious that, if I’m there past 5pm on weekdays, that I’ll need to wait for my turn on equipment or pivot to a replacement exercise to keep my momentum.

There was also a period spanning several months where a group of about 20 boys from a well-known local private school would come in with their coaches, turning the whole facility into a pubescent Kidz Zone between 3 and 4:30pm 😒

Taking those factors into account, I’m able to consistently get three, solid 90-120 minute workouts in every week, covering barbell, dumbbell, bench, machines and turf. I’m happy to be a member and am looking forward to experiencing the results of the expansion!

i left this gym wishing i lived in the area just to be a regular at this catalyst fitness location. i’ve been to at least a couple dozen gyms, and this is one of the best.

machines for every muscle group are available to target each part of the muscle. these machines are well maintained and newer which made it so that contractions are felt and the movement is smooth.

in addition, the few power racks make it so that you’re guaranteed to secure one at some point during your workout. free weights section also has a huge amount of space. lots of cables and some great ergonomic attachments for pull downs.

i’ve been to way too many gyms where the bar on the smith machines does not reach the floor, this gym has two smith machines that do. this allows for a full range of motion on many workouts, without needing additional equipment.

the gym is clean, spacious, modern, and simply amazing. locker rooms are updated and clean with great lighting. staff is very personable and outgoing, even at 5am.

i don’t know much about price points for being a member, but i can guarantee you get what you pay for. i am more into strength training and weightlifting so i did not explore much of the athletic training section, but it is there and it is big. lots of athletic training equipment is available.

as a personal trainer myself, i couldn’t help but notice how interactive the training sessions are. i watched the trainer really get involved in the exercises their client was performing and that is rare to see. she was performing the movement with her client while watching for form and range of motion. i loved seeing that.

no matter your goals in the gym, im certain you can reach them here. if im ever back in the area, i will be here without a doubt. :)

Gym is cool. Love what they did with the renovations. Not too sure how I feel about the warrior room being commandeered for Boxstar. Is that going to take away from the members who paid extra to have access to that area? Also when the hell are they going to fix the Red Light Therapy machine?!? I've been complaining about it for about a month now! When I 1st started using it, it would start red and STAY red for the whole duration of the session. Now it starts red and after only a few SECONDS the lights turn white, definitely not getting the therapy I'm paying for! And I believe one of the bulbs are still out! Is that the cause for it not working they way it should?! Please fix! Other than that, those renovations have definitely made this gym one of the better ones in the area.

Nice gym, close to home. Friendly staff and clean for the most part. The one issue I’ve come across a few times now & im pretty sure a lot of other people have is you’ll get someone who leaves their personal items like a water bottle or cellphone at a machine while they workout on another machine. It happens almost every time I go and I’m in there all the time. I was in there yesterday and got into two arguments with two guys. I went to a machine that was free and a random guy just walked up on me and said he was using it, HOW?! No one was here when I got here. Another guy would leave his cellphone on one machine and walk over to use another machine taking up both machines. These gyms are already crowded and I’m sure 100% of us that come here are working professionals and don’t have the luxury to spend all day in The gym. I wish management would do something about this. Other than that I have no complaints.

This gym literally tries to steal from you. After being with the gym less than 2 months. I attempted to pay the monthly membership. I had no idea that my account was late nor did they send me a notification when the bill was due. Instead they slapped on late fees without warning increasing my payment amount. After less than a year I was changed annual fees on top of late fees claiming that I owed over $100 nearly quadruple the amount I would normally pay. If you attempt to cancel they will claim you signed a 1 year contract. The contract says nothing about staying with them for an entire year. They will literally do anything to prevent you from canceling your membership so they can take more money from you. These are nothing but greedy people that just want to steal from you.

I woke up today to the notification that my credit card was charged for my monthly membership dues. Normally this is fine. I pay dues for a gym that I use. Except the last month the gym has been closed. No notice was given. Original timeframe was “10-14 days” which was in November.

I like this gym. I’ll consider revisiting this review if management finds a way to make things right with the members that they continue to charge for access to a gym that we cannot go to.

#1 quality you should look for in a gym is that it is OPEN. Construction had been going on at the gym for a long time. Then they shut the doors for "10-14 days" which is turning into a month or more. Terrible business decision at a terrible time for members. It demonstrates low empathy for members. Find a different gym because you'll never know when Catalyst will screw members again

Was a nice gym but members have gotten the short end of the stick with this renovation. With 2 days notice we were told the renovation would close the gym for 10-14 days, then they tacked on another 10 days with no plans to give refunds or discounts for the entire month that they closed.

Less amenities (less clubs, no guest passes, etc) than I signed up for, but there's a fee to downgrade membership. So they can downgrade the amenities, but I can't downgrade membership without $90 fee. 🤔

I recently joined Catalyst a few days ago and couldn't be happier with the exceptional service I got from the salesperson, Mike. This is my first ever google review and I felt compelled to share my fantastic experience.

I first spoke with Mike over the phone and he was able to answer all my questions and set up an appointment for me to come in and get a tour. From the moment I walked into the gym, Mike's professionalism and enthusiasm were evident. He greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel right at home. Mike took the time to listen to my current circumstances and tailored a membership package that was perfect for me.Throughout the entire process, Mike was patient and attentive, answering all my questions and addressing any concerns I had.

Mike's exceptional customer service extended beyond the initial sign-up. He followed up with me to ensure I was settling in well and it was clear he genuinely cares about the well-being of the gym's members. I came in with a friend who was not signing up (at least that day), and he even gave him 2 free day passes to the gym!

What I like about Catalyst, is that it's not just a gym but more like a community. People like Mike, is why going local in Buffalo will always be better than going to national franchises. This location on elmwood is currently undergoing renovations on one side and I am excited to see what the gym ends up looking like when it's done.

TL:DR: If you're considering joining Catalyst Fitness on Elmwood, I wholeheartedly recommend seeking out Mike for your membership needs.

I give this gym high marks for the friendliness and expertise of the staff. Chris, the trainer, is a warehouse of athletic and nutritional knowledge and knows exactly how to push me to reach beyond my goals:)
Bibi, who cleans, is a one-woman powerhouse! I have never seen the bathrooms cleaner:) She truly enjoys her job, too, singing as mops!!
I always look forward to going to the gym, now:)

Terrible customer service and they’re calling themselves a “premier club”. I’ve been a member here for a couple years there is literally nothing premier about this club. It’s small, over crowded, has shower rod curtains for doors in the two changing rooms, and you see people “cleaning” but will see the same dirty wrappers in cardio machines for weeks.

I have the second tier membership which I thought allowed guests at my home gym, as I have brought guests before. Today my nephew was in town and I wanted to take him but I was told “my guest privileges are only for express clubs” that I have literally never been to and again to call Elmwood anything other than an express is a joke. I’ve brought a guest maybe 3 times prior to this so I guess it’s possible others just let me bring in people. Not today, they wanted to charge a 14 year old kid who wanted to try the gym for the fist time $20 or literally double my monthly fee so I could always bring a guest. Like he used the situation as an up sale opportunity in front of my nephew who was getting upset. He’s a kid.

I was willing to deal with waiting for machines, no amenities, and cleaning equipment before I use it for the price but after how I was treated today with my nephew, I’ll be joining somewhere else.

My husband goes here, and he absolutely loves it. He has a personal trainer there 4 days a week and looks forward to it every time.
They are expanding more, which is awesome to see.
I used to go here too and it was a really nice facility with a great staff. I'm just more of an at-home-workout kind of person.

When I called to cancel my membership, she told me I had to go online and send them a message saying I waned to cancel or come in in person.

I didn't even have the option to cancel online, I hade to send a message to them informing them I wanted to cancel and wait for their reply.

When asked if she could do it for me right there, she said no. Terrible customer service on a regular basis at the desk by the young employees on the weekends.

Joined this location because other than LA Fitness it is the only gym that is in the downtown area. Still takes 20 minutes to get there and the gym is ALWAYS crazy busy (I have tried many different times throughout the day/week). The membership is too high for the size of the facility so you’re always fighting for equipment or you’re stuck on the treadmill just waiting for something to free up, so you’re there even longer than you should be if it weren’t so crowded all the time. Don’t waste your time or money until they either expand or reduce membership.

Friendly staff, convenient location, plenty of equipment. Owners have foresight to expand based on volume of clientele.

I see gyms as places for self improvement and advocacy. They offer a place for us to better our body, mind, and social skills. They’re a good cross section of society and you’ll meet friendly and unpleasant individuals alike.

If you need something, broker a conversation beginning with kindness. Someone takes your equipment? Ask a question - they may not know they did. Most people will let you work in with them between sets - within reason. Consider that the gym and clientele may need improvement, but so may we.

I worked previously as a trainer, in retail, and in healthcare. I’m a believer in taking responsibility for myself. Ask how we can change, less how others can. You dollar cost average into markets for retirement, Catalyst is a solid local business to “health cost average” into yourself.

Thanks to those who keep this health Mecca afloat! Props to Chris and Mark for being great personalities within their team!

Nice gym and I loved how it's next to the movie theatre. I no longer live in the area. I liked how it was close to my former apartment. I liked how the staff was very friendly and for the most part cleanliness was taken care of. Only one night I saw too many people in there at once and decided not to go in, but otherwise it always felt like the right amount of people. It needs a better ab workout equipment like the one they have at the Niagara Falls Blvd location. The only thing I would say this location is seriously lacking is a hydrobed. I really hope Catalyst decides to come out to East Aurora because out here in the East Aurora/Elma/Marilla/Colden/West Falls/Wales/South Wales/Holland/Java/North Java/Strykersville area we have to travel 20 to 30 minutes each way for a nice gym, and that's on a good weather day and many of us cannot afford to anymore with the gas prices

Pretty good gym, it has a lot of machines and floor space. It's pretty crowded a lot which is kind of a downside. The locker room has a sub optimal layout. I like the red white and blue and green floors tho, most other gyms are just beige. The walls are also colorful to now that I think about it.

Need a manager? They aren't there
Need help in Billing? They aren't there
Have a complaint? Join the club

I went in April and requested to cancel my membership. I was told I was all set. I noticed recently that I was charged for 7 months. I went to the club to cancel and request a refund. I had to wait because the person in front of me had the same exact problem. Asked for the manager and there was not a manager at this location anymore. I asked for someone in billing, and they weren't there for the rest of the day.
I called a few days later and spoke with someone in billing and they told me I would be refunded.
They refunded three months as a "courtesy". I appreciate the "courtesy" but I would prefer if when I am told I was getting a refund that I got the full amount.

I was cancelling my membership because I moved away from the club. I probably would have rejoined next year when I moved again closer to another location.

After this experience, I will seek out alternative clubs.
