The Last Independent Gym in BK. It also happens to be the best gym in the area. Great for beginners like myself.
- Super friendly employees. The staff remembered me after going once two months before, and helped me on my first time for no fee. Genuine people, to the point where I was kinda surprised.
- It feels like a community among climbers here. No judgement, even for beginners.
- Even when itβs busy, thereβs space to climb. Lots of people just hanging out or watching the advanced climbers.
- Good prices
- right off the L train
- Workout space with treadmills, hangboards, etc.

Still the best bouldering gym in town! Really good place for everyone. Seriously, if you want to get into climbing, this is a great place; the staff and climbers are welcoming and love introducing people to climbing. Also, I've seen numerous Olympians here, getting a proper session in while traveling through.

Very cool gym. Felt very homey, everyone was friendly. Seemed like the place to be with your friends and neighbors (and dogs!). Great environment, built out of an old warehouse. Limited space, but is used well. All wall types are present, albeit finite. Multiple training boards, and good training area.

I was a member at GP81 for quite some time, and itβs where I first learned to boulder. Iβm grateful for the foundation it gave me, but my overall experience was mixed and often discouraging. Since I havenβt been a long-term member elsewhere, Iβm not sure how much of this was specific to GP81 or just bouldering culture in general.
The biggest challenge was the crowding. Weeknights can get overwhelmingly packed, sometimes it felt like a competitive scramble just to get on the wall, with everyone hovering like a cat stalking the same boulder problem all day. Some nights, it was hard enough just to find a place to stand. The locker and lounge areas were also far too small for the number of people using the gym. Changing often felt like squeezing into a rush hour subway car, I was in and out as fast as possible.
Socially, my experience fell short. I got into bouldering hoping to find community, but found it surprisingly hard to break into the local scene. Ironically, some of the friendliest people I met were out-of-towners, maybe thatβs just New York. The regular crowd tends to be part of a tight-knit clique, and unless youβre already in it, an attractive woman, or casually sending V8s, itβs easy to feel like the new kid at school, looking for a lunch table thatβs already full. This dynamic extended to the staff as well, they were friendly and helpful on the clock, but barely acknowledging me when off-duty and climbing. Theyβre not obligated to, of course, but the sharp contrast felt disingenuous and left me a bit disheartened and sad.
I did connect with a few members, but the relationships felt more surface-level than sincere. Some seemed more interested in social climbing (pun semi intended) than in forming real friendships, which added to the overall sense of disconnect.
The weightlifting area was tiny and usually overcrowded, which discouraged me from cross-training. Thatβs partly on me, but I definitely lost some general fitness during my time here. The bike rack outside also regularly hit capacity. Members frequently left bags, coats, or dog gear on the limited seating, I lost count of how often the benches were completely taken up by personal stuff.
That said, GP81 has its strengths. When itβs not packed, the vibe can be great. The music is consistently solid (I discovered a lot of great songs here) and the gym hosts fun events like jazz nights with drinks and extended climbing hours. The staff, while on duty, were kind and helpful. The problems are well set, regularly updated, and thoughtfully designed. The gym is in a great location, right next to the subway, near bars, restaurants, and good street parking. Itβs always clean, and itβs clear the owners care and continue to invest in the space.
In the end, GP81 helped me realize that bouldering just isnβt for me, an important insight in itself. Iβve decided to move on to another hobby, but Iβm still grateful for what I learned and for the few good people I met along the way.
Cheers.

Great community, great setting. Go here, get strong. Pretty sweet climbing gym with awesome staff. First off, the staff here are awesome. They gave me an awesome tour of the facility and were super friendly and helpful. They even let me pick and sweet sticker and put it up in the bathroom! They really made me feel like I was part of the crew. The facility was great too. The walls look aweosme, and all the boulder problems I tried were fun. I feel like the setting here will make me stronger without actively training. I totally suggest you stop by too!

My husband and I were hoping to find some cool climbing spots while visiting for about a week, and came across so many recommendations to check out GP81. So happy we took those recommendations seriously- ended up going back a second day because we enjoyed it so much! Setting was really neat and pretty similar to the setting we see at our home gym, and folks were super friendly. Will definitely be heading back to GP81 the next time weβre in town.

Amazing setting and fun variety of wall angles (slab, 15Β°, 45Β°, 60Β°, etc.). The gym has a high density of problems which makes up for its small space. The setting is fun, and feels like interesting resistance climbing (imminently transferable to outdoors). Many of the problems are long and they set up to V11. The facility lacks some of the traditional gym amenities (shower, cable machines, cardio equipment, barbell variations) but does have a decent selection of hangboards and climbing specific training tools. They also have a full Tensionboard 2 and a Decoy board (as of Sept 2024) as well as snacks and Frank Endo (a rare find on the east coast) Overall would highly recommend it if you like bouldering and wanna get strong.

Very local community gym.
Much smaller and less crowded than vital climbing gym that's a few blocks away. Lots of overhanging walls for advanced climbers.
For beginners, the v0 and v1 holds are fairly large and achievable routes. Even on a crowded Sunday (on a rainy day), most of the climbers were going for the more advanced v4+ routes
Attached gym area is quite small and crowded. But it has a couple squat racks

GP81 is my favorite climbing gym Iβve ever been to and Iβm so grateful to be a member here. The setting is incredible and every climb feels like something you would find outdoors. The community is amazing, full of friendly and welcoming people and sessions have such high energy. I always love the music playing (I almost never use AirPods here). Iβve noticed a lot of growth in my climbing since I started climbing regularly at GP and Iβm always excited for the work day to end so I can head to GP. Highly recommend checking GP out!

Review from an average climber (V4-5) visiting from Canada.
Staff: 5/5 - Incredibly friendly staff. They were always happy to answer any questions and were conversational.
Vibe: 5/5 - Just wow. Every other gym is crowded, noisy, and stressful. This gym was so quiet and calming! It felt that people kept their voices down to a minimum so as to not disturb other peopleβs focus. Other climbers were also friendly and not bro-y/elitist/egotistical etc (you get the gist). But, we did climb early that day (9-12) so maybe itβs different at night? Also, a plus for the community coffee there!
Facility: 5/5 - They have all the training equipment you need (multiple campus rungs and hangboards, rack setup, bands, insane pull up rig, etc). There are also multiple walls (mostly steep, overhung which are my favourite). I appreciate having the bleachers and chairs off the mats because in other gyms, there are always idiot climbers sitting on mats close to the wallβ¦
Cleanliness: 5/5 - Itβs clean, what more do you want?
Setting: 5/5 - This is my favourite part of the gym - it makes or break it for me. The setting is more traditional/outdoors style that requires hard down-pulling, which is the exactly what I prefer. Most gyms have only modern/comp style so itβs rare to find a gym that is traditional. I love climbing outdoors so this is the perfect gym to train for that during the winter. Only caveat is that there is no true slab, so if you are a huge slab fiend, there is only a small vert wall with some slab-like set climbs (fine by me lol)

Hands down the best gym for bouldering in New York. Price is competitive with other similar establishments, front desk is great, and the place is very well organized. Pretty much every member follows rules and basic etiquette, there's no fuss just climbing. There are 6 different walls with setups changed once a month, there's also an area with weights and hangboards.

How is this gym βbest ratedβ. Its over crowded, small, old holds, and zero ingenuity with wall design/angles. This looked like someone opened their garage door and made basic walls out of plywood from home depot and just turned the walls into a spray wall. So funny when gyms fail to use volumes and literally just rely on making a wall steeper instead of actually designing a wall. Laziness.

GP81 is a wonderful gym in NYC! I visited for the first time this past weekend. It is smaller, but has everything anyone would need to get strong to climb outside. The climbing community there is strong and very, very welcoming. The setting is extremely fun and sustained. Itβs more similar to outdoor climbing than other gyms. However, there were a few compy problems to keep the mostly-indoor climber satisfied. Contrary to what other people say, I donβt think grading is stiff (at least from V0-V6). I think thereβs something for everyone, even beginners!
