Equinox East 74th Street has been charging my card without consent for months, despite my multiple written requests to cancel my membership. Anthony (Tony) Viera (he/him) and Kelsey McCarthy both completely failed to review my account, failed to process my cancellation, and even failed to look at the medical note already on file. Only after five emails did Tony suddenly request a new note — for June 2025 — months after my original cancellation request.

This behavior violates NY consumer protection laws, including NY GBL §349 and §622, which prohibit unauthorized billing by health clubs. Continuing to charge a member after a written cancellation request is illegal and absolutely unacceptable.

I am demanding a full refund for all charges since June 2025, as these charges were made after I clearly revoked consent.
If you're considering joining this location, be extremely careful — the staff’s negligence and Equinox’s billing practices feel misleading, unprofessional, and borderline fraudulent.

I tried the aescape massage at Equinox studio at 74th street! It was fantastic! Easily one of the better massages I’ve received! The ability to determine the pressure was awesome, music was fire, and the ambiance in the room was peaceful as hell!

Facilities are nice but trainers lack respect for people just working out and not doing personal training. I've been at squat racks they've asked me to give up and had them take steps I'd set up to use for myself. If it was once I'd say it was an isolated incident but it's happened multiple times now. Very unfortunate there isn't a lifetime on the UES

I had the honor of working with Carolyn as my very first personal trainer. She is truly inspiring — with her dedication and passion for running, she has accomplished the incredible feat of completing all six of the major world marathons. Since I was preparing to run two marathons, we trained together twice a week, and she created a program perfectly tailored to help me improve my running.

Our sessions were early in the morning, and after such intensive training with her, I already felt a great sense of accomplishment to start my day. What impressed me most was not only her expertise, but also her kindness and calm presence. Her elegance and attentiveness made every session such a positive experience.

I feel grateful to have trained with her, and I highly recommend her to anyone looking for both guidance and inspiration.

Rudest staff I’ve ever come across. Desk staff sized me up and made a clearly disgusted face as though I didn’t meet their standards to be there. No gym staff is better than their customer. Learn to treat people with respect.

If you like paying $300 to wait for every machine. They oversold way too many memberships. I'm not sure what's the premium pricing for.

Update: now it's crowded also at the lowest usage times. And machines are broken.

Update 2: leg press broken for 1 week, meanwhile membership went up $14/mo

This gym is extremely overcrowded during peak hours, making it difficult to find an available treadmill and other equipment. Additionally, the cycling room's air conditioning is not functional, which makes workouts unbearable, especially during the summer months.

Went with a friend to join a class at 74th St. Have friends who have had day passes. Petite front desk woman at 8a on Thurs was extremely short with me and told me I had to speak with membership who wouldn’t arrive until mid morning. I was kind about the misunderstanding. She probably shouldn’t be at the front desk, doesn’t know how to interact professionally with clients. I was going to rejoin at the west side location, I was a member for many years pre Covid and now this interaction makes me rethink it. Unfortunate.

If you’re looking to resume your workouts after Labor Day weekend, find somewhere else.

You’re going to work out in a hole in the ground with the AC not working at times, some other times, there is no hot water.

Overcrowded classes (and it’s not even September yet).

Also you better know how to properly do the exercises in the group classes, because none of the instructors is ever going to correct you. They come in and out, they don’t even look at you.

This is what $300 a month get you in New York City.

Would be a great gym if the AC worked. The AC is constantly broken for months on end. Management is not helpful and refuses to provide credits even when the AC is broken in 90 degree heat. As far as I am aware, the AC has never worked properly in the cycling studio. I joined this gym so I’d be motivated to go- the heat in the gym leaves me motivated to stay home. Management is dismissive and not responsive of these concerns.

The staff and the instructors are good.

The facilities, however, have constant issues. Over the last year:
- the water broiler was out for several months
- they keep having HVAC issues since at least last summer. The other day I came to the gym to see mirrors covered in sweat. Cycling room is notoriously hot.

For whatever reason the management failed to resolve those in a timely manner over and over again.

Hire good group class instructors or borrow them from your other locations! I Just moved to 74th street from the West side. The group classes cannot even compare to UWS group training. The instructors are not good the group classes are too easy. It's made for old people but 95% of the people in this gym are YOUNG crowd!! Wake up, management and do proper market research. Classes need to be a work out not a sleep hour. Dissapointed. Go and see Maddy Myers's class at Equinox Spirt club. You will know what I'm talking about. Motivation, energy, drive, strenghts! That's what equinox is!!

Also, group classes are obercrowded. This means there is a need for more of energetic and challenging athletic classes. Why are you not taking action? See screenshot - overcrowded classes, all of them. Don't join this location.

Great gym however on last Saturday between 3 to 4 pm my locker there was broken in and my credit card was taken together with about $300 . I know it was taken at the gym since I checked the security cameras at Gristedes where I shopped 15 min before I came to the gym and It showed me taking the card and putting it in my wallet and in my pocket. After the gym I went to Citarela close by where I discovered the card and cash are gone. The thief rushed and ordered at Louis Vuitton a $10,178 item which was denied as suspicious by citibank and I immediately cancelled it.
I don't recall anyone next to me at the locker who could spy on me setting the locker. My suspision is that a master key was used. The manager I spoke to said it has never happened before which I doubt. They do have cameras at the entrance to the gym but they will run an investigation when I produce a police report which I will. Anyway- be aware!

The cut and paste response from the owner is not serious. They know how to contact me. I am a member (at least for now) and I am in their data base. They should have started investigating right when I communicated with their assistant manager. It is in their interest to maintain their reputation and prevent future thefts. At this point the police has an open "grand larceny" investigation.

Equinox made a mistake a charged me an extra month. I spoke to the manager in person on 74th st Upper East Side to do a reversal. She said to me … I will do it, but she didn’t… After a couple of days I am calling her by phone and people of the front desk always give me a different excuse saying “she is in a meeting “ or she is doing bla, bla, bla. The manager never is available to speak by phone for xxxxx reasons. At the end of the day I don’t have my money back.

Members and trainers have been begging management to do something about how hot the spin room is for months and nothing has been done. It reached 80 degrees today during class which is borderline unsafe. Each class members are visibly uncomfortable and complain and the instructors apologize and are clearly worried about the risk of riders becoming unwell from the heat.

Management - please take this seriously. It’s making the classes unbearable!

The place used to be good and well maintained but recently in the past months no one cares...the steam room has the door broken now for almost 7 months and no one fixes it...the boiler in the shower is not working so u can be having a nice warm shower but suddenly it becomes super cold...Not to mention other minor details (shampoo bottles not filled, cotton swabs not available for a week now...)
Place need to be better managed.

They kicked my girlfriend out of the lobby while she was politely sitting on the couch waiting for me to use the bathroom in Equinox, after we had just finished her medical scan around the corner. They forced her onto the street in thirty degree weather. I doubt they would have confronted a homeless person, so why would they go after the girlfriend of a member? Could it have been her race? I expect better treatment in exchange for paying several hundred dollars a month for an all access membership. The front desk staff on duty 12/16/23 between 11am-12pm was remorseless and unapologetic. I will be filing a complaint with the corporate office.

WOW Management at this facility has gone down hill. They screwed up my husband's medical freeze, continued to charge his credit card and refusing to provide reimbursement. Instead they are issuing account credits even thou the medical freeze screwed up was their mistake. They kept charging his credit card even thou the account had a previous monthly credit (we just found one about this new credit on account). This doe not sound right or ethical. I have escalated the request to Senior Director, since the new manager of this facility was unprofessional (Kept waiting 24 days for a reimbursement update and she never replied back to the emails, when I tried to call her she was in "meetings" Very disappointed the level of service Equinox is providing specially when there is a serious medical injury at place , ZERO compassion or accountability for their billing mistakes.

This is the gym you've been looking to join. Want to get in shape? Join this gym. Want your partner to love you again? Join this gym. Haven't heard from one of your parents in over 10 years? Join this gym.

Between the instructors who can drive you to your goals and cleanliness of this place, I get depressed when I leave. Every tile and weight is so delicately displayed, it produces a cornucopia of aesthetics. A ballad to man's pursuit of perfection. A staccato of success that pierces into your soul, lifting you beyond the clouds, and into the arms of Icarus.

Maybe the rest of my life will be defined by the simple question - when can I go back to 74th street?

Also, has lots of towels.

The gym itself was nice, not worth the price though. Also, I ended up in the hospital for severe abdominal surgery (almost died) and ended up not being able to lift weights for the next 7 months due to complications. I called them and someone at the store and they only refunded 2 of the months even though I said I could provide a medical report from my doctor.

Also, they ignored 5 of my emails, and I had to leave 4 messages for the store manager before she finally got back to me with the denial.

Hi! I'm a big fan of Equinox and visit it almost daily.

Equinox has always been about quality and the best customer service. For that reason, it's even more disappointing to encounter such a dismissive attitude at the 74th location.

My wife, friend, and I came to the club, and I had a scheduled class. I wanted them to join me that day since I had five valid guest passes.

When we came in, in the lounge area, we tried to take a seat in the lounge area to charge a phone and decide which class my guests would attend. Right after that, an Equinox employee approached us. There was no greeting, no hi, no smile, nothing like that, just very aggressive behavior. She was mean and just gave us commands in rude form. She said that we MUST sign in. Everyone must sign in before they can stay in the hall.
I'm fine with this policy, and I signed in right after, but I'm not OK with how you treat your active and prospective customers.

Upon inquiring further, I was appalled to learn that the employee at Equinox was a sales representative.

If Kelsey McCarthy had represented Equinox when I was considering membership, I would not be a member of Equinox today.

My wife and friend left, without taking the class, as they were visibly shaken.

There's nothing we did at this location that warranted her level of disrespect towards us.

Avoid this Equinox location. Go to one with better customer service.

If I could give this 0 stars I would. I’ve been coming to this gym for over a year, and it USED to be one of my favorite workout experience of all the NYC Equinoxes. Management clearly doesn’t care about member feedback (e.g., the AC has been broken for MONTHS, classes steam up and the windows are dripping from the heat and humidity) and are not transparent when there is an issue. Additionally, they continue to increase membership prices without adding any benefit for members (see above broken AC issue). They also haven’t resumed gym hours from pre-Covid, so if you have a job where you get out late (i.e., all of corporate NYC) good luck getting in your entire workout before the gym closes.

Don’t even get me started on the locker rooms- you would think enclosed areas that have hot showers and steam rooms would have some sort of ventilation or air flow. Be prepared to begin sweating before you even begin your workout. But wait! Half the towels don’t help because they seem to be laundered with laundry softener or something and they’re covered in lint, leave white fuzz all over your clothes, and aren’t absorbent.

It’s gotten to the point where I will go to East 54 (aka the worst Equinox in NYC) to workout solely because they always have working, amazing AC.

Save your money and wait for a Lifetime Fitness to open in the UES.

I would like to say that SOFIA is THE BEST TRAINER I have ever had. She is the first trainer I've privately worked with at equinox but in general I have had private trainers at other gyms in the past. Sofia is the only trainer that actually explained to me the importance of positioning and how to do the work outs to actually feel the body parts ( MAKES A HUDE DIFFERENCE WHEN SHE CORRECTS MY STANCE TO FEEL CERTAIN BODY PARTS ACTIVATE) I am working on. she also explains to me how stretching and foam rolling benefits the muscles and helped me understand the importance of it to get me into the routine of doing it all the time....... ! when looking for a personal trainer go with Sofia! she knows her stuff! and is also very pleasant, clam and kind to work with!

Nothing too unusual about this location other than the fact that it's spread out across 5 (?) floors. Standard array of machines, clean like the others, no issues with staff, etc. (Steam room is one of my favs, I think it looks cool lol)

That said, it's not very well maintained when it comes to the actual equipment. Handles are falling apart, I thought there was brown vomit on the stretching mats but it turns out it's just worn away, sloppy paint touchups... Don't normally see things like this at Equinox.

It the bullet and rejoined Equinox. This location was appealing because of the upstairs weight and cardio area that has a lot of windows and outdoor light. So far during covid i feel safe with the limited number of people, wonder how full it will be when the gym is full again but that will be a while. This location is clean, spacious and has most everything you want. The one complaint is the elevator has been out. Aside from this being a huge ADA issue, the two weight areas are on the bottom and top floors so going back and forth between the areas during one workout is an issue. Let’s get that elevator fixed !

8/11/21- Why is this location so inept at opening the juice shop. I see it open at many other equinox locations. This location is asleep at the wheel.

One of my fav. Equinox locations. It's very spacious and has pretty much everything you will need. I like that it has two separate floors dedicated to lifting space, making it less crowded and you never really have a hard time using machines. Women's locker room is really beautiful and spacious. The layout is one of the best I have seen and I especially love the glass enclosed steam room. Very sleek. Wish there were better upkeep for minor things. Resistance bands you can sometimes find lying around but sometimes you just can't find any. Loop bands as well. Literally every diffuser cap in the women's locker room is busted. For this kind of money, these things should be replaced right away. Sometimes you can find hair ties, but not all the time. Same for shower caps.

If you're someone who just wants to lift and not talk to anyone this place is heaven. It's incredibly spacious, everything is very well maintained, and things that are broken get fixed quickly if you say something.

I feel like a lot of the negative reviews on here are regarding cancelling or putting holds on an account, or how fake the people here are. I think there's even a negative review from a guy who asked for month-to-month membership and got rejected for it, then said they should be so thankful to get paid for a membership from him. THAT guy sounds fake.

You can very easily reach out to a membership advisor for questions and they'll help you resolve any questions or concerns you have. Follow the terms of your contract and you'll be fine.

As for the fake people, you're paying $235 a month for a gym in Manhattan. Are you honestly surprised that some people here act like that?

I called many times and had to visit twice to update my account due to computer issues. I was told my account was squared up and no charges will be due until the next month. My card was charged 3 weeks sooner than they said. I had to call 4 times to speak with a manager even though they said he’d call me back. Finally spoke to the manager and he said he thinks it was a correct charge but would call me back. A week later no word. Terrible customer service and I have a 3 month old baby at home. Ok, I am about to write a review based on my experience of working out in this gym.
Things I like :
1. My personal trainer Adam , who is super people person , very friendly , caring about his clients , very knowledgeable in his job. Everytime I come in he has a big smile on his face and crazy work out routine ready for me!

I do see other personal trainers who have this dead face and act like they have the most miserable job ever . I don’t hear “: Good job! You are killing it ! Wow! Way to go! “ from anyone but my Adam.

2. I love the kiehls products in the locker rooms and steaming room as well.

3. My Pilate sessions with Emilie. If you never tried Pilate, you should . It’s a crazy work out and amazing stretch and of course Equinox has all the machines !

4. Classes. Make sure you are not only sign up for classes online or equinox app, but also ask for a monthly print out for classes that you don’t have to register , you can pick up at front desk.
Unfortunately they never mention that to me right away. Also there is a guest pass , I didn’t know about it either .

Overall clean place and juice bar is nice ! After your good work out grab protein shake and you good to go.

Now I’ll write things they may want to work on, and why I didn’t add last star to make it perfect.

1. Spa was a place that I think I would never comeback again. And my esthetician was good I think, but may be the product she used wasn’t high end or the best. You would think this is a nice spa, but my face stayed red for 3 days and more pimples appeared . After red door spa I never had this outcome from facials.

2. This gym need to add something fancy and different since people paying so much for membership and complaining here. Because so far is regular gym with classes that just have kiehls products and eucalyptus towels . There is nothing else to attract .
May be add some partnership with clothing products and offer discounts , like hey you can get 10% at lululemon if you are an equinox member or something like that.

3. Many times I would try to pass by or walk through and personal trainers blocking a way , I have to go around. There is no such a courtesy of welcoming and being nice . I don’t know if it’s a New York thing . I literally know only 3 personal trainers who smile and always friendly , others always rude and never smile or look happy, they look stock up , and that’s not really attractive . We are clients and we are paying a lot of money to join the gym and be in a better shape, coming from whatever place , either is work or other stressful environment we want to see fit people that having fun at work !
Sometimes I see people (gym members) take our equipments when I work with Adam but yet he still being so polite and compliment them on their work out .just simple manners .
I don’t know , may be give them coffee on a house or free breakfast to cheer up your employees. Because all I think of , they probably hate their job because job hates them.
I got lucky with Adam and Emilie ! And I would recommend them to all my friends and family !

While the facilities and gym experience were wonderful during my summer in the city, I have to rate this gym 1 star based on the staff and management. First, I had enough difficulty canceling my membership when I moved away, as members of the staff were unhelpful and unresponsive via email or phone. Although I was finally able to get through to someone, I was still charged a membership fee for the subsequent month. After MULTIPLE phone calls and emails to the manager, I have yet to be issued a refund, even though it has been a full month. After the substantial membership fees I paid, it is absurd that I can't get through to someone to get this issue resolved. Save yourself the trouble and go to another of the 1000 gyms on the UES.

Smug staff, fake people. Tried to join and was treated like scum because I had the audacity to ask for a month-to-month situation instead of the standard 12-month commitment (I'm a contractor and won't be in town for that long). Membership staff had no interest in acknowledging my situation or even TRYING to work with me. For $235 a month they should have been happy to sign me up considering how little I'll realistically use it. Glad I walked out with my dignity, and my wallet, intact.

This is honestly the worst equinox facility I have been to, and it's supposed to by my "home" gym. I come here about once a month, and am always disappointed. About half the lockers in the women's locker room do not work, so you have to invest about five minutes trying to find a place to secure your belongings. The shower area is always obscenely wet and is a serious safety hazard. The shower curtains, which are filthy, do not meet the bottom of the shower and so about half the running water creates this hazard. I would like to use the steam room but have slipped in this shower area, which is where the steam room is located, and do not wish to put myself in harm. The mat classes are always really crowded and instructors will actually allow people to come in after class has started, and squeeze in so there isn't even an inch between the two mats. Again, swinging arms in a pilates class or barre class with dumbbells causes a safety hazard. I have been hit with two pound dumbbells or scratched on more than one occasion. I have literally left this gym after planning to take a class, because the mildew smell of the locker room was offensive, I couldn't find a place to secure my belongings or I was worried I might get hit with a dumbbell again. I have tried working out on my own, but a trainer has followed me around on the two times I worked out on my own. His staring and following me around made me extremely uncomfortable the first time, and I completely stopped working out on my own there after he actually e-mailed me for a training session. I hate this gym. And people at the front desk always mess up my name. My name is Jennifer and it's in my account as Jennifer. If you can't pronounce it, just say welcome and don't butcher my name.

Frustrated with sales and desk help giving incorrect info creating membership headaches down the road.

Great facility, great equipment, and friendly staff and trainers. Excellent locker room facilities, including a great steam room. My wife and I have had nothing but good experiences at the spa. I have been a member of several gyms, and I highly recommend this one. No one would tell you it is cheap, but it is a great experience. I read the other reviews of this gym, and I have a feeling that far more disgruntled users are writing reviews for this gym than those who like it.

Terrible customer service. "Lost" my cancelation, charged me for a month illegally and refused to give me a refund effectively stealing about $128 from me. Not happy. Were also quite rude on the phone.

Great Equinox in NYC. Lots of equipment, well maintained and lots of natural night filling in the workout space.
