Post remodel is good, but there is still a lack of usable equipment, yes it's crowded, but there are 2(two) incline benches in the free weight area. Like wut?

I just finished my training sessions with Christian, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. He was incredibly clear when explaining the exercises, always made sure I understood proper form, and tailored the sessions to my goals. Christian was also very flexible with scheduling and consistently helpful and encouraging throughout. Highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and professional trainer!

The other month I discovered this fitness center, and I gotta say, the vibe inside is pretty good. It's got a solid energy without being overwhelming, which is important for getting into a routine, why can't all gyms be like this. The layout is well thought out, making it easy to move between different workout zones without feeling cramped

I wasn’t the most motivated to get in shape, and flexibility was definitely not my strong suit. Working with Michaelangelo Villalba completely changed that. I’ve been training with him for almost three years, and in that time, he’s helped me achieve my goals.

He’s incredibly consistent, reliable, and professional. Whether it was building strength in the gym or improving my flexibility, his approach was always thoughtful and personalized. When I set out to run my first half-marathon, he adapted our training to focus on injury prevention, especially for my knees and hips. I made it through training without injury and felt well-prepared on race day, thanks to his guidance.

Michaelangelo combines a deep knowledge with a genuine investment in your progress. I’m moving away and unfortunately won’t be able to continue working with him at Crunch, but I would enthusiastically recommend him to anyone looking to improve their fitness and overall well-being.

I lost hope on personal training being beneficial to me over the years. However, once I started working with Christian Alcala at Crunch I have made the most progress with my fitness goals. He doesn’t judge and takes a developmental approach. He listens and takes care in touching base with me and designing my fitness program. That’s special and rare… and makes me grateful to have the privilege to work with him! It also doesn't hurt that he is a professional MMA fighter that incorporates my love of martial arts in our trainings too. :)

Had my jacket stolen from the coat rack. Management didn’t really seem interested in doing much to look for it, barely took down a description. No mention to other gym goers or any proactive measures to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Not sure why there is a coat rack with no cameras making sure people don’t just take stuff from it.

The recent renovation looks great, but removing both the yoga and spin rooms was a downside. There’s now very little space to stretch outside the HIIT turf area, which isn’t ideal. As a woman, I don’t feel comfortable stretching in the middle of the weight area, especially when it’s crowded.

BE WARNED!! Signed up for a free pass (awesome, clear and simple welcome email - just bring your ID, lock, towel to have a workout) but when I arrived was advised there’s a specific staff member needed to sign me in, that had not started their shift.

So I couldn’t use the free pass and had to pay a full price casual entry. A whopping $35 (plus international transaction fees to use my physical card, no contactless). This is a complete rort and customer service wasn’t very welcoming or friendly to help me. We want more people working out and being healthy, not met with rude and costly interactions. Management - please make this easy and better for your customers

Ignore all the negative construction-related reviews, this gym is great—all the equipment is new and the place was recently remodeled (which is why there was construction in the first place).

I have overlapping active memberships at New York Sports Club, Planet Fitness, and Blink Fitness and Crunch Fitness blows the competition out of the water. They have all the machines and gear that these other places have but a ton of other stuff that their competitors don't—gym rings, weight belts, a rope-pulling machine (never seen that before), a Nordic curl machine, and a bunch of other equipment pieces I don't yet know the name of because I've never encountered them before.

The staff at the front desk have been professional, polite, responsive, and competent. The atmosphere of the gym is pleasant; everyone is focused on what they're doing.

UPDATE 2/23/25: Crunch gave me a free personal training session with Marvin Martinez and it was both excellent and valuable. I've had this kind of freebie from New York Sports Club and Martinez blew that out of the water. I told him my goals (muscle up, human flag, closed-leg squat) and he gave me *a ton* of actionable training protocols and direction. I'm seriously considering booking future sessions with him and I'm someone who has trained solo for years because I spend a ton of time researching independently online about fitness and training. I was really not expecting to be impressed by a complimentary freebie teaser session based on my previous experience but Martinez made the most of the one-hour session we had to deliver the most value possible for me. Two thumbs up! 👍👍

Two weeks since somebody last mentioned this in a review, the construction apparently is still going on during gym operating hours. We need to report this to the department of health if no corrective action is taken asap.

There's construction men, in masks, actively sawing plankwood in the middle of the gym (while gym goers have no masks). The machinery is loud and there's sawdust everywhere in the air. They're also renovating the stairs.... while people are walking on and off of it?! Is this even compliant with health code?

I had a horrible workout and had to leave early.

This place is incredibly frustrating to work out at on a time crunch. All of the staff members, on the clock or not, are just standing around and socializing with the people working out. While this isn’t bad, making others take up equipment for more time so you can carry on a conversation is not cool at all and is not good for members who are patiently waiting on equipment. I waited for a squat rack today and 2/3 of the racks were occupied by members who were too busy chatting with Crunch employees, some of which were not even on the clock. I eventually had to leave after waiting an hour. I’ve noticed this for months but today was its worst by far. Bottom line: it’s not cool for me to wait on equipment because the members occupying them are being approached and chatted up by Crunch employees. Like I said, they have been doing this for months. I’m over this and looking for a new gym ASAP.

The classes are great and the instructors are inspiring. The equipment functions, but idk wish they were “new”. Overall, great place for me to workout.

I signed up for a one day trial guest pass on the website. I wanted to check out the gym, and do a class. When I showed up, the person at the front desk asked me if I've been to other crunch locations. I said yes. They said that in that case I wasn't allowed to book the class or use the guest pass.

I checked the email again and there was nothing in it about that condition. I was annoyed and they wasted my time.

The smith machine hasn’t been working for ONE month, I called before showing up to ask about it, a woman in the front desk said it was, plus the day it stopped working they asked the mechanic to fix, he couldn’t as you can see, but I went to Bowery location on that day, they didn’t have one, I called them and asked if the mechanic had finished, a guy in the front desk said: I think so. It seems like they don’t even know what they’re doing there. Besides that the trainers in this location walk around like in gangs, intimidating you to not use the machines and they take forever when they are together, and I heard that from 2 other members, so I’m not the first one to realize, and when training clients sometimes using two machines at the same time and don’t rerack the weights. One trainer once approached me saying my legs were trash, kinda kidding but yes, that’s what happened, trying to mess my self steem in order to sell his training. What a nightmare gym!

I book gym time here on ClassPass sometimes when I’m in town, which is super convenient to me. They tend to only have open spots at off-peak times, even then the gym is busy but not packed. Overall it’s a nice gym, they have all the equipment you need and it’s not nearly as busy as Crunch Bowery.

My only complaint is that members tend to leave the downstairs weight area in disarray. Most people don’t rerack their weights so it’s hard to tell if equipment is being used or not. There are also stray towels and bosu balls etc that get left everywhere. No one cleans off their equipment after use either - even the Crunch personal trainers, which is wild to me.

However you always see crunch staff cleaning the floors and mirrors so the gym is generally clean, they just need to make sure their members take better care of the space they share.

Terrible customer service and horrible management. One of the most unfriendly Crunch locations I’ve ever visited. Reception spoke with management, Steve, who was entirely unhelpful.

I just moved to New York and they do not honor the trial period if you are an existing crunch member. My membership is based out of state and I wanted to trial the signature location - but you’d think that I’d attempted to rob them with the response I got when asking for a trial.

For the cost of the signature membership, you’re better off going to other, better gyms for a similar price.

Too busy

This gym is really far too busy, and should look at either expanding and adding more machines or reducing its membership.

There have been several times over the past month alone where I have wandered in and then done an about turn and headed straight for Bowery.

If you visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening then literally EVERYTHING is full. And by EVERYTHING I mean the running machines, weight training room, cycling machines, weight machines… even down to the stretching area.

Classes are little better too - needing to be booked well in advance and usually being full to the gills upon arrival. At one yoga class I ended up falling into the person next to me we were so cramped

I don’t write reviews often but would like to warn you all of this place. Beware of aggressive trainers who will make you feel uncomfortable. They are bored and will stand around and prey upon you. They will try to sell you something or just try to make conversation. One trainer in particular would follow me around every day and tap me on the shoulder mid workout or hit me with a towel to try and get my attention. I spoke with management twice and finally decided to cancel my membership because I couldn’t stand walking in every day feeling like I needed to hide. Being harassed daily in the street in NYC is already enough and the gym should be a safe space. I decided to join a new gym that is a little over my budget and a further walk from my apartment in order to get away. At this new gym I realized that trainers are not supposed to be hunting you 24/7.

I gave Crunch fitness a one star due to hospitality. I used to be a crunch trainer a few blocks down at Astor place before the original location closed. Today I was in a rush and desperately needed to use the bathroom. I remember when I was a trainer, if you wasn't homeless or anything like that, that right there was a possible opportunity to talk membership with you or "hey here is a pass and we can have you talk to my manager about a possible membership after". But anyways despite being a previous member and knowing a previous manager there, sorry you're not a member. Well if you was good at your job mr front desk, you would know actually needed info to join crunch but I was just in a hurry to get to my class on time. And fyi if you are looking for a trainer there and they don't have a credible certification and they don't put you through a evaluation for a strength, endurance test, and watch for deficiency in your posture, body composition check...run, those are the dangerous trainers that will cause you to get hurt.

I entered the gym at 5:30pm on a Thursday and was welcomed by an intense smell of foot, sweat and humidity. This smell was so strong that my nose never adjusted and I was continuously disgusted during my entire workout.

Additionally this gym was very crowded and disorganized. Weight training equipment is shoved into any corner it fits with little regard to flow and organization. It was hard to find what I needed since many accessories were randomly scattered around the gym.

Lastly, this location suffers from poor gym etiquette with members not de-racking barbells or wiping up after themselves.

Great gym and clean facility with many amenities. I just don’t think their membership prices are worth it for what they give. It’s like a retro, nysc, blink level gym but priced like it’s equinox. Also I signed up for what should’ve been a 3 day pass but they said I was only allowed one day which didn’t really make any sense. I considered a membership here but that kind of drew a red flag for me. This gym is a shot in the dark in my opinion, tread carefully.

I’m a pretty big fan of this crunch location. As a current Gympass member, I’ve had the privilege to try all kinds of gyms around the city like equinox, lifetime, NYSC, and others. I really feel like you get your bang for your buck here.

The location is the best part about this crunch. It’s right near union square so it’s easy to get to from pretty much anywhere. It’s way more spacious inside than I expected. They have 4 squat racks and a lot of machines and tools that lifetime and equinox unfortunately lack (specifically the single leg hamstring curl machine and the foot rest for Bulgarian split squats). I wish they had more than two benches- there’s often a small wait to use them but it’s not too bad. I personally love going between 9-11pm because there’s almost no one there. During lunch time between 1-3 is also a great time to go if you’re able to.

The locker rooms and bathrooms could use a little more cleaning but overall I’m a big fan.

The manager and staffs were extremely rude and irresponsible. Although one of the staff members clearly processed my cancellation request via online and it was appreciated, in general, I would recommend you avoid this location considering its worth and other negative factors. Crunch gyms tend to attract clients in a sneaky way by featuring tons of discounts and other rewards. (BE CAREFUL NYC COLLEGE STUDENTS, DON'T GET TRICKED BY STUDENT DISCOUNTS) However, in reality, you won't feel any benefits. Especially for people seeking personal training, the gym will feature an incredible plan with a few free personal training sessions along with a discounted price if you sign up with a higher package. However, they will NEVER refund your account and do NOT allow you to pay with those discounted prices if you request for a trial. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU NEED A PERSONAL TRAINING. Multiple chin up bars, more than enough machines, large selection of dumbells and decent class offering. Good selection of protein shakes, water all around, wipes and really nice atmosphere. All that with a great price.

Membership costs increased 10% without warning or explanation. Classes are impossible to book without the all-access membership. The standard membership really isn’t worth it, for $86 you get access to mostly dated equipment and there’s pretty much only one of each machine so there’s always a wait.

Always clean, very crowded at peak hours. Wish they stocked more of the popular sizes of dumbbells and plates! They have like one set of every size incremented by five pounds instead of having more of the ones everyone is using. Also the trainers will take over tons of equipment with someone doing circuit training at peak times. But it's overall clean and has good equipment, locker rooms are well maintained, lots of benches compared to other locations.

spent a few months at this facility, when it was time for me to leave I had a lot of problems and run around to cancel my subscription, although I requested to cancel and filled out the cancellation form with an agent on the line, I was still billed for the following month and it was pressure to get my refund. still haven't received the refund!!!!! in addition I was charged a yearly fee literally a month after joining in October, it took me having to call several times before I got an email and after all that was told that they did not ever get a cancellation ..only excuse.
overpriced and horrible customer service!!
just got tired and stop inquiring about the refund.!

Really awful customer service. I was mistakenly charged twice for a day pass. I tried to call the gym directly to get one of the charges reversed. They said there was nothing they could do. Now I have to deal with my credit card company. I will never be coming back here (or any other Crunch).

Updated Review (was 5 stars): Crunch was quick to open its doors wide when restrictions were lifted. You can work out without a mask if fully vaccinated. I offered to show proof of vaccination and was told that wasn't necessary. Will be staying masked there because I'm sure some of the people who are opting not to vaccinate wouldn't hesitate to go maskless.

If you like a gym that refuses to cancel your membership, won’t respond to your emails, and will send you to collections without notice – then Crunch Gym is the place for you!

I emailed Crunch to cancel my membership on 9/3, the first day when the gym re-opened post-pandemic. On 9/10, a representative (Alexandria) responded that my account was closed and I was all good.

In November, I began receiving emails from Crunch each week that my account was past due. I forwarded these to Alexandria asking for clarification multiple times, but she never responded. I also noticed that on my account, the membership end date was 11/1 – a full two months after I requested cancellation. In December, I began receiving calls and notices from a collections agency that my account was past due.

I paid the last months’ dues upfront when I signed my contract – so how I could be delinquent, even if the rep delayed cancelling my account, is a mystery to me. I didn’t ask questions, and immediately paid to resolve the past due balance as quickly as possible.

What a disgusting way to do business – refusing to cancel, refusing to communicate, and sending folks to collections after you've refuse to communicate with them? Just to squeeze out an extra $90? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

Do not go! You are better off working out at home or running outside!

Similar to other reviews, they overcharge, do not answer emails, dodge your calls, and then send you to collections when you are trying to work through their overcharges. I don’t know why gyms are the only companies that do not honor cancellations and make you still pay full months in advance. I guess it’s to just line their pockets and send you to collections if you don’t pay for services that you didn’t even use.

I requested to cancel in September but was charged again in October. Submitted another request. Charged again in November. My monthly rate was 67.50 but I am now being charged over $170.

During the summer, my credit card had to be changed due to fraud, so Crunch continues to charge my old card and I get emails a few times a month that Crunch is trying to charge different amounts to my card. I have charges for $9, $90, and $177. I do not trust them with my credit card anymore but I will just pay them to get them off my back.

I was happy to go back once it was safe for me, but this entire experience has turned me off Crunch forever. I know gyms are hurting, but how are you going to continue charging customers for services they don't receive (haven't been to the gym since March) AND when they request cancellation. And after all that, avoid your calls and emails so they can send you to collections.

Very disappointed. Definitely avoid.

EDIT: Was told to reach out to members service after posting the review. They never replied back. They are bullies that want to seem like they address customer concerns but don't. Avoid at all costs.

I have been regularly attending this gym since last year and I recommend it to everyone I meet. It has made leaps and bounds in improvement since Anthony took over managing it. Great vibes. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Always equipment available to workout with (aka no waits for the weights) and a great way to meet other health-seeking individuals.

My Friday group fitness workout. Erik Forand delivers amazing and ever changing ab class followed by a fantastic TRX one. These are good enough that ai take them every single week, including the holidays. The 4 stars are for how the studio is set. You have light fixtures, disco balls and whatnot. Plus a giant column in the middle of the studio, creating a HUGE blind spot.
With all of this, I love my workouts, and will continue to patronize Union square Crunch.

The desk staff was pretty rude with me when I was trying to check in via class pass and marked me as missing my class when I was just late for open gym access. Pretty not happy about that part. I should have read the reviews in ClassPass because other people said the same thing! This gym is NOT for ClassPass open access folks. Also, and probably more importantly, compared to other crunch gyms this place is not up to par. Small gym, bathrooms are in weird places and other crunches near by are far better.

I’ve had Duncan as a trainer for a couple months now and I’ve seen so much progress already. He has put me on to a specific workout routine fit for my goals and has worked wonders. He is a blast to work out with and an all around great guy. I highly recommend training with him.

Duncan is an amazing trainer at Crunch gym in Union square. I haven't been to the gym in 15 years and he is supportive, patient and motivating. By listening to my complaints and encouraging me with kind words, we formed a warm professional relationship. He is very eager to help me accomplish my goals. Whenever I feel discouraged he always has a" yes you can" attitude which motivates me to keep going and never give up. he made me fall in love with becoming the best version of myself with patience. I highly recommend him

I originally came to Crunch using ClassPass gym times, but quickly became a member because of the friendly staff and amazing facility. I’ve never had a personal trainer before, but I began working with Duncan in March 2019 and he’s changed my life for the better. He truly takes interest in his clients’ lives and how the workout sessions can benefit them both physically and mentally. He makes sure his clients leave Crunch understanding what’s important about each workout and why, and how to use it to grow in the future. I’ve seen so much progress in myself I never thought was possible, and I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to train with Duncan. Crunch Union Square is a great place that feels like home - very glad to be a member!

I trained with Oscar 1-2 times per week last year and earlier this year. I had never worked out with a trainer before and doubted that the price tag would be worth it, but was quickly assured that it was a good investment. With a torn labrum and injured right knee, Oscar worked around my injuries and pushed me harder than I have been pushed when working out. We didn’t spend time on the “typical” machines — my workouts were specialized for my needs and Oscar closely monitored and corrected my movements. Highly recommend.

The facilities at the Crunch USQ are also greatly improved over the past year. The new turf area at the front is prefect for HIIT workouts.
