We are the CrossFit gym that focuses on high quality instruction, small classes, exercising to avoid injury and an inclusive environment that makes CrossFit possible for people of all abilities. I’m visiting Ithaca for a wedding and did a drop in workout here with my friends. As a gym owner myself, I can tell that our coach Laura takes her job seriously and has a lot of knowledge and experience with both training and managing people of various levels. If you’re looking for a place to start training CrossFit this gym will probably do a great job.

As an international student who’s far from home, I can say this place has become my home away from home. From day one, the coaches went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and welcomed, and they continue to do so every time I walk through the door. They genuinely listen to what members need and are always open to feedback, which makes the community feel really tight-knit and supportive.

Their professionalism is top-notch: every workout is well-prepared, and the coaches are clearly knowledgeable about everything from proper movement techniques to nutrition advice. They push you to work hard and challenge yourself, but they do it with your safety and long-term health in mind. It’s encouraging to know they care about each person’s progress, making sure we push our limits without risking injury.

On top of that, it’s inspiring to see how involved they are in the local community. Whether it’s hosting charity events or organizing fundraisers, they’re always finding ways to give back. The people at CrossFit Vertical have created a positive and supportive community at the gym. There is always laughter alongside the hard workout. The instructors are really good at knowing the right and safe way to exercise. They have a keen eye to notice if your technique needs adjusting. The gym itself is gorgeous. There is a wonderful mural on the back wall that is inspiring and artistic. You feel like you can be yourself and you make friends all while getting stronger and healthier together. I have only good things to say about this CrossFit establishment and especially its owners Jana and Andy. First and foremost, the "human factor". Most of our Masters group classes, which I attend, have been taught by Jana. Jana is probably the best trainer/coach I've had throughout my experience in the fitness centers that I have attended during my adult life. Jana's comprehensive knowledge in this area, coupled with the ability to pay attention to each individual's needs and adjust/modify the exercise level and modality accordingly, is outstanding, to say it mildly. In addition, her ability to create a personal connection with each one of us and to create a bonded group/community with humor and true caring makes me feel like family, and I don't say this lightly.
John, who has also been teaching our class, is very knowledgeable and personable. And Andy, who taught us a couple of times was a true pleasure to work with both in terms of outstanding knowledge and personal care of the individuals in the group.
And last but not least, Jana and Andy's care of the CrossFit community and the community in general shows continuously in the fundraising and donation efforts to many causes locally and beyond (I experienced one of these personally). In addition, the various events in addition to the regular classes cater to the varied CrossFit community and adds to the cohesiveness of this community.
In summary, I'd recommend without hesitation for anybody at any age and physical level of fitness to join CrossFit under the leadership of Jana and Andy. Thank you Jana and Andy and your team!

I joined CrossFit Vertical after my sister had raved about how much she liked the Masters 55+ program in Rochester. It took me awhile to walk in that first time because it seemed like something that was way beyond my abilities. Over the course of many years, I've worked out at a lot of gyms.
CrossFit Vertical is the best. I really appreciate that they offer a "masters" (55 yrs and older) class and allow you to try out a class before committing to the membership. Jana has been fabulous at welcoming athletes of all sorts, sizes and backgrounds - she's great at adapting exercises to suit each athlete's needs. Also, I really appreciate that at CrossFit Vertical they make sure everyone gets to know each other (e.g., introductions, etc.) - I quickly felt that I was part of the community. And on the technical end, the coaches/trainers are knowledgeable and skilled at teaching proper form and explaining why form matters. The focus on teaching technique and ensuring the safety of each athlete is appreciated and allows athletes to advance quickly and without injuries. This is a very professional CrossFit gym where you'll have fun, learn a lot and can improve your fitness quickly.

This place rocks! I was resistant to trying CrossFit for many years due to the bad rap it sometimes gets. But omg, my whole perspective has shifted since joining Vertical. I have found it to be one of the most empowering & positive fitness-related activities I've ever been a part of. It has absolutely helped me to make my personal health & fitness, and general wellness, central to me & how I structure my life.

The coaches are great about meeting you where you are at and helping you to modify exercises when needed. It's totally understandable if some of the moves in CrossFit are intimidating, they were for me too! But again, the coaches do a great job of encouraging you to try new or hard things, or helping to "scale" the options to what's most appropriate for you. It's a very inclusive & positively supportive space. Not to mention it's a ton of fun!

On the days that I have class, it's honestly the best hour of my day. And on the days I don't have class, I kind of don't know what to do with myself haha. Seriously, give it a try, you won't regret it!

I’ve been going here for the past one year and I love it! All the coaches are caring and attentive. They are supportive of each of our individual journeys and needs and encourage us to follow a pace that’s comfortable to us. I had never been to a CrossFit gym or done any lifting before, but everyone did their best to help me fit in. Highly recommend! This is my neighborhood gym and I LOVE IT. The atmosphere is welcoming, inclusive, body positive, focused, and FUN. The coaches are great at teaching fundamentals and helping everyone find and push their own personal limits in ways that feel encouraging and safe. I avoided crossfit for a long time because I was worried it would be an overly macho/militaristic vibe. Crossfit Vertical is the opposite of that. My husband and I started together a few months ago and are really loving it. We were starting from zero and we both have felt supported by each and every coach. They take the time to answer all of my (many) questions, help me learn all the Cross Fit movements, and to find scaling options that work for my body. As a longtime runner, I started Crossfit in September and attend 2-3x per week in order to gain general strength. I love the sense of community, the dedicated coaches and can now carry 50 pound bags of dogfood with ease, and have noticeable biceps for the first time. I first tried out CrossFit at CrossFit Vertical and I’m really glad this was where I started CrossFit. The coaches are all excellent. Winter is coming! And where will I be? At CrossFit Vertical -- a bright, new, cheery, supportive place to work out. Come for the community and fitness, stay for the really cool glass art everywhere.

My partner and I joined CrossFit Vertical on Day 1 and have found it to be supportive, a place for community, and top-notch instruction. They're open about welcoming everyone, every identity, and making sure that lessons can be scalable for your fitness ability. Day 1, community members came in off the street -- people of all ages. Gym members ages range from Cornell undergrads to members in their 70s/80s.

To start classes, owners Andy and Jana have you sign up for on-ramp classes to make sure you "move well to live well" -- the gym's motto. The whole group of coaches are kind, enthusiastic, and ready to instruct -- pushing when it's right, paying attention if your movement is off.

We recently moved to Ithaca, and the pandemic destroyed chances of building community. As a competitive swimmer and athlete, I am wholeheartedly in love with this place, and I look forward to learning new things and building up my health.

I'll also say this -- the owners are super aware about their impact in the community. The goal is ultimately to bring joy through movement. There are even scalable payment plans -- they want to be a fixture in Ithaca -- and I think they will be.
