I wanted to get back to "The Gym" in East Hill Plaza, and my niece recommended "Coach Hanshaw Personal Training" (CHPT) to help me get restarted. I've been very impressed with Coach Hanshaw’s professionalism, expertise, and experience in personal training. She and the other trainers on the team bring a level of excellence I have not encountered elsewhere. They work effectively with a wide range of ages and abilities, including this senior citizen. What I’ve appreciated most is Coach Hanshaw’s disciplined, yet kind, approach. I found Coach Jessica through The Gym Ithaca website when looking to build exercise into my routine. After consulting with her, she recommended I work with Coach Rachel who was the perfect fit for my needs. I would say I was active but a deer in headlights when I first stepped foot into the gym. I had no idea what to do or where to even start.
Rachel didn't just give me routines to do. She talked through the technique, the muscles being used, safety, and how to gauge what my body is feeling on different days. She also pushed me to find a perfect balance of challenging but manageable which is something I would have never figured out on my own.
Now as I continue to practice the routines Coach Rachel set up for me, Coach Rachel and Coach Jessica say hi and have small talk in the mornings which makes me more confident walking around the gym and it helps wake me up before I work out.
This was the best investment I have ever made for myself and I can't thank CHPT enough for the guidance, knowledge, support, and kindness they have and continue to show me.

I was trying to get in better shape after my pandemic weight gain and was stopped in my tracks by sciatica. I approached a Coach Hanshaw Personal Training member for advice and was immediately shown some stretches that would help. I signed up that day and with a couple of weeks of strength training was able to do more cardio than I had done in a decade.
I've been able to confidently continue the strength training on my own, feel great, and started sharing the workouts with my wife. I wish I had invested money in a personal trainer years ago.

I am a 71 yo female and was told by my medical provider to join a gym and start lifting weights. I did not know anything about using the equipment so hired an amazing professional trainer, Rachel Beverly. Initially, I was very nervous and intimidated about using the equipment but Rachel quickly put me at ease. She is an excellent teacher and both explains how to use the equipment safely while making it super fun. Rachel gently pushed me to increase the weights and I was amazed at how much weight I was able to do. After working with Rachel, I am now able to use the equipment confidently on my own. I wish I had started going to the gym sooner…but it’s never too late!

I have hired a number of trainers over the years, and I can say without hesitation, Jessica Hanshaw is the best trainer I've had. I work at a sitting job and my body had developed some big weaknesses. Through working with Jessica over the past few months, I feel much stronger from heel to head. I have definitely turned a corner where I am starting to feel in good shape after many years. She kept me at my edge in terms of the weights I was lifting, where I could finish most sets, but felt I was working for them too. She paid close attention to correcting my form during sessions. When we started she created a personalized set of workouts for me, which I found meticulous and attended to my needs. I told her I specifically wanted to be able to run again without getting injured, so she tailored a workout plan with that in mind. I feel so much stronger running now. She has me starting slowly and building up with regard to running, so my body will acclimate to the stresses. This has been the best money I have spent on myself in the last 10 years. Working with Jessica has been an absolute game changer for me.

I am not the sort of person who enjoys exercise one bit but I knew it was finally time to take control of my fitness and lock in. I wanted to invest in personal training so I could be motivated by a coach who could take into account my physical limitations and where I was coming from with barely any exercise experience. I am so lucky I found Coach Hanshaw and my trainer JP because my attitude toward exercise and fitness have turned around completely!
I opted to do group personal training with three of my best friends. The group accountability and encouragement from JP helped keep me on track every week. JP created a fun and engaging program for us that was accessible yet challenging. It’s so motivating to see your improvement from the first week to the last! Thanks to JP I have been able to incorporate fitness into my life and routine and I feel healthier, stronger, and more confident for it. I can’t recommend personal training with Coach Hanshaw enough!

I had a great experience with Coach Hanshaw Personal Training (CHPT). This was my first time joining a personal training program, and from the beginning, Coach Hanshaw made the onboarding process smooth and personalized. She took the time to learn about my health issues, comfort level with exercising, goals for the training and paired me with Coach Kenley B. based on both my availability and fitness objectives.
Coach Kenley was amazing throughout the training sessions—super supportive, knowledgeable, and motivating. Our main goals were to learn how to properly use gym equipment, build a foundation in strength training, and determine appropriate weights. By the end of the program, I felt confident and equipped with the skills I needed to continue training on my own.
Both Coach Hanshaw and Coach Kenley made the entire experience enjoyable and rewarding. I’m already planning to return for another round in the winter to stay active and healthy during the cold Ithaca months. Highly recommend CHPT for anyone looking for personalized, effective, and encouraging fitness training!

Extraordinary!! I have been working with Coach Hanshaw for a couple of months as well as some of her training staff, Kenley and JP. They are all really lovely people, extremely knowledgeable about fitness and health and very encouraging. I have worked with other trainers in the past that I got mediocre results from, but Coach Hanshaw and staff have helped me get the results that I was looking for. They make sure you are doing the exercises correctly and are always encouraging you to improve your workouts.
I also appreciate that I can ask them for advice on workouts that I can do on my own as well as nutritional suggestions. They really set you up for success. I would highly recommend them, but be prepared to work hard!

I’m a woman in my 60’s who really struggles to get exercise. I don’t like it, and am easily discouraged. I asked Coach Hanshaw to take me as a client, and I’m amazed at what a change she’s helped me make. I work with her twice a week, with a customized routine that I can do on my own at the gym an additional 1-2x a week. Jessica is a fantastic trainer. I worked with her for 24 sessions and just completed my first week in the gym on my own, feeling both prepared and motivated to continue with my lifting program moving forward. In addition to being incredibly knowledgable and willing to answer all my questions, I appreciated that Jessica pushed me when I needed it but also listened without judgment when I requested to modify or change something based on previous injuries/issues. In 2022 I was bedridden from Covid for a month. Even though I am very fit and active I knew I wanted to level up my fitness-self-care. I was looking for accountability to get my strength back in the midst of my busy schedule. Jess has been exceptional from the start. Not only am I back to my previous strength level, I'm stronger. My 15 year old daughter worked with Jessica for 24 sessions, she says she really enjoyed working with Jessica and she really helped her feel comfortable in the gym. Not only did Jessica help her establish good form and knowledge on how to work different muscles but she helped build good exercise habits! Recently, I had the privilege of working with Coach Jessica Hanshaw. Although I had already been going to a gym regularly, I felt like I needed to step up my game and work with a trainer if I was going to continue making progress. Jessica was recommended highly, so I signed up for 12 sessions over 6 weeks. This was a great decision! Jessica came up with 2 complementary workouts for me to alternate for strength building and made sure I knew how to perform the exercises properly and with good form. When our 12 sessions were done, I came away with the workout sheets to continue with, and realized that I had made amazing progress during our training sessions. I sought out Jessica Hanshaw for a very specific strength goal. She was on time, well prepared and coached me through a tough routine. She discussed how to build strength vs toning only, demonstrated proper form for each exercise, and then had me perform the movement.

Cant say enough good things about CHPT and specifically working with Rachel. I'm typically active but had never worked out in a gym setting and had been out of a routine after having kids. Rachel is so knowledgeable but also makes everything very approachable. She's very good at both making you feel comfortable but also pushing you to do your best. Coach Hanshaw is an amazing coach! She createed personalized workouts for me based on what I wanted to accomplish and helped with any concerns or worries I had. I participated in her online training program and it worked out extremely well. If I could give more stars I would! Jessica has not only given me confidence in the gym, but also my personal life. After years of inactivity and weight gain (and a move to Ithaca), I found Coach Hanshaw. I read the many wonderful testimonials from clients and reached out. We discussed my aversion to gyms and she took my anxiety to heart. We train twice a week at my home where she’s worked hard to make my workouts both beneficial and challenging. For six months, we've been building a foundation of strength and good form, and I now feel stronger than I have in a long time. My training experience with CHPT has been outstanding, marked by both discipline and a good sense of humor. Jessica has guided me in my workouts for the past three months, and even though we've only been meeting twice a week, I couldn't be more impressed with the results. She tailored workout programs that were both realistic to my goals and challenging. Financial expectations were unclear and frustrating with CHPT, which I experienced during small group training. There are MUCH cheaper trainers out there that can provide the SAME level of quality. Highly recommend Infinity Ithaca personal training or YMCA personal trainers ($45 per hour).

Edit: I'm unsure why Jessica's response claims these are false or exaggerated. This is a nuanced review. There is email documentation for each point. I can forward emails to anyone who reaches out to me.
Let me start with great things: Jessica really knows exercise and muscle building! She knows form, variations of exercises, is adaptable to various environments (ie, working out at home vs YMCA's machines vs The Gym). She can get people to the next level.
What was difficult for me is that the relationship came with a lot of financial surprises that had undertones of "you're not paying me enough" and her job is "an incredible amount of work" (direct quote from email) - even while I was paying the amount that she had originally told me to pay during our first phone conversation. I went with online training + 1 in-person session for every 6-week program just to make sure I was getting the form correct. Perhaps it was simply an unclear first phone conversation when the financial commitment was explained, and I felt like I forgave multiple mistakes. But I drew the line when many mistakes became a pattern that made me believe a productive relationship wouldn't work out long-term. Here are a few specifics:
1. I was told over the phone that in-person training was $80/hour. I was later asked to pay $85/hour - this first mistake was easily corrected after some back-and-forth.
2. I was asked to Venmo money to Jessica, but wasn't told that Jessica's Venmo email is different than her regular business email. I had to Venmo the money twice, and Venmo held one of the payments in limbo for 1 month which was eventually returned.
3. When I and another person wanted to train together during the same session (we'd incorrectly assumed that the $80/hour rate would apply, and it would actually help Jessica by saving her time, since we'd be both done together), she explained that we'd need to pay $80/hour per person. On top of that, because there were two of us, it would take us more than an hour, and we were asked to pay even more on top of $160. I felt bummed that our striving to consolidate would cost us even more than if we'd gone separately while also doubling Jessica's rate.
4. I understood during the first phone conversation that it would be a 3-month online training commitment (so I needed to pay $150/month for 3 months up-front) and then a month-to-month commitment after that until cancellation. This ended up being a miscommunication since the 3-month commitment is the general minimum.
5. The overall structure of online training versus the 6-week program cadence is confusing. A 3-month subscription pays for two 6-week programs plus some time left over to begin a 3rd program. It took me at least 10 back-and-forth emails with Jessica to explain this, since she originally told me in email to just recycle the 1st 6-week program if I was planning to end the 3-month subscription. This was puzzling because I was trying to follow the rules of both the 3-month subscription and the 6-week programs (and at one point, she did mention that for some clients, she designs 4 or 5-week programs, so for them she makes additional programs anyway. In addition, she was only designing 2 days/week programs for me, not 3 days/week as is typical for most clients). I felt like I was asking for what I paid for, with concessions already built in, and getting pushback. This was eventually resolved by Jessica surprisingly stating that the 3-month subscription was up on December 5th when it began September 13th (date of payment for 3-month online subscription), and she would not be providing a 3rd program that was under the original contract.
And just to give a financial picture, for a whole year of online training + one 1-hour in-person session every 6 weeks, that works out to ~$2.5K/year!! Enormous $$ for not enough value!!
Overall, I was hoping at this level of financial investment, I'd have a trainer that was personally invested in my success. Unfortunately a 5-star experience is out of reach for this budget level.

Coach Hanshaw helped me get my life back on track. I was in a car accident in April 2021, left me pretty banged up. With a fractured right ankle, fractured left wrist, and broken ribs, I was unable to walk for 4 months. I lost all my muscles in both affects limbs and other parts of my body as side effects to not being able to walk for so long. Slowly completed physical therapy for 44 weeks and it just wasn’t enough. I was walking again and slowly gaining mobility but I was severely weak and going no where fast. That’s when I decided to take control over my future and push myself, the choice was easy and I called Jessica. I signed up for the 1x1 personal training for 48 sessions. Best decision ever made. First week I knew I made the right choice, Jessica custom designed a program that met my specific needs and accounted for my disabilities. She pushed me and got me back on track to my normal life. Not only is my mobility improving but I’m getting strong and loosing weight. Jessica has changed my program three times now with my progression. The attentiveness and consistency is outstanding, Coach Hanshaw has taken personal training to a personal level. She’s you’re number one cheerleader and most caring teacher. I took a "Tune Up" class with Coach Hanshaw to understand and fix/correct my form especially when it came to leg day exercises (squats, deadlifts, etc.). First of all, Coach Hanshaw is extremely personable and knowledgeable. She actually teaches you the logic/science behind the exercise, modeling it first and giving you the opportunity to mirror the exercise. I was nervous about the heavy weight but she positively encourages and pushes you more than you think you can do. I found out I was way stronger than I thought. I was looking for someone to prepared me for the ACFT (Army Combat Fitnesses Test) since this a new change in the Army, is more challenging but more combat ready. I loved how she made a thorough plan building up to that end goal. She also explained the reason for different types of exercise and how each plan will helped me in the end.
She kept me motivated even when I was not feeling enthusiastic. I always been super shy and very introvert around gym’s and in general, I expressed that to her and she work with me to be more confident and secure about myself. Thus, she helped me not only on building up to my goal of passing the ACFT but she also helped on my mental well-being as well. I’ll be forever grateful for getting to know her.

Supremely professional and knowledgeable personal training instructor. Coach Hanshaw impressed me right off the bat with her no nonsense approach to her profession. Extremely organized and fastidious with her attention to detail, coach broke me in easy at the start of my 48 sessions with her. She then proceeded to meticulously sculpt my program over the course of nearly 5 months, gradually increasing the weights and intensities of each workout as I got into better fitness. She restructured my program every 6 weeks, replacing old exercises with new ones and in this manner kept the workouts fresh while I also learned how to use most of the equipment available in the gym. Coach’s style is not the drill sergeant type. She is positive in her instruction and makes corrections with my form when she sees a flaw. I loved this workout program it was really easy to follow, and easy to communicate any questions/problems through the comments on the google document. I already see such a change after just a short amount of time, a progressive overload program is definitely the way to go. Jess was extremely helpful/great to work with she explained to me what progressive overload means, along with a “newbie” packet because I’m new to weight training. It had a lot of information on how to start working out along with breathing tips. I have had a jumpers knee in the past and it started to flare up while I was working out and Jess really helped me know how to take it easy and strengthen my knee so I could still workout but avoid pain and injuring it further. She helped me know when to start increasing weight and walked me through each workout and helped with my form as well. I work in the medical field and I am always worried about being pushed into doing exercises that could leave me injured and affect my ability to work, which has been my experience up until now. I wanted an exercise program that I could do in my own home.
