Started at this gym with a trainer who isn’t there anymore, so I took a brief hiatus, trying another spot or two. Returned last year and am so glad I did. Those other spots were pale in comparison. So I’m back. Where I shouldda stayed.

A large, spacious, well lit gym that is just the right amount of busy people are working out and there is a good vibe, but the machine you want is always open. There is a regular crew of personal trainers that are friendly and know each other. Penny, owner and leader, maintains a calm but focused atmosphere. The clientele is a range of abilities, so it feels welcoming to any type. I have been working out there since early pandemic when it was one group at a time, it has been nice to see the gym grow.

I am so glad I found this little gem of a fitness studio! It’s a beautiful space and the vibes are immaculate. Dylan is great at what he does — he takes the time to understand individual goals and seems genuinely enthusiastic about helping you achieve them. I find my workouts challenging without being overwhelming, and I began feeling (and even seeing!) results almost immediately. And, it feels good to support an independent, woman-owned business! 10/10

I've been training here for about 16 months with my wife. The experience has been beyond amazing. Like many, I'v had multiple gym experiences in my life, some better than others, but none have come close to the overall experience at Dakota. It is a clean, well-lit space. I have never been there when a grunter or weight dropper has been (I suspect the owner has zero tolerance for that '80s style of gym experiences!). We have worked with two trainers, both of whom are terrific. Personable, efficient, able to tailor the workouts to our needs but in different ways. In fact, the gym's entire vibe is personable, from the trainers to the other clients. This gym seems to attract nice people! As for me, since starting, I have dropped lots of pounds, but more importantly, I have seen a huge change in my body. We go twice a week and, of course, miss from time to time, but the workouts that we have been doing show unbelievable results after time. It's very incremental but a few months ago, as I passed by a mirror, I just was so happy by what I saw reflected back at me. I'm not a stand-on-the-scale person or a look-in-the-mirror everyday. That said, the results are dramatic. I just tried on a suit that I last was able to wear a few years before COVID, and I am now about a month from wearing it again! The weight loss is nice. The weight redistribution (fat to muscle) is exactly what our trainers have done for us. I recommend Dakota most enthusiastically, and I can guarantee that if anyone goes and sticks to the plan, they will get the body and strength they want.

My husband and I love Dakota Personal Training! The trainers are very experienced and know how to give you a great workout while taking any limitations into consideration. Safety is a priority. The gym is very clean and well maintained. Penny, the owner, is fantastic--so funny and welcoming. The other trainers we have met all seem very professional and knowledgable. We never get the same work out twice so it's always interesting! This is a hidden gem on the UWS!

Let me start off by saying that I viscerally dislike exercise and exertion. I enjoy exercise about as much as I imagine I would enjoy dental work by a proctologist. But if I have to exercise (and my declining and decrepit middle age body says I do), then there’s no place like Dakota personal training. A personal trainer makes sure I actually show up and distracts me from whatever form of torture I’m undergoing, the gym is well equipped and rarely crowded, and Penny is a welcoming and kind (and has patience for yours truly, which would nominate her for sainthood in at least 3 pantheons)

I highly recommend Penny Smart and the Dakota fitness studio! Over the past five months, Penny has created a weight lifting routine that is tailor made for building my muscle strength. The routine is very challenging routine but also careful to avoid any risk of injury. Penny is a top notch trainer and she also hires other great trainers to work with her. For example, Mike subbed for a couple of weeks while Penny was out of town and he also did a really great job. The fitness studio has modern, state of the art equipment. Overall, it’s a very professional & pleasant environment. You’ll love it!

Dakota Personal Training is a 5 star gym experience. The absolute best in the city. All of the trainers here are exceptional - each is highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge of fitness and nutrition. The smaller boutique size affords you as a client a much more personalized approach. The atmosphere at Dakota is consistently comfortable and welcoming, regardless of your current fitness level. Can’t recommend this gym and the personal trainers enough. I was so happy with my personal trainers when I lived in Australia and have struggled over the last 4 years to find anyone in NYC with similar experience and professionalism. I have knee and back issues and Katia (weights) & Eric (Pilates) have done a great job getting me strong without injury. The gym has a great vibe, music and equipment. Definitely worth checking out.

I love this gym. Every time I go, I feel like I am seeing old friends. The space is great - 2 floors with weights and cardio equipment on the ground floor and pilates and stretching on the lower floor. The gym is very clean, particularly the bathrooms, which is terrific when you need to run from the gym to work or a night out. Fantastic location on the Upper West Side. Also, the trainers are terrific. The owner, Penny, can recommend someone for you based on your individual goals/the type of workout you are looking for. I highly recommend Dakota Personal Training & Pilates.
