Did a drop in with my son over the summer. Great location, easy to access from Manhattan and really enjoyed the coaching and workout. Highly recommend.

Absolutely low energy instructor, you are working out on your own and it’s not my first time doing CrossFit. Also I called to ask if I can take a shower after the class. They said yes, so I rushed myself to take it until a few minutes later when the instructor started banging on the door in the middle of me blow drying my hair. I was literally rushing as possible and he was absolutely rude and angry and telling that he doesn’t care if the gym loses customers. And mind me it was 1.32pm (class ended at 1.20pm and they asked to help out cleaning after, that was about 5minutes). Either way, not only him being rude, but absolutely unprofessional during the class, like he is hating this job so much.

Reposting this with one star instead of two stars as originally rated because the owner (Hari) took down my review. Guessing he has done that with others and is inflating his star rating so keep that in mind. Original review below.

I was a member here for two months and canceled recently. Been doing Crossfit for about four years and this is a below average gym along multiple dimensions.

1. Facilities are underground and somehow, despite attempts to keep it clean, the floors are literally always dusty.

2. Coaching. Never had an experience with an aggressive/combative coach in any of the 10+ Crossfit gyms I’ve belong to over the years. CF NYC UWS became the exception to that rule. One of their coaches (Jim) was super aggressive and frankly unprofessional on multiple occasions. I saw him get visibly agitated with different members (myself included) for different things. The one I observed the most was when a member wanted to do their own warmup instead of the one he was leading (which as an experienced Crossfitter I’ll say usually was not very good) and he would get super defensive about it. Also saw him yell at a member for dropping a barbell at one point which was nuts, but I think the guy failed the rep and had to dump the bar (vs. dropping a barbell after a completed rep).

3. Final thing that’s really problematic is that there are novice Crossfitters at this gym doing Oly lifts and other complex movements INCORRECTLY with basically zero coaching during class. Someone will ABSOLUTELY get injured with the way the coaching operates in this gym … with some exceptions like Buchanan who is actually very engaged and provides feedback throughout. But this is exactly the type of thing that gives CrossFit a bad rep.

I’m not really one to write negative reviews and will usually let it lie, but for the amount of money you’ll pay to be a member here you definitely have better alternatives.

This was my regular gym for the six months I lived nearby. I think a CF gym should be evaluated on coaching, programming, community, and equipment, so you can see if this gym fits your needs based on those.

* Programming: my favorite programming of the 3 CF boxes I've been regular member of. Programming is in 6 week cycles and the newsletter discusses what the focuses are and why. Workouts are published weekly. This is a strength-focused gym. Typical WOD is 10-15 minute warmup and mobilization specific to the strength and metcon movements. A spine stabilization exercise is always included in warmup--nice! Then about 20-30 minutes for a strength section, usually a compound barbell movement of 20-40 total reps (e.g 5x5, 7x3, 10x4, even 1x20 once). Then a 10-15 minute metcon. This gym does not do long metcons, except for Hyrox. This gym also only programs running for Hyrox (and Murph of course). This gym focuses on maximizing the stimulus an athlete can do in 1 hour, no time is wasted. There is also Oly lifting and hyrox specific classes which is awesome.

* Coaching: almost all afternoon classes are coached by Buchanan, who has an extensive gymnastics and Oly lifting background. He gives the best technical coaching you will get in CrossFit anywhere. He's in my top 3 CF coaches I've ever had.

* Community: this is CFNYC UWS weakest spot and the reason for not 5 stars. There's not a whole lot of community, at least among the afternoon classes. This gym does not write everyone's scores on the whiteboard like most CF gyms do, and not a lot of cheering. After 6 months I still only new the names of the most extroverted members. Very few partner workouts, but a lot of people don't like partner workouts so that's fine. Gender split felt like 65-70% male. I never observed any toxic behavior in my time at this gym.

* Equipment: best equipment I've seen in a CF gym. Barbells are high quality Olympic style BBs, and they actually maintain the bearings so they spin. Every plate above 10# is a bumper plate. Only oddity is that chalk is BYO.

CrossFit NYC UWS is a great gym. The coaches are very friendly, knowledgeable, and careful. They challenge you to excel in a safe way. They gave me the needed support throughout my injuries, making me feel safe to recover faster and adapting the workouts in a way I could still have my fitness. The structure is great. The only downside is that, because it’s in a basement, the ceiling aren’t high enough for rope climbing, and tall people aren’t able to perform bar muscle ups. I like that the classes are 60min long, with 15min in between classes. That gives extra time for a good warm up, thoughtful strength, and a WOD. My goals are usually to loose weight, but here I keep getting stronger, which helps me loose weight when I need. The gym also has a great community and I made wonderful friends while working out. Thanks, Hari, Buchanan, Jim, Mark, Ixchel, Claire, Nelson, and Cameron for supporting my fitness journey throughout the years.

When I work in or around Central Park this is my go to fitness spot. The coaching is detailed and thoughtful. I come at lunch time and am so grateful for the clean showers and available towels! So very rare in NYC. πŸ™πŸ» Unlike other CrossFit brand gyms, the focus here is on personal progression- not class competition. Because of that the physical form is a step above most other β€˜speed above all’ CrossFit gyms. I go to a lot of facilities: I come back to this spot often.

This was my first Crossfit experience and I have to admit I was afraid. I ended up LOVING it! I went every day of the trial month. The coaches were extremely hands on, helping me to scale all the movements appropriately. I came in with a bunch of injuries, and they kept a close eye on me. The facilities are very clean, and the staff is very careful to observe COVID protocols. I never felt at-risk. CFNYC caters to a broad range of skill levels, from beginners like me to very experienced athletes. There is something for everyone. It was so gratifying to see how supportive everyone is, and it was clear that many in the gym have built real relationships. Ray, Jim and Buchanan were AMAZING. I look forward to becoming part of the family!

Immediately when you sign up for CrossFit NYC you notice the level of professionalism, care and community present at this establishment. When I first started I was new to CrossFit, but the coaches met me where I was and made sure they taught me all the movements so I could reach all my goals! I cannot stress this enough - you cannot go wrong signing up for CrossFit NYC!!!

Coming from the experience of somebody familiar with HIIT, but new to Crossfit:

Staff is incredibly nice and helpful; not only showing their amenities, but in work outs. Proper form is encouraged and enforced by trainers in the first few Fundamental classes.

While somebody with experience may impatiently find the Fundamental classes to be slow and over-the-top instruction, for somebody who has never received instruction on proper form for one reason or another, the trainers here filled many gaps in my experience.

Classes after Fundamentals are exhausting and sweaty. I'd recommend it to anybody in the area who finds the choice in HIIT type gyms lacking, CrossfitNYC UWS is a gem in the rough.

I put my experience here above the few UFC locations and small-business chains I've been to, with similar class-based HIIT options.

An exceptionally average experience.
I dropped by to join my friend. Was hoping for a fantastic experience, it ended up to be average. The class was so short, 30 minutes. The first thing the instructor talked about was letting us leave 10 minutes early. He didn’t seem to want to be there. $35 for a mediocre exercise was not worth the pay. The handsome instructor couldn’t save the class. But it was a good vindication that my other gym is a good one.

I have been a member here for over 2 years and I absolutely love it. From the booking process to the friendly and extremely knowledgeable instructors (Coach David is the man)...this place has it all. I travel a lot and frequently drop in at different boxes , and I think the programing here is second to none. The proof is in the results and I have seen a lot of those over these past 2 years. It has fundamentally changed my idea of working out - I look forward to it now - and made me much more fit in the process. I highly recommend checking it out, and for visitors, it is a must on the drop in list!

Staff was very nice and the box itself was very clean. My issue was with the programming and how slow it was. I signed up for the "Experienced WOD" hoping for more. They gave about 30min (7 sets of 3 rep squats and 10 second handstand hold with a 10 second rest in between sets) to complete a very easy workout that should have taken no more than 8 min to complete. When I finished my first WOD and asked if I can move on to the second one I was told I should wait because we should do the second one with a partner to help us count to 90. It was a simple series of WB and C2B pull-ups. There was no energy in the class and I was expecting some pacing to come from the coach but it never happened. I ended up getting frustrated and leaving before the partner workout. I am used to fast pace and energy from the coach and I was expecting a more intense class for the Experienced WOD. Again, the staff was great, location was good, but the programming was lacking.

Was a little intimidated to go to a box in NYC only being into crossfit for a couple months, but Blackbox was amazingly welcoming and all my intimidation quickly went away. From the first person I met walking into the box to the trainer to the members everyone was encouraging and helpful. Will be coming back to Blackbox next time in town maybe to their larger 28th street location.

Only gripe is $36 does not include a t-shirt or even a discount on a shirt! Where is the cross gym love!

Customer service/relations just doesn't exist here. Plain and simple.

I have to say, I was so hugely disappointed with my experience here. I've been CrossFitting for around 5 years now and have even done qualifiers for the CF Games, so I know what I'm looking for in a box and this one doesn't have a single thing that justifies me paying them for the "service" I was receiving.

I showed up at 1pm to sign up and was told that I had to wait until a certain person got back from break at 5pm. I had some work to do so I went to a coffee shop across the street and worked and came back. By the time I was actually able to sign up, because he was working out for an hour when I got back, I payed and was told that I couldn't do any class that day and would have to come back the next day. All this was after the gentleman was already brushing me off and trying to get me to just go sign up at the main location the following day. At any CF box, you can basically walk in and try an introductory class for free. This one, you pay and you still can't squeeze into a class.

Then they have you reserve classes and if you don't cancel a reservation at least an hour before, because you get held up at work or whatever, you have your account suspended for 3 days. It blew my mind that I was paying them for this. I emailed them and told them that I didn't have an introductory class since I'm an experienced CFer and wasn't informed of this "rule" when I paid them $200 to sign up or any time after. They're response was "In general, if your last concern is canceling your reservation when you can't make it, you should just cancel your membership." I couldn't believe that lack of care for me being a member and committing to pay them $2400/yr for their, basically, fitness membership.

I thought about it for a few days and once my account was not on hold I decided I couldn't justify going back and requested a prorated refund. They basically charged me as a "per week" client so my monthly membership was spent in two weeks and I'm waiting for the few dollars left on the account to be refunded.

I love CrossFit to death but when you hear people say that it's cultish and that CFers are on power trips, this is exactly what they're talking about. This gym gives CF a terrible name and I was hugely disappointed. For the same price I went across the street to Equinox and have 6 floors of training at the nicest facility in probably all of NYC, and one floor is dedicated to CrossFit. Again, same price, directly across the street.

They honestly feel like they're doing you a service by allowing you to be a member of their box. I was so let down. Fortunately I've never experienced this feeling at any of the other boxes I've been to or been a member of!
