Definitely a strange experience. I love visiting new places in my travels for work and never have I felt unwelcome when visiting a CrossFit box like I did here. There are much better CrossFit communities elsewhere in NYC. If I had not said hello walking in, nobody would’ve spoken to me. Well actually towards the end, the coach did stop by to question what I was doing. Unfamiliar movement for me which he didn’t explain well…I will not be back.

This is a great CrossFit box in nomad/flat iron really easy online to book a class. The class I took today was really good. It was high level, but I really enjoyed it. Definitely a good place when you’re visiting this area.

Such an awesome CrossFit box right in the middle of busy New York City! CrossFit NYC is absolutely an amazing place.
As a CrossFitter visiting from Korea, I just stopped by for a short visit — but everyone was super welcoming and kind enough to show me around. Really loved the vibe, the energy, and the community here.
Hope to drop in for a workout next time I’m in New York. Definitely a place I’d love to come back to!

Ella is a great coach. She made sure to learn everyone's name and she provided encouragement and helpful tips along the way.

Excellent facility as expected for the location. Lockers and bathrooms were clean and very comfortable. A lot more amenities that your typical Box but I loved the change of pace. I came in for an instructor guided HYROX class that kicked my butt. Community was very inviting and owner was nice enough to allow me to take the following class because I was late, which is not a curtesy offered much anymore. Overall great experience.

I had a terrible experience here and would not recommend. Despite arriving slightly late due to someone being struck by the train (i even provided documentation of the incident), something completely outside of my control they did not make any efforts to accommodate. Not the best customer service and this was my first time trying them out. Dont think I would be returning

I am new to CrossFit and have been training here for about 5 months. The gym is large and well equipped. The coaches are pretty nice and help me pick up new movements, and refine my movements. Members welcome new joiners and are encouraging. I feel I learn something new and become fitter every session.

CrossFit NY Flatiron has an incredible set of coaches who are ready to help any athlete at any level adapt to the programming and avoid injuries. I was particularly impressed by their ability to suggest scaling options for challenging movements. The gym itself is really well equipped, has immaculately maintained washrooms and provides excellent value for money. 10/10 would recommend trying a membership.

I signed up for the on-ramp after visiting CrossFitNYC to meet the staff and observe a class in progress. The style of exercise was new to me, and more than a little intimidating, but the participants were having serious fun and the instructors were attentive and very professional. During my on-ramp one-on-one sessions, and classes, I met several coaches and each one asked about my experience and goals, listened to me, offered just the right level of challenge along with encouragement. The other participants were friendly and supportive. The intimidation melted away quickly and I learned a lot more than I expected in a few short weeks!

It is an unwelcoming box! I have had the oportunity to travel and visit CrossFit boxes All over the world, and this is the first box that doesnt allow one day drop ins. I belive is part of the CrossFit comunity to travel, share and meet new athletes, I went to the 50th street location and they didnt allow me to train for a single day, their policy is only a minimum of 3 days for $100 and I was en NY only for today.

I had a fantastic drop in experience and CrossFit NYC on 28th street. The coaching was spot on (which can be tough for snatch drills), the facility was spotless with new equipment, and the members were welcoming. I even ran into a friend from high school I hadn’t seen in a while. If you’re in that neighborhood and looking for a gym to drop in at, I recommend this one.

I'd like to have visited but was put off by the description shared by the owner in google maps. Why don't you accept guests, visitors, or drop-ins? It feels a bit against the spirit of the community... If it's a mistake maybe you should update google maps.

Good box with great boxes.
I only have it 4 stars instead of 5 because of their somewhat draconian drop-in policy that forces you to buy 3 workouts for 99$ even if you're in town for a few days.

Community, Community, Community. I just love coming into the 6am daily, surrounded by the same crew, all positive-minded, and ready to crush the workouts together.
For me, I'm working from home through the week and this morning workout is how I enjoy a little morning socialization before I return to my cubical errr... apartment. Wait it's NYC... they are sort of the same thing here aren't there. LOL!
If you're looking for a friendly place to Crossfit, this is it. Also, I really enjoy that, at least in the 6am class, there's not a lot of that RAH RAH in your face chanting and cheering when you're the last one finishing a workout. I always found that sort of extra attention on me at the hardest part of the workout to be a little uncomfortable and intimidating. That sort of stuff really doesn't happen here and I like the gym culture here even more for that weird little reason.
Instructors stick to their schedules so you can find a routine and instructor set that works for you and feel confident you'll see the same people regularly. The gym is also "boxed" off with sections for each person. If you arrive a few minutes early to class, you can almost guarantee you will have the same area to workout in daily. It might seem like a nuance but for people like me that enjoy very consistent processes, these sort of little things add up to make daily Crossfit a harmonious activity.
Hope to see you here!

Before I join crossFit NYC, I wanted something challenging, I remember mentioning to the coach that I get bored very easily if I’m not being challenge. He started “ you will not get bored”. I signed up, and I can tell you, it’s one of the best investments I’ve done so far… for the first few weeks I felt stupid because I wasn’t used to the movements or the workout , but the coaches they were there to help me. The coaches are very knowledgeable and friendly. They will give you feedback on what you need to improve on. It’s my first time doing CrossFit and I am very happy that I choose CrossFit NYC.

I had a bad experience signing up but the staff were quick to make it right. I’m now in my third week and think I have enough info to leave a review.
The space is big, roomy, and nicely equipped. The gym runs like a machine and you always know the workouts ahead of time etc. there are frequent classes and the hours are good.
The required personal training sessions are good for someone new to CrossFit so that’s nice. The classes are doable for beginners but I have to say, it’s coach dependent.
Some of the coaches (brian, ben, Nelson!) are amazing. They’re kind, approachable, generous with knowledge, and know how to make the class enjoyable for all levels.
The other coaches I’ve found less helpful. I won’t call them out here by name because I am still an active member and don’t want the experience to get worse. In general, some of the coaches are not as kind to new comers. They are not proactive, don’t demonstrate the exercises, seem impatient or annoyed with beginners, and make scaling the exercises difficult and tedious. They just wander off during class, don’t check in, spend more time with the advanced members, etc. one of the coaches I found outright contrary and almost combative as I tried to understand the workout.
So my advice is, definitely come, find the coaches you like, and stick with them to have a good experience.
Buy your own Jump rope too, the ones they have there are funky.

Nul 😞

Dropped in here for a week while in town for work and am super happy to have found a home-away-from-home gym as I'm in the city about once a quarter for work. The coaching staff is very friendly and knowledgable and every member is super pleasant and welcoming to drop-ins. I've tried another CF gym near Midtown and had a very poor experience so I was very relieved to find a community that is welcoming. I ended up buying a one-week membership which is a great deal for folks looking at multiple days of drop-ins. The communication with staff on membership sign-up was timely and the website is easy to use to register for classes. Looking forward to coming back next time!

Gym is ok and was pretty dirty and not well kept. Coach (Sarah) I think was sarcastic, condescending and annoyed she had to be there. During the workout while she's supposed to be instructing "I'm trying to eat my prosciutto" to the other coach after berating him for not helping enough.
I would never go back here ever!

Very big crossfit space. The trainers are great! Multiple floors and different levels of crossfit people can train at the same time. The bad? They have a policy that where they charge you for putting your membership on hold when on vacation. This is a terrible policy.
Update: July 2018. They closed the second level so now the space is entirely on one floor. It is very congested. You spend a lot of time trying not to bump into ppl while trying to do your workout. They also increased the membership rates.

Are you accident prone?
Because if so this gym is not the right one for you
Because if you get injured here they don't give a ---- about you.
I broke my toe here in December of last year
I dropped a 5 lb weight from a squatting press bar onto my big toe.
It shattered my toe bone into 4 pieces and caused bleeding for 2 days.
Did they follow up to check on me?
Despite my gushing tons of blood out of my toe while it swelled up to double its normal size?
No.
While the front dek rep broke out the medical kit (he was really nice, no fault against him, but it seems that this gym doesn't train its employees on how to treat people dropping weights on themselves) when I told him about my injury, he gasped when he saw my toe and said he had never seen anything like it before.
No instruction was given to me to go to urgent care.
No one called later that day, or the next, or the next week, to see how I was doing.
I had to reach out to management to tell them about my injury.
Their response was to offer me a month extension on my membership, despite our being a very serious break of my toe into 4 pieces
Which I'm still not 100% healed from.
They care not at all about you.
You're anonymous.
You're dollar signs in their bank.
And if you get injured, you're tossed.
Is this the kind of gym you want to support?

Did a 6 month run here a few years, and am now back for about 3 mos. The gym has evolved quite a bit, with a nice variety of programming that isn't all based around heavy weight. Would love a bit more individual instruction, but most of the coaches have a few good tips each session. Also, the Active Recovery class is a hidden gem....really helps not only recovery, but as prep for getting more out of the complex lifts.

Of the CrossFit locations in the city, CrossFit NYC (Black Box) is one of the most fundamentally sound and nerdy about the discipline. The schedule and amount of classes is massive. There are beginner, experienced, endurance, competition and olympic weightlifting classes. It's one of the few places that put an emphasis on rest and recovery as much as they put on strength and intensity.
I've met some of my favorite coaches here. It's an incredibly safe space for people to try out CrossFit.

I've been going to CFNYC for a little over a year and it was my first crossfit experience. I'm sure everyone has specific things that they're looking for in a gym and this one checks off all my boxes. My schedule is unpredictable and I appreciate the frequent classes that start early in the morning and run until the latest class at 830 pm. It lets me get my work out in even if I get out late!
I've appreciated the coaching from everyone and love to pick up new pointers when I don't go to my regulars. The equipment is nice, though it does seem that there's a bit less variety in exercises than some other places I've dropped in. Not a bad thing though because it is certainly still plenty unpredictable, and as always it's nice to have some consistency so you can see those gainz. I do think they do fewer long metcons than some other places, but if that's your jam there's always endurance.
I love the community here too and even though it is a huge box, I feel that when you go enough you find your people and get to know everyone well. I look forward to going every chance I get and would recommend it to anyone, especially those who need the convenience of frequent classes. Not a small intimate place, so if that's important to you probably best to go elsewhere. Pricing is reasonable, especially if you can commit to the 6 months or year. Overall really like the gym and would encourage anyone to come check it out!

I've been doing Crossfit for a little over 2 years and the more I do it the more I love it. Of course Crossfit is a great concept and workout in and of itself, but definitely also a big part of my passion for the workout is the gym I do it in. Crossfit NYC is a great box, it's spacious, clean and has an edge all at a the same time. They have the ability to run many classes per day, so you are always able to get to class and the classes are small, allowing the coaches to be more hands on. A lot of work clearly goes into the programming of classes and for anyone who's intimidated by the process, they have specific skills classes such as Olympic Weightlifting and often run "how-to" classes where things are explained clearly and thoroughly. Everyone that works there is truly wonderful, from the people at the front desk, Amber, Sabrina etc to all the Coaches.
Every Coach I have taken class from has been extremely professional, knowledgeable and ready to answer any question. They all seem to have eyes in the back of their heads... there isn't a workout that goes by that I don't hear Coach Brian or Coach Avery telling me whether I'm doing something correctly or not, and of course I live for my Coach to say "good job". The community is great, and for someone who's quite a bit older than most people at the gym, I've never felt like I wasn't part of the gang...
I'd say that even after over two years, going to Crossfit NYC is still one of my favorite parts of the day.
This is a great gym if you are a long-time crossfitter or if you are just starting. If you are still thinking about it, go to one of their free intro classes, I did and never looked back.

Granted I was only here once on a weekend so I would defiintely give this place another shot. Let me start first by saying the facilities are great, with a ton of space and up to date equipment, a welcome sight in the city. The coaching was a little sub par which seemed like s 24 hr fitness trainer took a crossfit Level 1 training course and then was immediately hired but Cfit NYC. We paid a $25 dollar drop in fee which was to be expected and then bought 2 shirts totalling $75 for the drop in. I was staying at the Midtwon Hilton but my friend that lives uptown recommended the gym so i decided to try it despite the hotel gym being available. I called again to see if they would waive the drop in fee and they would not; I get it, its NYC, its expensive but considering i was going to spend $100 for 2 days I might as well have bought the $200 membership. This gym is what i hope crossfit never turns out to be; a gym where they essentially just herd cattle through without the community, (just another globo gym). Granted i only dropped in so i will give this place another try next time i am in town. The facility itself had great bathrooms, rigs, bars, and equipment, i just expected a bit more welcoming and relaxed atmoshphere. My friend uptown loves it so i encourage anyone to try it .

I have been doing Crossfit since January 2014. I was scared, anxious, worried. I read all the reviews, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have to say, I have been very pleased and impressed with my experience. 6+lbs lighter, I am more confident (with some usual anxieties that arise, but that is more my personality), pushing myself in ways that used to scare me. And an important word about that, the concept of SCALING DOWN. Where I see people getting hurt is when they compare themselves with others in the box who are working at heavier weights. That was me. The coaches are great at encouraging you to listen to your body, check your ego at the door, and do what you can, not what you think you should be doing. The coaches are great (Michael, Nick, Josh, Kate, Sully are a few I have worked with). The community is great as well. Sign up!

Crossfit NYC: The Black Box is a great Crossfit gym for those who are beginners and/or intermediate CrossFitters.
I did Crossfit for two months in a gym where people of all levels were jumbled together. There were some advantages to that, but CrossFit NYC divides the classes into beginners, all levels, and experienced. This allows you to train with people who are at your skill level, which I think is great for those who are just starting or want to learn more about CrossFit.
I think both the warm ups and the WODs could be more challenging, but I think CrossFit NYC really tries to make sure you get a great workout without serious injury, which I think is a definite plus. They make sure your form is good, and the trainers are very willing to help you with moves you may have a difficult time with.
Overall, I give CrossFit NYC four stars because I think the facilities are clean and great, and the trainers are really good in ensuring that your form is good. They always place form over strength. However, I don't give it the perfect five because I do think they can push a little bit more with the warm ups and the WODs, particularly the ones for beginners and all levels.

Ive been going to CrossFit NYC for 3 months and absolutely love it. There are a ton of classes throughout the day with multiple starts time. Classes tend to get full around peak times but if you place yourself on the wait list, you are more than likely to get a spot.
Coaches are amazing. I have taken classes with different coaches and they are all great. I recommend Joe, Brian, Chris and Kevin. All are great and bring something different to the class experience.
The main location is on 28th street. There are multiple floors with plenty of space an equipment. There is another location on the UWS that is awesome. Its in the basement with new equipment. Last time i was there it was getting renovated but still looked great.
Overall its a great BOX with a lot of experienced coaches and great people. You are certain to make new friends.

I got introduced to CrossFit NYC from a friend who has been going there for over a year. He mentioned how great the gym is. I finally gave in and gave it a shot. I have been a member for a month now. I enjoy coming here and look forward to the WOD everyday.

I've been to a lot of crossfit gyms across the country. This one has a lot of room for improvement. I was really disappointed in my coach. People can get hurt doing the workouts and the coaches here that I've worked with have little to no interest in correct form, preventing injury and making you better. They also don't always WOD, they tend to do "strength" classes. Strength is fine but I would like more coach attention on strength days.

My first encounter with CFNYC felt like a thunderbolt. It was a free introductory class that explained the CF philosophy and I IMMEDIATELY understood how it could take my training to the next level. I signed up on the spot.
That was approx 10-months ago, and since then I've been working out at CFNYC 5-6 times/week. Coincidentally, around the same time that I joined CFNYC, I also began taking part in Spartan/CMC/ToughMudder type races. I've now taken part in four of these outdoor events and the CF training program has been an instrumental part of my training and preparation for these events - the combination of olympic lifting, metabolic-conditioning, muscular strength/endurance training, mobility/flexibility, and speed work, has made a HUGE improvement to my athletic capacity - from strength, to agility, to being able to run faster, climb things faster, jump further and land safely. Things I didn't know I could do.
Thank you CFNYC, for helping me discover new things about myself.

I have been at crossfit nyc for about a year now and figured it was about time to write a review. Probably best to start from the beginning, when I first moved to the city I knew it was time to get back in shape, I had enjoyed crossfit in highschool, but had gotten away from it in college as focus shifted to weight training/rugby. I dropped in at reebok 5th ave, crossfit hells kitchen, brick and crossfit nyc, of these the only gyms i could see myself at were cfnyc and crossfit hells kitchen, as cfnyc was closer to my apartment I decided this would become my home box. My first class was with Joe and he remains one of my favorite coaches at the gym to this day.
Pros: Very friendly coaching staff (special shout out to Joe, Avery and David), cheapest crossfit gym in nyc, seems to genuinely care about community, lots of members spend time together outside of the box. The coaches have a lot of experience and are highly qualified, a wealth of information if you will. Coaches put in a ton of effort and genuinely want you to improve. Awesome structure to the open. Programming emphasizes both olympic lifting/strength training and metabolic conditioning. Oh and Stacey is awesome.
Cons: Though this is changing even since I began, it still feels like a bit of a beginner box, volume on the regular programming could be a bit higher. Open gym, or at least a post workout strength area similar to those seen at other gyms would allow for longer metcons with supervision during the scheduled class and then independent/optional strength work afterwards. It annoys me you have to pay for tape.

I'm in my sixth month with CrossFit NYC and am overall very happy.
Pros:
* CrossFit has definitely changed me for the better in many ways
* I am really happy with the quality of coaching -- my coach knows my strengths and weaknesses
* The gym has a zillion classes a day, which is convenient
Cons:
* The classes can get very crowded, which is not only a hassle, but can also mean you don't get much coaching
* You need to book multiple days in advance if you want to go right before work or after work
* The showers are ok-ish, but the women's room gets like a jungle sauna

After trying out a free intro class, I was hooked. The classes are fun, effective, and able to scale to anyone's ability. The coaches are awesome and give great instructions on the exercises and make sure you are working hard.
It's the largest Crossfit Box in the city and offers a ton of different time options for classes and by ability level. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to improve their fitness.

Been a member for about 1 year and can easily say I've never been in better shape. Lost weight, gained muscle and have never felt better. Coaches are great and the large amount of classes every day make it easy to find something that fits your schedule. I highly reccomend giving it a shot.

When I joined CrossFit NYC about 7 months ago, I was a blank slate. I never went to the gym (okay, I went 2x in my life and was overwhelmed within 30 seconds of walking in) but I was tired of feeling so weak all the time. I can definitely say that I found my home with CrossFit NYC. From the first Elements class, I LOVED my coaches and the functional movements I was learning. I really can't say enough good things about my coaches...every single coach at CrossFit NYC is so knowledgeable, so nice, and so invested in the members' progress. My coach knows how much I lift, how much I should be lifting....and for every one else he teaches as well! That's just awesome. The best part is that progress is so tangible with CrossFit NYC. I feel stronger and I'm lifting heavier...and I'm motivated to keep getting better!
