This was hands down one of the worst gym experiences I’ve ever had.
I came into Grindhouse to use the safety squat bar — the ONLY bar I can use safely because of an injury. When I got there, the bar had a bunch of random equipment piled under it. I asked everyone nearby if it was theirs, and they all said no. The moment I started setting up, a woman walked over claiming it was hers, and kicked me off before I even got one rep in. She then proceeded to sit there stretching for over 20 minutes before even touching the bar. When she finally did, I asked if I could work in. She said “no.” I asked how long she’d be — she said, “I don’t know, I’ll be here a long time.”
At that point, I went to the staff for help. I explained that I have an INJURY and can only use that bar. The front desk rep just stared at me blankly, walked down with me, stared again, and then asked me if I could just use another machine. I repeated, very clearly, that because of my injury I cannot use another machine. He shrugged, stared some more, and told me he’d “have to check the cameras” and “ask the manager.”
I then asked for a refund. Same story — he didn’t know what to do, said he’d have to “ask the manager.” So essentially, I was left with no equipment to use, no support from staff, and no refund.
The level of incompetence and disregard for members here is absolutely shocking. Ignoring someone who explains they have a legitimate injury and brushing them off with “use another machine” is not only unprofessional — it’s dangerous. Grindhouse clearly doesn’t care about its members’ well-being. Avoid this place at all costs.

A+ gym. Very big, I can always find space to workout. Always clean. Tons of equipment. Members are all respectful and mostly return their equipment and don’t leave the gym a mess. For proper workouts I think this is the best gym in Williamsburg and the price is very good for the value.

I absolutely adore this gym! Friendly front desk people, lots of great equipment, serious (but non-intimidating) lifters with cool tattoos, at an affordable price. I switched from Equinox and haven’t looked back.
One piece of feedback: GH could really benefit from another hip thrust machine. There’s always a line for it, regardless of time of day, and as a result, that part of the workout feels quite rushed.
Aside from that, everything is fantastic. I genuinely look forward to coming in each morning.

Glorified planet fitness at 10x the cost. The “sauna” is an unsanitary booth that sits right beside the urinals and faces directly towards people walking into the locker room. The machines/equipment often have 2 or 3 people in line to use them. Yoga classes are freezing cold, overcrowded, and noise from the gym leaks in. There are even some classes that take place right in the middle of the gym, so you have to weave in and out of people on top of all the other chaos.
After several months of not going, I finally decided to cancel my membership. I tried to cancel in June and was told I needed to cancel 30 days in advance to not be charged for June and July. After several attempts at trying to contact management, I was told they were unavailable and to keep calling back. In that time, I was also charged for July. When I was finally able to get in touch, they were unhelpful and unwilling to work with me.
The only bright spot of this place is yoga instructor Marissa, who is great (reason for two stars and not one). Surprised she is still working at a place like that to be honest.

Noticed some people commenting about it being too busy.. guys, every gym I’ve ever gone to in my life gets busy. Just time it like everything else in New York. This is a fantastic gym! The pricing is excellent, staff are friendly, equipment is great and I’ve been there 9 months now. Grindhouse does it right.. honestly I’ve got zero complaints for the value you get. See you in the AM!

Lovely place! Might be a weird thing to call a gym but gyms tend to intimidate me, yet I usually feel pretty at ease here as a fairly casual gym goer.
That being said, and I understand this isn't exactly an easy fix but I would be really appreciative if something can be done: I don't love that water fountains are partially tucked into locker areas. As a rule I try to have as little to do with locker rooms as possible, as I look gender ambiguous and people can be strange about it. While I haven't had a serious problem yet, there have been moments where well meaning bystanders tried to help me to the "correct" locker room. It isn't a dealbreaker for me, but it does make me hold my breath every time I get in line to fill my water bottle.

I have been a member of this gym for a year now, and I honestly wouldn’t go anywhere else. I usually workout in the late mornings or afternoons, and I have never had an issue with it being too crowded. All the staff is friendly and coaches around always ready to help if you have any questions-thank you Dave & Naqam😉- but my favorite part is the boxing classes with coach Brandon. He is a real deal so be ready to sweat and have some work done!

Shady business practices. I signed up for a fixed 6 month membership online and signed my membership agreement then as well which contains all the financial details. When I went in for my first workout they had me sign a “waiver”, which I figured was just the usual liability form and since I wanted to start my workout and was reading it on my phone I just signed it without reading the whole thing. Turns out this “waiver” was much more than that and actually changed the membership terms to now include a $50 “annual fee”. At no point when singing up online do they mention this anywhere nor when you go in person do they mention they are changing the terms and increasing the price. I pointed this out to them and based on the response it does seem fully intentional. It’s a bit silly because if they just listed the price online as the real price ($50 higher) I would have been fine, but the fact that they lie about all the membership prices online to then try to sneak in this hidden fee is wild. In what world does it make sense to charge a hidden “annual fee” on a fixed term membership where you are supposed to be paying the full price up front?

2 stars because I genuinely like this gym when I've come here for classes for the equipment they have- but it can get insanely busy- but this review is for my experience with one coach that really destroyed my view of grind house and really really upset me. I posted this on ClassPass but posting here too. This is for the boxing class with Brandon:
I've never felt uncomfortable or unwelcomed in any class I've ever taken before (which is probably 1000 in the last 4 years) and yet this instructor made me feel bullied and I left within the first 2 minutes- something I've never done before- and spent 20 minutes crying in the locker room from this experience.
The instructor wouldn't stop calling on me and when he asked the whole class whose first time it was and I didn't raise my hand he still then called on me againnn from across the room, making everyone stare at me, saying "oh it's not your first class?" Where I said "no it's not, just work uoj as the coach" and he said "oh really?" And I said "yep, but hey I'm not in a good headspace tonight can you stop" and he went: "Show me your fighting stance then. " I said "I don't want to do that, I don't want to put on the spot in front of everyone" and he laughed hysterically going "well you're going to hate this class then" which made the entire class laugh and made me feel SO singled out.
IF he genuinely wanted to know if it was my first boxing class, he would have asked me alone when he gave each person a fist bump in the beginning of class, he wouldn't have put the only overweight person on the spot in front of everyone or would have come up to me privately after to check in. Or he would have apologized for making the entire class laugh AT me. Also for what it's worth- I took the same class here with another instructor about 2 weeks ago and was SO excited to jump into the workout (and I knew that it was buddying up and whatnot) and planned my entire day around it, and have taken a boxing class once a month at another studio for the past year.
I still don't know why he kept singling me out other than to be mean because I was just silently standing in the corner minding my own business and was just ready to start the class. Honestly, this was the worse experience I've ever had in a gym of any setting and being laughed at has absolutely wrecked my week by making me feel insanely insecure and judged for just existing and wanting to do a workout.

The gym is well-equipped and offers plenty of space but recently it’s been getting more crowded, making it harder to access equipment during peak times. Also, the water filter has been out of service since August, and there’s often a shortage of fresh towels during rush hours.
The AC and ventilation are almost always out of order, leaving the gym consistently hot (never below 70°F), humid, stuffy, and filled with a strong, unpleasant odor.

Great classes, coaches, and the machines. Staff is as friendly as you can expect in NY 😎🙃 but… the gym is badly managed. I already canceled my membership but oh, man, it’s just getting worse and worse. Here are just some issues: 1 - a leaky ceiling in a few places. 2 - it’s so cold in the yoga studio you have to wear a sweater not to freeze to death. 3 - they sooo oversold in January, clases are dangerously overcrowded. I never get to use the sauna anymore and have wait for the machines no matter what time of the day it is. I really enjoyed working out at Grind but it’s time to go 💃

I joined Grindhouse a year ago and began training promptly with Nathan Gibbs, who I want to give a shoutout to here. Nathan’s expertise in kinesthetics was integral in healing a chronic knee injury I had, and has since been instrumental in me building a significant amount of functional muscle over the past year.
Nathan is extremely knowledgeable, dedicated to his client and training, and flexible to what your goals and needs are. On top of all that, he’s a great vibe to train with.
Grindhouse has a great layout, great staff, a wide variety of machines to use, and a positive atmosphere. In my opinion it is the best bang for your buck in the Williamsburg neighbourhood. As someone who usually doesn’t like going to the gym, going to Grindhouse makes it enjoyable and training with Nathan has made it worthwhile.

Terrible experience while cancelling membership.
I told them 25 days before that I want to stop my membership. But apparently according to their "terms and conditions" it has to be cancelled 30 days before. And they proceeded to charge me for an extra month - even though I'm moving and I won't use the gym for that month at all.
25 days is enough of a notice - they just saw a chance to get another 1 month of gym fee out of me and they took it.
You can do better Grind House!

It’s maybe the best gym around. It has all the equipment you could ever ask for. The music played there has greatly improved. The locker room was updated, but still feels cramped. In the end though, if they had a jacuzzi and a multi person sauna, it would be fantastic. The casual gym goer will likely not tolerate the high cost of membership after several months. You would have to go 5 days/week to get your $ worth.

I’ve been a member of GrindHouse for well over a year and it is my favorite gym, by far, that I’ve ever trained at. First and foremost: it is CLEAN. And I mean CLEAN, clean. The wonderful staff are constantly walking around making sure equipment, bathrooms, floors and surfaces are spotless. Huge shoutout to the staff!
Next, it’s HUGE. Even when it’s busy there is always some way to make yourself busy with another piece of equipment or floor space.
The trainers and other members are also impressively fit, but not in that typical meathead way. There are people of all gender identities, all sizes, all working towards being better versions of themselves. Shoutout to the trainers for all being so friendly and approachable.
Just a great gym. Well worth the very affordable price.

This is a great gym - good equipment, lots of space, and clean changing rooms. It can be busy during peak hours but you never have to wait long for a space. Staff at the front desk are friendly and helpful.
The only downside is the instructor of Saturday morning classes plays her music unbelievably loudly and is extremely disruptive to other gym goers. It’s during peak times (9am) and even across the other side of the gym, with noise cancelling headphones on, it’s a problem - if I can hear her in those circumstances, id imagine her class members 2 ft away from her can hear just fine. (And good luck trying to get a treadmill at that time). Its the same with her spin classes too - the music is so loud it shakes the weights outside the room. All other times the gym is well managed and you can get a good workout in peace - not sure why this is accepted as an exception.

I love this gym. The space is great and they have everything for the type of workout you need. The staff is also super sweet and the price is super affordable. All in all, I would highly recommend this gym

It’s such a huge space, and I’ve rarely (if ever)had to wait for a machine, as there’s plenty of each type of machine. The classes are also taught by amazing trainers that really want to help you and motivate you. I also love that at this gym, people are incredibly focused on their own workout and typically keep to themselves. It’s nice as a woman to feel comfortable working out anywhere in the gym and it feeling like a safe and inclusive environment. There’s also a great sauna in the locker rooms. The only thing that would make this gym even better is if they offered a tanning bed (great for winter to help with seasonal depression), if they had a room to do laundry in (obviously at an extra cost), and maybe a sauna area with a hot tub and cold plunge (I understand these are extravagant amenities but I would pay double for these services).

During my trial (which I only attended 2/3 sessions), the staff gave an unwelcoming vibe and their maintenance team is great….but it would’ve been better to not clean right under me while I worked out lol(dangerous). 1 of my Favorite Gyms Ever Since April of 2016 This Has Been The Gym That i Always talk about to my friends and family id Say it was at its Best when it was Willy B Fitness before it changed its Name But Even now as The Grindhouse its Still 1 Center Stage Gym Everybody's Cool there 1 issue only that I don't like is that the price hiked up from me paying $24.50 a month the price hiked up to $85 a Month which the membership price is ridiculous but its convenient for me inside the gym its amazing they just need to do sumptn about that Membership price

Really like this gym. Good location. It’s usually clean except for the floors in the boxing/HIIT studio. Showers. Cons are that they refuse to waive the $8 no-show fee even when you are literally hacking coughing and sick. It’s a ridiculous policy. They also have a tiny spin room and blare music in there like it’s a rage party (with no AC or moving air). Thankfully, if you like your hearing, they have earplugs.

When I left Equinox for Grind House I knew I’d be fine and it would be good enough. I truly wasn’t expecting to cut my gym expense by 1/3 AND upgrade gyms! I encourage you to do the same! Grind House is an awesome facility with tons of cable machines, squat racks, and new cardio equipment ; no more waiting in line or changing my workout schedule to accommodate overcrowded and overpriced Equinox.

In response to a recent post from Gabriela B. regarding “Brandon’s boxing class:”
A bunch of us members have had Brandon as a group fitness instructor (boxing, team training, HIIT, etc.), from approx 2017 to present day (dating as far back as when the facility had been a Retro Fitness).
You are sorely mistaken (and most likely suffer from poor push-up skills and thin skin). Brandom is spunky, comical, and personable. His own personal “push-up game” is also quite excellent (in the case you had any concern over his technique).
But yes, you are correct- if someone is seeking out 45-60 mins of positive affirmations, celebration of their fitness accolades, and trophy/cookie/gold star awarding in a group setting, his is not the class to attend.
He is quite FAR from lazy. On the contrary, Brandon has (on MANY occasions over the years) even stayed with students after a class (on his own time/free of charge), to assist with skills that would benefit from improvement, or even spend more time with folks if they felt they needed to get more work in and for whatever reason had not fatigued to the extent they had desired on that particular day.
He is also exceedingly attentive and concerned should a student express uncertainty or concern about something. In addition, he is refreshingly receptive to student suggestions/feedback.
But… better luck next time!

I went to Grind House for a boxing class with Brandon. The class itself was good, but he is the worst instructor I’ve ever had. He screamed that I was doing the worst push ups that he had ever seen (lol), but then refused to teach me how to do better. He is lazy and prefers to make fun than actually instruct.

It’s unfortunate that businesses and their employees are in the practice of scamming customers. I was thinking of joining the establishment until I heard what they did to a customer. The gym should have policies in place to protect the consumers from predatory employees and predatory owners
Naqam and the gym should return the money that their employee(s) requested to borrow from their clients. A promise was made verbally and via txt by Naqam to repay the borrow funds.
In a series of txt and emails naqam promised to return the funds and was given more than enough time to pay her back and many other people wouldn't had remained as calm as she did I know I wouldn’t have. This place is such a scam and thankfully I dodged the bullet.. This place should be avoided if this is how they treat people, preying on the kindness of their clients. This young lady shouldn't be going through this and all other women Beware!

Easily the best gym in New York. The space is huge, equipment is great condition, clean and updated. The breadth of machines they have is great (though I'd personally love a couple of extra stair climbers) and I can always find what I need for my workouts.
Changing rooms have been renovated so they're nice and clean.
The best thing about this gym though is the people (members and staff). All of the trainers, front of house staff and cleaners are so friendly and kind - I've been to plenty of gyms where it feels elitist/exclusive or intimidating and this couldn't be more different. There's a friendliness to the members - I see the same people regularly and we always wave and smile at each other. The trainers are the best in the biz and the classes are better than a lot of boutique class places (Danielle's classes are not for the faint of heart...).
Highly recommend: the same as an Equinox but half the price tag and more welcoming.

It’s great value for the price: no hassle membership, mostly brand new equipment, good layout and clean facility. BIG plus is that it is one of the only gyms I’ve come across that has a good balance of strength and cardio equipment.
A few changes that I think would help:
- ventilation/hvac improvements
- get rid of some of the TV’s, distracting
- lower music volume, it makes personal earbuds practically unusable
- traditional hack squat machine

The gym is amazing for those whose primary goal is to weight train. The gym has 8 squat racks and dedicated deadlifting platforms and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get my own squat rack before. I can't say the same about any other gym that I've ever been a member at in my life. The diversity of machines is also great, they have everything you could possibly think of. The only drawback for me is that there are members who walk around barefoot (no socks) on dedicated turf areas and have even seen them on leg press machines. That to me is just repulsive and I don't understand why they don't enforce members to at a minimum wear some socks. Aside from that, the gym smells great and is overall really clean. Cheapest in the area @ $99/month and also way larger than anything else that I've visited in Wburg.

I joined Grind House a few months ago (spring of '21) and so far it's money worth spending. The staff always greet the clients in a friendly manner. The gym, so far, is always maintained clean. I attend most of the exercise classes and the group classes are great with great instructors, especially Danielle Hirschman. After taking her group classes many times since spring of '21 and observed her way of teaching and how she maintains her physique, I decided to purchase her physical trainer package, and I LOVE IT because not only is her physique a model of how physically fit I aspire to be, but her energy, patience, friendliness and knowledge motivates me. So far, the Grind House is nothing but good, positive and friendly vibes, and I hope it stays that way :-).

Great gym with great facilities. I've been coming here for 6 months and I've felt this place has always been friendly and supportive. I've gotten to know a lot of the trainers and they are all helpful and have a really diverse range of specialities. I love my trainer Danielle and I have made so much progress with her since being here (just hit a 210 PR on my deadlift!!). As a beginner lifter and a woman I was a little bit apprehensive at first, especially coming from a really horrible first time PT experience at Crunch in GP - but I quickly felt welcomed here and it totally renewed my confidence.

You understand right away upon walking in why this space is one of the best in NYC. It’s truly designed for strength and conditioning, where you can flow seamlessly from one exercise to another. Sure it’s on the lower level, but I rather be on one floor where everything is accessible versus having to visit different levels which can disrupt one’s groove. And most importantly, the vibe is fantastic where everyone there loves to train and you can’t help but work hard as well.

I had high hopes for this gym because there’s so much space and lots of equipment but it’s actually awful. Think Planet Fitness but with squat racks. There’s a weird dichotomy of people who look like they have never worked out before and narcissistic trainers doing photo shoots and filming all. the. time. The cleaning lady vacuumed under my barbell while I was deadlifting, the trainers are always getting in your space, the PT staff will stand right in front of the cable machine mirror while youre using it. The worst part is that I’ve been trying to cancel my membership for the past week and they’re just straight-up ignoring me. AVOID THIS GYM AT ALL COSTS! Unless you want to stay with the skinny-fat hipsters just doing endless bicep curls in the mirror 😂 or get in the background of a trainer doing a photoshoot when really they should be focusing on improving their clients’ form (which they never do).
Absolute Power Fitness on Grand St is far superior- there’s competitive athletes and everyone there understands proper gym etiquette.

Equipment-wise, there is everything you need and more here and it’s so clean! I’ve never met a friendlier gym staff and my membership was affordable and came with a personal training session and classes! For gyms in the area this is by far the best value you will get.
