This gym markets itself as a premium fitness destination, but the reality is far from it. The sidewalk outside has been under construction for nearly three years, creating a dangerous path where slips and falls are common. Elevators frequently stall mid-ride, trapping people with no support or updates. The pool temperature excludes members with arthritis and other physical issues, and management refuses to address accessibility concerns.
Exercise machines are outdated and broken, with no effort to repair or replace them. A full-service café was promised years ago and never materialized. The ladies’ locker room is poorly maintained—broken mirrors, damaged lockers, and rude staff. Carpets are dirty, floors uneven, and overall upkeep is lacking.
For the most expensive gym in the neighborhood, this level of neglect is unacceptable. The marketing promises excellence, but members are met with indifference and unsafe conditions.

Yoga Instructor LAUREN HARRIS stopped class to insist she take my indoor sandals I used to walk into the room because the floors are cold. It’s one thing to speak to a member about a policy you insist you need to enforce, but to stop the class and state she will remove them if I don’t? Not to mention this is the oldest gym I have walked into, I can’t imagine anyone wants to walk anywhere on these old, dirty rugs and floors. For those members that pay a premium to use the all access gyms, save yourself the headache from having to use this gym. For the yogis, this isn’t the instructor for you.

Equinox could do better. These prices are astronomical, but the focus is in the wrong direction. I’ve been in pools (Hudson Yards) and hot tubs (Sports Club) where people jump straight into the water without rinsing before. Instead of training your staff to call that out, we’re training them to stop classes and touch members personal belongings?

Have been a member at Equinox for over a decade in several states. Brought a friend to the 61st location who had previously taken a tour but didn’t have time to try out the gym. The member advisor stated he could return to try out the gym. Today Dominic was rude and condescending and refused to allow him to try out the gym. They then forced me to used one of my guest passes. Dominic was extremely unprofessional and will be cancelling my membership asap.

By taking something that is actually very simple and building it up into something exclusive and inaccessible through exaggerations and mind games, equinox is a company that unfortunately hurts everybody.

Not even sure where to begin with this place. The equipment is constantly broken, especially the bikes. There’s been a “coming soon” sign on the bar for over a year, but nothing has opened. There hasn’t been an actual bar or smoothie spot here since before 2020. The basketball court is a joke: tons of dead spots, paint worn down, and one of the rims has been crooked for over a year. I mean, how hard is it to straighten out a damn rim?!

It honestly feels like nobody is running this place. No leadership, no accountability. Meanwhile, our membership fees keep going up, and the experience keeps getting worse. What exactly is the plan here? Let everything fall apart so someone else can come in and take over the building? It’s insulting to those of us who pay real money for what’s turning into a total disaster. This is unacceptable.

If you're looking to join the club bc the pickleball courts, be aware that some people here are extremely cliquy. Some people are nice and you might expect some people are mean. If you're new, you might be left with no one to play with. People would just ignore your paddles and line up after you. Not everyone is friendly and honestly it feels like greek life initiation but older people edition.

Although no longer a member, I continually recommend this location out of all the gyms in the city, which I’ve been to. I joined east 61st St years ago when it was sports club LA. Then equinox took over but the same members and the same atmosphere. The moment you walk in you feel special as it’s so beautiful, (I call it shabby chic in a good way ) with the high ceilings and the beautiful artwork. I’ve been to all the equinox locations, but this is my favorite because it’s different; much more athletic, eg basketball court, rock climbing walls, pool, treadmills galore, etc., It’s huge seven floors and a sun deck! something for everybody here no matter your fitness level, even if you just want to come sit and chat, there is no pressure here.
I recommend it All the time as it’s by far much more upscale, cleaner (Thanks to the hard-working housekeeping/maintenance staff ) than all the other gyms In the city. It has everything. To me, it’s more than a gym. It’s Family..

This is probably the worst equinox I have ever been to. The only area that is properly maintained and cleaned is the weights area. All other areas of the gym look outdated and are covered in dust. There is a spa that's been closed for years. The café is always closed. The carpeting in the upper floors is from the 1980s. The showers constantly have things left behind.(i.e. razors and cleaning products from previous occupants)
The basketball court is overrun by a high-schools basketball team practice. I reached out to management and they were fully aware about this arrangement that strictly goes against all policy with the club. There are plenty of places in NYC where a highschool basketball team can practice, a "high end" gym should not be one of them. The staff here tend to lounge around on the fitness floor in full uniform and have no regard for the members, not even a hello or a welcome. Clearly they have no interest in the company's values(with the exception of the cleaning crew) I am astonished that management is so lax at this location. Equinox has always been a staple of high quality and elegance when it came to self care and fitness. This is an internationally renowned brand and is being disgraced by poor management/staff due to lack of care and backdoor, off the books dealings. You can go to literally any other location in the world and have a much better experience than location can possibly offer. My experience at this location have genuinely been the worst I've ever recieved. The staff are more suitable for a lower end gym where occupants do not pay a premium. Do better equinox.

In my past year of being a member at this over-priced gym, I’ve 1) found chewed gym on equipment multiple times, 2) worked out next to blood splatter (which was left for an hour despite flagging it to staff), and 3) almost got injured on old/damaged equipment when the padding on the hip thrust machine detached from the base of the machine, causing my feet to slip forward. These issues are completely unacceptable considering the ridiculous cost of membership, which was recently raised despite no visible improvement in equipment or experience. Including pictures for evidence.

Ok so the gym itself could use an upgrade, no arguments there. Also wish there was more variety at 6am.

If you are in to yoga and want to up your game take Kavi Patel's Iyengar class, there you will learn how you really should be doing yoga whether you are a yoga pro or a beginner.

Also highly recommend Laeticia's Barre Class and Moniques Body Sculpt.

Unlike other equinoxes, it closes early, and the court is never kept up and is always slippery. Because of how slippery the floor was, I slipped and hurt myself. Given how well-maintained and spotless the other Equinox basketball courts are, this is unacceptable. Every member wants to stay longer, therefore this equinox needs to change their hours to accommodate their complaints.

It’s really disgusting how pretty much all the men jumping in The Jacuzzi here do it in the gym shorts with no liner or just their Briefs! and don’t shower before entering and the attendant says nothing. It’s all the menwho are playing basketball too so they come in sweaty already, so disrespectful to the women here and the people who care about hygiene And the color of the jacuzzi water after prime basketball time is so dark and murky I feel like it’s a health hazard and I’m going to notify the health department cause this in unacceptable for a gym of this magnitude and Price. Not to mention the boiler is broken and they don’t notify the memeber via email or anything. half the time and the internet never works too. Just a real disappointment

t’s really big, and I like the high ceilings, basketball courts, and rock climbing wall. The hot tub could be less green and hotter. The place really needs some TLC—it could be much cleaner. I mean, the 63rd Street location makes the 61st Street one look like a rundown subway station bathroom m.

I feel compelled to share my experience at Equinox on 61st Street, as I believe it’s important for potential members to be aware of the concerning conditions I encountered there. Despite the gym's ample space, it is in a state of neglect that raises serious health concerns.

During my visits, I noticed significant mold growth in the men’s locker room, particularly on the carpet, which is alarming. Additionally, the steam room consistently emitted an unpleasant odor, making it an uncomfortable and potentially hazardous environment. Such conditions can pose health risks that should not be overlooked.

I was a regular member for nearly three years, but as time went on, the unpleasantness of the gym became too much to bear. Since I stopped going, I’ve noticed a remarkable improvement in my health. I used to suffer from frequent urinary tract infections and ongoing sinus issues, both of which have vanished since I left the facility.

Given these observations, I genuinely believe that Equinox on 61st Street should undergo a thorough inspection to address these issues. Health and safety should always come first, and I hope this review encourages others to consider their wellbeing when choosing a gym.

This equinox has a vibe that sets it apart from the rest. It’s more down to earth and spacious. It’s a true sports club. This location is like fresh air now compared to the many sexy locations throughout the city.

This is my favorite location. If you’re looking for the classic Equinox experience, the one we pay monthly millions to enjoy, don’t come here. It looks like the back rooms and there is carpet in the locker rooms. But it’s perfect.

This is one of their old sports clubs locations that they acquired whenever ago. It was called The Vertical Club in the 80s; celebrities including Brooke Shields were members and it played a pivotal role in the 80s fitness craze that swept through the city and popular culture. I think it was an LA Fitness afterwards, and now Equinox, making it a (I think 7 story) massive mashup of different carpets and flooring, peculiar yet pleasant familiar smells that strike some cord within you, idk which, and retro nostalgia. It’s a fever dream of a place that makes me long for a time I was never a part of.

There is such an insane variety of amenities that cover all areas. Rock climbing wall, squash courts, basketball court, pickleball, rooftop, pool, 20 person jacuzzi. So much more, you could and will get lost. Weight area is massive. Quantity takes over quality here.

I come to this location specifically for yoga and the spa amenities. The yoga room is tucked away in a quiet corner on the 5th floor and is so, so big. The mats are all far apart and the lights are dim, making for a true yoga sanctuary where genuinely nothing extends beyond your mat. Lauren’s Friday 5:30pm class is of note.

The locker rooms are interesting and smell strange. The bathroom stalls are hideous. And again, the floor is carpeted. But I prefer it even to the Hudson yards locker room. The steam room is like 600 square feet and powerful. I feel like I’m floating over a geyser, it’s so lovely. Sauna is HOT and might cook someone one day. The shower stalls are spacious and the water pressure is 💋. The bathroom attendant here is so sweet and the sign in/out key log makes me feel like I’m at camp or something.
I also really appreciate that the eucalyptus towers are folded horizontally. They’re also always so cold.

Overall this is a perfect place to spend the day, relax, be left alone, and have a true me-day if that’s your jam. Men won’t bother you here either, and no one’s trying to network in the sauna.
Love love love 🙂‍↕️

I feel oddly obliged to defend this Equinox, god knows why since I pay them a fortune each month. It does not have an Equinox vibe, so if you need that to be happy, you’re going to be upset.
I love: the space to stretch and lift free weights, the roof deck, the pool (it’s a terrible pool but if it were a good pool id have to fight people for lap time) the amazing water pressure on the showers that work, the properly hot sauna and steam room, and the relatively chill vibe
I don’t love: One elevator is always broken, there are problems with the water system quasi regularly, some of the showers don’t work, and I’m fat and would like bigger towels.
I don’t care about: Basketball, squash, rock climbing, or outdated changing rooms. The changing rooms are spacious, that’s what’s important, and there’s all the same products as the other locations.
My favorite location, along with E 92nd st.

Lb for lb the best equinox in the city.

It’s absolutely massive. No luxury finishes like other locations, but there’s nothing luxurious anyway about sweating in a cramped gym next to half of New York.

This location is great for long, stress-free workouts esp on off hours. Clean and very well kept. The dry sauna is a plus too. Sad they got rid of the attendant and key system, that was a nice touch :)

This place used to be great for basketball but the courts are more and more being used as experiments for other events and the hours have not been adjusted since covid, on Fridays gym closes at 8 (used to be 10pm) which really means 730pm and so if you get out of work around 6 you basically can't use it.

Also the basketball courts are almost always disrupted with some other activity and that would be fine if the gym didn't close at 6:30PM on weekends and 9:30 weekdays. In summation if you want to play basketball without waiting 30 minutes per play and you work for a living you basically can't use these facilities on Tuesdays (League night), Wednesdays(Volleybal on one court), Thursdays(soccer on one court) and Fridays.

-10/3/2023 (Update)
Received letter saying the monthly cost will increase, it seems the covid hours will remain , long past covid.

I have been to Equinoxs all over NYC and many across the country. This location is by far the best, in my humble opinion, for multiple reasons. The first time I went, I thought it was a sports club and I got access by accident. Is the decor modern, no. But there are 7 - 8 levels and a rooftop to chillout on. Basketball, pool, jacuzzi... this club has more amenities than the sports club on the west side of Manhattan. There are 2 full cables, in addition to mini-cables, which is a plus for me. In addition, they have such a variety of modern exercise equipment I haven't seen at other locations. The locker room, showers, and steam room are throw-back from the 50s, but that's the cherry on top. I have honestly only been to this location 2 - 3 times with my year at Equinox. I wish I lived closer, and I would simply cancel my all access and go to this one. It is that big, and that varied and that good. I have never written a review about a gym before, but Google asked for my opinion, and here it is.

The people in these reviews have it all wrong--the outdated 80s/90s aesthetic of this place is a feature not a bug. Who doesn't, at least for a few hours a week, want to get in a time machine and sling iron like Patrick Bateman? Who doesn't want to yuck it up about how Japan is the future in the sauna?

I am putting 5 star review since the staff was super nice and tried to help me as much as possible. I moved to HY and tried to get executive room access which I already had it here, but the staff at HY was super rude and not helping, and they basically asked me to pay another initiation fee and more monthly pay. During the whole 5 visit no one was kind enough explain the whole situation, but here 61st staff was super nice and very kind. I still come here instead of HY even though it is 10 min walk from house. It is worth to take 30min train since it is comfortable.
The gym is super big. A little old but it is NYC, so ;) But they are constantly renovating.

Can Equinox please upgrade locker systems in this gym? Cannot believe that in 2023 you need to wait for an attendant to get the locker key which you have to carry around as you work out. I left mine in they gym by accident and I could not get my stuff. Took 10min for them to find the master key and unlock. This locations definitely falls short of the "Equinox Standard". As other reviews have noted, the club is completely dated and the facilities need some serious work. The men's locker room and sauna seem like they haven't been updated in over 20 years and aren't maintained all that well. I've reached out to management multiple times about the cleanliness of the sauna and the fact that it doesn't really get all that hot but they have been reluctant to do anything about it.

One positive is the size of the main weight lifting floor. Plenty of space with multiple racks. Staff is super friendly, but the facilities leave a lot to be desired.

From a bodybuilders perspective: believe me if I say this is the best Equinox in NYC - I worked out at all of them. Yes places like Hudson y are pretty, but if you go to the gym to actually (!) train hard, this is the place to be. No other equinox has this wide selection of great equipment (especially for leg & back). It is never cramped such as downtown gyms and the space is massive. I drive 40min up from soho to workout there. Just disregard the outdated locker rooms, the quality of workouts you get here will make up for that.

Hello,

I am an all access member. The gym I currently go to is 63rd street & Lexington Avenue. Hours have been REDUCED by 2 hours due to Omricron with out any prior notice. The club does not care about the health or safety of its members. The gym is significantly more crowded. The price is the same. I will leave terrible reviews on all social media. I reached out to Eqinox many times and the only response is that hours will be re-evaluated as membership goes up. Nothing is offered to regain a loyal paying customer.

I’m so torn with this place. Has so much more than other Equinox locations in the city (steam room AND sauna, expansive gym floor, roof “terrace”, pool, hot tub) but there is a difference between older design and woefully dated. This location is the latter. I understand that it is an enormous location with massive upkeep and renovation costs but this gym is begging to be gutted. The terrace is just an unfinished roof with chairs, bathroom/locker area is under maintained, and showers are straight out of a prison. The location/roof deck is fantastic but it’s calling out for a better gym!

I was a member here when it was originally Reebok Sports Club several years back, despite “renovations” the gym is still dated and the staff here is rude and often disrespectful. Hours are terrible and they now continue to cut-off my workouts before the gym closes. There have been 10+ times where i’m working out only to have a rude cleaning attendant literally take the equipment from my hands telling me “we’re closed” when there’s still 30 minutes till close. Front desk agents show no awareness, cleaning team is rude, and management is dismissive to concerns. Dated locker rooms with moldy carpets and water damage. At 200+ a month PLEASE do not spend your hard earned money at this joke of an establishment. There are far better places to workout where members are not treated as an afterthought.

This gym really is all that you need, and more. The facility is massive and allows for plenty of room to enjoy your workout in socially distant comfort. The staff are SO kind and accommodating and the trainers all go above and beyond (shout out to tier 2, soon to be tier 3 - Merlina Rodas 10/10). The massive weight lifting floor has multiple of almost all the machines, so you’re rarely waiting for one to open up, and the second of level cardio equipment has so many options you’ll have everything you need. Throughout the pandemic the staff here have been super transparent about what services can be open and have respected safety rules. Really grateful to all of them for showing up everyday in such public facing jobs to allow us all to get our gym fix.

This place is a joke. I can't even go into detail with all the problems at this location, but it all boils down to the manager not caring. Despite several complains about broken equipment and lack of access to amenities over the course of months, the manager--and his boss, the regional manager--simply give "apologies" with no action to enact change. Meanwhile, they charge me the full monthly dues and claim they "cannot" refund my credit card or offer any sort of compensation for my frustrations. The machines remain broken. I'm out a place to workout, and out countless hours (and babysitting fees, because someone has to watch my toddler while I go) to try to get some fitness in. By not having equipment available to me when I pay hundreds of dollars a month for it and have carved out time to go, is the ultimate slap in the face, Equinox. Do better!

I worked out here for 18 Months, enjoyed the facilities and the location. Executive locker room was clean and the staff was very friendly. People working at this gym are very helpful. The biggest problem is with the Management, as they create personal vendettas against Trainers, and create unnecessary problems for the clients. Management disrupted my workouts, and I cancelled my membership. More $$$$$ in my pocket!!!

Great gym. Plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, stair masters, spin cycles, and rowers. Enough mat workout spaces to find your private groove. The powerlifting section can get crowded during normal times, but finding equipment and planning a workout is very easy during these socially distant times. There’s also a boxing gym, indoor cycling, squash, basketball courts, pool and jacuzzi... amenities I haven’t used yet.

This gym is super outdated. Great space but equinox is not investing in it. Honestly speaking not worth super high membership fee (I have been a member since 2002). Perhaps this is why it is never busy - equipment is not much newer than NY sports club or even own blink gyms

Gym is never crowded, always clean. The stuff in the locker room super sweet. Really weird reading the comments now that I've been a member for a little while because I was looking at reviews before signing up and almost didnt go for it bc of them but after visitingdecided to give it a try. The gym is huge and has dedicated areas for boxing, yoga, weights and cardio. Wish the steam room and sauna would get hotter and there were some classes offered at day time but overall cant complain.

I recently signed up here for the new year and couldn't believe how gross the locker room is. You would think playing 180+ for a membership that the locker room would be upscale. It isn't! First of all you have to get a key to access a locker. Then you have to workout without losing your key. Such a pain. I'm sure anyone who has a gym membership, has a combination lock. Can't even utilize that here. Also, they give you a free fitness consultation and a free personal training session. Just cancel and don't bother. They really back you into a corner to pay for training sessions when you weren't even looking for training sessions. I ended up utilizing these free sessions and the trainer basically forced me into signing up for more sessions. He was legit stage 5 clinger. I told him I'm not sure what my schedule is in the future and can't commit but he didn't care. Stay away!!

This gym has great equipment, but the trainers promote a really masculine bully environment. The trainers are usually sitting on the equipment and give you dirty looks if you ask to use the equipment they are sitting on. There a dozen places in this gym to practice pull-ups, and one day I was using the cables and some guy wanted to do pull ups above me, I told him there are at least three open places for him to do a pull-up. He then jumped above me, kicked me and told me I was doing girly workouts and he was doing a man’s workout. A trainer was nearby watching the guy berate me and assault me, and when I asked for his assistance, minutes later, he told me to find someone else, he’s “in session.” The next trainer told me to let him know if he does it again. Eventually I found the manager who told me the guy said he was having a bad day and he was really apologetic. Apparently, women can be assaulted and verbally abused here, in front of trainers, without any consequence. And apparently, latin woman can’t be listening to a voicemail while on the gym floor, but men of any color can be talking on their phones throughout their workouts.

Some of the amenities here are unique but this does not really feel like an equinox. My first impression was the locker room and it's extremely dated. Carpeting in a locker room? You also have to check out a key which is uncomfortable. The tile in the bath area also looks super dated.

I have registered Equinox over 14 month a go. My contract has expired after 12 month, when I asked to terminate my membership they asked for 45 days notice and they have charged me extra month.
My cancellation was temporary since I have been busy lately and my plan was to sign back in 3-5 month.
Obviously after that I will choose a different gym.

This place is the pinnacle of gyms. It's eight stories tall with rooftop access to an amazing view. Also on the roof are lounge chairs and a cafe.

Other amenities include: basketball and squash quarts, boxing, cycling, yoga, swimming pool, hot tub, dry sauna, steam sauna, and another cafe at the ground level.

The gym also has an exceptional personal training staff. All of whom are well educated and certified.

Equinox is a step above other gyms and several steps above in price. For that price, you get access to what feels more like a spa than just a gym with great locker rooms and facilities. The locker rooms for example have tvs, hair gel, deodorant, cologne, and more. The showers also have fairly nice shampoo and other products too. The gym is nice with modern and well maintained equipment and good numbers of each type of machine so you don’t get denied. I’m just not sure all of these benefits make up for the price.

I have come here several times to take my friend's Zumba class. The facilities are gorgeous - seven floors of exercise equipment, different studios and rooms for all needs. At any given moment, you can catch a dance class, weight lifting, a boxing class, a basketball game, and take a dip in the pool. This gym feels more like a spa or country club, offering full service showers, sauna, and locker room. Every time I've been here, the experience has been positive.

Nice Gym, But for that service at that price... No.

Recently joined the gym and they made such a big deal about waving a $800.00 Initiation Fee! (Like any of us would pay $800 to join a gym) First it was $0 then when I came to sign it was $50. I walked away and got about 10 call backs asking me to use their one week free trial.

Went back 2 weeks later, no 1 week free trial but they did waive the whole $800 this time (wow right?!) and Took $30 dollars of the $180.00+ membership fee. It was a nice place so i assumed $50-60 dollars more a month then the competition would be worth it right?

Well when you pay that much to want to be at least treated with a little respect. But alas, such is not the case! Deviate in any way or need something, you will have plastic smiles spewing out policies with a condescending tone that will make your spouse sound like a shakespeare love play in comparison.

Needless to say I canceled and I had to write a review for if I even spare one of you the hell of using this gym, I will have done you a great service and my good deed for the year! :P

Happy gym hunting!

In the current/upcoming generation customer service is EVERYTHING. This gym has absolutely NO understanding of what it means to value a customer. after paying $180+ per month I would think you get treated with a little common decency, but this gym has no understanding of that. No gym in the world is worth feeling the way you are treated by the staff.
