Do not join this gym! Used to be a great membership, but the top tier requires committing for a year. No problem until they remove guest passes, which are stated as part of the membership at the point I signed the year contract, halfway through the year. Having the ability to bring in guests is part of the reason I committed to paying $40/month for the next year, and to remove it halfway through is absurd and dishonest. Not only that, nothing was posted or communicated so I had to hear it through the grapevine. Absolutely no solution was offered at the front desk other than that my guest could sign up for a membership. Why would my out of town guest who's only here for 3 days enroll for a membership??? Absolutely dishonest money grubbing with no accountability.

This gym is only about money! They have just informed all the seniors that our memberships are all canceled as they will no longer accept Silver Sneakers. Apparently the woman that owns all these gyms isn’t rich enough. Please, boycott Catalyst Fitness as they have no soul. Oh, and the gym isn’t any better than any of the others in the area (and can be more difficult to get on the machine you want). You’re better off at LA Fitness anyway.

Michelle is a TERRIBLE accounts manager. She refused to freeze my membership, even though it was within my contract and stated as possible on their website. She completely made up her own rules. She’s unprofessional, difficult to work with, and her elementary grammar in every email is astonishingly embarrassing. It’s like negotiating with a 12 year old (including the lack of emotional intelligence). This could’ve been a great gym experience if it wasn’t for one person acting like a dictator and refusing to simply follow gym policy. Save yourself the headache and go corporate with LA fitness, therefore there’s more than one person to refer to if you need further assistance.

Since May 2025, I’ve called upwards of ten times to speak with Jen Trees regarding both my membership and my wife’s. Despite repeated attempts, I’ve received no response from Jen or anyone in leadership. Five months later, we are still being charged for memberships we no longer use or agreed to maintain.
It’s disappointing to see how much Catalyst has changed. The focus has shifted from supporting members’ health and wellness to prioritizing profit margins and retention numbers. That’s not the community-oriented approach we originally signed up for.

Poor customer service. I would avoid this gym. Cancellation is very challenging and there is never a manager to speak with and requests are done via email. I cancelled my membership on 9/24 and I am typically billed on the 1st. I received an email indicating that my membership has been cancelled, I am thinking everything is all good. Suddenly I am billed for almost $70 on 10/10, which is almost double the membership. I called the gym and was advised that I need to pay another month plus I was charged fees because I didn't pay my membership on the 1st. The gym never charged me on the 1st. Plus since I cancelled prior to the 1st, I didn't expect them to charge me any more. I called and left voicemails with no return calls and emailed again twice. Still got nowhere. I stopped in and spoke with front desk who advised me I cannot speak with a manager as they aren't there on Fridays. Front desk told me he sent another email but indicated the fees won't likely be waived. He didn't seem like he wanted to help nor did he even seem to care. This is hands down the worst customer service I've ever had. If you are looking for a gym, I would strongly advise against this gym. They definitely have deceptive billing practices and should probably be investigated.

They will steal your money. Genuinely. Long story short I had to fight with them for days to cancel my membership (It's packed all the time and just isn't worth 25$ a month), had to pay a $50 cancellation fee. 3 months later I'm getting charged $25 again, try contacting them I got no response after reaching out twice. Had to dispute on my credit card and block the merchant from charging me again. The entire time met with no professionality and rude customer service. Avoid starting a membership here at all costs.

My Husband and I love the Maple location for its cleanliness and accessibility to the equipment. The sauna is by far my favorite thing to use, and the smoothie bar is delicious. Staff anre anlways kind and helpful with questions. Over all, we love going there and would recommend it to others.

One star was being very kind. All I can say is this is probably the most deceptive business in all of Buffalo and it starts at the top. Fee's Fee's Fee's is the business model for this company. $100 cancellation fee, raising the price of memberships without notice, charging excessive fees if the can't collect dues on said date, just a pure case study in lack of ethics. Too much to list here but this complaint has been submitted to the NY State AG's office as consumers should not have to tolerate this nonsense when using a service, they try to hit you for $100 on the way out the door.
The reviews on this company speak for themselves. If your thinking of joining this albatross, BEWARE!!!

I have been starting this gym (best fitness) 2010 at the Eggert and Sheridan DMV plaza and after they shut down, I continuing my workout with same gym until last week ( they changed the name couple of times) and last week, gym staff stopped me and asked me to pay $30 every month, that is double payment, what I m paying every month now and I haven’t received any letter, email or text from them , very disappointed, I hope gym management will contact me and keep their members happy

I've been a member of Catalyst for several years. The gym is generally clean and equipment updated, but the men's bathroom is constantly in need of cleaning. The subject of this review is the very poor customer service experience. My keycard was denied, and then Darnell at the front desk started into a speech about how I'm paying $26.99 for multi-use locations and how I needed to upgrade to $29.99 or drop down to one-location for $19.99. I said, fine, downgrade me to this Maple Rd location. He said, "that doesn't apply to this location." Then he preceded to tell me that my link to the Visa card will now incur an additional $3/MONTH fee. I asked him about whether I was currently paying that and we went round and round over the definition of "current." Finally I agreed, but didn't have my bank info to avoid the $3/month fee. I asked if I could still work out and he said "no, you cannot work out without signing a new contract." Since I was concerned about 6 pages of fine print and possible penalty clauses I left. Unbelievable....

Facilities are great. Equipment gets fixed quickly and is well maintained.
My issue is this location recently switched so that its base membership level is no longer allowed at this location, and as far as I can tell there was no notice this was happening until it happened.
I walked in on a Wednesday and my key tag no longer worked and the girl at the desk didn’t notice me slip in. On Thursday a guy working the desk stopped me and informed me of the change. He said when I was done working out I could let them know what i wanted to do. When I made it back that kid was gone and another one stood there and said “oh we can’t switch that here.” So obviously they did a bang up job training the staff on this change.
So my choices were upgrade my membership or go to another location and sign up there, zero assistance with the transition they didn’t tell anyone was coming.

I have never written an online review- I have never felt the need to until now. I have been with Catalyst since Colvin was women-only, and then I transitioned to Maple once Colvin was under renovation.
I was frustrated at how long the renovations took, but I stayed loyal to Catalyst. I loved the equipment and amenities. As a college student, I was also happy to pay a "freeze plan" in which I only paid $5 a month to keep my membership active while I was away at school. I looked forward to going to Catalyst during my winter and summer breaks from school, knowing I was paying a fair price and getting great perks.
This plan no longer exists (which was not clearly communicated to me until I called for clarification). As I am now moving to my college town full-time, I decided to cancel my membership.
Attempting to cancel my membership has been an exhausting process. I never complain, but I have had to hunt people down, call several times, and be told "the back office is still processing this" far too often. I looked at my bank account, and to my dismay, realized that I was still being charged the new increased membership fee.
I was even asked to send proof of my move, which I did. I got no response after that, and then, after I called for clarification, I was told to email my proof of move to yet another person. I am lucky I called and clarified, or else who knows if my information would have ever been processed. Members (especially of several years) should not have to hunt people down to make sure their membership can be processed and cancelled. It's that simple.
My mom and I called, to which the representative said the documents still needed to be processed through the “cancellation department.” It turns out, she herself is the cancellation department. Lots of smoke and mirrors.
I love Buffalo. I love people. And I love moving my body. I hope Catalyst can get back to these simple roots rather than recklessly pursuing profit over people. I miss the intimate and compassionate feel of this gym.
I hope these sentiments can be a Catalyst for change! While this business model may work for some, it simply isn’t conducive to a student’s lifestyle, especially those who go away to school. I feel that Catalyst should offer more for students.
I wish Catalyst all the best, and maybe there would be a day I return. But a lot would have to change between now and then.

If I could give 0 starts I would. Consistently crowded all times of the day. They can also change the fee at will, unlike what it says in the contract. If you try to cancel they will keep billing you for months even after repeated phone calls to the club and emails of them claiming “it’s been fixed” to it still not be fixed. Happened to multiple people I know. They’re even trying to get me to pay for a month they claim I went once when I moved out of the area the month prior. DO NOT GO HERE THEY WILL TRY TO STEAL YOUR MONEY!!

I love it here! You can’t beat all the amenities for the monthly price. If you’re looking for easy access to all the equipment you want to use, I would recommend going during off peak times. But even if you don’t, the people here are friendly and will be courteous if they know you’re waiting.

I had the same contract for 4 years, I paid the same amount every month on time for 4 years. When I declined to "upgrade" I was told by Joelle that I didn't have a choice. I let him know that it says in my contract that my price can't change. He just smiled and said they don't have to follow what the contract says. Im not a lawyer but I thought that's the whole point of a contract. It's not his fault though, he was just doing what he was told. Kind of a crummy way to do your members. He canceled me on the spot, without a fee though, so thanks for that I guess.

I’ve been a member for over 3 years. Catalyst has great facilities but unfortunately, zero business ethics and no regard for safety. My wife signed up over 2 years ago, used the facility maybe 5 times. She starts getting calls about a month ago saying the account is past due and billing method no longer working. We were unwittingly paying for this membership all this time (our bad for not noticing, thought it expired after a year). Talked to Michelle in billing/collections today, asked that they cancel the membership and to remove any remaining balance + late fees since my wife hasn’t walked through the doors in 2 years. Not looking for any refund, just want them to wipe out anything they show as owed - a couple months of membership and late fees Michelle tells me they can’t do that and I would need to speak to the manager. “Ok great, let me speak to the manager” - “oh, they’re not here, you would have to call them directly” - “ok, we’ll just have the manager call me at their convenience” - “I can’t do that, you need to call, I can’t ask them to call you” - “Seriously? You can’t pass a message to the manager to call me?” - “No, I can’t do that”.
Wow! Just wow! Why is the fitness industry so shady? I have had my own membership there for years, really like the gym, but now I’m going to have to cancel my membership as well as my wife’s because of their predatory and unethical business practices. So instead of them just canceling a membership that a person didn’t even know they had anymore and simply removing the last couple months of past due charges (after having already collected hundreds of dollars while providing no service), now they are going to have 2 memberships cancelled ( my wife’s and mine), bad reviews like this one, I will warn anybody who mentions Catalyst about their shady business practices, and they will continue to cost themselves money by trying to collect a faux debt that will never be paid.
When they could have just done the right thing and they would still have me as a paying member, no bad reviews and no further collection expenses. When a company makes a decision to shoot themselves in the foot like this, it tells me everything I need to know about them. Good riddance Catalyst!
Now I have to find a new gym that isn’t shady, which will be a very difficult task. What is it with this industry? Absolutely chock full of degenerates who operate fitness facilities with no ethics whatsoever.
At least now I won’t fall and get injured when they shut all the lights off in the gym right at closing time to encourage people to leave. Yeah, seriously, they do this as a standard practice while people are holding heavy weights and trying to navigate in the dark through a maze of steel equipment and weights. I complained and they told me it’s the only way to get people to leave and it’s worth it even if someone gets hurt, even if it’s an employee, not just members.
What else would anyone need to know about this company, management and ownership. Really is a shame when the facilities themselves are great but the people running them have no ethics and zero regard for the safety of their members and their own employees.

Like why work at the front desk with an attitude? My husband had a billing problem and they told him if he didn’t pay the 20 dollar late fee he had to leave?!? This gym is a joke. I canceled my membership in JUNE, and they’re STILL billing me. I went in person to cancel, called THREE times to confirm, and yet they claim to have “no record of my cancellation.” How does that even make sense. Their management is completely disorganized and clearly only cares about squeezing as much money as possible out of people.
This isn’t the first financial issue I’ve had with them, either. They don’t take responsibility for their mistakes. Save yourself the stress and go to Planet Fitness or any other gym that actually respects their members.

If I could give this place 0 I would. I verbally canceled my membership in June over the phone. Mind you, I am on a month to month membership. I canceled back in June over the phone because I hadn’t use the membership in over a month(since May). All of a sudden I was charged $160 today. When I called the woman I spoke with told me that I need to come in when a manager is there to cancel and that a verbal for my contract that I don’t have - is unacceptable. I work two jobs and I can’t make it in when a manager is there, and now I’ve been charged a massive fee for a membership that I haven’t used since June . Beware. The cancellation process is difficult and apparently you can’t just say you will no longer be attending for a month to month “membership”. Absolute insanity. Edit to add response to owners reply- I shouldn’t have been charged until October. If I haven’t used the gym since July which I find hard to believe being that the last time I was charged was in June- then I should have only been charged up until August the latest. Which was not the case. You charged me until October. And magically now my account can be canceled online? My membership was $25 a month. I was charged $157.96. Also I want to add you guys didn’t have my bank account information- you had a debit card that I lost on file. How you managed to get my bank info is beyond me and I will be speaking to someone legally in regards to this. For a small business you run it like a corporation and have no empathy or understanding. Shame on you.

Attention Owners of Catalyst and gym members. The FTC has passed the Click To Cancel Law. The law (in theory), will simplify ending a gym membership. No more You have to speak to the manager who is never there, Or get a note from your doctor, chiropractor or nurse practitioner, Or show a utility bill indicating that you've moved more than 25 miles from one of their locations. Since when did ending a gym membership become like leaving the Mafia? I realize that many gyms make good money from ABC Financial by charging former members in perpetuity, and even sending their accounts unlawfully into collections, but the page has turned. The new law should be in effect within 180 days, so please re write your contracts accordingly. If I signed up with one or two clicks on a phone, I should be to cancel in the same manner. Thank you for your cooperation.

Why is this place pushing the Catalyst App down our throat? The policy of "Get the Catalyst App or get out" is insulting.I was told I could not participate in the aerobic classes unless I was registered with the Catalyst App. I mentioned this to the manager and she said "That's our policy". Hello, my insurance company had paid for the highest top notch my full membership and then after signing up I was told this. What did this place do before Apps were around? Why do other facility not mandate an App? Why so pushy with the App? I do not trust Apps as I had been hacked before and this place has my personal heath information. I consider this a breach of the HIPPA law and find the "either our way or the highway" approach offensive. I've asked the manager to only sign me up for 2 aerobic classes and she refused. How hard could it be to sign up a person for a class and why a total refusal to do so? Pushing a customer into an App puts a bad taste in my mouth. Considering the uncompromising and refusal position of the manager to simply type in a few keystrokes to register for a simple aerobics class only erodes a customers trust and loyalty. I am hoping the policy of "No App No Class" is considered before we find pl

Good gym with a lot of bad. I’d like to start with the good which is the staff are often great here. They are kind, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. This is something I am used to at all locations. that basically is the end to the good at this gym. When it comes to use and access at this gym it is horrific. It is often packed with crowds that makes it almost impossible to complete a coherent workout. You will find yourself standing waiting for machines more than you will actually workout. They have an extremely limited selection for the quantity of people who go to this gym. Nobody cleans equipment here because they have to rush to the next available machine.

Their lockerroom setup is such that if two people are entering and exiting at the same time, they are garunteed to bump into each other. The music is played wayyyy too loud for comfort - I can't even enjoy my own music in my headphones, that's how loud it is. Otherwise, good place to get a workout in and sometimes they have free smoothie samples. Personally I prefer other catalyst locations, where I can hear myself think. I don't normally write reviews, but I got frustrated trying to get a refund back for freezing, and then getting charged for a full month.
Not even going to talk about the availability of the racks/benches, basically:
No contract, cancelled during winter time 2022, redid contract in Jan 2023, you get charged another annual maintenance fee regardless of when the last time you paid for it was.
Then they mentioned freezing after the fact, so I did that in December 2023, mentioned 3 months, only got put down for 1 (with no confirmation email). Did not get any refund.
Went to the gym at least 5 times to ask for the refund, did not even get a reply from the manager.
I thought Catalyst was good, but it's just a gym at the end of the day.

I would say this is the best gym I have been at! I'd give it a 5, but the gym for the last 6 months has been very over crowded and the stair machines have been down quite often.
However the equipment that does work is top tier equipment and eveyone is very friendly.

The space and equipment is really nice but it’s basically the UB student gym. Constantly crowded with college kids and nearly impossible to get on a machine. If you’re over 25 or want to actually use the equipment it may not be the place for you.

If you're looking for a gym with a good sauna do not go here. Recently they started turning the sauna off at 10pm. Up until recently, I would've given this gym 5 stars because they kept the sauna hot until 11pm. Although now the sauna is still open until 11pm, it is not nearly as hot as it used to be/should be. I work late and I cant go to the gym until later in the day and I love to finish my workouts with a hot sauna. I used to love this gym. I recruited a lot of my friends to this gym and we loved their sauna. Why not keep it hot until 11pm? A lot of those same people are now leaving because they want a gym with a good sauna. I hope this changes or I will start looking for a new gym.

New nice gym to workout at. The gym could use some more cleaning, always see spider webs and dust everywhere. Some equipment seems to be always out of order and not working. Also it’s a lady that cleans the men’s bathroom and comes in whenever she wants which is weird. I’ve been in the bathroom washing my hands turn around and see a woman while naked men is walking around is kinda creepy. Could you imagine a man working in the ladies room while they were in there naked?! I may start going to a different location, other than that this gym isn’t bad.

I've been to many different gyms around the country, and have been coming here for about 8 months, 6-7 days a week, since moving back to Buffalo. It's probably the best gym I've been to in terms of quality, price, and location. All the equipment and machines you could ask for, and they're constantly adding more stuff monthly. Can get pretty crowded at peak hours but that's just a testament to how good this gym is. I've never had a bad experience with the staff or gym members

The music and bass is incredibly loud, especially in the bench/free weight area. Can barely hear my own music/podcasts in my noise cancelling ear buds. Multiple of the cheap “new” 3-in-1 sinks in the bathroom have been broke for weeks so there’s only one weak air dryer that everyone has to use. No paper towels to use in the mean time.

Yes this is a very crowded gym at peak hours like after work. I will say members are very respectful to one another. They offer a wide range of classes and have several studios for group classes. The sauna is the hottest I’ve ever experienced. the machines are newer and count your reps. Overall recommend, if you don’t like it too crowded come during less popular times.

I’ve been going to here for over year with my own membership and then as a guest when I started a relationship. Their staff does not treat guest memberships well. It’s a gum full of gossiping women and men who don’t do their jobs. When they were rude first I became rude back. At the end of the day I did get kicked out for sweating but the facility is nice staff is awful. When I was paying a membership they overcharged several times at the maple location. The women’s bathrooms are always messy anyways. And it really is full of judge mental staff who claim to be professional but are anything but. Don’t recommend unless you’re a influencer. And I did follow guest protocol. I can give the information I signed in as if you wouldn’t be so rude. Didn’t even give me the chance to talk today. Lol

Catalyst likes to turn off the lights in the locker room and shower area exactly at closing time. A gym will usually give its members enough time to exit the gym, not here. When you have customers at any establishment, you’re respectful to those who are still inside. I was still naked when the lights were turned off and it becomes pitch black! This gym couldn’t even begin to tell you about customer service and how to properly treat your customers. It’s ridiculous and I will be taking my money elsewhere.

The employee here Kaishuan Cathey made me feel like a criminal when i tried to go to the gym today. I was going with 3 of my friends, 2 of my friends payed for a day pass and my one friend had a subscription that you could bring a guest with so i was going as her guest. As i am trying to walk in with her he yells at me “what are you doing” while shrugging at me, i say back to him “my friend has the membership that you can bring a guest with” he then says no so i move away from the gym entrance to figure things out, he then yells again “what are you doing” shaking his head when i was simply standing there. My friend then went to go speak with another employee who was very helpful and respectful and she explained that the memberships had changed. My friend then came back 5 minutes later to cancel her membership for the way we were all treated. More happened with this story but the moral of the story is you should not treat customers in the way Kaishuan did. I will not be returning to this gym and neither will my friends that Kaishuan also disrespected.

I was visiting catalyst today and the employee Kaishuan Cathey was extremely rude to me and my friends over a misunderstanding, instead of explaining the situation he scolded me and my friends. He lied and tried to say that my friend was trying to sneak into the gym when there was a misunderstanding. My friend cancelled her membership because of the way we were being treated by Kaishaun. He represents the company very poorly, i have never had a poor experience with catalyst before but he ruined it for me and others.

Even during Covid and the gyms are open, they still charge me full price even when I pay to have a guest. They are nothing but a money hungry company that does not abide by the contracts they have people sign. Time to find a new gym and I will never say anything good about this gym.ever. If I can give it negative rating I would do that in a heart beat. Still the same practices, even a few years later.

The gym itself is decent, however, the memberships are a scam. There are so many hidden fees. Last year, I purchased a one year membership which is now expired. I went in to extend my membership by one month, on a month to month contract. They tried to make me pay the Enrollment fee even when I was already enrolled and just wanted to change my payment plan.

Gym isn’t a bad gym for the higher end gyms in Buffalo. 5-7 is a bad time to go if you want to work out. They have a lot to offer at the maple location just one thing that I hate is the lack of cleaning of the facility. Bathrooms never cleaned and paper towels seems to run out. Overall a good gym. FYI they let you rock slides and crocs here. Don’t be that guy.

Outstanding, state of the art equipment and awesome layout. A serious bodybuilding/workout facility and not a glorified gossip and meet market like many other health clubs. Another major plus is that a formerly vacant retail building was renovated and converted into an awesome modern gym. Friendly courteous staff. The only negative is the music, get rid of that techno noise pollution and electronic disco and play rock n roll instead or soft rock.

The facility is nice but the memberships are scams. Just a fee for everything. Waited to cancel my membership so I was out of my contract just to still have to pay a cancellation fee. Mostly enjoying this gym. The app is easy to use, and I like the variety of classes. Quality of instruction is good, and staff is friendly. I am only there for the group classes; can't speak to the equipment but it seems like a large, well appointed gym space.
Where I have to deduct a few stars is in cleanliness and locker room etiquette. Everyone is using the sauna in their sweaty workout clothes and sneakers, which I've never seen before, and based on the candy wrapper (??) that's been on the floor in there for at least a week, it's not cleaned very often, either. Gym goers are in there on their phones, or stretching, and it's weird. Cleanliness in the showers is also questionable: how are you ladies losing so much hair? Have seen some glops of conditioner or whatever persisting for a few days at a time, which tells me these showers are not cleaned daily or well.

It needs more ways for the patrons to clean the equipment as its being used. Ive been to more than a half dozen other gyms in the buffalo area, and all of them had more access to clean the equipment before/after each use. This is true for both Pre and Post pandemic. Even the other Catalyst gyms I've been to had more than this facility, and this is the largest one. All the other facilities had 1/3rd the space and equipment, and probably 3 times as many places to get sanitation wipes/spray/towels. I don't want to have to worry about getting or giving a staph/impetigo/worts/fungal infection just because there's not towels and sanitation spray available. I also don't want to fear losing the machine or piece of equipment i'm on because I have to walk halfway across the gym to spend extra time to get a paper towel and spray. Those are just the health/convenience concerns, let alone if someone has protein farts or is sweating out a mess of food they recently ate and i'm the next one to use the machine they were on. It's disgusting. This gym is nice, it has a lot of great equipment and training options, as well as services, but without more means to clean it, I'd rather go anywhere else, theres really no reason for it.
